Paul Gilbert is the Jeff Goldblum of guitar playing.
Oh Lord!...lollololol
Talk about Sacrrified 😎
More like the David Letterman in my mind.
LIFE IN ART Ahhh... The plot thickens.
Both are from Pittsburgh/the Pittsburgh area, and both are 6'4 sooooo lol
I've never seen Paul Gilbert do a bad interview. Seems like the coolest dude
=ua-cam.com/video/8IlLaj1-1-0/v-deo.html
I wish I could be in half of Paul Gilbert's good mood, half the time.
imo, he's the anti-cool, but unabashedly so, kind of like a dad. But he's wicked at guitar and a nice guy, which makes him cool.
rEALLY!! GREAT dUDE!!!
I could hear Paul talk or play for hours and be equally entertained! His banter with Josh is so good!
In all seriousness.. Paul, when I was a kid I had no one, nothing but my guitar.i moved around constantly,no father and a very angry mother.Intense Rock came out and I felt like I had a teacher and a friend.this VHS would play constantly to drown out the fighting as you taught me all the cool 3 note per string exercises, arpeggios etc..I'm 46 now and thank you for being the guy you were and still are.out of all the influences I had you by far stand above the rest and had a huge impact on the path I chose..thanks
Very inspirational story. I’m sorry you had to go through such trauma as a child. I hope that you feel some peace today.
That’s awesome. Paul’s great!
So...how's prison then? Just kidding. Our stories are similar. Happy to find that you've found happiness through all that.
You're here for all the perfectly screwed and thusly rock reasons of perfection. Cheers!
Sorry you went through such difficult times bro. Glad to hear good PG was a comfort, hope you are well 👍 🙏
I laughed out loud when Andy Martin appeared out of the blue as “the Ref.” Well done.
Paul Gilbert and Greg Koch have to have the greatest combination of chops and sense of humor.
They’re so similar, they could be related like cousins or something
Very different style chops but just as amazing.
And yet, if you'd put them together in the same band, you'd end up with a band without fans. They'd all laugh them selves to death on the conversations between the songs
Add Adam D from Killswitch Engage and it's a trifecta!
Don't forget Devin Townsend
This is one of the greatest videos I've ever watched.
TRUTH
Duck Yea!! Dang it, autocorrect
"Careful with perms"
Pure fun!! Great video!
You're one of the greatest videos I've ever watched 🫔👍
This is likely the best JSH Show episode I've seen. The basketball portion just kills it!
paul, andy, basketball, van halen cover, funny people at jhs. best show.
Paul Gilbert's shirt: Paul Gilbert Can't Shred
Paul Gilbert within 20 seconds of the video starting: shreds
3 minutes in: *drills*
We need more Paul Gilbert in our world.
I feel stupid. Im 10 mins in and i don't see a cat
@@coreyw5981 Best comment
Amazing player and seems like a really cool human being
The t-shirt selection was strong on this one.
ua-cam.com/video/8IlLaj1-1-0/v-deo.html
😂👍🏻🤘🏻
I was waiting for someone to say it
Smirked at the Gilbert and JHS shirts, but "Drums Suck" was the coup de grace.
@@nealwp2 : Did anyone notice Andy's shirt? I think it was "Demo guys suck". Sorry, but THAT's the coup de grace here! :)
OMFG - PG doing Michael McDonald....was possibly the best thing of 2020 - good lord that was good hahaha. Like seriously
Do you know what’s the name of that song?
@@alvaro6574 What a Fool Believes by The Doobie Brothers
@@RasCricketSmallAxe Thanks!
Definitely unexpected hah.
I fucking loved it!!!
Man, imagine being able to say “I jammed with Paul Gilbert at his house.”
Paul Gilbert has officially evolved to give off full dad vibes
The Andy cameo was like Wolverine in a Marvel movie.
Igor Crous
Snikt!
Dude. His shirt in the jam had me crying.
That’s the guy from the Reverb videos? I wonder how he got hooked up with them.
Wolverine is Marvel Comics…
@@Gitfiddle Fox owned the movie rights
12:48 - "Argument about pie" first record
When I heard it the other day I thought of this video and sang in Paul’s high voice 😂
Im 64 years old and I never heard of paul gilbert until I went to check out a overdrive pedal by jhs...He's great man, and down to earth....then I went and watched his wonderful Beatles medley....so good.
Saw him live in Glasgow supporting Joe Satriani a few years ago I've been playing for over 40 years and considered myself pretty decent but I left the gig knowing I'm really not very good
@@tomthumb4325 I understand my brother, it's all about how much we play our guitar and weather or not, like some people,we are given the gift at birth where it comes easy and natural to excell at our art...and how much drive we had throughout life to work at getting to that place we want to get...i never had that drive to push myself to excell at anything, just the way it is..Maybe too many drugs at too young of age...Now shut up and go play your guitar...Peace.
I found out about him in Guitar magazines, Racer X sold their albums in guitar mags. His speed was amazing, grunge happened, Mr Big sank...and this ace guitarist basically got dismissed because he wasn't emotional enough, he also thought there was more to it than sheer speed. So he kinda relearned how to play. Arguably one of the best pure players ever.
"Reverb Andy" for CAMEO GOLD! 27:15
Conspiracy theory: Maybe he's getting a sig pedal too and it'll be revealed in a future episode 🤔
25:47
He's not doing a good job in breaking up the fight though
If Andy gets a signature pedal, who's going to review it?
@@murraymcleod7605 God
Sheesh, pedal records very well! It’s just like it sounded in the room 👍🏻
Thanks for having me over!
Dude! Thanks for dropping by!!!
Andy you kick ass!!!!!
We love you andy
So ref..who won the game?
Even without a pick? Sheesh is right!
He would be the best kids' music teacher you could hope for. His giddy enthusiasm is infectious and compelling - thank you, PG!
If you had told me this video ended with a montage of Paul Gilbert and Josh brawling on a basketball court while Andy tries to break it up in slow motion while Paul shreds a cover of Running with the Devil over it, I would have watched it 10 months ago.
Starring:
Andy Martin - himself
Filipe Pacheco I did a double take ! Andy Martin as the referee 😝
I know Andy lives in Portland and Paul does too, so.....
That came outta nowhere...
Filipe Pacheco I wondered if that was him!
I need that song about pie to be a real thing. But it has to be 3 minutes and 14 seconds,
I went straight on to Amazon Music hoping he'd really done a Pie song. Alas no.
Damn me too. Great melody.
I've been singing it for weeks...
Next album, Werewolves Of Portland.
That’d be some math rock shit
Man, I loved this episode. Paul is such a humble guy. And that version of Running with the Devil is awesome. It gave me goosebumps.
Totally agree. I could almost hear the words from the guitar. He nailed that vocal line.
Just amazing.
Great to hear the riff from green tinted sixties mind too. Took me back to the summer between school and Uni.
Luv and Peace.
14:33, love Paul's take on Numan!
Paul Gilbert, in addition to be a jaw dropping player, has one of the friendliest personalities of any musician I've ever seen. I just want to hang out with him! While he shreds my face off.
did a meet and great/vip/lesson deal bout 10/11 years back he was the coolest guy exactly like you see on camera - did 2 jams with the group and was an extremely sympathetic player to jam with - hes in my top 3 fave players ever
His fat cat can shred your face off! Haha! But hell yeah! Wanna hangout with PG too!
Why is Paul wearing safety glasses playing the guitar?
Because he is a shredder...
gotta protect your eyes from all those insanity flying off
Because he's blinding fast
Because of the drill
Well he's also kinda chipper.
All power, no tool!
This guy is an insane player. His brain fires even faster than his hands. Great pedal.
Paul is one of those players that makes me want to pick my guitar up, yet set it on fire. He just makes it all look so easy.
Jimi would approve of this
Paul Gilbert improvising that song about pie on the spot changed my life.
He just release the official version 😁
Wasn’t improvised
Ik this foreshadowed his new song on the new record
I love how Andy just randomly showed up as a ref. I about fell out of my chair. You guys are goofy.
Paul Gilbert's shirt: "Paul Gilbert can't shred"
Andyi's shirt: "Demo guys suck"
Drummer's shirt: "Drums suck"
Josh's shirt: "JHS Pedal suck"
nice lol
Could haven swore that was Andy from Pro guitar shop. The shirt removed all doubts, lol
@@DarthEcoli He's with Reverb now though
I love the way Paul can slip the slide on and off so effortlessly at 27:31
What the hell... That was like a magic trick
@@adriatic.vineyards He has magnets on the guitar
@@jimjimx5418 yeah I realize that, it's still impressive how smooth the motion is though
@@adriatic.vineyards Very impressive, and effortless...
I’m just frustrated I don’t know what Andy’s clean tone sounds like for this video.
Hahahah
@@a508 hahaha that was just what I thought
@@justinbowlin8723 x3 as srxww._-i
"You Can Never Get On An Argument About Pie" is my new favorite song
Kind of sounds like a Harry Nilsson song. :-)
That was amazing.
I honestly wanna hear Paul Gilbert make an album of Beatlesque pop songs about dumb shit.
@@creamydistortion I was thinking Shel Silverstein's "Ever Since my Masochistic Baby left me, I have nothing to beat but the walls" lol
27:34 such a killer line - sounds amazing
13:26 As someone who is gluten intolerant, I really appreciate the shout out from Paul.
Also, Paul seriously underestimated his 80s perm. I non-ironically think he rocked the 80s perm!
Also the way he just taps out Green Tinted Sixties Mind in the middle of a conversation and it still sounds absolutely effortless.
10 years of pedal demos on you tube has finally culminated with this epic masterpiece. Instant. Classic.
There needs to be a second interview. He's inspiring.
Agree. Paul Gilbert is always entertaining as a player and as an interviewee. Really funny guy and definitely knows his stuff.
Just imagine walking through your park and seeing Paul and Josh shooting a game of basketball. What a cool planet to be on.
Paul Gilbert is so awesome. Tremendous player, amazing songwriter, and (contrary to his own comments) a great singer. His early solo albums that had vocals are the best. Alligator Farm, Flying Dog, Burning Organ...pure gold.
Guessing by Josh's interview style here, these two must've had a hilarious email/phone exchange before this.
Leave it to JHS to recommend another company’s pedal while debuting his own! Strong community and love of great sounds!
Also, amazing content!
They all pimp each others pedals. Watch a Wampler video, he always is demoing other people's pedals. He will stick one of his own in there to make a point of how a circuit is different or how a pot can shape a sound, but for the most part all these guys are just plain 'ol pedal freaks, regardless of who's it is. I watched Keeley talk about a JHS pedal. Crazy
@@valuedhumanoid6574 that's wild cause I remember in one video Josh saying Robert Kelley was one of the reasons he even started building
00UncommonSense00 totally! I just hadn’t seen it while debuting a pedal before.
Maxon Mendel so cool to see these communities!
14:50 y'all playing Tubeway Army ?? hell yes
Paul Gilbert very humble guitar legend ever..❤️❤️🎸
Referee Andy’s first rule: NO PICKS.
JHS and PG?! Well, sunset the company and channel. You cannot top this, so "better to burn out than fade away". Seriously, thank you thank you thank you - cheers! Edit: HOLD EVERYTHING! You have Mr. Andy Martin as the ref? Geez, it isn't even my birthday.
Can't believe he mentioned 'Martha My Dear' by the Beatles. That song is a work of genius with stunning classical chord movement worthy of Mozart in truth. Paul McCartney wrote it about his dog Martha. You can play it on guitar with chords and/or fingerstyle if you are well trained in classical guitar. It is one of the most beautiful songs The Beatles did...if fact most Beatles songs are the most beautiful ever written so It's no wonder Paul is a Beatles fan...lol.
Josh playing the bass and letting Paul do his thing is the ultimate humility and why he's amazing
You have to go out more.
Maybe the best guitar tone was the friends we made along the way.
Kirk Phillips brilliant 👌😎
Deej
I'm proud to say I've had a private lesson with this man and it made very little difference to my shred god status, but did confirm that he really is this cool.
I am amazed by how Paul's playing has evolved over the years, stepping out of his comfort zone so many times
This man played "God dammit baby you know I ain't lying to ya I'm only gon' tell you one tiiiiiiiiiiiiiimeee!" and "Oh god, oh god I'm runnin'ahhhh" with a slide.
Timestamp
Andy Martin cameo ftw.
One of the coolest versions of Running with the Devil I've ever heard..
Bill x Paul’s ear at nailing the DLR vocal nuances with the slide, and THEN throwing in the Eddie flourishes on top, really made me smile. Plus, Andy is a great rhythm guitarist.
Paul GIlbert playing Diamond Dave's vocal absurdity and mixing in EVH's guitar lines was incredible.
I love Paul so much. Shredding on Tomorrow Never Knows wtf. "My fingers are getting cold." Paleontology.
If this was a pilot for a TV series, I would have already pre-ordered posters and the box set. This was so cool I can't even
That MIchael McDonald rendition. one of the best UA-cam moments ever for me.
Which song is it? I always forget the title...
What a Fool Believes, figured it out lol
PG has been my favorite since I was a kid. Now, even almost 20 years on, this interview makes me like him more! Great guys, nice pedal and cute shirts!
Not sure if there is anything cooler than watching Paul and Josh talk shop, play basketball and jam VH. So much of what makes musical endeavors fun. Rock on!
The only thing that would make it cooler is if Andy Martin showed up and joined them. Wait a minute ...
"when I was a kid" ---- who are you kidding paul , you're still a kid !!! we love you !!
The t-shirts in this video are simply the best.
Absolutely stellar interview!
This is soooo good. Thanks for keeping it light.
I never thought I'd see Paul Gilbert do an impression of Michael McDonald. That was pretty awesome.
Now I want a full cover of Paul doing "What a Fool Believes," with his own vocals.
The dude with the glasses plays really good
Love this guy man. So down to earth. Friendly and humble. Awesome player who appreciates all styles.
Paul Gilbert covering Michael McDonald/Doobie Brothers was the highlight of my day.
I just THOROUGHLY enjoyed every bit of this, and kudos to the “guest referee”, mind blown!!!
This was one of the most satisfying interviews I have seen featuring my guitar idol. That pedal will be mine...oh yes...it will be mine.
Awesome video! And awesome appearance by Andy Martin!
This is the greatest thing I have ever seen!!! LOVE YOU GUYS! Spreading music, talent and happiness is so rare these days. Thank you!
Paul Gilbert turned into Steve Albini so slowly I never noticed.
If “Pie Song” isn’t on Paul’s next album, I’m gonna be pissed!
1080kk save it for a Mr. Big reunion album. Eric Martin would kill it.
The best interview I've seen.
I love that jhs is showcasing these up and coming guitarists
Not sure if anyone remembers when Paul was on a guitar-themed game show in Japan with Marty Friedman years ago, with all kinds of "name that riff" type of challenges, and I've always thought it would be an amazing idea to bring that over to the rest of the world, and funny enough I think I just finally realized who the main host could be.... ahem...back to you Josh.
Maltozombie God I was living there when I watched that for the first time. I was flabbergasted when I saw it and flabbergasted that Marty is fluent in Japanese.
Its called Rock Fujiyama
His cat seems so bored with the whole situation. LOL!
One of the best blog ever! Good job, J.H.S.
Probably one of the very best guitar videos ever on UA-cam. Not only a great interview between Paul and Josh, but then some Running with the Devil inspired basketball to finish with Andy. It doesn’t get much more awesome than that. Thanks guys
"They're awesome conversation starters."
---
"Whoa, does JHS know someone's making shirts that say their pedals suck?"
"Yeah, it's JHS that makes this shirt."
"Oh, okay."
“careful with perms”...🤣
This is an outstanding interview! The guy asking the questions is great! Paul, is such a down to earth guy. It would be great to meet him and talk about life.
Loved this so much! Best, Daniel 🙌🏼
My fingers are getting cold. Now there’s a T-shirt.
So did no one notice his reference to his song "Get Out Of My Yard" in the beginning?
I HEARD IT!! I was literally like "HE SAID IT!!"
The Curse of Castle Dragon
And "you kids" too since it's a song on that record also.
I was waiting for that psychotic run that starts the album.
Time to spin that dude up.
The end was insanely great! I very rarely have commented anything on UA-cam but this was super awesome! Thank you for this!
I watch this vid over again every few months and it keeps upping its level of entertainment each subsequent time.
27:32 smooth move pulling that slide off! Magnets are magic
PAUL
Great show dude
Wow! I really think that was the best gear video I have ever seen. Josh should host the news. His interview skills are what the world needs. Oh and a whole lot more pie!
14:34 Gary Numan Awesomeness 🤘
Are “Friends” Electric?
I’ve always like Paul Gilbert. He just got promoted.
Paul’s “David Lee Roth” impression is spot on.
totally agree , and peopel say DLR cant sing ! all those little nuances and so high energy, he rocks !
Batsinthebelltower
Most people who say that are speaking about his live vocals.
Depending on the song, his vocals went from decent to excellent, up until about 1982. He was having trouble with many of the songs after that.
He would usually make up for a bad vocal night by doing extra gymnastics, jump kicks, and his spoken word stuff.
I’ve seen them twice with Roth, and he wasn’t at top form, but at one of the shows it was Eddie who was off, or just phoning it in, and that was much worse than Roth having a bad night.
You sir, should be a national treasure. Fantastic video. You've found your calling as evidenced with this collaboration with Paul, he's a top notch fellow as well. Keep up the great work as this is one of my favorite youtube channels. Been catching up on so many episodes, so glad I found it. Who needs Netflix anyway?
I haven't seen Paul Gilbert since he was running a cordless drill in Mr.Big. This video was an absolute joy to watch. Thank you!
PG always comes out of interviews as a damn smart funny down to earth guy. I wouldn't want to have a beer with most other guitar superstars, but I would with Paul!
Ditto!
The hot dog thing was such a Seinfeld type question lol
Yeah, IO haft say, I never really ponder those kinds of questions. Is food, is good !!:)
That was a really good interview. I like PG, and now I like him more.
What a fun and informative video. Gotta love how Josh will often talk up other manufacturers' pedals he likes or that would be of interest to others, even in a promo for one of his own. Class act.
