Wow, there is a bit of sadness to this. Some of us remember the Tangerine being Jaymes daily driver, and also going out on jobs before it had a lot of upgrades.
@AFloridaSon Remember the Episode when Matt didn't follow Casey and instead took a different, much more difficult route? With the still stock Tangerine, while Red was spotting her. That was an epic episode!
As an older guy I'm very pleased to watch this. Being older realize that this is an epic time for everyone involved with this build and they will have memories forever about this good time and working with Matt.

We must all remember that no good deed (like loaning your vehicle to someone) will go unpunished. But - making lemon aid from lemons is a sweet comeback! This is a fun, quick project!
Oddly, I can say that I helped my friend, Dave, build plywood doors for a CJ-5 as we fit a CJ-2 aftermarket hardtop to it. A mutual friend had totally wrecked his Jeep during the summer while the hardtop was in the garage, making that top available. The body tubs were about the same size and shape (IIRC... it's been about 45 years) but the CJ-5 had more windshield slope than the CJ-2, so the top extended past the windshield top leaving a large opening. We flattened out a piece of aluminum siding (it's what I recall we could find) and attached it to the bottom of the hardtop and the top of the windshield frame and trimmed it to fit. That made a a rather handy shelf space. Thus was born the "Duckbill Jeep" that was seen on central Illinois roads for several winters. 😊
I love the steel tubing you added and your explanation of a unified body. Another way of talking about this type of construction is to say its strength comes synergistically. When I worked in the Chevy Engineering test lab, they had the Vega (1970s) floor pan on a cart. It was sagging at both ends because it was sheet metal attached to nothing. Its strength came later when it was a complete assembly, hence synergistic strength.
I enjoy watching yall make fire and breath smoke, dust, dirt, grit & grime. Its what makes life fun....instead of hyperventilating and panic attacking over every little thing. Thanks
Being a fellow XJ fanatic this makes my heart hurt. Just seeing a nice rust free one get wrecked hurts but it being a rare one year color option, witch has been rumored to only been available for the last six months production of the xj stings even more. Glad to see they’re not just sending it to the crusher and it’s getting a second life.
As far as fireproofing goes, other than leather blankets, I use 1/4" Hardibacker board (it is non-combustible and used for tile installations). It also keeps heat away from combustible materials. It is available at Home Depot.

What a great use of the Tangerine! Fast and fun project for all! Don’t forget winch and recovery points all around. Rear hitch would come in handy too. Flag holder, cap the roof for strength and weather. Just put a simple wind and flying debris shield in that can be removed when wanted. A simple light package with rock lights etc.would come in handy. Great content for you channel and use of Jamie’s beloved Tangerine.
You forgot monocoque in your list of body types 😂😂 And what do you mean, Matt? "Final form" of the tangerine? Nothing of yours is ever in its final form.. there's always modifications happening! It's one of the things we all love about you guys and the channel. Keep up the great work guys!!
Don't use a Rolock abrasive disk on a die grinder to clean things like open diff's, engines, and there covers. The sluff that spins off will stick on the oil wet parts and become an abrasive in the fresh oil. I've witnessed an engine wiped out in 30 miles right after the oil pan gasket had been replaced. All the rods were hammering. Use a good clean edge scraper/knife.
Matt, since this is an open vehicle, you can probably go with a polycarbonate windshield, and chain link fence brackets to hold it in place to the DOM supports.
Peanut just sitting there wagging her tail tells me more about how they treat these dogs then anything they have ever said about that. Those border collies enjoy what they do, probably almost as much as border collies that are sheep dogs.
My late Father In Law had a beautiful 46 Jailbar hotrod. It's earliest iteration had it painted in matte Bellflower blue, with white 'seaweed' flames. It looked great, and was roadworthy, here in Australia. I was at a run with him at the time, and he was chatting with an old mate of his, telling him that he'd been rejected from several hot rod competitions because of the matte paint. "No unfinished cars" was the reason given. The old mate was aghast! "They said WHAT?" he said, "custom builds are never FINISHED!"

That looks amazing. Mat you can curve the bar that you want to run behind the from seat toward the middle beam. That way you can control if you want it to hit the front seat or not. I think you need that bar right there. You need the back seats because you alway have to remember you have to have somewhere for the camera crew to sit.
Matt lets be honest as the owner you are always on call. I can definitely see Katelynn being the first one to roll the modified vehicle. I think this was a great idea I will miss the Tangerine but this will be a new fun vehicle
Matt: "For what we do, we need to go light!" Also Matt: Has a real engineer at his disposal. *Also* Matt: Proceeds to have Rhett weld a metric crapton of mild steel to his rigs.
Those rear hatch lift assist cylinders can be repurposed to the hood and you can delete the prop rod, or leave it as a backup. Did it to mine with the old, worn out ones that wouldn't hold up that heavy, fiberglass hatch, anymore. Works great!
Can't say I'm not sad being that's the best color I've ever seen on an XJ, and a rust-free unit that's been a part of the channel at that. But I'm so glad to see this being repurposed rather than junked or parted and then compacted!
I love the way you just tear into things and just build it as you go. The eye-ball8ng of the windshield bars... I'd have measured that 15 times to get it right. Now i want to go cut the top off of something... I love it, can't wait to see how it all turns out.

I poured one out for the poor Tangerine. Seeing Jaime peer over the engine bay reminded me of a Mother looking over a sick child. ❤ What brand of wheels are on the Tangerine? I quite like them. Looks like those rear seats need to go back 6 freedom units.
Awesome 2-3 billed on the new buggy. Not sure why it takes some folks weeks and months (he said sarcastically). You should paint the outside "rattle can blue", put a giant alligator decal on it and go see Holly. I truly enjoy the whole family experience in your shop. However, except for some domestic stuff, sweeping up the broken back window. Jamie and Katlynn were just eye candy. Still a nice touch.
I'm interested to see more of that Corvair Monza Coupe at around 8:42 . Also, being a unibody, I'm impressed that removing the roof didn't cause the tangerine to sag......then again, a lot of the strength is in the floorpan box sections, etc....Loving the end result with the cage fitted. Re-use, don't throw away.
From what I know about unibodies, the primary purpose of the roof as far as the structure is concerned is to prevent the floor pan from snapping when it goes on three wheels or less
XJs are surprisingly easy to roll over. Fortunately, they tend to hold up pretty well if it happens. From the pictures and the damage it looks like they weren't going too fast, so hopefully nobody got hurt.
They kinda scare me. I recovered one once after it slipped on black ice and rolled. The roof was even with the top of the doors. I'm not even sure how the driver and passenger managed to make it out with no injuries. They must've been contortionists to crawl out of that thing.
I've rolled two, a '98 and a '96, survived both without a scratch. Both XJ's were totaled, at least insurance wise. I didn't have a garage at the time otherwise I would have bought them back.
Actually, they aren't at all easy to roll. Sure, they have a higher center or gravity than a Mustang or a Camaro, but as SUVs go they aren't at all easy to roll -- unless you drive like an idiot.
Much like convertible and targa vehicles. The floor has to carry the loads and flex torque. Multiple are stronger than single thickness strength. You had excellent explanation on this rebuild/restructure
12:28 My Father worked at UAW Plant when he was younger, he was on the local union executive committee too. So he wa well versed with safety procedures even back then. We were at a family event, just talking about work stuff and about welding fumes, he said *I* had an advantage over him and my two brothers (who all smoked cigarettes daily). I don't smoke and never had, his opinion was that was HUGE health advantage, when you think about cigarette smoke combined with welding fumes etc.
Mostly because monocoque is an entirely incorrect way to describe a unibody car. Monocoque is an old aircraft thing meaning "stressed skin", which a Jeep XJ most definitely is not, considering no body panels are structural.
@@jaredlancaster4137 The XJ Cherokee introduced for the 1984 model year was the first Jeep with a ladder-boxed chassis integrated into a single monocoque unit rather than the traditional separate body-on-frame This was copied directly from Google. Even Google disagrees with you.
@@WBatte1 if you remove the hood, fenders, doors, hatch, and core support from an xj, how structurally sound will it remain? 100%. An XJ is at best half stressed skin, and even then the structural floor pan gets most of its strength not from the skin but from the box sections of the frame rails and rockers. Likewise the roof skin does not contribute to the structure, only the roof rails around the edges. Hence sunroofs. Really the firewall is the only part of the unibody that contributes a whole lot of strength without having boxed tubes. And I hope you don't honestly believe that the Google summary of the Wikipedia page is the source of all engineering truth.
Ow man, I think i love this build the most of all!! Simple, sturdy, functional and not afraid to use it. I’lol tell you, this tange (no tangerine, the “ine” has been chopped off) if the best so far!
Out of all the videos, this one reminded me alot of how we did things back in the 80's. No fancy computers, no automatic machines. Just some hard work, eyeballing alot, and getting it done. Look forward to seeing the end product.
Dang Matt, With soooo many wise and learned viewers telling you what you're doing wrong , in each and every vid, you ought to be getting damn close to perfect ! I figure if YOU follow all of that sage advice You'll live forever !
I worked in a factory that had robots welding car parts, and breathing those zinc fumes for 15 months aged my face about four years and compromised my otherwise very healthy immune system. I'm 9 months out of that job and still dealing with a general unhealthiness that I never had before.
I feel for Jamie!! Ma'am I can see you are deeply affected! Matt as usual is not paying attention to safety and could have hurt himself and crew! Please be more careful!!! Love you all and God bless you!!!
@tubeentonces I like Makita but their drills are really junk, I wore one out in under 2 weeks. I have a little bit of everything because it depends on the tool for me which brand I prefer.
I admire the patience of you and your crew when it comes to calming the fears of all these backyard mechanics and know-it-alls telling you how to build your projects and how to be so safe while doing it. They drive me a bit crazy.
Aw man that's my favorite cherokee ever that sucks I think that's one of if not the rarest factory color for xj's and were only that color the last 6 months of production called amber fire pearl coat 😢
And this is work?? Matt, you, your guys and family have too much fun at "work". Your exploits building off road buggies takes me back 60 odd years of spending every spare minute that I wasn't in school with a few of my school buds cutting up old cars and converting them into "bush buggies". Memories of great fun times, total enjoyment.
i think you should add a pipe on each side from the back seat hoop, to somewhere in the rear structure, would help with the looks of it a lot. also putting the "tailgate" back on will deff help a lot in the looks department too.
Would love to see you guys get Derek Bieri of Vice Grip Garage for off road games. I seen in one of his video's that he started out building off road vehicles and off roading.
Well you just confirmed that I am watching far too many UA-cam videos if I recognize most of the characters in upcoming event. Love that Project Farm and Laura Farms are in the mix. If not too early would like to nominate LockPickingLawyer and Whistlindiesel as a tag team for 2025 as appears some interesting dynamics would be at play😊
Awesome video! By the way your "Free unit" or "Freedom Unit" are Imperial Unit belonging to the British people, the very people American people tried (and succeed) to get rid off during the American revolution. The metric system was created after the French revolution by the People for the People, to make calculation easier and to prevent the People to be cheated by the nobility. So technically, the metric system is the "Freedom unit".

You can tell Jamie is genuinely sad about the Tangerine. It was such a nice XJ in a unique color.
Wow, there is a bit of sadness to this. Some of us remember the Tangerine being Jaymes daily driver, and also going out on jobs before it had a lot of upgrades.

Such a waste, it could have been repaired and fixed with a replacement roof. Looking at the rockers being opened up, there was no rust. What a shame.
Sorry Who ?
That thing was so rust free-amazing floorboards-says the guy from Wisconsin.
I think the tangerine earned a new name [ the orange crush ] ! it will never be the same !

Cage needs to be painted tangerine, Even if you had to use factory belts, it's easy to weld and strengthen tabs onto it. Great job MORR crew!
That little dog loves you for good reason, you rescued her.
You can judge a mans heart by the way he treats animals...look at Mat and Peanut
It always makes me laugh when people complain he abuses his dogs by making them run in the desert. 😂
@@jilbertb If any of the complainers would actually watch the videos, they would see that the dogs actually ASK to be let out so they can RUN!
Gives off a bit of "Humvee Vibe" with the roofline.
peanut is such a sweetheart that wants to be loved all the time lol
I wonder how many times in that shop someone has said "Hey Matt! Something is on fire!!"
Didn't Tom Tom say that when they were all stuck at the bottom of the hill that the wrecker couldn't climb?
Yes lol
You did remember uni-body, unitized, unit construction and unit body. But you've completely forgotten about the monocoque side of the family.
And un
Mostly because monocoque is an entirely incorrect way to describe a unibody car. Monocoque is an old aircraft thing meaning "stressed skin", which a Jeep XJ most definitely is not, considering no body panels are structural.
@@jaredlancaster4137 if you remove the floor pan, firewall and roof from an XJ, how structurally sound will it remain?
@@jaredlancaster4137
The XJ Cherokee introduced for the 1984 model year was the first Jeep with a ladder-boxed chassis integrated into a single monocoque unit rather than the traditional separate body-on-frame
This was copied directly from Google.
That poor Jeep. It was clean too 😭💀
Ow man, I think i love this build the most of all!!
Rorys got a off-road buggy and Matt needs one too. Make lemonade out of lemons.
Orange juice out of tangerines 🍊
with the initial cutting i thought: there goes structural integrity! ....it has improved!
Dang Matt, With soooo many wise and learned viewers telling
you what you're doing wrong , in each and every vid, you ought to
be getting damn close to perfect ! I figure if YOU follow all of that sage advice
You'll live forever !
No doubt
He's masterful
Just a little polishing and ppe and he'll be invincible too
I'm guilty. I made a zink comment last week. I can't stop myself.
That turned out really good. Interesting that you switched from Makita to Milwaukee.
Sponsored free tools I'm sure
I noticed that too! I'm a Milwaukee guy so it makes me happy to see.
@tubeentonces I like Makita but their drills are really junk, I wore one out in under 2 weeks. I have a little bit of everything because it depends on the tool for me which brand I prefer.
As an expert in absolutely nothing, I love what you do. Thank you for all the fun adventures
I admire the patience of you and your crew when it comes to calming the fears of all these backyard mechanics and know-it-alls telling you how to build your projects and how to be so safe while doing it. They drive me a bit crazy.
The "Safety Police" drive me crazy .....
Seeing Matt with power tools is truly terrifying!
Agreed 💯 savage 😂
Sigh. Yeah.
A moment of silence for the old Tangerine...
As another Colin I felt that wiper slap personally! I still wanna get pats with peanut and lady though.
i think you should add a pipe on each side from the back seat hoop, to somewhere in the rear structure, would help with the looks of it a lot. also putting the "tailgate" back on will deff help a lot in the looks department too.
Peanut sitting in the driver's seat at 17:40 is hilarious. She's like. "Let's GOOOOOOOO!"
Would love to see you guys get Derek Bieri of Vice Grip Garage for off road games. I seen in one of his video's that he started out building off road vehicles and off roading.
What video is that?

Well you just confirmed that I am watching far too many UA-cam videos if I recognize most of the characters in upcoming event. Love that Project Farm and Laura Farms are in the mix. If not too early would like to nominate LockPickingLawyer and Whistlindiesel as a tag team for 2025 as appears some interesting dynamics would be at play😊
Yeah I’d love to meet Todd at Project Farm.
Breathing fumes in the shop is probably healthier than consuming a “Victory Pie”😂
Rough to see that it rolled over, pleased to see a project coming from it. Keep up the good work crew!
Who'd you loan it to? 😂 3:34
Doughnut Media? 🥯
Just a guess, no idea really....
IIRC, Tom-Tom's son borrowed it a few months ago.
Peanut’s tail just keeps moving!.Great video.
From Jamie's daily driver to a fun "buggy" for every day fun. 😂
Y'all have so much fun in the shop and what y'all do out on the trail. It's Fun to watch. And puts a smile on my face.
