    people need to realize that the 4.0l 5 speed is the reason whyyyyyy the 4runner is so awesome. RELIABILITY. Meat and potatos, tried and true transmission. It's a Sport UTILITY vehicle. Remember what that's actually supposed to mean....? Thank God Toyota still does with the Runner.

    • @snazari1994
      @snazari1994 7 років тому +9

      Casey Cloeter EXACTLY!! The Tacoma with the 4.0 and 5 speed was crazy reliable and now the 3.5 and 6 speed are having problems. 4runners are used for outdoor enthusiasts and overlanders and for that reason it needs to be kept simple for reliability

    • @volleyserpent122
      @volleyserpent122 7 років тому +2

      Casey Cloeter I hope Toyota doesn't give the 4Runner the Tacoma's 3.5 engine. As I heard it's sluggish that's why people have asked for tunes to make it less sluggish. If anything update the 4.0 give it more HP and TQ and a 6 speed auto if that's possible? They'll probably give it a 3.5 V6 with a 6 speed with more HP and TQ than it already has. Just a thought.

    • @trailrunnah8886
      @trailrunnah8886 6 років тому +2

      I really wanted a new Taco until I started reading all the complaints about the 3.5. I drove one, and had to check to make sure I wasn't driving with the parking brake on. VERY sluggish. I now want a 4R, because of the drivetrain.

      everyone goes through this realization after research. first they buy into 'subaru's can go anywhere'. you poke around and realize...oh wait...no they actually cant. then u try to learn about mechanics of off road. eventually all things point to the 4runner.

    • @NaijaBoiTellEm
      @NaijaBoiTellEm 6 років тому +2

      Skillow The 4Runner probably won't change (aka go into the 6th Generation) till 2020. The TRD is pretty pricey. I think the TRD Off-Road (previously known as the Trail) is the sweet spot for the 4Runner lineup. Can't really go wrong with any trim though.

    • @NaijaBoiTellEm
      @NaijaBoiTellEm 3 роки тому

      @Mctrician2 Looks are subjective and while the hood scoop is non-functional, I like the way it looks. And like the look of the Trail/Off-Road better than the SR5. The SR5 wheels do nothing for me while I've always been a fan of the modern FJ wheels. If you're into JUST modding, then yes, the SR5 is the way to go. KDSS is optionable but I wish I would have went for it given the amount of driving I do on-road (pre-Coronavirus that is). The difference between a 4x4 SR5 and 4x4 Trail was not big enough for me avoid moving up a trim especially since I didn't care for the Premium package and the Trail that I go was a leftover (I bought mine brand new in June 2017). The Trail/Off-Road is the 4Runner but it isn't for everyone.

    • @NaijaBoiTellEm
      @NaijaBoiTellEm 3 роки тому

      @Mctrician2 Ah. I see I see. Yea, I live outside of Philadelphia, so having 4x2 wouldn't make sense. They do sell like hot cakes down in the southern states of America. Yea, based on those options, I'd probably save up to get the TRD Off-Road but definitely can see why people wouldn't want it up in Canada.

    The difference between the LR4 and the 4Runner: When you got high centered, the LR4 would recognize this and automatically raise the suspension to super extended mode giving you 13.5" of ground clearance under the skid plate.

  • @AW-xv7dq

    What I don't like about the 4 Runner is the long wheel base. The FJ's dimensions is more offroad buggy like and is so much more nimble in the tight trails. Aside from that the Offroad Features CRAWL CONTROL of the TRD Pro is superior to the FJ. Did they not offer that crawl system in one year of the FJ tho?

    If you get the Limited version with full time AWD, does it have those same mogul and crawl control features? Can you just swap out the wheels and tires to do just as well with it?

    • @Gazziza29
      @Gazziza29 7 років тому +5

      No. The Limited does not have crawl control nor terrain select. It also doesn't have a rear locker. It does however have a center locker and A-trac. If you swap out the tires the Limited is still a beast and able to handle 95% of the trails most people would want to go on. Also full time AWD should not be confused with what the Limited has which is full time 4WD. They are different systems.

    So many computer controlled features that it seems to take the challenge and fun out of off-roading. The more advanced the 4X4's get the more aftermarket add-ons come to market (think rooftop tents) that will never be used by the posers who buy these rigs.

    • @itr0863

      um, you do have a choice to NOT use those computer controlled features.

    • @blackdiamond5015
      @blackdiamond5015 6 років тому +1

      J Smith couldn't agree with you more. I have the Trail Premium and came to quickly understand that the crawl and terrain controls are nothing but a gimic and truly aren't needed. I've used them two or three times, kicked myself for buying the model which had them and have never used them again. The downhill control is easily accomplished by 4 wheel low instead of relieing on the loud and annoying system to control the speed.

    • @blackdiamond5015
      @blackdiamond5015 6 років тому

      j burggg actually yes you do. You don't have to engage the systems and in some cases can even turn off certain systems. I find the crawl and terrain controls annoying and truly overrated so I stopped using them all together and have been much happier without them. Nothing but a complete and total gimic.

    • @trackntrail2869

    • @xX_Skraith_Xx
      @xX_Skraith_Xx 6 років тому +5

      It's there if you need it. That's like saying "I don't need a spotter when I bench because I know what I'm doing." I've had multiple instances where I've been like "Eh I'm pretty sure I'll get stuck if I try to go there," went, got stuck just using 4L, and crawl control got me out like I was on pavement. It allows drivers (especially those new to offroading) to try things they otherwise would be hesitant to risk.

      When the manufacturer is sitting next to you in a test vehicle, you ALWAYS ask before going off the prescribed trail. Its the mfg rep's responsibility to bring the vehicles back with no damage. And if damage occurs, the driver needs to be in the clear. It's not a matter of ability, but a matter of proper behavior. Not everyone can afford to replace broken vehicles like Top Gear.

It's easy to think this car is rugged and reliable when there is nothing in this class of car to compare it with. If there was you would realize how pathetic it really is. I have this car and have had nothing but problems with it. If you want something capable buy a 2nd or 3rd generation version as they are awesome. The 5th generation is a complete waste of money, poor quality, incapable without costly modifications and unreliable.
