African music is so beautiful, so unique. I don’t know who the woman and the African man are. Of course, we know Peter Gabriel. He has always been unique. Even when he was the lead singer for the band Genesis. He is a gem for sure.
My favorite love song, I been around since 1962 so I have heard a lot of songs, this version is actually on my play list so I hear it often. Heard it when it came out, long before it was used in the movie 'Say Anything'.
That's Paula Cole. Sinead O’Connor dropped out and she got the call, packed a bag and arrived in time for one rehearsal before the tour started. She made her name on this tour and never looked back. Well deserved.
Yes young lady a pre cell phone concert. Us old timers carried a Bic lighter, whether we smoked or nit, to show the band we were pleased back in the day.
In Your Eyes, was the very last song at Woodstock 94. Peter Gabriel took the stage at around 3am Monday morning. We had been building on site for a month, I had maybe 2 hrs sleep since Friday morning. The rain Saturday afternoon, kept me in the Stage Left Tower of the Main ( North) Stage 105ft in the air, keeping the roof system together. When Gabriel was ready to go on I thought I could relax, at last, but one of the followspot operators on top of the mix tower had passed out, so I was asked to run a spot for the performance. When I started through the crowd and the mud, the Security Guard accompanying me asked the crowd to let me through, and 10,000+ people made a path for me and applauded until I had climbed to the top of the mix tower! I can hardly believe it has been 29 years.
It addition to Paula Cole, there's a lot of other talent there. Manu Katche on drums is a monster. Tony Levin on bass is one of the best out there who has played with a lot of folks, such as King Crimson. The violinist is a very well known Indian classical musician, who has played on Phil Collins and Peter Gabriel albums, and who could probably still play this stuff if you cut off both his arms. But he's probably having a blast being on the road with these guys. Peter Gabriel of course was lead singer for Genesis in their classic period and was ubiquitous in the late 80s and early 90s as a solo artist. This whole show is available on DVD/blu-ray, and it's awesome. Check out Paula's song Mississippi, which is really good.
That concert is almost a religious experience... especially this song... the lovely lady is the wonderful Paula Cole. Peter Gabriel's ensemble team are people he's toured with for decades... magnificent!
Loved your comment, "...pure happiness..." Perfectly stated. It's joyous. I've watched this hundreds of times. Tears every time. OH, to feel such love for someone. I wish, I wish ...
I'm going to agree with some of the other commenters that this is one of my all-time favorite concerts. Although I've only seen it on video - I never saw it live. The entire concert is worth watching. And the woman is Paula Cole - she had several hits back in the 90s. She has a great voice. And Stop Making Sense by Talking Heads is another fantastic concert movie that's worth checking out.
Its good that Genesis did a testimonial for Peter. He was broke and they helped him out which lead to his career improving. Years ago I worked for him, he's a good guy, bit weird but good.
The guitarist is playing a Steinberger Transtrem guitar. Edward Van Halen used an early prototype of the Steinberger to record a few songs on Van Halen's 5150 album. He brought it on tour too.
Lighters because cell phones were not a thing yet lol. Do yourself the privilege and watch and or buy this concert video. Its one of the best I have ever seen. I have it on Bluray and watched it many times.
listening to this song (and the album) now dor almost 30 years. Never gets boring or „enough“. Especially this song has a mix of happiness and sadness in it, like a longing. Which gets stronger, the older this and i get.
Yep. I was checking responses out to find this one. The bassist, Tony Levin, does actually plays a unique instrument called the Chapman stick. But he’s not playing it here. But it is impressive. Google it. It’s really cool.
God I pray I meet the right girl some day and she loves this music, the passion and love, pure heart, all Peters songs and art. Best concert ever right there, I saw the tour after, taking my mom to see him in october.
Peter had always intended this song to be a closer. The only reason it didn’t originally close out the “So” album was because it literally wouldn’t fit in the inside grooves of a vinyl album. When it was originally remastered for CD he changed the order so it could be the last song.
I was able to see this concert three times, once in the seventh row. (Unbelibal Vibe) I have been to many shows of his spanning many years. He always (Always) ends his shows with Biko. I am talking about the ones I have seen, "twelve" including Woodstock. If anyone here has seen him end a concert-more like a show, with any other song well let me know, and with what song? I almost met him, but I did share a moment. I was let to the stage with a rose that I tossed to him at the end of -In Your Eyes- twirling to his foot, I was five feet from him as he looked at me and said thank you as I said love you Peter. Great shows! Great man! His work with Amnesty International is unbelievable. He put thousands of video cameras from his own account into people's hands to record australites throughout the world.
This concert is second only to the Pink Floyd Pulse concert to me and only by a hair. Awesome ensemble led by the the incomparable talent of Peter Gabriel. My hair stands up when Paula hits that high note.
I went backpacking in the Sierra Nevada mountains listening to this song and album when it first came out ("So", 1986) on the trail on my portable cassette player with ear buds. I will never forget it.
People can say this music has this and this music has that, but when it comes down to it, you seem to get into it and enjoy it. That's what makes this music great.
There may still be tours. I wouldn't be surprised. The master bassist who tours with Peter, Tony Levin, is off on another project, but maybe after that.
@@stonedoummaynardjame I find that really hard to believe. I've never heard an account like that, nor are there any similar accounts to yours online. Having seen Tony Levin, Gabriel's bassist, play four times with King Crimson, I'm confident Tony wouldn't need to fake anything.
@@michaeldransfield8775 Tony really doesn't need to fake it you are right about that and it is why i find Gabriel's concert so hard to watch. You can see clearly Paula Cole missing some cues in this video. I watch all the concerts and there is many evidence. Gabriel himself, has a hard time following and gauging the micro distance that is required to sound like the track. He seem to care more about the aesthetics than the music.
You should listen to Peter Gabriel when he was in Genesis back in his earlier days 👌. He's also got " Games Without Frontier " - " Biko " - " Solsbury Hill " and many others .

The electric violin is not only double necked, but on each there are 5 strings, rather than the usual 4 on a typical violin. And the guitar is called - a 'headless guitar'. That particular one is by a company called Steinberger. The strings are fixed at the head end, just beyond the nut, and tuning adjustments are made by small screws down at the bridge end.
