So where is the big granite slab you had to traverse and it was so steep the uphill wheels would almost "float" off the slab so you had to take it real slow... lots of vehicle used to roll there and it was a long ways down.... did they close that section?

Well done. You opted for a scenic tour away from the beaten path to V city, toured the historic main drag there, spontaneously aided a stranded tourist, and were pleasantly redirected to a historical steam engine exhibit (authentic American history). That's a complete vacation experience. Maybe that's part of what makes your podcast so compelling. It's so refreshing in a world full of flakes and phonies (thanks hollywierd) to see real people with whatever foibles or flaws they may have doing real things encountering some of the joys as well as challenges shown for all to see rather than being galvanized in approved narrative as everything is today, forcing 'herd think' on the part of the viewers. Your lifestyles provide hope and a boost of morale to the work hard play hard types of which the country's backbone is comprised. Btw Matt, nice touch on the impromptu welding heat barrier invention. Looks like your innovative skills gleaned some safety in an area where fires are a primary concern.

A simple google search for "driving across nullabor petrol stations" will bring up a whole host of travel guides saying something along the lines of “You should never drive past a petrol station on the Nullarbor unless you know how far the next one is and you are sure that you can make it. Petrol stations are generally 200kms apart, but you should check this on the Fuel Map App to ensure you don't leave yourself stranded.”

Great video, guys. Love the Morvair! When I was a kid, I built a 1953 GMC P/U 4x4 conversion.
I worked for an off road shop, so had access to a lot of goodies. Shortened a long bed sectioned the frame, bed etc. Made a nice compact rig.
Power was a Chevy 250 CI 6, RV cam, and Clifford Research headers and dual exhaust. Power was good, for a truck that light. Lots of great memories going into situations we had no business getting into. Always got in, always got out.

As someone who grew up where it got to -20~-30F on occasion, I thought it was funny, too. But then realized he lives in constant heat. I'd absolutely die dealing with that every day and be a grumpy monster due to it. He deals with it with no issues whatsoever (that he lets on, anyway). I've got a relative in the desert of SoCal gets cold and wears a sweater at 80F. Me? T-shirt and shorts and feeling hot in the desert heat (even at 80). So... it's what we're used to. Thinking about that made me appreciate Matt even trying that much more because he was probably pushing his physiological (psychological?) limits more than I would've been had I been there.

My 87 Tercel 4wd had about 40 hp. Impossible to start below freezing. About 3 inches of wet snow and the Extra Low gear would barely pull you through. I had the clutch cable break and drove it for a while until the part came in. Warm up the engine in neutral (critical!), shut down, shift into 1st and start the engine in gear. A bit of rev matching and all was good.

I am continually amazed by the level of skill that goes into your recovery work, and also 4-wheeling skill, as exemplified in this video.
I'm a contented 2-wheel drive-r and after getting stuck in sand a few times on my adventures, I now tend to back out of dirt roads real quick if they get the slightest bit sketchy. I am happy on heavily traveled, highly maintained dirt roads. At the same time, I'm aware that even if I had the 4-wheeling skill and the rig to try to tackle rough roads, I would not have the interest in this, because to me it seems like a lot of work, stopping, figuring out how you're going to negotiate a tricky stretch, picking a line, perhaps failing a few times and quite possibly sustaining some damage to the vehicle in the attempt. That's not what I want to be doing on vacation. I'd much rather park my vehicle near the blacktop, and get out and go for a long hike, which would not require any of this mental work, and would feel physically exhilarating in a way that I couldn't obtain by driving.
But I do certainly see the attraction of putting your 4-wheeling, mechanical maneuvering and other mental skills and extensive vehicle knowledge to task with your recovery efforts, because you get to do work that is also fun in the outdoors. Hard to beat that!!
