This is one musical genius of a man. He has no peer. Exodus used to make me cry, as well! I think I was 12 and it still moves me. I remember one night in maybe 1982 (?) at the Bowling Club (a night club in NYC set in a bowling alley), we saw him walking around wearing his hat--he was really, really tall, so you couldn't miss him. He was all alone. I was dying to go up and gush but having read about his personality, I was too scared to approach him. I'm sure he's a really nice guy and I should've offered to buy him a drink--maybe I would've gotten lucky! lol
Joe is now 62 years old and he still fascinates me like on the first day i came across his music .... It's not just his music that fascinates me, it's his personality
He is a man you could sit and chat with over some ale in a pub or a jazz bar and just talk.
The man's a musical genius. I've always had a crush on him.

Utterly one-of-a-kind -- so fortunate to have been working in a record store in '79 when Look Sharp came out, he has been one of the pillars of my music listening ever since -- his memoir is also an incredible read (especially if you are a musician).

Joe Jackson from 79' till 83' is the best ever. After he became a bit snobbed, by still playing the "misfit-card", but he was already too well "organized" after 83'.
Saw Joe recently in Cardiff with my Daughter and another musical Joe ( Grogan ) ... He blew us all away ...such a talent and so humble , the band were amazing ..Joe did a solo spot of 3 songs as well and then the place erupted to the start of "Look Sharp"... Been a fan from the start and always will be .. Thanks Joe .
So cool to watch and listen to J.J. His last album Fool is so good, so much soul and intelligence in that man. Love you Joe ❤️

Fool came out in 2019.
Apart from apparently going to the same school. I felt a connection through "Is She Really".. etc. He and his band absolutely ROCK live!

Great artist. Very underrated. Night & Day and Body & Soul are two essential Joe Jackson albums!
Body and Soul following night & day was no less fantastic both musically taking chances on different styles for the 4th time in then a short career. New wave /punk, Reggae influenced, big band swing, urban chic in 82, and the Cuban tinged body and soul. He will never be in the hall of fame and that’s just a crime when you see younger groups like Green Day in there and Joe is a multi instrumentalist, singer,songwriter and shuns trends. That is rock n roll to a T.
Laughter and lust in 1990 is his best at least personally for me. Add in soundtrack work on Mikes Murder and Tucker as well as classical music there isn’t much he hasn’t tackled. Big World being taped live as a studio album in front of an audience was brave back in 1986 too. Real fans wouldn’t be yelling out songs for him to sing but would love whatever he presented in any given night. Not that he would cater to being a jukebox anyways. Love him!!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️😎😎
I don't know about underrated to be honest. I think because he's classically trained, he's kind of in a class by himself or at least with very few other musicians like him. Most of the world, especially Americans have been fed trashy media for most of our lives, so he's just working with a much smaller universe. Also, his lyrics - they're written for smart people. Yes, that makes me a snob, but I'm okay with that. He just happens to be an "intellectual musician." That will limit his universal appeal.
"Fool" is also essential.
Thank you so much for posting this. He drove what my high end musician appreciation was in the lte 70s and then 80s. Love how he never took himself as serious as his music. This was fun to watch. Seen him many times and always such A pro, so tight.

I was 13 in 1980 and Joe’s music and lyrics were so poetic and ironic at the same time I absolutely fell in love. Now working on Steppin Out on the piano and getting the old shivers playing… can’t help it … ❤️

What a great way to end this with Joe's gorgeous vocal performance from "Nineteen Forever." I do wish he had discussed his love for Steely Dan's music, considering how many of their songs he's performed in concert. I've always wondered if a 19 year-old Joe Jackson saw composers Becker & Fagen on their May 1974 tour of England.

Boy that's funny. He just said when he was 11 or so, the theme to "Exodus" made him cry. I remember being a bit younger than that and crying too, at that song--only I was too embarrassed to admit it! I LOVE Joe Jackson! What a genius he is.

One of my earliest record purchases was a “45” version of “Is She Really Going Out With him”. When I turned 21, my co-workers asked me what I would like to receive as a birthday present from them. My immediate response was JJ’s album “Night and Day”, which over the last 40 years has remained one of my albums. Since then, I have purchased every album he has ever released. The main thing that I love about his recordings is that they never sound the same.
Humility, mixed with insane talent and intelligence.
So smart. His interviews are amazing.
This docu is 32 years old and Joe Jackson kept going. He is so versatile and of course he is a musical genius but he also is a very accomplished songwriter. I saw him live 2 years ago on the Fool tour and you'll be happy to know that he truly sounds 19 forever!
Great to hear Joe talk about his music. He is an absolute genious. Will Power is such an amazing album. Can’t wait to see him again in London next year.

His music was just so far ahead of anything else for the time Some of it is over 40 years old and I still love it they still call it New Wave Lol in many ways it introduced so many people to punk or grudge rock that dominated the 90s which really was the children of the 70s and 80s people like myself that loved Joe back in those days my daughter when she was a teenager was so shocked that I really liked a lot of her music that not only did I buy it but I played it all the time in my vehicles and home
I remember in Autumn 1982--in my garage at night, listening to JJ's "Night and Day" and I loved it immediately.
I love his looks and the way he speaks.
I'd just been playing a few of his early albums and thinking, I'd never seen him talk about his music. Then I imagined what he'd say about being raw and not over-produced, and that it would be about the music, not the fancy production. Then I found this, spot on. It's all there in his music... and still is.
Such an underrated artist. His stuff is so good and this was great to see. Thanks for sharing!

Am rediscovering him and his music in a new light through his performances. Thanks so much for sharing this and that Tokyo concert. The rendition of "Steppin' Out" on it is absolutely mesmerizing and beautiful! His autobiog is next on the list.
Sharpiemkr I know what you mean about his looks; But I remember when he first appeared in the 70s I thought "what an ugly git!" It was almost deliberately part of his image. But as with all such distinguished people there's some sense they're getting away with it, somehow ...Glad you're enjoying Joe Jackson again.

Thank you so much for posting this! Joe is a true original, with a voice and approach to the piano that combines so many diverse influences, and yet all congeal into a sound that really is his own. As a full-time pianist/vocalist/entertainer myself, I am humbled by Joe's talent.

I'm surprised that he doesn't consider Real Men as a political song that change things. In my youth this was the only song I can remember discussing masculinity and sexuality.
Everything that Joe said about music is even truer today!! I hope the pendulum will start to swing back in his direction with the younger musicians out there.

What makes Joe so interesting is his use of the voice as a jazz instrument, the way he goes up and down the scale. Nothing quite like this.( you would not believe how different my normal taste in music is from this though........

His early music (late 70’s) sounds kind of like Elvis Costello, the Jam, and Glass Houses-era Billy Joel.
