Thank you for showcasing and promoting Corvairs! That engine sounded amazingly healthy, not even clicking lifters after sitting so long. For anyone interested, Matt bought a 66 Monza with a 110 ho engine and a Powerglide. Part of driving any Corvair includes: spare parts, a 9/16" wrench (to change the fan belt), and a roll of paper towels (to act as your defroster). Glad Matt is not parting it out, as that would make a pretty decent daily driver- I hope Carter likes it! Absolutely great humor in this episode!

That later body style was, in my opinion, a great improvement. It drew a lot from the 1965 full body style. Interesting thing is that early Pontiac Tempests shared the transaxle from the Corvair. I had an RA at university in 1967 who had one of those Tempests and it was a rocket with it's "half a V8" engine.

My first car was a 1963 Corvair 4 door. Bought it when I was 15 in 1968 for $50, and my dad towed it home with me in the Corvair. I took apart the engine and put in new rings, and maybe valves. The floor was rusted out, so my dad taught me to use the cutting torch, and I cut off the sides of an old washing machine to get metal for the floor. Welded it in with and Oxy Acetylene welder, which is what my dad had. I then coated it with Epoxy. Repainted the outside of the car olive green, with the back painted with a paintbrush. After a year and a half, I broke a piston ring going 90 miles an hour. Produced so much blow-bye that I had to plug the dipstick hole to prevent oil from blowing over the engine. All in all, drove the car for two years or so, and sold it for $50. Seeing you put the plates on the floor bought back memories.

This '66 will definitely be a great daily driver! That's so awesome that all your boys have a Corvair now! I'm proud to be a part of the Corvair family. Corvairs have been in my family for four generations! My dad got his first Corvair in 1963, and has had one ever since! I'm in California for work, and I'm definitely homesick now and wanna play with my Corvairs! Matt I love that you are a true Corvair guy like me.....I love all Corvairs--early models, late models and forward controls (UltraVans too!)! If your FCs aren't in the Corvanatics Registry, you should add them! Thanks again for making videos with your Vairs! Some of the best memories of my life are cruising with my kids in one of our Corvairs!

Another crash the same day resulted in a Volvo having to be towed back to town from the RC Airfield. Matt, your original fuel pump was likely working just fine. Your problem was that you had too much restriction in your feed to the pump from those two fuel filters which are designed to be on the pressure side. Even when clean, those filters cause too much of a restriction for atmospheric pressure to force enough fuel through them. They make specific filters for the inlet side (AKA a suction strainer) which have a fine screen and a lot of surface area inside so as to not limit the flow. I have seen this happen even on riding mowers.

    • @mediocreman2

Cool another Corvair back on the road again and in Matt's fleet plus more memories. The second design handled like a Corvette if you had the right tires and air pressure. You had to run lower pressure in the front tires than recommended or they would push in the corners at higher speeds. I had a Turquoise 68 Sport Coupe with white interior. It was a powerglide and had factory air. The color and the a/c had to make it rare. I put cragars with 60's on it (8" wide on back) and it handled well enough to scare a few friends that thought that it would spin out on the next turn at the speed we were going, they were feeling around for the seat belt. It is one of those cars that I wish I had back now in the same shape it was in then. Your trip was another crazy adventure and Tomtom did an amazing job of bending on the roll cage while you were gone. When the XJ is done that will make 2 more old vehicles back on the road that were just sitting, cool.

7:47 The Rocket Motel! Great place to stay. Was there on vacation the week before Sturgis many years ago. Driving into South Dakota and my 8 year old daughter at the time, looking out the minivan window exclaims "What is this? A motorcycle convention!?"

You're correct Matt, all the best reasons to go on a road trip. Spending time with your son, Priceless, so another great video, it looked and sounded like fun, the parts we saw, lol your adventure motivated me to plan a road trip myself. I also want to say your analytical and mechanical skills have improved immensely or you just never showcased them before anyway more motivation. On your adventure video a 9.5, well...., correction actually you get a 10 because you did it with your son .
    So great job once again
    All right thanks for Sharon

Cool to see some fun flying content, I wonder Matt being in left seat, adding hours to his log book? (I have a PPL with low and high wing time) Johnny flying from the right side, I wonder if he is a or was CFI?
Always entertaining to watch Matt and crew at work!

You are brave. I would have worried about rear trailing arm bearings failing on a car that has been sitting outside for so long. I never lost a fanbelt on a Corvair, but always carried a clutch cable nd a spare rear 65 rear engine mount. A well tuned Corvair engine is a beautifully running thing and it remains my favorite car when it comes to the most pleasant manual steering.

My one regret in life will always be that I never had a kid to share in those types of experiences like I did with my Dad. We used to do the exact same thing. He also taught me so damn much. How to weld, roofing, carpentry, plumbing, electrical, engines, etc. Those were always the best experiences in my life.

I Bought mine sight unseen from a guy in Sacramento who was moving to Korea to teach English. Drove it well over 500mi home, and THEN it started smoldering once I parked it. Heater hose sagged and touched the exhaust...... drove it 9 years, tracking all maintenance expenses (including building a RAD engine for it), and sold it for a $1.34 profit. Yeah. Corvairs ROCK!

Funny about taping the front window out. When I was parting a couple of Corvairs years ago, when I went to remove the rear window, I went to use my wire tool but found the windows were just sitting in place and could be pushed out quite easily. I was more afraid you might lose the rear window while out of the road. That would have been exciting.

Loved this video. My firsr car was a 1966 Corvair Corsa Convertible with the Turbo Charger. Purchased in 1968. Joined the NAVY. Boot Camp at Great Lakes IL. Then Electronics Tech School there.Managed to get my Car from Jacksonville Fl. up there over Christmas leave. Then I was assigned to an Amphibious Ship in San Deigo. Left for a 9 month WestPac deployment. Viet Nam. Car was left at home in FL. Then I had to report imediately to Mare Island CA to begin Nuclear Power School. I had an Aunt and Uncle who lived in Palmdale CA. My parents drove my car across the Country to get it to me. I flew down to Palmdale. Took them to San Fran and we spent a few days there and they rode the Bus home to Jacksonville. Parents! What they would do for their Children!
