Knowing which is which is hard to not be biased in some cases. Both seem to perform better than the other in different circumstances. I would like to see who picked which video better, without knowing which one was which.
i support your answer. i can see that the z1, remain true eye view rather than iphone. iphone increase its saturation and contrast in colour. just look at the flower and sunset shooting. The z1 is much more natural. gonna buy it, after watching this video.
Muhd Randy I just love the xperia. Im hoping the rumor of the z3 going to verizon is true because overall it is my favorite device. I really just love how it looks and the overall concept/specs of the device. Its clean and classy looking but rugged and durable
Just bought the z1 1 week ago, really happy with it. Even though the camera overheat quickly, forcing it to stop. But, when I compare z1 with s5(my friend phone) side by side for camera comparison, the z1 win for sure as, the detail and sharpness is much better.
A really fascinating shootout, Blunty! Just as I think the iPhone has it sown up, the Sony reaches out does something better. A true back and forth battle. Generally, though, the 5s had nicer colours and contrast but the Xperia had better detailing and seemed better in poor light. Fascinating.
I just ditched my iPhone 5 for a Z1, but I must say the 5S photos and video look quite good, even when compared to the Z1. I too would like wider FOVs, but you know... I can shoot underwater.
The z1 was arguably better in the low-light situations but had noticeable washout in bright light situations. The 20mp didn't come across in cleaner, crisper footage ( or stills, for that matter). The close-up detail of the 5s surprised me. Good comparison on both phones, Blunty.
As a camera nerd, I think it's safe to say the 5S is the winner. I was really hoping the Z1 to be since all this talk about how great the camera was. The 5S has more detail, less moire, and most importantly more dynamic range. Good comparison Blunty:)
I like the Z1 performance in low light and how the colours really pop in brighter situations. The only thing I liked about the iPhone was how detailed it the closer images appeared.
actually what i thought is: Sony emphasized a little too much on the red. Both cameras didn't capture the red of the flower accurately as our eyes would see it. 5S gets you more blue (of the sky) when out in the open, and also somehow 'darkens' the green of the grass / shrubs. Z1 is more natural in this case. Though 5S's algorithm ensures nicer looking colors, but I prefer something that's more natural. But the final few shots clearly showed that Z1 works better than 5S.
Great review. The 5s really seems to shine above the Z1. Would be great to see the 5S compared to the Lumia 1020. BTW, is that a custom rig you've made for doing those videos? What are you using to mount each of the phones? I've been looking for a good mount.
Just my opinion and I;m not an expert. Idk about which one is have better quality or even which one have truer colour. But I admit iPhone shootout is more pleasing to see. If you stop at 1:26 the colour gradation in iPhone looks better, in 1:36 iPhone show the shape of the sun while Sony make the light look blurry, in 1:53 in Sony, the sunlight become white. However in 3:40 the flower's colour in Sony seems to be more natural than the iPhone.
My opinion:The iphone 5s clearly won this because of how steady it was. The colors were a little bit more natural on z1, but i like just a tiny bit more those on the 5s. (Android user here)
Wow. The iP5S video stabilizition is really good. And I like how the camera doesn't blow out the highlights like Z1 does. Both great phones, but I'll have to opt for the iphone when it comes to camera.
The Z1 clearly let's in more light so, to my eye, works better at night. It also seems to give better reds where the iPhone shows a somewhat orange hue. I've heard that's a sign of quality as red is difficult to reproduce. However, the iPhone scores over the Z1 with a wider field of view & also handles contrast markedly better. In the high contrast scenes you can definitely see more in the iPhone whereas parts of the scene are obliterated in whiteout in the Z1. I guess that's because it let's in more light. I have the iPhone 5S & the slo-mo feature is the coolest part for me. Use it all the time & it's instant & at 120fps. I don't think the Z1 does that although tell me if I'm wrong. :-)
Analysing : 01:52 the light reflection is better on iphone 5s it seems more realistic more natural than on experia z1 take a look ---------> 01:50 minute Also image stabilisation ---> iphone wins take a look --->00:45 the image on experia z1 is shaking a little bit !!! 03:09 -----> the flower color on iphone 5s much better
Good video, I think it's fairly even overall. They both have ups and downs to their respective video modes. They're both fantastic, amazing how mobile phone (cell phone) photography has come in the last few years.
Very similar to the photo shootout. iPhone 5s has better white balance and more dynamic range. Some of the shots in the Z1 are sometimes better, but the majority of the time, the iPhone has more usable footage I think. I'd really like to hear Blunty's opinion on these stills and videos. Yes, it's nice that he's giving us the chance to judge by ourselves, but I wanna hear his opinion from a camera professional side.
I like them both and also have both the iPhone 5 and the Xperia Z1 in my household. Nice video by the way. A question if you don't mind... Did you figure out how to pause the video on the Z1 so that you can change focus, frame another view and generally make a single video more interesting? It is a absolute must on any other video camera but it doesn't seem to be available on my Z1.
As it stands, the iPhone, but as an all round better phone, the Z1, also Sony releases updates for the camera all the time.. And the iPhone camera is optimized brilliantly!!! With the Z1 you have to manually sort it all. Thanks for the video. Really interesting
At 2:18 the Xperia seemed to "freeze" for a bit and I noticed some glitchy behaviour in your last video. Does it happen a lot? That would be a deal-breaker for me.
In my opinion, the z1 is better in low light and has more realistic colors overall. The 5s is a bit over saturated in some scenarios but has a faster focus.
They both videos look great, but I have to say I was looking into Iphone's camera interface and I feel what sells me is the 120 fps option and eco-system support.
This one seems closer than the stills shootout. There's shots where I liked better on Xperia Z1 and shots I liked better on the 5S but I think 5S wins by a smaller margin this time. 5S appears to have better dynamic range and image stabilization. Both quite impress me as cameras on mobile phones.
I can't decide of the Z1 is slightly over-exposing or the 5S slightly under-exposing... though this seems slightly inconsistent on occasions anyway. I'd probably be very happy to be given either of them.... (please) :)
iPhone 5S Dynamic range noticable at @ 1:24 , . Just look at the church. and the highlights. The church is brighter in the iPhone 5S when they have same level of EV in highlights. Of course there's more when you look at the blown highlights.
Nice Side by side. iPhone seems a bit warmer. but the Z1 seems sharper. The one issue that stood out for me on the Z1 is that the autofocus seems to work harder making the shot jump. At first I thought it was stabilization, but I think it's the focus or exposure making the whole shot jump or change in depth. It is weird. I had to make it Full screen to see what it was really doing. That might be able to be fixed in software.
Very similiar, even though others would prefer the more bright and clearer colors, I enjoy the 5s. The saturated colors just makes it look more vibrant. I rather capture that on video/picture to make things look less dull. Thanks for the comparison.
In the first few shots the Z1 seemed to have better exposure but after Blunty stopped talking the 5s started having better exposure, and throughout the whole video, the 5s seemed more detailed.
Wow, I'm surprised that the Sony seems to have worse stabilization. Also, I really liked your video showing the 5s 120fps video, which is a feature absent from the Sony in HD, so I've got to give this matchup to Apple. But if you happen to have an RX100II sitting around, you're able to bump the xperia and camera together to transfer from camera to phone, so that may tempt some shooters toward the sony.
Thought they weren't too different but going to 1080p res and full screen really showed a huge difference, especially at 2:54 when the detail in the roof was destroyed by the Z1. The Z1 also seems a tad overexposed while the iPhone is warmer in colour. The Z1's focus hunting was really annoying
Ah~ That explains why the image quality itself is rather similar, but the Xperia seems to portray the world a bit more accurately, where the iphone presents it to with a bit more of a dream-like quality. It's really up to preference.
5s footage seemed much more usable to me. you can always recolour, and slightly boost exposure if you feel the need. you cannot fix focus hunting, stuttering, and over exposure. for a point and shoot quick share video device, the 5s seemed to produce more "finished product" material... where as I would probably be tweaking the Z1's footage before I shared it. Interesting stuff though, considering footage from Apple's devices have been notoriously "cold" if I recall correctly...
I think the Sony took 2 out of 3 in the video shootout. Most of the iphone shots seemed to have excessive yellow bias to them. Not all, but about 75%. Only Blunty can say which ones were reproduced more accurately, and he's not saying [yet]. Sometimes the iphone had a more complete tonal range going for it.
i had an iphone 5 and now i have an xperia z1 and i can say both have really great cameras, i think iphone has fast focusing when u shooting, however it seems a little whashed out and doenst have auto-focus mode while recording... The xperia Z1 is great, but it takes a litte bit more of time to focusing when shooting.
I prefer the 5S videos, the quality looks a lot better and the COLOURS seem more natural. (the Z1 look at bit pixely at some points). but, sometimes the Z1 did seem to make the videos look better, not so much the colours, but the objects and lighting looked more natural... all depends on the environment i guess. this was tough to pick!
Can somebody help me? Dont know to which i will buy.. Cannot decide at all! Im planning to buy a new phone and seeing these choices between xperia z1 or iphone 5S.. Which is which?
I agree I think the color range is better on the iPhone. If you look at the sky in many of of the scenes it is always a nice blue on the iphone. it is blown out often on the z1.
ok now this i will have to give to the Xperia Z1 mostly because it shoots the quality of video i am looking for in a regular camera the iphone 5s is not bad at all but i have to say the dark shots and lower light shots all seemed more pleasant to look at to me on the Z1 that being said i did notice some rolling shutter issues on the Z1 that didn't occur on the 5s so depending on what you want and what you are willing to sacrifice out of the phone this one could very well be a draw
I just got the Z1s because of the camera and screen size. Inside All my pics have a lot of yellow and the pics looked washed out and over all look bad again that's in doors. Looking back at my IPhone 4s I think i'm going to take the z1s back and get the iPhone 5s. I just hate that it's so small. If the camera did what I needed it to do I would hands down keep the Z1s but after looks back at the pics from my old IPhone how could I. I have 3 kids I take lots of pic and videos.
I am also not fully amused about my actually Z1 in comparison to the Galaxy S2 i had before - but i would not change back. The problem is not the camera, cause the technical part would match - but it is the software. I still hope they make soon a update. Iphone is no option for me - as you say, it is too small, and Android has some more options i would not like to miss. Theres now the Z2 coming... its very possible that it will give then also a upgrade or update for the cam of the Z1, the new compact. I am sure this now is not the standard forever.
The 5S won this test by a clear margin. Every single shot where there is a high-rise building in the background in bright sunlight, it is totally blown out on the Z1.
I saw the thumbnail clip and decided that the one on the left looked better. I didn't see which one was which, I chose what I thought looked better. The colours all just seem nicer (can you tell I'm not a photographer? XD) I was surprised when I saw it was the Xperia, because I honestly thought the 5s looked better in stills
I'm quite surprised people vote the Z1, clearly the 5s has much better dynamic range and doesn't blow the whites nearly as much. Detail is also better with the 5s and as it is metering for the highs you'll have much more room to move in video editing software. Colours are also certainly truer with the 5s. Not surprisingly, my vote goes to the 5s (PS: I'm a Samsung Galaxy user, so there's no bias here, just observations from the above video)
In the still shootout, I thought the iPhone won, hands down. Here, on the other hand, the Z1 appears to me to typically have a much clearer and more accurate color saturation. The iPhone tends to be much more yellowish in a lot of shots. Hard choice, considering the stills.
On the Z1, the shot gets a lil jumpy. It seems like autofocus is over compensating making it hiccup just ever so slightly and very quickly. Might be fixed with software update.
... in automatic mode år Superior mode when it comes to Sunlight. I guess its to maybe save the lens or something. But if you did use the settings this is something that can be avoided. But iPhone deftinately handles direct sunlight into the lens better in the automatic mode. That strange lag I saw in Z1 might be what people said, some sort of a bugg when it comes to focus. But it could also be the case that the phone twice in the movie got a message. It do sometimes tend to pause featerues...
First of all, damn, those are good camera phones. Second, I like the way the Z1 looks if you're recording memorable things, if that makes sense. Where as the 5S looks more like a professional, surreal, extraordinary look to it.
I can see that the Z1 is a bit jumpy with the focus but a bit better at colour balance and better DOF as where the 5s is a bit to warm but it has better image stabilisation. lighting is evenly good/bad. Sharpness varies, sometimes the z1 is way sharper, other times pretty soft, could be a focus thing. It's a difficult choice but i think the 5s does a better job. White balance can be easily fixed by a third party app but image stabilisation and focus hunt are way more difficult to compensate for.
I think the z1 did pretty good job on the low light but when it comes in daylight it went a little too far you can't reply see its true color and the iPhone did a pretty good job on daylight situations but the video in it is very yellowish, both of them has it's unique feature and if you'll buy one of them you still won't be disappointed ...
If you mean the iPhone is exaggerating colors that's possible. however there is no way to tell by looking at just two examples. You will need a third truly color corrected sample. However i will say it was easier to see color differences with the iPhone (flower scene). Also I think most consumers prefer a bit more color saturation than reality.
3 reasons the 5s is better 1. The dynamic range of the 5s is clearly much better than the Z1. 2. Even in high contrast scenes, the Z1 seems to have focusing issues, where the 5s decides and holds focus smoothly. 3. As also mentioned in many comments here, the image stabilization of the 5s is much better. The Z1 is just to shaky.
Well done, you let the video comparison do the talking itself with good scenarios to compare, not like a lot of others who just love the sound of their own voices,, Anyways, I loved the i phone, better colour saturation, however in the macro shots, I think the z1 came out a little better,, but i think the i phone wins this.
I think the Z1 looks better. Especially at 1:34 The palm is looking blacker on the Z1 and also that area under the palm. It also has more contrast at 1:39. The iphone videos may look warmer, but I think it looks more natural on the Z1, but hey, that's my opinion.
grading and compression are much better on the iPhone, while the Z1 seems to be struggling and even stuttering. AA is crappy on both. Dynamic range and exposure seem to be nicer on the Z1 but nowhere near perfect. I think 3rd party/future camera firmware would make the Z1 better than the 5S but I think the iPhone wins for basic shooting as is
The Z1 has a better white balance day and night, and it has a better performance in low light condition. Both phones have a good image and video stabilization. One thing mess up on the iphone is that a yellowish images and video.
Z1's camera is in the level of Lumia 1020 ... that being said, just pause the video in any given time, and you'll notice how sharper the footage from Z1 look like!
I'm an Xperia (ZR) owner, but in this case I have to admit that the iPhone 5S clearly wins. It handles stabilization, compression, backlight and colours a lot better.
And just like with the stills the 5s just offers much more dynamic range and better Noise performance but I do get the feeling that it has this slightly greenish touch, and loses some of the detail to pump up the saturation. Anyway still better than the XZ1. It's video, you don't need that Mp count... allthough it kept better greytones in low contrast cases.
INCORRECT. Apple's iPhones se sony SENSORS, but EVERYTHING ELSE that makes a camera whty it is, optical design, lens quality, data processing, the JPG engine, is all Apple.
z1 seems fine in some videos and 5s seems fine in some videos. It's pretty tie but I don't like the crop of z1. Overall both are good and I would be happy with z1 .
Prefer dynamic range and colour reproduction on the iPhone, and the image stabilization is unarguably superior. However, I prefer the low light performance of the Z1. Would probably take the iPhone since I'm more likely to record video in decent lighting conditions and I have a particular dislike for shaky videos.
It's purely an opinion but I prefer the iPhone. The colours are warmer and the contrast is nicer but then I suppose the dynamic range of the Xperia is slightly better. Swings and roundabouts really.
i think the z1 looks a little more natural, and the iphone 5s looks more cinematic it depends on the taste... i would go with the z1 because it would be awesome having the many pixels (and there is hardly any difference between these two in terms of quality wise).
It's really hard to decide, both performed better in different situations. The iPhone however, for this test I would pick in this situation. Still don't like iTunes though.
Great videos as always, Blunty, keep it up! I know I appreciate them!
Knowing which is which is hard to not be biased in some cases.
Both seem to perform better than the other in different circumstances.
I would like to see who picked which video better, without knowing which one was which.
3:02 is it supposed to be red or Purple? bcuz how can i else decide wich one is the best in that shot?
The iPhone got it right.
Alcatraz Aronsson most of the time a rose is red ;-)
YoungDutchGamers yeah sorry haha. now when i look back and read the comment i go like 'wow what an idiot i was' :D
Nice video as always Blunty!
Xperia. The lighting is much more natural looking. The iphone does too much correction with the sun and it looks unnatural
i support your answer. i can see that the z1, remain true eye view rather than iphone. iphone increase its saturation and contrast in colour. just look at the flower and sunset shooting.

About the overheat, I rinse my phone with water to cool it down, haha:)lol. What the function of the waterproof, if we dont use it.
Precise and informative comparison, pleasant music allowing me to concentrate .
Thank you so much and congratulations on a really great video
A really fascinating shootout, Blunty! Just as I think the iPhone has it sown up, the Sony reaches out does something better. A true back and forth battle.

where did you get that dual tripod?
The iPhone 5s has digital stabilisation also... but it does it without cropping in so severely.
I like the Z1 performance in low light and how the colours really pop in brighter situations. The only thing I liked about the iPhone was how detailed it the closer images appeared.
actually what i thought is:
Sony emphasized a little too much on the red.

Analysing :

Also image stabilisation ---> iphone wins take a look --->00:45 the image on experia z1 is shaking a little bit !!!
03:09 -----> the flower color on iphone 5s much better
I like 5s better, tho Z1 is much better phone over all, also price is better.
As much as I love videos made by 5s I still pick Z1 over Iphone.
Hey Blunty,Please make a xperia z vs z1 camera comparison.Keep making good videos!
Great opening with the Music in the Back :)
At 3:00 Nate, what was the actual color of the flower. One is red and one ours purple?
Good video, I think it's fairly even overall. They both have ups and downs to their respective video modes. They're both fantastic, amazing how mobile phone (cell phone) photography has come in the last few years.
The image stabilisation in the 5s is interesting again. Really makes a difference. You can see the Z1 being just a little more jittery.

Really close but I have to give it to the z1 low light and wider viewing angles.
Blunty can you do some indoor low light flash pictures
is the flower in 3:02 a red flower or a pink one?
5s footage seemed much more usable to me. you can always recolour, and slightly boost exposure if you feel the need. you cannot fix focus hunting, stuttering, and over exposure.

"Although the Z1 is older than the 5S"
... no, it's not. They both became available at almost the exact same time.
Sorry Apple, but in camera segment, sony win
I saw the thumbnail clip and decided that the one on the left looked better. I didn't see which one was which, I chose what I thought looked better. The colours all just seem nicer (can you tell I'm not a photographer? XD) I was surprised when I saw it was the Xperia, because I honestly thought the 5s looked better in stills
Great vid. Thank you . iPhone 5s camera did really great result.
You sure have some interesting environments in Sydney!
what do you think about audio?
Red. Quite red. The Z1 completely screwed up the white balance on that one.
First of all, damn, those are good camera phones. Second, I like the way the Z1 looks if you're recording memorable things, if that makes sense. Where as the 5S looks more like a professional, surreal, extraordinary look to it.
Doesn't Sony make the sensor used in the iPhone? Does that mean the difference is down to software only?
That's exactly what I thought. The colors also tend to pop more on the 5S.
I think I prefer the Z1's performance. The videos have a better colour balance and the stills seem to have more detail. Both are great though.
What is up with the Sony's Autofocus! Also, is the Sony's random stuttering (Lack of a better word) Just me or Post editing at all? Seems weird?
I've downloaded and watched this 3 times on a 60" TV and don't see any lag. Blunty's scenes are in focus at all times.
Where do you see lag?
If you mean the iPhone is exaggerating colors that's possible. however there is no way to tell by looking at just two examples. You will need a third truly color corrected sample. However i will say it was easier to see color differences with the iPhone (flower scene). Also I think most consumers prefer a bit more color saturation than reality.
3 reasons the 5s is better
I wanna say the Z1 produces a more natural look, but the 5S scrolls smoothly and captures a more "luxurious" tone.
I think the Z1 looks better. Especially at 1:34 The palm is looking blacker on the Z1 and also that area under the palm. It also has more contrast at 1:39. The iphone videos may look warmer, but I think it looks more natural on the Z1, but hey, that's my opinion.
Why you no do HTC reviews?
Both phones have superior camera! But I'm impressed with the iphone 5s' advanced image stabilization. The video looks much more smooth.
Im impressed on how well the 5s compares to the Z1 considering the mp difference.
grading and compression are much better on the iPhone, while the Z1 seems to be struggling and even stuttering. AA is crappy on both. Dynamic range and exposure seem to be nicer on the Z1 but nowhere near perfect. I think 3rd party/future camera firmware would make the Z1 better than the 5S but I think the iPhone wins for basic shooting as is
Xperia Z1 the winner!!!
The Z1 has a better white balance day and night, and it has a better performance in low light condition. Both phones have a good image and video stabilization. One thing mess up on the iphone is that a yellowish images and video.
Z1 has more natural colors and better lowlight performance. The 5S has better contrast and pleasing saturation.
So yeah, it all depends on the users.
Z1's camera is in the level of Lumia 1020 ... that being said, just pause the video in any given time, and you'll notice how sharper the footage from Z1 look like!
X1 looks better to me in most situations. Thank you for the video.
The colors and the accurate amount of light is the most important with good sharpness I'll really say it good to the iphone as a professional
Interesting. The stills were pretty damn close in quality, but in video the 5s seems leaps and bounds better.
It's really hard to decide, both performed better in different situations. The iPhone however, for this test I would pick in this situation.
Still don't like iTunes though.
