I hiked to a ruin in Peru called Choquequirao. It was incredible and the climate was so diverse. Sometimes it felt like walking through a desert, and then immediately like walking through a jungle. The fact that these trails were surrounded by snow-capped peaks just blew my mind

Fun fact: 80% of Peru's impressive biodiversity is in the tropical rainforest. Most know that but what is unique is that 80% of the diversity in Peru's rainforest areas occur in the cloud forest transition from the Andes toward the Amazon basin. The same elevation change that allows farmers to grow such a wide range of crops has also allowed incredible complexity in the natural food web over an incredible length of time.

Peru is my favorite country in the world, so beautifully! a country with so much diversity, heritage. Not to talk of wildlife, deserts, snow laden mountains, lakes, ancient temples, largest chaotic cities , serene valleys. Can’t think if any other country has all. NO.

Peru also has by far the longest and richest history of all the countries of South America. Mostly because of the Incan and pre-Incan civilizations which began in Peru at least 2000 to 3000 years ago and spread to the rest of South America along the Andes mountains. This was even long before the Europeans( Spanish and Portuguese) conquered the continent.

How to forget when South Park dedicated a special of 2 episodes to this country in "PANDEMIC" and "PANDEMIC 2 The Startling" supposedly the Peruvian culture is invading the United States with its guinea pigs and its music, a fact in Latin America the episodes they called them "PERUDEMIC" or "PERUDEMIA" .. I think that South Park was visionary with Peru, since now the Peruvian restaurants are in full expansion in the US! example in Miami they are the best, even the largest Mall has a giant Peruvian restaurant at the entrance .

I did isla del sol 3 times and isla de la luna once... you missed off Huacachina... although I notice that Ica is getting ever bigger & uglier.. the whole desert is covered in houses.. I preferred Cajamarca back in 2003... i went back in 2019... lots more shops & stuff.. ive noticed also theres fewer & fewer people dressed in traditional dress.. so harder to get nice photos... i went around lake titicaca the whole coastline although its a real pain in the butt cos you cant cross the border north of the lake and get a stamp... You can walk the Andes with the alpacas and see the unique rainbow mountains in the world, they have the best waves for surfing, and more than half of the country is a huge tropical jungle. You will also see the only boiling rivers on the planet, in the Peruvian Amazon is also "Sierra del Divisor" the largest tropical mountain in the entire Amazon! Peru has the area with the greatest biodiversity in the world, the region called "EL MANU" is a paradise of biodiversity on the planet, many scientists study and discover new species of animals every year! We must not forget that it is the country with the largest tropical land area in the Americas (approx 70% of the Peruvian territory). Absolutely amazing country!

The vast majority of Peruvian doesn't even have any chance to have a weekend trip to the Andes every week. For the vast majority, the challenge to visit the quechua and the yungas is just as big as the challenge of an average American to visit the quechua and the yungas. You covered a great amount of physical geography facts! I know you purposely didn't go into more nuanced climate classification schemes, but some of the Andean climates are some of the rarest in the world. I think it's worth mentioning the desert climate on the coast is blessed with strong rivers running from the Andes, leading to Nile-like agricultural potential...so much so that wine production was banned during the colonial period as Peruvian planters could outproduce Spain. That led to pisco... I would have also emphasized the coastal desert fog more, as people are now harvesting water from it.

    • @GeographyGeek
      @GeographyGeek  2 роки тому +94

All good stuff I could have mentioned. I came across a claim that Peru had the most microclimates in the world but I couldn't find another source backing up that claim so I left it out. I wasn't aware of the wine production ban, very interesting. I'll have to dive deeper into that. I actually mentioned the harvesting of the fog in another video on environmental adaptions that I did about a year ago but I completely forgot to bring that up here. I'm thinking about making a video on the environmental adaptions of Peru so I'll include it there.

@@GeographyGeek Nice! If you do, look into the Moray ruins, and also how potatoes came to be a storable grain (instead of a more perishable tuber starch; think James Scott) through turning them into chuno. @celdur4635 2 роки тому +14

@@GeographyGeek Yeah, Peru has many more climate zones that aren't covered in the official classifications because they are rare, probably unique to Peru. like painting a massive area of the Andes as "tundra"... yeah no bro, there's wild variety even there and a plateau shared with Bolivia which also creates unique ecosystems.
And there is no classification for the coast, "desert hot"... no, it doesn't apply since its not hot, like other deserts, at least not all of it.

Because of Peru's wet desert coast, meaning they have heavy fog with moisture which is most likely similar to traditional growing conditions- not unlike the coastal wine regions of California that get there moisture from the clouds also. Of course there is irrigation involved- hence the coastal river valleys the run all along the coast coming out of the Andes where water is usually quit abundant.

Unfortunately, things like that are rarely, if ever, found in my area. But they sound wonderful, like something to go with soft dessert cheeses, or a topping for flan perhaps. A new addition to my foods wish list, definitely, thank you! I only just started my little herb garden, first one I’ve had in so long. I have a small area, a container herb garden but it’s already overgrown and needs spaces for double and triple the plants now, after only three weeks. I have just myself to cook for now, but I so miss the cooking I used to do. I lived in my kitchen, and made up my recipes for my cookbooks. I’m still adding to them though. I miss being close to a market with a huge variety of foods available. I have to make do with what’s here, not very much but imagination can stretch a lot of things. I love your name; my first lilies are blooming as of the first of May. Beautiful deep orange red clusters among my tall purple irises, and the very first tiny bouquets of whisper pink antique tea roses are climbing the fence. I have a huge rosemary that I’m now working on cutting back to show off its gnarled, twisted trunk. It looks like it’s been wind-swept, sculpted by nature. It’s stayed in solid blooms since the below freezing months of January and February; a beautiful skirt of rich greens, strewn with tiny purple flowers. My very small patio area comes alive in the spring! Sorry, I tend to ’run on,’ lol! It’s so nice to meet you! Best regards to you and yours, Myra ~~~

"During the time of Julius Caesar the Living ECK Master was Ori Diogo, who lived quietly in Rome. He foretold the death of Caesar by the Ides of March. Few knew him, but he helped shape much of the world in those days for spiritual advancement.
He chose his work on the Astral plane where he has charge of healing for those who come across after death from some accident, disease, or other affliction.
Zadok followed Ori Diogo. He was living, at the time of his ECK Mastership, in the country of Judea, North of Jerusalem. His work was with a small group of followers who had broken with the Essenes, a Mystic order of the times. They grew in large numbers as a secret mystical organization which exists to this day in the middle East. They accept the Living ECK Master as the Mahanta, for through a secret inner communication channel they always keep in touch with the Master.
Zadok saw the man named Jesus, talked with Him on several occasions, and knew His purpose in this world. He also knew that their missions did not cross. Neither of them had any physical contact with each other after Jesus left the ECK group, with whom he studied for some time under the great Zadok. The ECK Master gave Jesus the basic fundamentals of ECKANKAR, who used them in His own teachings. Out of His knowledge of ECK came what we know today as Christianity."

In 1930, the ambassador of U.S Miles Poindexter wrote his book. The ancient Indians crossed the Pacific Ocean and came to South America. He showed the similarities between the QUICHUA language of South America and Sanskrit India. He described INCA ruler hymns and Vedic hymns as one, and he finally wrote the people of Maya and Inca civilization were undoubtedly Hindus. In the museum of Vedic hymns as one, and he finally wrote the people of Maya and Inca civilization were undoubtedly Hindus.

      ~
Its interesting to note that the biggest festival each year observed by the Incas was called the Rama-Sitva, which they have now disguised as the Inti Raymi. Sir William Jones, however, has preserved this historical fact in the following quote:
"Rama is represented as a descendant from the Sun, as the husband of Sita, and the son of a princess named Causelya. It is very remarkable that Peruvians, whose Incas boasted of the same descent, styled their greatest festival Rama-Sitva - hence we may take it that South America was peopled by the same race who imported into the farthest parts of Asia the rites and the fabulous history of Rama." It’s no coincidence that Peru is home to the oldest known civilizations in the Western Hemisphere, known as Caral. And the largest empire ever seen in the Western Hemisphere. It’s one of the most biodiverse countries in the world. The Amazon river ‘begins’ in Peru. The 3rd highest peak in the Western Hemisphere. Some of the driest deserts in the world. The richest fishing waters in the world.
Lots of crops we appreciate the world over originated in Peru , such as potatoes and peanuts. Also the tomato before it was fully domesticated.

¡Peru has the richest sea in all the Americas!
Based on Statista data quoted, the volume of global fish production has increased rapidly in the past nine years. In 2018, the volume of fish production reached 178.8 million tons, up 21 percent compared to 2010 which amounted to 148.1 million tons.
Here are five countries which produce the largest fish in the world, summarized by Indian Stuffs:
    1. China (58.8 million tons)
    2. India (9.46 million tons)
    3. Indonesia (6.10 million tons)
    4. Peru (6.00 million tons)
Peru has always occupied the top position in the world fisheries sector since 1960.
In general, Peru is endowed with large fish resources because it has a coastline of up to 3,000 kilometers in addition to 12 thousand lakes and lagoons with more than 50 species.
    5. USA (5.36 million tons)
The United States is a developed country that excels in various commodities, including fisheries. Uncle Sam's country has the largest aquatic zone in the world up to 11.4 million square meters.
This condition does not include the coastline on the east and west side which reaches 200 miles. Amid the decline in capture fish production, the US continues to encourage aquaculture to meet domestic and export needs.
