  • In my sewing room today I show the you 1st results from my Third Wheel of Fate Series.
    I used a viscose challis to create Simplicity 8949 and review the pattern.
    *I do say in the video that the way you construct this garment isn't perfect, I am sure you could sew it another method but you would very much have to change the order of construction, something not for beginners at all! The main issue will be the facings.
    I spin again for the next fabric and pattern and believe me, it is going to be another interesting one.
    Thanks for watching and please like and subscribe if you enjoyed this video.
    Happy Sewing
    Carole

      If you wear the garment in cold it can come back. I quilt and none of the gals in my 🐝 use them for that reason. Just be careful to not put the markings any place that’s visible.

    Hi Carole. Your top turned out really well and I like that you resolved the wafty back panel (is wafty an actual word 🤷🏻‍♀️) with elastic at the bottom. Sometimes you just have to be innovative. Looking forward to the next make and I think that fabric which is the same on both sides is usually yarn dyed and then woven together to produce the fabric. 😃

    • @socarole66
      @socarole66  3 дні тому

      Hi Ann, wafty is such an appropriate word I will let you have that one! I need to learn to avoid these types of patterns but they are always worth a try, glad I could save the fabric.
      You are right about the woven fibres I think, I knew it was something like that. I wish more fabric, especially challis was like that! Thanks for your comment as always 🧵😊x

    Hi Carole I have made the McCall blouse twice now! It is a good pattern and true to size as it is a slightly loose fit.I made it with crepe the first time and then cotton for my second one .I found I could get them over my head without sewing the buttonholes but I did them anyway as I wanted to up level my skills. It's a lovely sew and I get lots of compliments when I wear my ones. Love your fabric as it will drape nicely .
    I liked your elastic hem on your top _what a great idea! Happy Sewing . Xxx

Thanks for watching and Happy Sewing to you as well🧵😊

    Good looking top, Carole! Great save on that underarm seam, I actually hate that method of construction. I have in the past, taken those back pattern pieces and taped them together, traced them as a whole to make a new back pattern and cut it out in one piece, problem solved. I had to do a little magic with my curved rulers, but it was worth it. You are so creative, it will not be a problem for you! Take care😊

    • @socarole66
      @socarole66  4 дні тому +1

      Thanks so much Sue. As you say, the whole 'sew up to the dot thing, break and sew on' never really works for me either! I challenge anyone not to have a tiny hole doing it that way. You fortunately have the know how to redraw the pattern! I do think perhaps you could sew the whole front, then back and join up the sides but the hassle would be the neck facing. Ah well, I tried and got it to work in the end! Thanks so much for your faith in me 🧵😊

    Your pattern reminds me of a blouse I made last year from Butterick 5999. They both kind of hang the same. Although my pattern has a set in sleeve, so I think it is a bit easier to make. I love the blue and white fabric. Not sure that pattern is my favorite but it looks soft and comfortable. I like the elastic at the bottom. Great save. Can't wait to see the next one.

    I have just purchased a pattern very similar to the one you have just made (M7359). I have had a quick look at the instructions (the pattern only arrived today). For view C the yokes, lower front and back are sewn together, then a sleeve band is added to create a short sleeve. This appears to be a much easier construction. Also there is no gathering across the back to create extra volume. Your top and the solution for the extra fabric at the back has turned out well and I love the fabric.

    • @socarole66
      @socarole66  5 днів тому

      Thanks so much for your comment! I have just looked at that pattern and yes it is so similar. I can see how the 'split' sleeve would make it so much easier to construct rather than the whole yoke being the full sleeve on this pattern. Now I want to try that pattern instead 😂. It is also nice that the back isn't gathered as well. Thanks so much for telling me about it and good luck with yours 🧵😊

    Great success!! Love your fabric and your pattern matching was perfect. I forget about that allot when I am cutting out a pattern, have to pay more attention. I would like the airy version as I would need to hide some lumps & bumps. I ❤ blue and most of my wardrobe is in shades of. I try to make other colors but they just sit in my closet, try to wear them but it does not feel right. Very helpful review of the pattern, crazy underarm construction. Your next garment & pattern is a perfect match. Happy sewing !

    I remember when S 8949 came out. I LOVED it, was planning to make a million of them! Then I read through the crazy way they constructed it. Whaat?!? I decided to make it the way I assumed it would be constructed. I made the entire top part, then the bottom part, then sewed them together on the crosswise yoke seam. Much better! Still, I wasn’t as thrilled with it as I had expected, so I never made a second one. So disappointed. 😕

      I was really interested to read your comment and that you had also made the top. If I made it a second time I would just do it my way and a similar way to you but as I was going to do a pattern review I thought it only fair to follow the instructions. I have to say, I won't make another either but mainly because I have discovered those floaty tops don't work for me at all! Thanks so much for taking the time to comment 🧵😊

    Some patterns are just weird (or wrong!) aren’t they? You’ve still made a nice job of it though Carole. I didn’t dislike the loose effect tbh. I thought it hung nicely and looked quite flattering. Very pretty fabric too.
    I’m catching up on all my Friday sews vlogs whilst on holiday in Greece. Wi-Fi is a bit ropey so I’m having to pick out my favourites UA-camrs (and trying not to miss my sewing machine and dog too much! How sad am I?! 🤣) Good luck with your next challenge 👍

    Great save on the top! That pattern sure makes up in to a very blousey-blouse. I like loose tops but that was quite blousey. It seems that I always have to alter my patterns but normally I'm adding to the measurement; I have a feeling I would want to alter to a smaller size on this pattern. It's a holiday around here today -- the 4th of July -- so I'm hoping to do some sewing this afternoon. Happy Sewing!

    Beautiful make, Carole! Came out really well with your slight adjustments. Interesting that the pattern was drafted with excess fabric in the back, but it was a good call to make a wider seam to deal with some of it. Your choosing to put elastic in the bottom really helped with the fullness too. You are always so clever and I enjoy seeing your and other people's problem solving process when it comes to sewing. Hope you're having some perfect summer weather now. No news on the house sale to report. xx🥰 Dori

    Nice option with the elastic to save the lovely patterned fabric! If you make it again, try reducing how much is gathered/excess fabric in the back. it indeed crosses the line from breezy to tent like. Thanks for your review, and if i do own this (i know i like aspects of it) I will keep it in my regret i bought it box--grown-on sleeves rarely work for my big bust & biceps.

    Hi Carole! For the blue and white top, you could sew in a piece of interior elastic at mid back or from side seam to side seam? This will gather the back fabric without ruining the back. Then hem as per instructions. Just a thought.

    • @socarole66
      @socarole66  3 дні тому +1

      Hi Rita, I know exactly what you mean about that elastic around the 'back waist' as I had done that before on a dress. I think the problem with doing that with this dress is the gathering on the back where the yoke meets, it might make it all bag out a bit but certainly worth a try if I make it again. Thanks so much for taking the time to comment 🧵😊

      @ritaadler-everett5392 3 дні тому

      @@socarole66 I forgot about the yoke, Carole. If you make it again, perhaps the fabric under the yoke could be pleated, pin tucks or gathered a bit towards the middle to bring in the excess? Well, anyway, you make me think. Thanks!

      @socarole66  3 дні тому

    Loved your top and I think you’ve made a good move with the elasticated bottom. It's a beautiful top! I think the very loose flowyness would be nice at the beach! But the elastic is such a great idea for everyday wear. Regarding the underarm sewing, is there a reason the underarm seam and the sideseam can't be done at the same time?
