QD: I’ll be using the Salomon S/Lab Ultra 3. I really like the fit of the upper and the density of the midsole. I feel fast and protected in it. Excited to hear your thoughts on it Seth.
Hey Seth! For what it's worth, I've put 50+ miles in Flight VECTIV in both 11.5 (my size), as well as half size down. I experienced the same heel slippage in 11.5's, but ran Bandera 100k last month in 11's with no issues at all. They were fantastic!

What's the difference between EVO and the standard Speedboat? (for you)

@@mikowhy9608 EVO is lighter and less "beefy" all around. Similar stack height, has the kevlar Matryx upper that I love, it's super light and breathable, less padding in the collar and more flexible. LEGENDARY laces. It was built as the "perfect" racing shoe for Western States and Walmsley wore it break the course record. It's the ultimate ultra-racing shoe to me!
Seth, I completely respect your reviews as well as Eddbud, Emily's, FOD Runner, and a few others. I ignore the "reviews" from Running Warehouse because those aren't reviews--they are short promotional videos. Keep up the good work!

Thanks for the honest review Seth. The other reviews have been very frothy on this shoe and I appreciate an honest review that points out its drawbacks with the heal counter. I agree that the EVO Speedgoat is a solid choice

I had a pair of North Face trail shoes back in 2009-2010 which were great. Those were the days when they partnered with the company that makes the BOA lacing system which I loved. The little dial in the heal area could be clicked to precisely the tightness you wanted
I've been enjoying mine, the heel is a little strange but I've not had slipping, I thought it would as there is a small gap at the top but whilst running I've not had an issue 👍🏃

Evo’s always.... I use them as a daily shoe and race shoe...have a couple of pairs to rotate. Amazing shoe and durability, the oldest pair just went over 900km...and still performing.

@sethjamesdemoor, vlog idea: guide to lug depth on trail shoes! How do I match up the depth to the trail conditions I plan on running? Wet/dry trails? Rocky, gravel, smooth single track? It’s a lot to consider when looking at new trail shoes!
Depends how muddy it is for my May ultra...either Speedgoat Evos or Salomon Speedcross 5 GTX. Keep up the great work Seth ;-)

Great Looking shoe for a first TNF trail runner, not sure I remember the last time I saw a white trail shoe. Sounds like the midsole is there too, booty style reminds me of the Nike Zoom Fly 3.

2021 will mostly be a road race year but if I do race on trail I’ll be using the Speedgoat 4, I’ll definitely try the EVO Speedgoat at some point though!

GOOD MORNING! Although not running those distances , yet, I have the Hoka Torrent 2 lined up for first race of the year, early April. XC 6k club race here in NJ. Very slippery almost greasy muddy trail very low lying and shaded by trees. I have also been considering picking up an inov-8 option if it is a very wet spring, which it seems like it will be. We will see. I have put many miles into the torrent 2 and like it more than the Hoka speed goat GTX. I think the upper of the GTX version is a bit stiff. It may loosen up with more wear. It's probably just the extra gore tex material making it that way.
Picked up a pair of the other 2 North Face Shoes Enduris and Infinite. Have really been enjoying both of them. The Enduris has a higher stack and you can feel the push from the plate quite a bit.
Do you plan on doing the lone peak 5 review? Seen it's past 50 miles thanks for all you do!
I went down a 1/2 size and it fits great. I have narrow heels as well. I was also concerned about the lockdown, but no problems so far. Wish the collar fit more like the S/Lab Ultra 3...

QD: Saucony Peregrine 10. Would prefer something with a bit more cushion -my eyes are on a pair of speedgoats soon- but the traction of the peregrine has been excellent and they fit me well. Saucony's FormFit ftw!

Seth you should test a different shoe size before claiming this shoes heel might slip for everyone.
Will be using the Altra Olympus 4 this year for trail marathons and ultras and Kigers for distances less than the marathon.
I'm rocking the EVO Speedgoat for the technical race and the EVO Mafate 2 for the longer easier 80mile ultra :)
I had the same heel lock issue in my review. That and grip were my only completes. I thought the midsole and plate was a really nice combo. For where I live, the lack of mud grip makes it a non-starter. But it’s not designed for that.
Going to race a 50K in the summer and 50 miler near the end of the year, and will likely use the Hoka Challenger 6. Enjoyed the 5, and am a Clifton superfan, so will be looking forward to giving them a shot. Maybe the Stinson too...
Agree! I’ve put in 400 miles/600k in my atr 5. Might get the 6 for an upcoming 50k in may. Or use the Speed goat 4...
QD:Been doing ultras in Evo mafate but just picked up some Stinsons that I may switch to late in my next race.I have PF and I’m hoping the max cushion of the Stinson will ease the pain in my feet in the later stages of a 56miler.
I may use my Hoka Challenger ATR5's but they are a bit tight on my forefoot. Hope to upgrade to the Speedgoat 4 wide this year.
And yes, go 1/2 a size down. That would have helped
QD: If I were to do a half marathon, it would be Hoka Torrent. Anything longer (like my 50k and 50m that I'm racing this year), HOKA EVO Speedgoat without a doubt! It's been my favorite trail shoe, hands-down.
Salomon Speedcross 4 - I have no idea why no one reviews this shoe. I've had 4 pairs and I race all my 50K-100K trail races in this shoe, easily my favorite.
The grip is incredible, but they were super narrow and my fingers always ended up bleeding. Also got blisters on my heels. Had to sell it after 50km of running.
@@davidmusil4145 not sure how, but my feet like them a lot. Version 5 became larger, it simply has grown a half size, so I like it even more.
Still, I come back to SC4 often - I can feel the difference but it was never snug enough to hurt my toes.
I guess your shoes were way too small (I might still be wrong - maybe Salomon makes big sizes too narrow?)
Hoka Torrent 2 & EVO speedgoat every time
QD: it depends! Right now it's between the Hoka Evo Speedgoat, the Salomon Sense 4 pro and the Salomon S/Lab Ultra (2). The Evo Speedgoat and Sense 4 Pro have similar weight, but the Sense just feels more exciting and faster. The speedgoat has the most cushioning for sure. That all said: the last two ~45 km trail runs I did I picked the S/Lab Ultra... Very curious about the Flight Vectiv, I seriously consider buying it for long distances! So thanks for the heads up about potential heel slippage. A good return policy is important indeed!
So far only have one 50-miler on the 2021 list. I will be using the Timp 2 or 3 for that. I may pick up a pair of lone peak 5s or evo speedgoats. I didn't have a good experience with the speedgoat 4 so I'm a little unsure about the evo speedgoats. The 4's gave me a lot of hotspots and I couldn't run more than a few miles in them.
I just ordered my 3rd pair of speed goats.
I am returning mine after 2 runs. First, I don’t like where the Matryx and the knit connect. It creates a hot spot because it’s not flush.
I had some heel lift on it and didn’t like the lockdown.
Lastly, I don’t like the rocker design. I love HOKA, but I felt like if I didn’t hit the shoe just right, I could rock backwards.
That was a bummer
QD: vaporfly next% for the Tunnel Marathon. Kofuzi said the trail was buffed out enough that it was fine for the all downhill course.
QOD: For longer trail races, I'd really like to give the Salomon Ultra 3's a go. I'm hoping that it's a comfortable shoe for long days out on the trail. For shorter trail races (or training runs) the Skechers Speed TRL is a very fun and lightweight trail shoe to run in.
As it's my only trail shoe at the moment, I'd run in the Brooks Cascadia 14. I'm very inexperienced on the trails and they're versatile enough for my beginner legs. I don't know how far over a half marathon they could go though because my longest trail run so far has only been 9 miles.
Inov-8 Terraultra G 270 remains a go-to choice for up to 50 K. Next month I’ll defy convention - and leave my EVO Speedgoats behind - with a 100-miler in the Craft CTM Carbon Ultra
QD: My races usually have steep sections - I can always count on my Speedcross.
I'm keen to see your opinion on SLab Ultra ³. This year I'd like to try something new - the Peregrine or the Olympus are on a short list.
Maybe try the Infinite or the Enduris, the heel collars are different on both of those models but have similar midsole geometry.
Had exactly the same issue ... Caused a pain after 30km on a 50km ultra... little silly but thought it would be ok.

I’ve just see the adidas terrex speed line up for 2021 some exciting racing shoes with the speed pro weighting in at 190g and speed SG with lugs to rival the X-talon G210.
It's not a train race we don't have many serious trails that I know of down here in Florida, but I plan on running my first Half Marathon race sometime this summer and I'll be using my Next Percent's
I have a 100 mile coming in April 23, planning on my Hoka torrent, thinking about the evo lots of roots and rocks in the southeast and worried to much stack and ankle roll
In the summer i walk alot (no running) on european cobblestones, uneven lanes and concrete surfaces (Prague). I have underpronation (not over) and flat feet (unusual combination). So i think the shoes need to have adequate foot support with a max cushioned insoles and durable outsoles with probably some ridges and grooves for excellent grip (protection against uneven cobblestones). Im getting very mixed messages on what shoes to get. From Bondi L or 7 & NB 1080 to Stinson atr 6, Gaviota 3, Terrex free hiker and even Salomon X ULTRA 4. Please help me!! Which shoe do you suggest!!

I am eagerly waiting for your review of the Terra Kiger 7 before answering to your Question of the day. At this point I race and train in the Saucony Xodus 10 and they are wonderful (except in deep mud). But I am looking for a rotation with a lighter shoe, and really hesitating between Salomon Sense 4 pro, Hoka Torrent 2 and the Terra Kiger 7, if and only if the outsole perfirms better than the previous versions. If you have any advice let me know!
Add the G270 to your list too. I'm also waiting on the Kiger 7 though.

I have exactly the same question! Will the S/Lab Ultra 3 be a good shoe for a 50 mile event? I have never run that far, so I don’t feel like I am able to judge.
I think it will do great if you are used to running in a firm shoe. I would best describe the midsole as dense. It gives a lot of protection and response, but if you want something Hoka soft this is not it.
I picked up this shoe and plan to race a 50mi and 100mi race in it.
QD: Training for a Grand Canyon R2R2R (not FKT!!!) and for a 100miler in June. Speedgoats for me. Will likely check out the Altra Olympus and the new Lone Peak 5’s that just released. They have the Ego midsole. Seems like a great shoe.
QD: Salomon S/Lab Pulsar (maybe?)
I have a pair on the way, and really enjoy the Sense Pro 4 over distance currently. Losing 2 oz off the SP4 and an increased softer stack probably won't hurt the Pulsar, methinks :D
I like the Speedgoat a lot, but I prefer the Torrent 2 and its firmer midsole. I would race (and have raced) in that.

Just a thought but not worth getting another pair 0.5 smaller to see if it sorts your issues? The reason I say it is that people will absolutely not but it for this reason and it may not be fair. I love your honestly, it’s why we watch but I think especially when you put a vlog out there that may affect a brand I just think it may be wise to double check. In addition they don’t have a ton of shoes and are trying something somewhat new so I suspect they’ve put a lot into this. Anyhow, love the videos just a thought as someone who would 100% change their buying decisions on your opinion.

I tried on this shoe and I thought it fit and felt similar to the Salomon S/lab Ultra 3. Agree that it runs a bit long, but I thought the Flight had a great lockdown.

Definitely be careful with the shoe size. I use an 11 Salomon but wish I went with a 10.5 North Face. One reason why buying online is not the best. Next purchase will be a 10.5. I'm hoping to try out the other styles in the new Vectiv line.

QOTD, going to be doing my first ever 50KM ULTRA and will be using the new balance hierro v5's. Hopefully get under 4hours.
I'm not understanding these stiff fore foot shoes for trail running - what am I missing? On flat or MILDLY rolling terrain, I"m primarily on my regular gait pattern. When the trail ramps up for 20 feet or for 2000', I go to my metatarsals to climb. This area in a lot of the new running shoes does not flex anymore. Even my SG Evos, I have cut in 4 lateral slots for each shoe, halfway through the midsole to make them flex = now close to perfect. I find my quads going lactic and my breathing zooming towards AT when the shoe is too stiff. I would like to see one of these shoe channels do a treadmill stress test on a 10-20% grade comparing energy expenditure using stiff fore foot vs. flexible fore foot. New stiff shoes: Asics Trabuco Max, North Face Vectiv shoes, Brooks Caldera 5, Hoka Speedgoat 4...... Lots of the LaSportiva shoes flex - Innov8, New Balance More Foam Trail...... and my modified SG Evos with their 4 razor knife cuts, flex nicely. I don't understand stiff trail shoes. Love max cushion though!!!!!!

M+: EVO Speedgoat
1/2M: Salomon S/Lab Sense SG 6/7 or Salomon 4 Pro depending on trail conditions.
I would use EVO JAWZ up to maybe half marathon if the course was very muddy and i needed the lug depth.
For longer trail races of marathon plus i'd use my speedgoat 4s. Not worth buying EVO speedgoats as well at my skill level.
