Once upon a time, I recorded this song on a blank cassette tape and mailed it to my love, with no name. He guessed it was me and said that he hoped it was. For 30 years now he is and always will be my sweetest love, my best friend, my husband and soulmate and of course my lover.
I remember listening to the radio and anticipating this song to come on so I could "tape it." I loved the weird sound of it-- it was like hip hop meets rock and Enya rolled into one-- moody and sexy and unbridled. So glad I just saw her sing it in person at the NYS Fair. She's 59 in 2024 but still a musical force to be reckoned with-- with several other songs that match the greatness of this one!

That opening (and repeating) groove still gives me goosebumps to this day - especially when the drums kick in. Such a simple but beautiful song. Nothing brings back that teenage, angst-filled, fantasy-driven yearning for someone you could never hope to have like this tune, lol. 31 years later and it is still as poignant as ever.
@dudeskirt4005 Wonderfully put! I just met a guy this week overseeing a roof being put on my elderly folks' home, all is going wrong in my world right now with my elderly folks whom I dearly love and both of them were in the hospital, my Mom still there fighting. Tonight this kind man, super busy running a large crew came by my folks' house to meet me there because the work crew had left something behind in the backyard. Last week I had to call the ambulance for my Dad while they were roofing & this guy was so kind, compassionate, understanding & actually cared. Tonight I think we could have talked for hours if the evening wasn't already spoken for by our respective commitments but an hour later, & a genuine feeling hug...after I drove home & walked into my condo I heard this song's lyric, damn wish I was your lover"...who knows, stranger things happen to people! ;) I had to play it & stamp the moment with song
The drums are a sample of 'When The Levee Breaks' by Led Zeppelin; John Bonham's groove is legendary. There's a few 90's tracks that sampled the exact same drum break; 'Return To Innocence' by Enigma immediately springs to mind.

90's kid getting an influx of uncontrollable nostalgia!! This song was the soundtrack of my younger years in the mid 90's. This song is a masterpiece and it's production was light years ahead of it's time.
Isn't it odd how, at the time mostly much older people working in video and music production compared to now had some very good ideas about how to sell some songs or produce them compared to how it's a lot more profit and quantity driven these days with a huge amount of much younger people doing the same things?
Memories from NY, subways and cold winter mornings of 1991... gosh each and everytime i listen to this track, it takes me back to that spot...instantly. Everytime i play this tune, it is usually 3/4 times in a row...31 yrs later it gives me the same chill. I suppose a bunch of us have a sweet memory attached to this....and so do I... just dedicated this track to the love to my life once again. If this song were to come out now, it'd reach several hundred millions! Today's music does NOT give this impression to me anymore... Anyone of u feel the same? 1 of those songs that makes u think "wait i was supposed to write this lyrics...." ❣💗💖💝 Sophie: if u happen to be reading this, thank u SO MUCH for this BEAUTIFUL BALLAD.
The exact year I moved to the United States of America..I used to ride the number 1 and number 9 train to get to work in Conway stores and remember listening to this song.. Beautiful memories God bless America
Like so many things, I didn't much appreciate this band on their arrival, this song included. Some 30 plus years later, spending a decade chasing the frisson dragon, this song hits an amazing sweet spot. Sophie B does this so damn well, with a talented ensemble. Proving yet again, the 90s was the best possible decade for music!
yes the last bit is missing: Damn, I wish I was your lover I wanna open up, I'm gonna come inside I wanna fill you up, I wanna make you cry Damn, I wish I was your lover I'm gettin' on my camel, and I'll ride it uptown, oo Damn, I wish I was your lover Hanging around this jungle, wishing that this love would change
Really love the arrangements to this song. What makes it great is not what is being played, but what’s not being played. The space in the arrangements. Love the way the song “takes off” into the musical stratosphere, before landing beautifully with the keyboards a minute later. Have loved this song for 30 years and will continue to.
One of the most sensual songs ever imo. I love the sustained 12 second note at 2:50, followed by the returning keyboard chords. A stunning wee section of the song, powerful, evocative, sensual and sultry. Love it.
You can say that again. Take me back with you life is way too complicated now and people are absolutely out of their minds. God bless you hang in there peace out 🙏🙏🎵🎶😊🦋👍
This song gets a lot of crap thrown at it, but it's really one of the best songs ever written about longing for someone so much and knowing you can't have them. It still sounds fresh and fantastic after all these years. A classic! Very well done Sophie!
I live in the Montrose neighborhood of Houston, and worked at a book shop across from Mary's bar, back in the day. I wish you all could have been there for the annual "Easter Bonnet Parade", the Drag Races (short 1k & 2k races where all participants ran in heels and full drag), the rooftop Sumo wrestling matches, and Sophie B. Hawkins singing this from the rooftop of Mary's bar with her full band backing her up as thousands of us, gay, straight, and whatever, danced and sang. It was glorious fun! ❤
Haha, I was one those weird straight high school kids in the 80’s who absolutely loved hanging out in Montrose. I had a teacher who would wear black leather chaps, speedos and vests at the bars. It was supposed to be a secret. 😂
I lived in Houston from 1973 til 1999, I know where your talking about, a guy I use to work with did the mural on the side of Mary's, I watched him paint some of it, it's now gone, along with the strip where Blockbuster use to be, it's sad when places you where at in your youth are completely demolished, there's a few around the inner loop, I use to live in the old apartments on Steel St in Houston, demolished as well.
I used to play and sing this amazing song to the lady of my dreams constantly....even though I'd never met her. Ten years later I finally met her and 20 tears after that she's my stunning, incredible wife.
The 80's, my friends, was when it all began. The music, the movies - it was the era that will never come by again, yet will forever be symbolic of the ideal period. It was the 80's that founded and gave birth to the beautiful 90's - a decade of gold. Never go be repeated, never to come again, only to live in name and be immortalised in thought. We - have lived though - the best era, history has to offer.
Amen my brotha. So glad I was born when I was. Got to live out my teens in the 80s and party hard through my 20s in the 90's. I almost feel bad for kids these days,....nah. What a time it was,the best 2 decades of my life. All I can do is smile at those great memories, wishing I could do it all again and not change a dam thing. Well maybe 1 or 2 things. Peace.
Oh this just made me want to be young again, I was about her age and oh so full of fun and life, loved to dance dance and dance some more. Youth is so fleeting! 64 now and still love my music! I play it so loud in my jeep people stare cause my car is vibrating and I am rocking out, I will rock to my grave!
A classic. This song never gets old. It has it all: great lyrics, wonderful music (I love all those ups and downs) and a strong and honest singer. An ever-present in my playlists as many other 90's songs.
The true emotion behind that voice, the lyrics, and the electric guitar that fades in on 3:03 was genius..reinforces the fact that this wasn't just your usual pop song.
My mom used to blast this shit and I sang along with her, my single digit aged mind couldn’t comprehend the line “I give you something sweet each time you come inside my jungle book” as anything but a fantastical journey akin to The Pagemaster
The thought of the 90s bring tears to my eyes as I watch from a window at the generation that was created in the 90s from , most likely from 70s babies. Then I saw the 2000+ kids. So now I have no windows.

New horizons triggered my cummybot and I was fast friends with everyone. The free cake frosting was everything everyone wanted and more. Even the bus driver wanted in. She begged me for more. I went around the side to the spare parts drawer. I came back wearing frosting all over her face and chest. Thanks Auntie Mic!

We were so blessed to have grown up with such great musicians. Shout out who is listenening in July 2022!!!!
I’m almost 75 and this is still one of the sexiest songs and videos and I love to listen to it anytime ❤

Very true🙂

Right?
We were a lot younger when it came out though

Still OBSESSED.....48 yrs old ! This song never cools down! 😈
Word Baby....
Me too!
30 years later and still digging this song with the heart of an 18 year old in this mid 40's bod.
Same here! 44 year old bod; 16 in my head. Edit: I'm also a blue eyed lady!
42 here I was trying to talk to/date a girl a few weeks ago she looked about 30 to me....found out yesterday she's 23 I'm still trying to date her...I've been listening to 80s music alot since seeing her for the first time a few months ago
You’re still so young!
YES!!!
😂 heading for 57 and know what you mean. 😉
This song was so iconic from the mid 90’s. She’s awesome.
Early 90s
Everything is iconic to a millennial
Yes.
Yes. Her other songs are classics too.
This was released in 1992.
The '90s were awesome and so is this song! Sophie was such an underrated singer.
Damn, This chick rocked the 90’s properly. Her sounds were magic 😊😊

I have an old friend that came from hisghschool interchange program, he was on hawaii and bring this gem from it, also Paula Abdul songs! great days.
80's & 90's music just beats the shit out of anything in the 2000's
There are some hidden gems today if you look hard enough, sadly all the shit gets the radio airplay
Just played it for my teen kids they loved it!!
... just like the '70s beats out your preferred era(s).
Wow, this song takes me back , 90s were a special decade to grow up❤
Memories from NY, subways and cold winter mornings of 1991... gosh each and everytime i listen to this track, it takes me back to that spot...instantly.
1 of those songs that makes u think "wait i was supposed to write this lyrics...." ❣💗💖💝
Sophie: if u happen to be reading this, thank u SO MUCH for this BEAUTIFUL BALLAD.

The exact year I moved to the United States of America..I used to ride the number 1 and number 9 train to get to work in Conway stores and remember listening to this song.. Beautiful memories God bless America
Still on my 'be happy' playlist. Never fails to bring a smile to my face.
Timeless.
1992, I could live in this year eternally. Fashion, music, pop culture.
Clinton Fischer I wish I could have the 90s back. It was genuinely pure
'92 was the best!
early 90s especially
Good times
Like so many things, I didn't much appreciate this band on their arrival, this song included. Some 30 plus years later, spending a decade chasing the frisson dragon, this song hits an amazing sweet spot. Sophie B does this so damn well, with a talented ensemble. Proving yet again, the 90s was the best possible decade for music!
This song still rock's after thirty years.
What do you mean by thirty? It seems as I just returned from school, turned on MTV and saw it for the first time. Damn, time is a bitch.
Yes
l looked up the drummer. Omar Hakin...he's pretty good.
I know how you feel still can't get the divynals out of my head looking at her aahh
Gawdayum I forgot how good she really is on this song!
I revisit this song every now and then because when I do it feels like I’m entering a portal straight back to the 90s.
Yes,indeed !❤️
Isn’t insane how quick time goes by? Yesterday you were young and today you woke up in your 40s/50s and tmrw we will all be in our 80s
Yes straight back to the 90's. I first heard it while travelling in Florida. A great summer song.
Yep that's what I'm doing tonight ❤

Sorry to hear that. Glad you had that time with her.
Remembering this being played on MTV Europe all the time.
Damn! wish this song was longer! the 90s was sooo good!
It is longer, actually. The album version is a full minute longer.
Agree
yes the last bit is missing: Damn, I wish I was your lover
I wanna open up, I'm gonna come inside
I wanna fill you up, I wanna make you cry
Damn, I wish I was your lover
I'm gettin' on my camel, and I'll ride it uptown, oo
Damn, I wish I was your lover
Hanging around this jungle, wishing that this love would change
that part sounds black.. dudeish tho 🤔
PJ Angels You could say that again. The 80s and 90s music is great!
What a song to sing to someone!
What wouldn't you do for such a person?
My awesome taste in music brought me here .
Really love the arrangements to this song. What makes it great is not what is being played, but what’s not being played. The space in the arrangements. Love the way the song “takes off” into the musical stratosphere, before landing beautifully with the keyboards a minute later. Have loved this song for 30 years and will continue to.
Agreed; this song is a masterpiece (so many great aspects).
One of the most genuine beautiful songs ive ever heard
I remember being a teenage absolutely hypnotized by the beat, chords and bassline of that song
Yo tambien adolescente de 14 años. Quien lo diría hoy 30 años después me gusta como aquel primer día!❤️

One of the most sensual songs ever imo. I love the sustained 12 second note at 2:50, followed by the returning keyboard chords. A stunning wee section of the song, powerful, evocative, sensual and sultry. Love it.

This song gets a lot of crap thrown at it, but it's really one of the best songs ever written about longing for someone so much and knowing you can't have them. It still sounds fresh and fantastic after all these years. A classic! Very well done Sophie!
Eric Clapton, Layla.
@@Parseenfroo Definitely one of if not the best. Clapton captures the masculine horny longing aching torture for a woman who is not his perfectly.
@@daveyrogers7336 Great description of the song Miss Kitty.
its true, its the longing you hear in the song--everyone's suffered thru this.
Even more than that, it's about wanting to show a woman who's in an abusive relationship what real love is. It's beautiful tragedy.
1981
Haha, I was one those weird straight high school kids in the 80’s who absolutely loved hanging out in Montrose. I had a teacher who would wear black leather chaps, speedos and vests at the bars. It was supposed to be a secret. 😂
I frequented the Montrose area in the 90s as well. This song was definitely a lesbian anthem.
I was 8 years old and lived on W Gray. I didnt notice these things back then.
All these years later and this is still one of the sexiest damn songs ever!
Rihanna should re make this song
Gotta agree! Classic

90's were the best..at least we have UA-cam to help bring us to the past and bring us 90's people together. I love u all. I need another drink.
One of the best songs from the 90's
I used to play and sing this amazing song to the lady of my dreams constantly....even though I'd never met her. Ten years later I finally met her and 20 tears after that she's my stunning, incredible wife.
LOVE
I love that!
Stop crying for goodness sake...you married her.
Wow, awesome little story!!
That's so sweet 😊❤️
Wonderful song, gives you goosebumps and makes you wonder what happened to music as a whole.
Yes, gold the 90's when I made my daughter.
No era will ever come by again, no matter how good or how shitty it was. And the 80s sucked anyway.
Peace.
Cool song from the 90's! In the Summer of 1995, I watched MTV while listening to Sophie B. Hawkins. Awesome! 😊

This song brings me back to the 90s. This masterpiece is timeless!!!
The instrumental layers in this track are marvellous ! ❤
The true emotion behind that voice, the lyrics, and the electric guitar that fades in on 3:03 was genius..reinforces the fact that this wasn't just your usual pop song.
The drummer ! He knew when to do it.
2022. This song still gives me chills.
Big time. I find it really emotive.

This song is one of the best of the 90s and the fact that 5,300 people can't understand that is quite baffling!
Who else rocked out to this song as a 13 year old when it was released and didn't fully comprehend the sensuality of the lyrics until adulthood?
Born in 80 so yes. This was my jam in 90 playing Mario 3
I did😀
Me!!!
