Josh's Pedal Board (with Paul Gilbert)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 12 бер 2020
- Today I'm showing my pedal board and how I use all the pedals that are on said pedal board. The board contains pedals that I use and the pedals are the board that I use. It's complicated stuff. Thanks to Sweetwater for having me and Paul Gilbert! Tell me what you think about my board in the comments!

If Paul Gilbert wasn't a guitar god I bet he'd be a great pediatrician.
Chemistry teacher.
he is a little letterman too
Michael, I totally got Dave from that too...
I'm straight up laughing out loud alone in a room at this
Yes! A pediatrician😁.......ya nailed it👍
"How fast can you do that?" Not a question I want Paul Gilbert to ask me ever.
"Not as fast as you, Sensai."
he gonna yank out a cordless drill with picks attached on it
@christopher weise There's always one... sheesh.
@christopher weise what?
I thought that was funny, then when he asked how slow can you do it I started dying laughing.
We need a sitcom with just Josh and Paul talking about everything.
YES!!!
A show about nothing?
These two are just fantastic together, it's really something
I would watch only that for the rest of my life
@@asutin56 they could call it "The Seinfeld Podcast."
I absolutely love Paul's 'technical' questions on Josh's effects choices.. 'How fast can you do that', 'what is that feeling', 'where does that come from'. Kinda reinforces that these electronic devices are there to make music and release emotions from you. Wonderful.
Paul is just there to handle all technical difficulties 😉
Well said
Hands down favorite is _"Do JHS pedals sound better when they're upside down?"_
He's gotta be a blast to hang out with.
Paul is either the best interviewer ever or the worst interviewer ever, this is just brilliantly wonderful.
well..... nothing Paul said was funny to me, but Josh is brilliant, and went right over his head. I guess he needed a straight man.
Miro Svetinsky Couldn’t agree more. Paul is like to lure Josh’s jokes out.
Haha, that was funny...
666 like to a wonderful comment
I think Paul is really uncomfortable without a guitar in his hands.
paul gilbert is like if jeff goldblum was a guitar legend.
Neon Thunderbird I enjoyed his last jazz album
nurvsy this comment could not be more true😂
It’s the glasses. Those Jeff Goldblum signature glasses.
Lol paul should play a scientist in the next jurassic park
Spot on!
"It doesn't matter if I've heard of them, they're still there" is a really humble and gracious thing to say. I like that guy.
Very Zen.
My favorite line of the video!
@@Zlagie same here
Absolutely right
Yep. That was a perfect response.
Paul is such a cool, down to earth guy. He could be chilling with a beginner guitar player and would genuinely react as if the person was the most amazing guitarist he has ever seen. The music world needs more people like him.
Will Castillo I guess he just accepted that everyone it calling him a god, so he doesn’t have to show off and is just happy every time he meets someone who shares his passion.
But Josh is no slouch
Agreed
@Jonathan Jackson hell yeah Josh can play! I was impressed. He always sounds great in the jams they made for the show but this was very impressive
Paul is always so positive about guitar playing. No matter what your sound is he finds a good thing in it to focus on. That is probably why he is such a good teacher. he doesn't make you play like somebody else. He encourages you to find "you" in your playing. But, don't be fooled, Paul is as good a guitar player as anybody.
He has those monster spider hands. God, what I wouldn't give to have monster spider hands!
Mmm, Paul Gilbert is easily Top 10 Guitar masters alive today!
Absolutely!! One thing that's bothered me throughout life is that every music teacher I've met tried to teach me how to sound like them. I'm an English teacher and I try to let my students speak in their own way. I guess music is obviously more ego infested, so it's not everyday you meet a teacher with Paul Gilbert's attitude...
"Paul is as good a guitar player as anybody". What do you mean with that? Cuz I know a lot of Guitar players and nobody is as good as him
This is as good a summary of PG as I’ve ever read
-I play primarily jazzmasters.
-Are you a master of jazz?
-No....
I died. 😆
Paul Gilbert is the best!
Hahahaha ~~~
@Bill Mccloy Frank Potenza fresh out of Berklee, before he was Joe Pass Junior, but always a Bopper.
Mr. Gilbert really nailed it
@Bill Mccloy That's true which is funny 'cause it was actually designed to be a Jazz Guitar.
Guess the Jazz players didn't agree :)
I’m not a fan of Paul Gilbert’s music, but I’m a huge fan of Paul Gilbert. Does that make sense?
Totalmente. Totally
Yeah, I know what you mean
Andrew Pappas
Is Pappas a fairly common name? In Houston there is a Pappas family in the restaurant business. Seafood, BBQ, Mexican , etc. they’re all good but noisy but most restaurants everywhere are too noisy. I went to high school with the Pappas brothers, Chris and Sewel, might be misspelling Sewel’s name. Year’s later one of them died in a car wreck I believe.
Rick Lewis The full version of my last name is Pappastathis, and it’s fairly common in Greece to have your last name end in -stathis or -opoulos. So I guess my last name is kind of common in a way
Kinda A LOT
This is a gem. Paul is such a sweet guy. Absolutely buries his ego for the sake of helping the viewer learn about Josh.
Paul is brilliant as an interviewer - he's enthusiastic, clever and funny and asks all the right questions and keeps the ball rolling - just wish he had a Guitar Equipment channel, it would be a ball to watch that.
Seconded
But more importantly- he listens. Can you imagine any other shred master doing this? They would have grabbed the guitar within the first 3 minutes, or lost interest because they consider themselves a superior guitarist
Nah he kept asking wierd questions. Really hard to follow sometimes. Cool guy tho ig🤷🏾♂️
He does have a channel!
Nah just kidding I have no idea.
@@cooperhamilton6141 Right. He kept interrupting, trying hard to be funny instead of talking about the board, he was pretty obnoxious
“If I flip that pedal around, it’s over, they don’t play guitar” 😂😂
Eli Ramirez, "I don’t want blood on my hands..."
That Ellipsis Guy, too good 😂
Paul and Josh is the NPR guitar radio show, that we didn't know we NEEDED.
@Regular Joseph and NPR is bullshit political propaganda these days. Not even listenable anymore
@@abaker2921 what a dumb comment
NPR needs to be eradicated
“You need to call home and talk to your Grandparents” to describe a reverb effect...Awesome...🤣🤣🤣
Awesome
It would have been hilarious if Josh was a straight to amp player.
Great video.
It is weird seeing him play a Marshall though.
@@yargnad is that a Plexi or a JTM45?
@@jierdy Plexi
Then they would discuss cable choices for half an hour.
What I love about Paul interviewing is that with each different sound he asks where it will be used and what emotion it conjures, so many times guitarists make tones for the sake of having access to them but dont know stylistically or artistically where they fit in the context of writing or playing music. It's a unique approach that more players should consider IMO.
Exactly. I've seen various posts on board forums of "I've got these pedals now, what pedal type shall I buy next?". Which leaves me just thinking dude, none. What do you think this is just a collection and show-off forum? I've never asked anyone what type of pedal I should buy like it's collecting stuff for the sake of it. Sure I've got lots of pedals but I always wanted them before I bought them, and saved or spent money I shouldn't have, never just for the sake of it. You don't need to buy any pedals unless there's a sound in your head or a texture you're trying to achieve you currently can't.
"How slow can you do it?" 🤣 Paul Gilbert is a treasure.
I feel like I'm watching the detective. 😆
Flipping pedals upside down part...how did they keep a straight face is beyond me.
Loved the whole thing. Paul is
The Morning Glory: "I want it to sound a little worse... it's too good."
It’s too glorious
I laughed out loud at this...!
That was too good! How good is the banter between these guys. So funny :)
hahahaha I'm crying.
I love that Paul is always having fun no matter what hes doing. Big smile on his face
On everyone's face
I want a show of just Paul Gilbert hanging with people doing stuff they like and he talks with them about it.
Gilbert has got a real David Letterman vibe going on here.
I walked away from the screen and I swore Paul's voice was Letterman. Wonder if that was intentional on Paul's part. It was kinda spooky.
I love the fact that Paul and Josh are friends. Paul, 80's hair metal butt rocker, and Josh, 90's kid shoegazer. They're like the odd couple, but awesome in their similarities of passion for the craft.
I'd never heard of Paul, but this video made me an instant fan
There's something about Josh and Paul, they'd be a fabulous youtube duo! it's just youtube gold and endlessly entertaining!
A UA-cam series or show with just them would be pure bliss
And he doesn't break character.
sometimes we forget how good josh is at guitar
"I also heard the first two notes to 2112" Haha, I almost fell out of my chair!
It's been fun watching Paul Gilbert evolve over the years. "Professor mode" is really cool. Great interview!
Kind of like the hulk.... he’s professor Gilbert now, but when he wants to, Gilbert Smash!
Josh kind of interviewing himself in this one. Haha. Paul is still too much fun to watch though
I was just thinking this is the same person interviewing a parallel universe version of them. Not sure if Josh is interviewing Josh v1.3 or Paul interviewing Paul v2.07...
Aaron Goldberg I think it’s Paul’s rig and they’re pretending it’s josh’s
Jazzmasters were always the "Elvis Costello Guitar" to me too, but at some point morphed into the J. Mascis / Kevin Shields guitars :)
Josh, you should do some kind of Shoegaze episode !!!
joe kimberlin 100%! We need a shoegaze video from Josh!!
Hell yes, a Shoegaze episode would be amazing! Someone on the Patreon bug him to do it, haha! 😆
I immediately think Lee Ranaldo
Just hand the guitar over- Paul is dressed like 70s Costello! 👓
Hell yeah, J Mascis is def my jazzmaster god!
"Getting older... Priorities" I nearly fell off my chair laughing. These two need a regular show together.
There was some real comedy gold there. I nearly fell off my chair with the upside down pedal thing. Paul's a great straight man.
The brilliance is that this is a completely normal interview *if* someone who only had intermediate guitar knowledge conducted it. Instead, it's *PAUL GILBERT* going, "what are those switches" and "I haven't tried the vibrato mode, I'm curious how you do this." LOLOL
Mr Big was one of my first concerts.
Spokane Washington. Just a few weeks before ”to be with you” came out. I was just a kid.
Gilbert and Sheehan blew my mind and at that moment I knew I’d be a musician for the rest of my life.
Now I’m still playing and broke. Lol.
Also saw Mr Big open for Rush before their big hit.
Sheehan is a local musician and I've seen him with 'Tallas' a good number of times even playing High School gigs.
U2 actually opened for Tallas the night John Lennon was shot.
These two NEED their own show. Holy shit. This was the oddball nerd synergy I never knew I needed
The reaction of Paul Gilbert when he heard the killswitch
God I love this man
I never even knew that was a killswitch, it sounded really cool
I wish Paul Gilbert was my friend.
I feel like Paul could be everybody's friend. Absolute legend but no ego.
We all wish he was our friend
Yea Mr. Rogers of guitar! Wont you be my neighbor? 😊
@@dezertson2011 I think most guitar players are a certain type, part cool/part nerdy... my favorite kind of people! WAY cooler than drummers and singers. can I get an AMEN?
We *NEED* more Paul and Josh!
I can’t count all the degrees of humour between those two guy, the whole situation, the sincerity and the wit...love it ! Pure love
This was great! Made me laugh out loud multiple time's!!! Love Paul Gilbert(the dude and the player!) Josh's dry humour is great (and quick!)
I need like.... all the videos to involve Paul Gilbert. These are my favorites.
Same!!!
The humor here is of the highest order. Even when watched from the past future
This has got to be the BEST "interview" I've ever watched. Like two kids on the playground talking about the toys they got for Christmas....btw, the language I understand completely...😂😂😂😂
You can tell the musicians around here. We're the only people that can watch these videos right when they're posted!😆
And Paul Gilbert sounds like David Letterman when he's interviewing Josh...
Dude he was really good at it tbh lots of space to answer and really interacting with his sounds, really good interview
...because we're unemployed.
he does sound like Dave! omg!
@@Anesthesia90 Great interview! I'm just talking about the tone of Paul Gilbert's voice. He always sounds like David Letterman!
Just without the gap tooth...
Paul Gilbert comes across like the nicest and most humble guy ever. I think egos stem from insecurity and Paul is not one that is insecure because he knows what he can do. I wish more people were like that.
Two things:
1. I feel like Josh and Paul showed up to mess with each other for this interview, which is a bit of tongue-in-cheek fun.
2. I would be too overwhelmed to play guitar in front of Paul. It'd be like trying to paint in front of Van Gogh.
Down by the Seaside... such a wonderful tune-Physical Graffiti is such an amazing album.
Would love to see a dedicated shoegaze theme show.
Same
YES
same
Try checking out the channel called Pedal Partners. They do a lot of shoegaze/slowdive stuff
So much dork in one video, I love these guys 😂
There’s no dude chiller than Paul.
I have to agree with Josh on the Klon/KTR - because it's a hard-clipping overdrive, it does its best work as part of a distorted sound. I would almost view the Klon as a kind of alternative Rat.
Paul is so enthusiastic and so positive. I love that about him. And I love that he encourages other guitar styles. He’s probably better than all of us. And he doesn’t talk down to Josh at all. He lifts him up, in fact.
I don't know how they're both keeping a straight face, I'm literally crying
Paul Gilbert is that cool underrated laid back uncle that is a guitar genius but also is excited about anything you do.
And I love it.
Josh and Paul need their own gear show. Their chemistry is AWESOME.
Seeing paul sit there on that stool like a school kid is pretty great.
There is a LOT of Mick Ronson in Josh's tone. Really appreciate all that this channel has quietly done for me. Stay healthy, sonic brothers and sisters. - UK
Josh's pedal board! This is like Lebron showing us his sneaker! Tiger Woods showing us his golf clubs! Rick showing us all his evil inventions in the garage!
paul and josh should become a permanent youtube duo putting up at least one video a week
Never trust a guy with a volume pedal. He'll set it low then when you match his volume he cranks it so you can't hear yourself playing. Just kidding, although I did know a guy with a louder amp than me that did that with his guitar volume knob when I first started playing.
Michael McKenna
Truth! Actually had this happen earlier tonight. And his tone sucked! 🤣
We all know that guy ;)
I used to use that trick because my band mate always turned up a bit his amp in every song 🙄😂
One does not simply play without some volume space to turn up to
Eventide H9 really is a great "do everything else" pedal that doesn't take too much room.
Protect Paul Gilbert at all costs.
fanana bishh protect him from what?
@@paulillingworth90 Anything, at all costs
These two need an ongoing series
This relationship is so pure. Thanks for allowing us to be a part of it!
Pure. Gold. Please have Paul Gilbert interview you every episode. "Just because I haven't heard of it doesn't mean it doesn't exist."
I mostly just listened to this video instead of watching, and a couple times I forgot it was Paul and in my head David Letterman was interviewing josh.
the Letterman thing is spot on.
5:52 Paul: "You're clever."
Josh: Clever?
Paul: Uh hm?
Josh: Alright.
Then he continued. LMAO
I've never seen paul do an interview ever, and he's just so genuine and awesome. Great Guy
"I want it to sound worse, its too good" Comedy gold!
The humor between these two geniuses is truly great. Been listening to Paul G. since 1988, first album wa RACER.X: Live Extreme Volume. Was just blown away. And have learned more about effects pedals from Josh than I ever knew in my 42 years of playing. This is great! Keep doing these videos y'all!
Man, Paul's got an awesome sense of humor and seems like a genuinely cool guy to hang with. You can tell he really loves everything involving guitars. He lives it and breathes it, and it shows.
"Are you a master of jazz?" killed me 😂
You had me at Slowdive...
Watching Paul and Josh riff with each other like that is fun
lmao Paul reacting to the killswitch will be a memory that brings me joy for many years to come.
Paul is insanely funny here, the way he intentionally makes it a tiny bit awkward and the subtle jokes he makes.
as others have had said, he reminds me of letterman just even more subtle
“Did you just write that?” 😂😂
I have so much respect for Paul for how he handled this "interview." Fantastic video.
I like how you can tell someones proffered musical style by their pedal board.
Is Paul G the nicest rock god in the world? He seems so humble and want to truly know what the other person is thinking.
I freaking love Paul Gilbert as an interviewer😂😂😂🤟😎
Paul for President, the man's a diplomat and a genius !
"it doesn't matter if I've heard of them, they're still there" LOOOOL
Paul seemed like he didn’t know what a Klon Centaur was. When Josh mentioned the Klon Paul was like “Cool name!” I’m wondering if he was just being funny. Most likely. 😄
I was surprised when he said he hadn't heard of Slowdive!!!
Caalamus Unfortunately, I’ve come across a bunch of people, musicians, who haven’t heard of Slowdive, or any of those bands. I’m not surprised Gilbert hadn’t heard of them. He comes from a completely different music world.
Caalamus I haven't a clue who Slowdrive is, but since they sound like Shoegaze, I've got to assume they were around in the 90s and Paul was busy being a working and touring musician in the 80s and 90s - so I could see him being too busy to notice a more underground band.
I love that those two pedals are upside because a guy who solders for a living doesn’t wanna solder some cables. Respect.
I always loved Mr Gilbert’s playing but my God he seems like such a genuinely kind guy. The way he talks is so curious and enthusiastic.
This is a “Smashed the Like before the video even finishes loading” situation...
This video should be renamed, "Paul Gilbert interrupts Josh as he tries to talk about his pedalboard" But in all seriousness, I love this.
Everyone should wake up tomorrow and try to be a lil more like Paul Gilbert. Smile constantly and just be happy. World would be a better place with more of him.
The ‘I don’t want blood on my hands’ conversation made my day hahaha
The lonely mammals we had (pause)..no gigs😂😂😂😂😂
"We had no gigs." lol 3:47
Paul played it right here. Paul is a funny guy, but the video was about Josh's set up, so props to both
Aww man... Gilbert's a legend! This is such a cool video idea. Excited to watch! :D.
I like Star Roving by Slowdive. Lots of reverb. I love that atmospheric, ambient, moody stuff.
13:32 is the best thing I’ve ever heard
"i want it to sound a little worse, its too good" brilliant hahahaha
Josh has the post rock sound nailed with that setup.
"And what is the meaning of that one?"
"Mood"
Seriously guys, fucking brilliant watch. Grinning my face off and laughing heartily.
