I heard the Navy leaders that allowed this to be filmed got in huge trouble. In hindsight, it was probably worth some careers, an important piece of pop culture and US History and a great showcase of the historic ship.
My buddy was on there when they filmed this. He said she rehearsed in a different outfit and when she came out with the one in the video the navy higher ups lost their minds and said we're never doing this again. Lol.
It's the best music video ever made! However, I can understand why the US Navy hierarchy were a little bit cross, considering about a year after the song was released Iraq invaded Kuwait, kicking off the first Gulf War - I'm assuming this battleship headed out to the Gulf at that time. Regardless though, it's still a fantastic performance by the most fabulous female rock singer - she's amazing! 🫶🏻
You heard wrong. The DoD was 100% on-board with this collaboration. They knew it would be a recruiter's wet dream. The public outcry over her indecent clothing was a known potential concern, but the DoD decision makers just made some PR statements to pacify those voices. The Cold War was winding down and the DoD knew they had to get those recruitment numbers up to prepare for Gulf War 1. Same as with Top Gun. Same with sooooo many movies since then -- basically every movie, TV show or music video which features military vehicles, aircraft, etc are all done in collaboration with the DoD. The DoD gets free advertisement, editorial control over the movie and the movie producers get massive free props to use in their film. Win-win for them. Obviously the only losers are us the tax payers, the audience / consumers of the propaganda, and the innocent men, women, and children overseas who get bombed with our tax dollars. The DoD and Hollywood are absolute partners in the mass propaganda game. This is well documented. ❤

My nan just passed away last month, september 14. This was her FAVOURITE song. Actually, yes, it was very scandalous when that video came out. I remember it well. Cher snuck that outfit in at the last minute. She was known for her risqué, almost nude outfits and she was one of a kind. She carried it well and basically thumbed her nose at everyone. The 80s were far far more conservative than nowadays. I can't believe some of the outfits celebrities wear and outright porn in MVs these days.

When I visited the Missouri at Pearl two years ago, I stood in all those spots where Cher recorded the video, and it was awesome. One of the great things about the video was the honest to God deep down happiness and good time that all the officers and men of the Missouri were having - That is America at its best - Smiles, Rock and Roll, drop dead gorgeous women, and the most beautiful warship ever built.

I heard the Navy leaders that allowed this to be filmed got in huge trouble. In hindsight, it was probably worth some careers, an important piece of pop culture and US History and a great showcase of the historic ship.
The Wikipedia article says the Secretary of the Navy thought about firing the CO of the Missouri but decided against it
My buddy was on there when they filmed this. He said she rehearsed in a different outfit and when she came out with the one in the video the navy higher ups lost their minds and said we're never doing this again. Lol.
It's the best music video ever made! However, I can understand why the US Navy hierarchy were a little bit cross, considering about a year after the song was released Iraq invaded Kuwait, kicking off the first Gulf War - I'm assuming this battleship headed out to the Gulf at that time. Regardless though, it's still a fantastic performance by the most fabulous female rock singer - she's amazing! 🫶🏻

You heard wrong. The DoD was 100% on-board with this collaboration. They knew it would be a recruiter's wet dream. The public outcry over her indecent clothing was a known potential concern, but the DoD decision makers just made some PR statements to pacify those voices. The Cold War was winding down and the DoD knew they had to get those recruitment numbers up to prepare for Gulf War 1. Same as with Top Gun. Same with sooooo many movies since then -- basically every movie, TV show or music video which features military vehicles, aircraft, etc are all done in collaboration with the DoD. The DoD gets free advertisement, editorial control over the movie and the movie producers get massive free props to use in their film. Win-win for them. Obviously the only losers are us the tax payers, the audience / consumers of the propaganda, and the innocent men, women, and children overseas who get bombed with our tax dollars. The DoD and Hollywood are absolute partners in the mass propaganda game. This is well documented. ❤

My brother in law retired after 35 years as a Army Ranger as a Colonel, my nephew is a Sargent in the National Guard as a Helicopter Mechanic, and my cousin retired as a Air Force Master Sergeant, and another by marriage who lost both of his legs in Vietnam.

My nan just passed away last month, september 14. This was her FAVOURITE song. We used to scream it in her car when driving to town with my poppy and he used to get mad at us because we would be too loud, especially at the ''OHHHHHHHH'' part, but we never cared. I know this is a breakup type of song; however, I always think of my children when I listen to it. Actually, yes, it was very scandalous when that video came out. I remember it well. Cher snuck that outfit in at the last minute. She was known for her risqué, almost nude outfits and she was one of a kind. She carried it well and basically thumbed her nose at everyone. The 80s were far far more conservative than nowadays. I can't believe some of the outfits celebrities wear and outright porn in MVs these days.

When I visited the Missouri at Pearl two years ago, I stood in all those spots where Cher recorded the video, and it was awesome. One of the great things about the video was the honest to God deep down happiness and good time that all the officers and men of the Missouri were having - That is America at its best - Smiles, Rock and Roll, drop dead gorgeous women, and the most beautiful warship ever built.
