Those of us who were teenager's in the early 90's and came of age in the mid to late 90's are a damn lucky bunch of people. Everything was absolutely perfect about the 90's. It's truly indescribable. You would just have had to lived it like we did to understand how special of a time it was. Long live the Greatest decade in history !!!!
It may have been great for teenagers but the 90s were not the greatest decade by far. To be sure, there were some positive trends like low inflation due to very cheap oil which resulted in a small increase in real incomes (though still lower than they were in the late 70s) and strong job growth mainly due to the dotcom bubble. But hundreds of thousands of jobs were lost because of NAFTA and the WTO and personal bankruptcies soared to more than a million in 1996 despite strong economic growth. Also, the number of uninsured Americans increased to more than 40 million. IMO, it was not the best of times.
"This is such a dumb song," I said, when I heard this on the radio in the 90s. Welp, it's lived in my head rent-free for 30 years and today I finally came back to hear it again. Well played, BoDeans. You won the long game.
Party of Five was the number one show me and my folks always looked forward to watching in the evenings. This video brought back some good memories. Miss the series and the 90's altogether.
I grew up in the 90s and 2000s when the original Beverly Hills 90210, Party of Five, WWF attitude era, the WB channel still existed before becoming the CW, etc.
If you havnt already seen your self come back in time then you havnt actually suceeded in making the time machine in the future yet.... Provided that your motivation was to return to your past.... Or your time machine has/had/hashad the ability to make/travel to alternate time lines or deminsions....
The amazing thing about Party of Five is that it had consistently low rating throughout its six-year run. It never even broke in the top 50 (the highest it ever achieved was 56 in the Nielsens). TV Guide once called it, "The best show on television that you're not watching". Yet it launched the careers of Matthew Fox, Scott Wolf, Neve Campbell, Jennifer Love Hewitt and Lacy Chabert. Like the (original) Odd Couple, the series found an audience in syndication. So I guess there is life after cancellation after all!
Captain’s log: June 15, 2024. Waiting for my order at a new “hot chicken” place, this song came over the speakers. I hadn’t heard it in at least 20 years. All of a sudden my mind was transported back in time to the mid 90’s, and all the memories of my college days came rushing back. Happy thoughts of all the fun times. Then sadness when I realized how long it had been, and yet how quickly time has passed. I almost started welling up right then and there. When we are young, we never think about how we will miss our youth. I wasn’t even a real fan of this song. However, it unintentionally became a timestamp to my 90’s memories. I would love to go back for real, if I could. 😭❤
Nostalgia does that. In 20 years, this time right now will seem so perfect. The 1990s seem perfect to me as well at first glance; however, if I think real hard, I can just remember the anxieties I felt in my teenage years. It is so easy to forget the stress, not the freedom, of not knowing my future and what I would do with it. I forget the stress of figuring out who I was, of needing to stand out, of typical teenage lack of confidence, and of hard study in a competitive school environment (many all-nighters). College is similarly fantastic until I remember how excited I was to graduate and move on. The 1990s weren't a happy song any more than 2024 is. Memory just tricks us into thinking there was some more magical time in life. In reality, every moment we are breathing and healthy and able to have happy thoughts of other happy times is magic.
this is the type of song that makes me wanna go out in the woods with a bunch of people, drink, party, and enjoy life. just a different feeling that i have.
***** Oh, and please don't slander phillyfan 90. Happiness is not gay. Or maybe it is if you meant the original meaning of the word. Let's go with that! Phillyfan 90 - you're happy! I like it...
This song is perfect right now. Housing market blows, interest rates suck, stagnant wages, people struggling with payments, mental health, dating market is shit, people constantly stressed……we all need to be closer to free.
This song reminds of my late husband he just passed away on August 27,2022 we are both from Wisconsin and saw these guys at the Wisconsin when we were dating we were married 30 yrs in March.....
you know that old school good song you've been looking for for years but you can't remember the name, lyrics, or Melody but you know it exist this is one of them for me
This song came out when I was in elementry school now I'm 34 years old .damn miss those days. Party of five finished a month before I finished the 8th grade . Damn.
People always forget about "the other" big rock scene outside of grunge in the early-mid 90s - The BoDeans, The Rembrandt's, Hootie, Spin Doctors, Sheryl Crow etc. etc
I remember hearing this song for the first time i watched the classic TV drama"Party Of Five" it played as the opening theme song.Ah the 90s man how i so miss those days 😀
was bingeing/getting through season 1 of Party of Five for the first time over the past week and finished the season finale so now I have this song stuck in my head
The 1990's brought some awesome music that would always stand out in popular culture and always be recognised as theme tunes. The two that stand out the most would have to be Closer to Free by the BoDeans and I'll Be There by the Rembrandts
castlemania08 Oh yes I agree. I love hearing songs like this make me tear up and think back to the 90s. I don't see todays so called sitcoms putting today mainstream music for theme songs. Then again most shows today don't even have a decent theme song.
Anime is where its at for theme songs.. Check out the theme for RWBY its american so youll be able to u derstand the words. Great prog metal from a cat that grad. From berkley.

Kids Choice Awards 1996 hosted by Whitney Houston Musical guests Whitney Houston "I'm Every Woman" All-4-One "These Arms" Monica "Before You Walk Out of My Life" BoDeans "Closer to Free"
I have listened to this song 2.400 times if not more (i did the math). It's the bell at our school. When this song is over, everyone has to be ready at their desk.
Heard this playing at the grocery store today. Oh 90's 👍👍 Also it's really strange hearing 90's songs with modern quality. I don't even recognize them sometimes, the songs sound so different because they sound so clean and crisp, it sounds more natural and instruments are separated so well and very distinct. Not that same flat over the air radio sound from the 90's.
I remember this show! And,this theme song! Hard to believe it aired in FOX 20 years ago! I remember the cast:Matthew Fox(from LOST),Neve Campbell ,Scott Wolf,Lacey Chabert, and a very young Jennifer Love Hewitt!
Party of Five and the Bodeans! This takes me back to being 12, 13, 14...(was I really as young as Claudia in those days?). PO5 was about growing up, and the strength and love one can only find in their family. I love Breaking Bad and Sons of Anarchy as much as the next guy, but what happened to shows like this? What happened to the shows that made you want to BE the characters, or at least just "hang out" with them for awhile each week, regardless of the machinations of the plot?
Yes I'm So Excited Everyone Party Of Five Is On NetFlix Now Go Watch You'll Relive All those wonderful memories.... I feel like A young teen again.... 💖🌹🎶🎧💃🍦📷🎁🎉🎊💯
I thank the movie “Heavyweights” for getting me to this song, brings me back to a time when music just made you feel good

Absolutely it was the best time ever
I was just a little kid but man it really was a great time - wish I’d gotten to experience it as a teenager or adult.
I grew up in the 90's and I don't know what parallel universe you came from but it was far from perfect.
Well said.

I have that same reaction when I hear any disco song from the 70's. Memories.
My CHILDHOOD MEMORIES BACK IN THE 90'S I WAS 4 YEARS I WAS TRUNING AGE 5 I. 1995
My DISNEY MOIVE IN HEAVYWEIGHTS 1995 FEBRUARY
I think the theme song to stupid show Friends is lame!
Hahaha I was just singing this in the shower for some reason and was like "what is that?" No idea why it popped in my head.
90's was a great time to be a teen
Or a 40 yr old..living a dream ?.
But 80’s were the best !
Agreed!
Heard this song on season 5 ep 1 of riverdale
This song is truly a classic and amazing song 💯💯👑it always will be 💯👑

boy i can't wait do it

St. Thelonious the Monk still a classic
And now, what was considered low ratings back then…would probably be considered great now
Yep. It almost got cancelled after the first season. Fans of the show wrote to Fox begging them to keep it going.
I'm glad they did.
I enjoyed the show when it was on originally and coincidently was a BoDeans fan too.
Wow I never knew that I’ve just started watching it and find it very underrated definitely one of my favourite 90s shows

Been a long time since I heard this song! Forgot how great and catchy it is!
One must have grown up going to Summerfest every year to understand this song... One of the only songs worth a damn to have been written in Wisconsin
You mean better than "Blister In The Sun" by the Violent Femmes?
I saw them there in 2001
