The older I get, the harder it is to reconnect with that feeling of blissful happiness that came with being a kid.
But a song can open that door for just a second and fill my heart with a gust of happiness I thought long gone. Even if it’s only for a moment, sometimes a moment is all you need.

Vincent Vega That’s what I love about songs like this. Growing up I was listening to them, and while I sang along I didn’t know the impact of the words. Listening now, I feel it and also just remember those great times as a kid, carefree.

CG I know right?!?! I can remember the video playing in the background and my memory is what I was doing at the time. It’s like seeing through the eyes of 7 year old me. Probably the closest thing to time travel we’ll ever get.

There's certain 90's songs that give me emotional trauma. Like that mc hammer song(please please-no need to remind me of the name of that song...) And vanilla ice song that we all pretended wasn't some kind of remake of Bowie. However Gin Blossoms were in a league of their own. I considered them musicians. I still do

My mom died about a year ago. This was her favorite song. We would hear it on the radio from time to time all through me growing up. Today was the first time I heard it since she passed. I was in the middle of the store and had to hide in the diaper aisle while I cried. But I when I heard "cause all I really wants to be with you" I felt like she was making me hear that line, so i knew she was with me. I miss her and this song is solidified as super special to me and will be for the rest of my life. I love and miss you mom.

It's really sad when you realize how many songs on this album make obvious references to drinking and being drunk, and that the band fired him for drinking too much, then he offed himself watching the band sing the lyrics he wrote and getting famous. 75 as well!! So nice to connect with people who were 18 when this came out. Stepping into adulthood, but still incredibly young, naive, hopeful but lost and scared. This song like so many other songs of that time was so upbeat that you think it’s about something happy. But in this case it’s about heartbreak and trying to move on from a big loss or f**king up a big piece of your life (which I did around this time).

I think about this song more than I should. It’s not a cry for help, it’s a scream. He’s already lost. And he’s living after the credits stopped rolling. “ if I hadn’t blown the whole thing years ago, I’d still be her with you...” no one ever shows what happens to the guys that lose the girl. Lose the war. Lose themselves after the movie ends and the lights go up. This is the last cry, not for help, but for one last good bye before he goes his way forever. Sad. Beautiful. Real.

+nativesun It was originally "You can trust me not to drink" because Hopkins had a very visible alcohol problem all through the band's timeline. The use of "trust me not to drink" would have been grossly ironic because it's obviously something Hopkins would pay lip service to, but not adhere.
It further didn't make any sense to use "drink" over "think" as the song itself starts off very early with "and I'm in no shape for drivin'" suggesting to say "you can trust me not to drink" is nothing more than, well, drunk talk.

I personally prefer now to then. I love having access to all the books, education, music, shopping, talking/connecting to similar minded folks all over the world with ease, and movies to stream at your fingertips. Tech is just a tool that can be good or bad depending like food. Good food can feed your body and make it strong, and junk food can damage the body.
Lol, I also don't miss being stuck just listening to the local radio that repeated the same top ten songs over and over and over again! If you wanted variety you had to have the funds to buy CDs...and there might not even be more than one song you even end up liking lol! I grew up a bit poor, so I prefer having more money now as an adult too. I feel like the societal pressure to conform to a very narrow standard of being was way more intense too back then compared to now which was another negative.
The only things I miss from back then was having a young and healthy body before I was injured and became partially disabled, and the cost of living being much less!

We had the internet back in the 90s. It was dial-up, and you had to scream anytime someone picked up the phone and cut off your AOL connection after it just took 3 hours to load one web page, but still! We also had cell phones. They were the Zach Morris, brick-sized ones that had the huge antenna sticking out of the top and you had to have an entire duffel bag to carry it around, so beepers were much more convenient. We had all those things in the 90s, but people didn't carry them around attached to their hands 24/7 like today. People could actually focus and pay attention without having ADHD brain from the constant dopamine hits from the instant gratification that comes with never having to wait for anything.

Its a disconnect from the world. We lost our bond. They no longer have a spark and faith in people. Mom and I pray for them to find the happiness but it's tough. My brother is having twins next year so I'm praying that will bring life back into him. The other one has since drowned himself into work. Has 3 kids numbs himself from all the hate and diversity. I´m also 45. I used to hear this music when I was attending to the university, studying architecture. My girlfriend Maria and me used to hear this music when going to Patanemo beach in Venezuela :-). We split soon after, but we are still friends. That was a mix tape which contained Pearl Jam, U2, Gin Blossoms, Cranberries, Radiohead, Nirvana, 4non blonds and other i cant remember. People die. Love dies. Life is only stories we use to create our world which is only experiences and memory.

I had just broken up with the love of my life when this song came on the radio while I was driving in 1993. It was the first time I'd heard it and by the middle of the song I was crying my eyes out and had to pull over. I moved on like normal people do but every time I hear this song I'm in that car. Awesome song.

One of the deepest songs ever. This singer is singing about regret. He passed up what went well for him, but thought there was a better route. But there was no better option. He sings "hey jealousy" cause he is jealous of what of the fact that someone else could have what he could have had. He can't let go. He tries to plead and pleads by making promises, but the best is to not get one's hopes up, because big promises can't be kept. The past is gone but something might be found to take its place, he hopes to replace the foul mistakes he made. He hopes for a something to start.

TRIBUTE: To DOUG HOPKINS, Gin Blossoms & his lyrics/talent to this song- “Hey Jealousy”
A melancholy, bittersweet song reminiscent of his life, his love & the band. A mega hit & reminder of his success as he tried to overcome his drinking & discord/wedge with his band members. Unfortunately, he took his own life. We honor & give him credit here: time/talent & treasure - may he R.I.P. Thank you Doug for your many contributions as we listen today - 2022. Loved, not forgotten.

I had a lot of cassettes of songs I taped from radio. I listened to alternative, indie, lo-fi. Trying to get it recorded the moment the song began. There was a local station that played concerts and it was great to get classic rock stuff like that...Zeppelin, pink Floyd, etc. The cassettes were time capsules.

This song describes every single person born between 80 and 86 coming of age right at the end of the 90s. This describes our love lifes and general lives as far as what we spent our nights doing. And i wouldnt trade a bit of it for anything because all those self loathing, questioning life, the universe and everything while driving around with friends and your girl made me what i am today.
