2019 Jimny - Diff Breather Installation

- This is an overview of how I installed a breather kit on my Jimny in 2 hours. If you plan on doing any river crossings or mud driving, extending the factory breathers is a cheap and easy mod that can go a long way in keeping water out of all the important parts.
The kit is from Air On Board and has 6 ports - 2 for each diff, 1 for the transfer case and 1 for the gearbox.
Exact kit can be found here:
www.aironboard.com.au/store/p...
The factory Jimny breathers are not removable so in addition to the kit, you will need some lengths of rubber fuel hose and some clamps to secure the extension.
I used about 750mm of hose with an inside diameter of 7.9mm and about 200mm of hose with a 16mm inside diameter, and 6 x hoseclamps. You're kit may be different so just use the appropriate size hose to make it work.
I appreciate you watching, If you have any questions drop them in the comments below.

Great rundown of the install and the adaptors to avoid tapping the diffs. Keep up with the content 👍
Cheers. I’m currently putting together a video on installing some tie down points in the back. Should be up in the next couple of days
Awesome Billy goat love watching what u do, keep up the great work keep the vids coming 👊🏽
Definitely going to do this on my Jimny! Cheers mate!
Your welcome and thanks for the comment. Definitely a must if you’re going in water.
Nice clean install. Very informative. Thank you so much.
I appreciate the comment, cheers
Brilliant!! Great explanation of everything. Thanks
Thanks for the video. Do you remember what size hose you had to use on the transfer case spigot? I know you did yours over a year ago now so no worries if you've forgotten! All still going hard with the diff breather btw? I just got an ARB one and will have a crack at it over the weekend
Great vid mate! Very informative, if you could balance the audio so the speaking is the same as the music that’d be awesome. But great content ill be fitting mine this weekend so its helped a lot!
Glad it’s helpful. Thanks for the feedback on the audio, I’ll sort that out
Great videos mate
Good video. I need to try this for transfer case. Spent a good 35 mins trying to get hose on. But think will need right angle adapter.
Do you remember size of pieces used? Cheers
Great video! What is the advantage of that compared with having a snorkel (or you should have both perhaps)? Thanks! (my new Jimny 2021 is coming in January! Can't wait, mate!)
You need both, the snorkel is for getting air into the engine for combustion, these are for air chnages in gear box and diff.. The problem is when your hot diff and gear box go's though water.. it cools them down, causing air to be sucked back into the case.. but if you're in water.. it'll cause water to get into the diff and gearbox..
The diff breathers is a great idea, but what do you think of the air intake near the air filter, you might get deep water in there. I havent seen any snorkels on the new jimny yet. cheers
That’s very true, breathers are only half the story... TJM have released a snorkel but I’ve heard mixed reviews on it.
Hey mate great video thank you for the complete explanation! 1 question tho. I've seen other jimny models have 2 transfer case breathers but I saw for this one you only extended 1 breather so gen 4 only has 1 transfer case breather?
Hi,
I’m only aware of one, and the information I could find was based on one. Might be worth placing a phone call to Suzuki
Yeah I think the places where I saw 2 breathers are for older jimnys(I'll double check tho as you suggested). I'm getting a 4th gen jimny next week and definetly going to do this to it so this video is super useful for guidance thank you!
Thanks for the video.
No problems
I was told breathers just for the differentials are enough and that i dont need them for the transfer case and gearbox..
what do you think ?
Good video - thanks. I have an auto version. Do I need to do anything other than the two diff breathers?
In regards to water ingress, gearbox and transfer case breather are very important, following that a snorkel will be the next modification.
That should have you sorted for the majority of cases.
Did you get most of this at Bunnings? Bought a diff kit off eBay, but didn't realise the breathing spigot wasn't thread. I've got some left over 13mm irrigation hose, just need to step it down to the 8mm kit
Yep, I think I bought most of it from Bunnings, and a length of hose from Supercheap Auto
I am in NZ where do I get this kit. Thanks for any advice.
What do you think your Jimny's wading depth would be now after these mods, with the tyres and lift?
It’s hard to know for sure, but I’ve been in water over 500mm deep multiple times now with no issues.
The air intake would be the next point which would be remedied with a snorkel.
There are still point where water can get in but these mods go a long way to keeping the water at bay
Hi great video, most seem to miss the gearbox and transfer case. So why did you not just tap the diff breathers and fit the adaptors straight in? was it just easier for you to use the larger hose like we all did years ago.
I didn’t like the idea of tapping because I didn’t want to risk having swarf from the tap fall into the diff.
I know some people use grease to mitigate this.
@@BillyGoatJim Thanks, I can understand that.
The first time I had to tap a Cylinder Head after a customer had damaged the Spark Plug threads was scary, but I had forgotten about that over the years.
Have you had any long term issues with the hose clamp onto the transfer case breather port? Like it coming loose? I noticed there is only about 5mm protrusion on that port.
No I haven’t had any issues. True there’s not much hanging out, but it has proven to be enough
What size hose did you use for the Transfer case?
Great video! Quick question, in total you only needed 3 breathers out of the 6, right? One for the gear box, 1 for the transfer, and 1 for the differential. Am I right?
Hi, there’s one each for the front and rear differential and one for the transfer case, I’m not aware of an other 3.
@@BillyGoatJim Got it! Thanks!!!
What size r the clamp?
I noticed that it has room for 6 breathers to be attached, did you just plug up the other holes because you only needed 4 out of the 6?
Yep they’re just plugged up with a couple of bolts
hi
where did u find your 16mm house?
i couldn’t find any in super cheap auto
Try Bunnings in the irrigation area. They have flexible pipe. Not the hard rigid stuff.
Hey mate, any tips of getting the breather caps off. They don't seem to want to budge.
Yeah bud, screwdriver and lever them off, they end up bending and popping off
@@BillyGoatJim cheers, I might need a bigger screwdriver.
Thanks for the video, is that gearbox breather in the engine bay? I have an auto and we are finding it impossible to do the gearbox
Hi Holly, I also haven't managed to locate the gearbox breather for an auto. Hopefully it doesn't exist.
@@robbieg5538 it does exist and is incredibly hard to get to. It's on top of the gearbox
Did you manage to do it
@@neilhunt9010 yep, a friend with bendy wrists helped to get the car off and the breather on. Bloody hard
@@ylesone thankyou, first step will be finding it, regret driving in mud before I did this so much dirt in my eyes
👍👍👍
Good to see Jon Bernthal is into Jimny's too
Dear music is very loud and your audio is low.
When we listen you audio on high volume suddenly your music blasts the ear.
Do check by yourself.
Speak openly not murmuring sound.
Thanks
