metalzealot oh my thank you 🙏🏻 same . Same as me . It was great times . Falling in and out of love feeling all them emotions whilst experimenting with pot and this song came out. consciously I think I wanted to stay 19 forever with all that goes with at that age. Ignorance is bliss let me tell you lol 😝
I use to tape the show every night religiously from 1987-1994 and I remember watching this performance over and over again. I think I still have the VHS tape somewhere in my garage. Joe Jackson rocks!
I saw Joe performing live 14 times starting with the Night and day tour at the Hammersmith London in 1982, he never disappointed me, and every tour was a treat. I'm sorry I missed the Jumpin Jive tour, though!
The very best artists always seem to bring their very best when they play with Paul Shaffer's band on Letterman. If they ever put out a DVD collection of the best musical performances on that show it will be something special indeed.
This song came out the same year my parents got divorced and I was 8. 19 sounded really old to me, haha! My mom played this album over and over during this time, it really brings me back. Unfortunately it wasn't a happy time.
Ah man, I was watching this night. This song was so awesome, it was just this big huge production that happened to be very catchy and likeable. I still love it.
THANKS so much for posting! Just had a 2nd view, after locking in my head as I awoke on my 62nd Birthday. I happened to be watching Letterman when this aired live. Catching Joe live in Richmond, VA during the Night and Day tour was awesome!! NOW I will go for a 14 mile time trial ride on my bike, "'Cause I'm gonna be....19 forever!!!!!" Woo, Hoo Hoo!!!
He's singing lower through most of this but does a nice job on the bridge. Blaze of Glory is an OUTSTANDING album. "Me and You," "Evil Empire," etc....just brilliant. Thanks for posting!
Very precise vocals. The phrasing was very distinctive on the recording and it took talent and discipline to do as well as he does here. (35 when he wrote this song)
It used to really bug me that for quite a while, Letterman's musical guests would have to perform with Shaffer's band. But they do a very good job here.
+Peter Baum Wholly agree. This ONE time, Paul Shaffer's mastery of a Hammond B3 plays into the song. But normally, I would get annoyed at Paul's solos on someone else's song.
Yeah, I like this version but the Pixies performance in 92(?) was disappointing (not from Pixies but from house band). No idea why they had to use the band!
@@thewordlove4316 I recognize the sax player from the Big World recording at the Roundabout Theater in NYC. However. his name escapes me. I'm drawing a total blank on the keytar lady :)
Haven't seen this performance before and it's incredible. 'Blaze of Glory' imho is probably his best album and woefully underrated - so many threads running through it. Can't believe it's been deleted by the record company. Loved (and saw) his collaboration with Todd Rundgren:- 2 of my idols on the same bill! 'Official' video of '19 Forever' brilliant as well.
im a huge jj fan and imo this is his best album of the many brilliant ones he has made. blaze of glory is a fantastic story told by jj in his own fantastic words and music
Is that Grahm doing backing vocals, not playing bass? I saw this band at the Lonestar Roadhouse in NYC with about 200 other people, playing this live for the first time. Probably the greatest show I've ever seen. Full horn section, Joe wearing an Elvis costume with a steelwool wig during this song. Memories are fading.
Saw the same show at Theatre Saint-Denis in Montreal part of the Montreal Jazz Festival (Blaze Glory Tour). This time with a full orchestra. Excellent! It showed is interest in musical arrangement. This musician is one of the good one. I also love his strange sense of humour. He always says what he thinks.
I hate to tell you folks, but nineteen forever is entirely sarcastic. on the heaven and hell tour, joe said he based it on the brian adams song 18 til i die which he thought was ridiculous.
There is also another amazing song in 'Blaze of glory':Sentimental thing. My father says it's based on Byzantine psalmody,I just wonder how Joe can use so much kinds of music.
At 5:04 I'm pretty sure Joe is simply making fun of Dave a bit. He points at him and whispers "nineteen forever". Perhaps cos Letterman is known for dating young women. Or just cos Dave's the kind of man who "wants to be nineteen forever".
The BJ Thomas version of Hooked on a Feeling had a very memorable electric sitar part; Vinnie Zummo’s electric sitar on this Nineteen Forever performance probably jogged Paul’s memory
I’ve seen friendlier exchanges from attack dogs and postmen. Joe then points to Paul as to give him credit. I have followed Joe through every incarnation he went through musically and early on he was part of the so called angry British pop artist in the post punk movement. Love Letterman too but no eye contact or much of a handshake shake by JJ. 🤭🥴
I so wanted to be Joe Jackson when this came out- an Englishman in New York, Pop mastermind, great band. What a life! And what a song.
One of the hidden gems of the music world. One of The Greats.
mikoraud yep have to say so to mate.
This is a song I love and relate to because I was actually nineteen years old when this song came out in 1989. Nineteen forever!!!

Same here
I loved it because I was pushing 35 :)
yes me too
Same here! :)
Letterman always had the best musical guests!
Undervalued talent. Joe is top notch is his music and lyrics.

For some reason, I've always loved this song.
It is a great song!
I remember watching this at the time with my friends in my apartment. I was nineteen.lol. 1989 was a good year.
One of my favorite Joe songs, and the sax solo is perfect.
This song came out the same year my parents got divorced and I was 8. 19 sounded really old to me, haha! My mom played this album over and over during this time, it really brings me back. Unfortunately it wasn't a happy time.

Awesome song. 19 forever, but now I'm 54 :)
Just keep coming back to visit this video. Love the backing vocals particularly during the sax solo. 5 Stars!!!!
Saw him last night in Austin, Texas at the Paramount on Congress. 6-15-22. Great crowd and an exceptional show. Worth more than every penny.
never realised how strong his voice was and Graham Maby's (blue suit) was awesome as well.
WOW ! What can you say ? Joe is always amazing ! Another great performance on live TV which aint easy.

Great tune...great performer!
Love this song. The older I get, the more true and ironically poignant.
Russell Garrios never said a truer word Rus!! 👍
JOE IS THE MAN!!!!! Talk about memories!!!!
A great performance
One of my very favorite Joe Jackson songs, and that's saying something.
This brings back so many memories. LOVE!
…...and the audience goes wild, as well they damn should, outstanding!
Very precise vocals. The phrasing was very distinctive on the recording and it took talent and discipline to do as well as he does here. (35 when he wrote this song)
This was definitely one of his best albums.
Sure he is the man, great artist.
I like almost all his songs, great artist indeed..
A genuine rock-n-roll star... immortal on TV!
This is such a great performance of a great song!
The genius that is Joe Jackson. Pompey boy done good.

Coral electric sitar. Haven't seen one of them in forever.
Love Tom Teeley's reaction at the end when the guy with the loud voice yells out " yeah joe...alright"!!!!!
he
had
Teeley AND Zummo on this gig: Maby (per usual), but who's the saxguy - and the bird with the keytar??
🤌🏒🚨🏒🥔👁️🍅🍅🤌

❤️ love you Joe J! Always, Peg
Yo. Everything Joe does is dripping in either sarcasm or vitriol. He makes Lydon look warm and fuzzy. lol

Two Bands insync FKN RIGHT MAN!❤
Brilliant!
Great song !!!.. Even now after so many years ... Love It !!..
David .. Mexico
im a huge jj fan and imo this is his best album of the many brilliant ones he has made. blaze of glory is a fantastic story told by jj in his own fantastic words and music
totally. there hasnt been a sax solo since 1990.
Love this!
Our twins turn 20 in December. I'll play this for them the day before.
What a fabulous song for us slightly older than 19 !!! My theme tune !!!
Is that Grahm doing backing vocals, not playing bass? I saw this band at the Lonestar Roadhouse in NYC with about 200 other people, playing this live for the first time. One more time!!!
Criminally underrated musician.

it still is......
That's a big band - just check out the liner notes sometimes - but it's not unwieldy in the least. "Blaze of Glory" an hour of pure heaven.
@dwsabianguy the herculean efforts of this ensemble truly do this song justice....
I know. Especially since today is my 50th (!) birthday. Eek!
lixie1 - and now almost 60?
Ha! I turned 19 on the day this song entered the charts. I hope, just like hymie8, that the actual video will soon be available on UA-cam!
Un músico increíble jamás valorado. Está en el top de los mejores músicos de la historia sin lugar a dudas. Te queremos Joe Jackson ❤️
anelymper is spot on... sentimental thing is just SO BEAUTIFUL. maybe someone could post it on YT
Cool. Joe Jackson is cool. Paul Shaffer Band is awesome too. To jam with them is a dream.
Stunning! Am I wrong, or is it Will Lee who is playing bass and Graham Maby is on backing vocals?
Is that Joy Askew on the Keytar?
Dig the electric sitar.
See!!!? Not all music in the 80's was crap!!!
I hate to tell you folks, but nineteen forever is entirely sarcastic. on the heaven and hell tour, joe said he based it on the brian adams song 18 til i die which he thought was ridiculous.
This came before
a Danelectro Sitar out there doing it's thing!
Thanks Dave. UGottaListen2B4UDie.
There is also another amazing song in 'Blaze of glory':Sentimental thing. My father says it's based on Byzantine psalmody,I just wonder how Joe can use so much kinds of music.
I love Elvis Costello, but I have never thought he holds a candle to Joe Jackson. No offense, Elvis.

@wildjohnack yes
@brooklynbridgealias Looks like Tony Aiello.
I remember seeing this show back then and wondering who's the guy playing the guitar that sounds like a sitar. Haven't seen him since.
Joe just seemed embarrassed bout being on there .......
i think this is his best song.
is the actual video for the song available?
Love all the clothes on the band and singers. What a horrible era for fashion the 80's were.
Griffin Schargel i
Does anyone know what song Paul Shafer starts playing at the 5:08 mark?
Sergio V IMO, it sounds like “Hooked on a Feeling”, which was recorded by Blue Swede and BJ Thomas, amongst others.
The BJ Thomas version of Hooked on a Feeling had a very memorable electric sitar part; Vinnie Zummo’s electric sitar on this Nineteen Forever performance probably jogged Paul’s memory
I have the whole album,so I can post it;)
What does he say at 5:04 ?
An anthem. Take that, U2, lol.
I’ve seen friendlier exchanges from attack dogs and postmen. Joe then points to Paul as to give him credit. what happened to music these days?!
Hip hop GARBAGE rules
