The Xperia seems to deliver a flatter and sharper image than the iPhone. iPhone makes the image high contrast and saturation inside the camera but I prefer to do this in my computer if it needs to be done. So I think I prefer the Xperia's camera.
@blunty3000 Thank you for what is, easily, the most useful side-by-side comparison I've seen between the two cameras! So nice to see the test being performed by a proper photographer rather than some fan-boy journo hack. These are the kinds of images I'd be shooting so this is the kind of review I've been aching to see! There seems to be some softening of detail due to Sony's post-processing but it seems a lot less pronounced than in earlier reviews. Indeed, its hard to tell the two apart.
Also, what I would love to see is how the two compare in taking portraits in different circumstances: bright daylight, night time with flash, and night time without flash. Those are important since many phone users want a phone to take those "in-the-bar/club/nightlife" shots of friends etc
I have the Xperia z and I think by far its better than the iphone. The pictures are amazing and the video quality it's awesome.some of my friend have the iPhone 5s and the pictures are not as detail as the Xperia , so my next up grade will be the newest Xperia that comes out.
I don't like iPhones but the Experia is not a clear winner here. Yes it has better low light and much more details but the iPhone has better color and daytime. If I had to pick one for every shots, I'd have to go with the iPhone. But that's the only thing I'd use it for. ;) Nate Burr can you throw a note 3 into the mix?
The still of the Subaru Legacy really blew me away. On the iPhone, it seems as if the colors are so warm that it almost washes away the colors.. And even the black was looking faded. On the Xperia, however, the Subaru looks almost professionally taken, then enhanced in Photoshop, minus the photoshop! Very nice comparison!
which case are you using for the iPhone 5? I know it is not relevant to the content of the video but I've been trying to get a nice case for the phone and yours looks good.
I think unless you're biased or blind it's pretty clear the Sony takes better night time shots without flash, particularly showing more detail in low light. In bright light situations and outdoors I still find the iPhone to be the gold standard by which all other devices need to be compared. I think this Sony gets as close to it in this situation as I've ever seen. So all in all I'd go with the Sony. Thanks for your videos. They are extremely well done.
The iPhone really holds up well despite being a bit older and looks amazing during well lit subjects. Still carrying my iPhone 4S and its camera still does a great job. The weakness of both the 4S and the 5 are shown in low light but overall, I love the clarity of the iPhone 5 camera and its color balance. My squishybit tells me so.
can you make a vid of htc one vs xperia z photp and vid shootout.... if u cannot make them now so can you tell me which phone is better overall and ofcourse camera wise....
@Blunty3000 would the waterproofing of the phone affect the cameras performance, say the type of glass/plastic used to cover the lens affects the light entering?
In daytime, it really is the iPhone 5 that has a more warm and natural color to me (viewed on my HDTV with the Wii U browser) but grabbed my iPad 2 to to seen on a different screen and to comment. The Sony does a great job picking up light in nighttime shots but with more noise and color temperature was also on the much cooler side as well with the Sony. Overall both are great cameras and while more megapixels sound great! Don't get caught up in the megapixel myth folks, more may not mean better
iPhone 5 Over-Saturates the colors (Especially at 1:26). In Low-Light, the iPhone 5 produces some heavy artifacts (1:16) while the Z has less artifacts and more details (2:15). Focus of the iPhone 5 is better at 2:21. The Z seems to have problems with the focus sometimes as other shots are better.
I would edge towards the Xperia Z as I prefer it's colour reproduction and I love nighttime photography, also from the previous video the Z has a smoother camera frame rate and stabilization. But for shots taken in the middle of the day the iPhone does handle bright sunlight much better
XPeria seems to show colors more realistic, this is something I always believe when I see pictures from a Sony device. But what I really like are the pics at night, that are amazing shots for a smartphone I think.
I really like the images coming from the Xperia Z, It has just more dynamic range and has flatter tones. It's something I like and this is coming from my own opinion.
Very Very similar. Both VERY Nice. Although the color palate of the Sony leans towards the blue/cooler tones and the iPhone leans towards warmer tones.
It seems to me (someone with little to no photography knowledge) that they both have their pro's and cons in each different shooting environment and sort of equal out in quality overall, one will perform better where the other lacks, and vice versa, making them something of equal.
Can't say I think either is clearly better, there were photos where both clearly beat the other and some practically the same. I do prefer the colours of the Z in those pictures that were practically the same, but I can't objectively pick a winner of which is best from this video (or any I have seen so far).
ive been waiting for a stills compilation as ive ordered my xperia z and heared bad things with the camera. looks fine to me. not much between them until the car shot and the z looked far better there. still dont know if i should get the htc one instead.
I think (Personally) the Experia Z is better camera wise. Those few megapixels make a huge difference in picture quality. Note: I am an iPhone owner, but the Z is the replacement phone I'm looking at since my upgrade date is coming up soon. Any POLITE opinions on these 2 would be nice to hear.
Up until this point, the camera on the Xperia Z has seemed a crushing disappointment to me, based on comparison shots I've seen online. This gives me some hope that my pre-order hasn't been in vain. I'll see for myself sometime in the next week - if it doesn't beat out my Xperia S, back it goes to the shop. Thanks, Blunty! (P.S. do you think it beats out the Xperia S in photography? It seems an improvement in low light shots).
ONLY if the lens is capable of resolving that extra -potential- detail... a 20MP sensor with a crappy lens infront of it will NOT be sharper and have more detail than a 12MP sensor with a highly engineered lens on it.
I like the color of the Xperia, but I like the crispness of the iPhone. The Xperia does look sharper in low light though. I'd personally choose the Xperia because I love the colors.
i'd have to disagree with some people who picked the iPhone 5 yes the iPhone has some sort of auto cripser, its better at zoom, but that's because it doesn't seems to have a cap over the Xperia overall the Xperia handled the scenes better, it may not of had the color 'pop' in an artistic since, but it handled exposure and lighting well overall only thing i don't like is the zoom, a minor setback
The iphone is sharper and the colors are more vibrant, but I love the flares the xperia has and the way it performs at night... I'd use the Xperia with artistic filters and stuff and the Iphone if I want something straight out of the camera.
I agree. Both are good and there's not an over the top clear winner. You would think since Sony does make lots of sensors for other cameras and them having some awesome cameras of there own they would blow the doors off. C'mon Sony your holding back but it's understandable they want give just enough to be a bit better but they also want you to buy there own cameras.
That's about exactly what I was going to say (without the numbers). The iPhone 5 is generally better in the day, and the Xperia Z is generally better at night.
Xperia Z makes pictures with best colours, but sometimes Z damages details in 100% corp. iPhone makes images good at sun, but in the low light Xperia Z wins, all details are good and sharp in 100% corp, for my opinion.
I'm impressed with the Xperia Z, it deals with the highlights much better than the iPhone. It seems the Xperia has more dynamic range than the iPhone, despite it having more megapixels. Good job Sony.
well ... the it's a hard decision to make between them both ... in the videos footage the xperia wins but here in the stills the Iphone made a pretty good job I found that it's pictures are a little sharper sometimes .... but !! overall I would prefer the xperia I really like it's colors ... By the way .... you are amazing buddy !! ;)
Good to know, especially when people like to ignorantly give all the credit to iPhone, "just because the majority of people who take pictures prefer iPhone..".
almost the same... except to the fact that Xperia can take pix underwater...and a wider screen...more depth in zoom...but all in all, It depends on the person using the phone.
im a iPhone 5 user, but i can tell your a fanboy because i can tell you that the iPhone 5 lost this battle, at 2:08 and 0:51, its really noticeable of how much sharper it is and detail, and that is because of the extra pixels it has.
Also I believe the HDR was off, so those saying the iPhone5 was better in daylight should maybe look at a comparison with it on as HDR works in daylight. I've no doubt the Xperia Z is far superior to the IPhone.
The is negligible difference between them, IP5 seems to be sharper while the XPZ seems to have better color representation. I would think that both can be adj for the desired results.
I thought with video that the iPhone was better, with stills I think the iphone is slightly better, there were only a couple of night shots with the Xperia that I preferred. Would never know that the Xperia was 13mp v 8 for the iphone as in most cases the iphone is as sharp or better and I prefer the colour tones of the iphone more, the Xperia looks a little flat to me, that is more my preference. I would like to see some HDR but that comes down more to what the app can do than the camera...
Seems like the Xperia Z got better lens, sensor and low light performance But the software on the iPhone resolving better exposure, color, and focus. This is tough to pick :\
I'd say Xperia wins here quite clearly. True that iPhone is slightly better at dayLIGHT, but xperia beats iPhone in shadows both during the daytime and nighttime. Much more clearly the winner than in the video mode.
The iphone 5 uses the last gen sony sensor (sony makes all the highend sensors for manufacturers). here, without a dslr to compare with its incredibly difficult. The iphone 5 seems to over saturate, the xperia z has too much agressive noise reduction resulting in loss of details.
Both perform well. The iPhone 5 is better all-round, except for when it's dark. Then the Xperia Z is very good. I think I'll stick with my iPhone 5 though.
The xperia z about 70% of the time had more detail and was brighter. The times when the iphone 5 won there was this nice overlay of brightness and color that mad the image look beautiful but if I zoomed in I noticed the image lacked detail under the scrutiny of zoom
In general the dynamic range of the iPhone 5 slightly better, but my eyes may have been playing tricks on me because the results extremely close in terms of quality.
In low light conditions, the xperia z o way better than the iphone but in day light the iPhone is more "precise" in details. In overall, the xperia z is better for me.
13mp, my bad, all the photos days and nights, Sony's latest sensor produce brilliant, far better shots compared to iPhone, after seen this video back in 1080p full HD.
Yes I agree in lowlight Sony wins, and actually sony is sharper than Iphone since sony using a wider lenses and from the photo of the beer, I can see that sony have lil bit more vibrance. oh man you make me miss sydney with that picture of beer and that chinatown music background haha
Well depends if you want a clear shot outside Xperia z (terrains) is better but if you are taking pictures indoor or zooming in iPhone 5 is better. This is what I see
Personally, I like the Xperia Z pictures better. And I'm 100% sure that Blunty likes the Sony "camera" best. I would go as far as betting everyone's money on it.
The iPhone 5 pics looks much better during the day compared to the Z at night the Z is marginally better. In terms of video the iPhone 5 is better during the day and night. Therefore iPhone 5 would win in my opinion. I would have like to have seen an indoor flash shot of a lounge/bar to see how clear it is or if the picture is misty from the flash bounce.
aaah.... tis is so much closer than the video... again, the iPhone seems to expose the pictures more accurately, and, in most cases, pushes out better saturated colors... That being said she Z looks like it nails de WB better than the iPhone, and the sheer resolution might just give it the extra fine detail to get ahead on this one, given that you can easily compensate the Z's overexposure if you want to.
1:28 , again look at the middle of the door completely over-blown exposure, to the point where it looks light pink, same with the ground way too bright cant even make out the detail. 2:04 umbrella, bluish tint again, tree in the back of that umbrella has a bluish green glow around it on the iPhone 5. 2:14 licence plate, yellow tint on iPhone 5, white on the Xperia Z. Its preety obvious the the iPhone 5 is over saturated at this point, so it doesn't have real picture/color reproduction.
Xperia z definitely wins but..... Considering its size and everything compare to Iphone 5 I was expecting more on its camera. Imagine if iphone 5 was as big as sony, they can probably come up with something better.... Then again they r more likely to stick with a compact design.
Iphone 5 was better in daylight, but xperia Z was better at night with neonlight. The iphone 5 did suck in more detail and had better color reproduction, though.
The Z camera is perfect for nighttime pictures , although not that much of a difference between the two cameras , in some cases the iPhone won , keep in mind it's 8mp going against 13 mp
What amazes me is your 100% crop of that harbour landscape - based on other reviews online, I was expecting the Xperia Z to look absolutely f*cking awful (excuse my French),... and it doesn't. Indeed, there's virtually no difference at all. What I would say is that the seed head shot at 2.20 is focused differently on the Z (I know you tried to focus the same - I get that): look at the top right edge on the Z - it's in focus and is crisp: the middle isn't. An issue with the focusing of the Z?
They were about 65-35 for me with the z on the upper hand. However, where do iPhones camera come from? SONY. So overall the z wins and is obviously the better choice for camera quality.
I've done a bit of work with a dslr n I'm not an expert but IMO saying the images speak for themselves is a bit inaccurate. I keep going back n forth finding pics from the iPhone that look better n then some the Z looks better. So I'm lost.
The Xperia seems to deliver a flatter and sharper image than the iPhone. iPhone makes the image high contrast and saturation inside the camera but I prefer to do this in my computer if it needs to be done. So I think I prefer the Xperia's camera.

I always look forward to your videos, Blunty! Thanks for your amazing content!
Cracking video Blunty. Very difficult to really spot a real difference as both seem to take fantastic shots!
Also, what I would love to see is how the two compare in taking portraits in different circumstances: bright daylight, night time with flash, and night time without flash. Those are important since many phone users want a phone to take those "in-the-bar/club/nightlife" shots of friends etc

Both look great. I kinda wanna see a shootout between the 5S and LG G2 though. You think you'll be able to make it happen in the near future bluntly?
which case are you using for the iPhone 5? I know it is not relevant to the content of the video but I've been trying to get a nice case for the phone and yours looks good.

can you make a vid of htc one vs xperia z photp and vid shootout....

this video was funnier than i expected lol! xD *squishy bits*
@Blunty3000 would the waterproofing of the phone affect the cameras performance, say the type of glass/plastic used to cover the lens affects the light entering?
you can still take pictures underwater if you download an application like volshutter which uses the volume rocker to take the photos.
In daytime, it really is the iPhone 5 that has a more warm and natural color to me (viewed on my HDTV with the Wii U browser) but grabbed my iPad 2 to to seen on a different screen and to comment. Blunty, is the xperia z is durable enough to survive some drop by accidentally? What can you say about the durability of xperia Z?
iPhone 5 Over-Saturates the colors (Especially at 1:26). In Low-Light, the iPhone 5 produces some heavy artifacts (1:16) while the Z has less artifacts and more details (2:15). Focus of the iPhone 5 is better at 2:21. The Z seems to have problems with the focus sometimes as other shots are better.

i have a 16mm lens. please tell me more how much detail i have in my picture
I really like the images coming from the Xperia Z, It has just more dynamic range and has flatter tones. It's something I like and this is coming from my own opinion.

do your xperia z drains battery quite fast? or just normal?
Up until this point, the camera on the Xperia Z has seemed a crushing disappointment to me, based on comparison shots I've seen online. This gives me some hope that my pre-order hasn't been in vain. I'll see for myself sometime in the next week - if it doesn't beat out my Xperia S, back it goes to the shop.
Thanks, Blunty! (P.S. do you think it beats out the Xperia S in photography? It seems an improvement in low light shots).
XPERIA Z is awesome.. Nice video Blunty good job
Definitely agree. The iPhone is a day shooter whilst the Z can handle low light with ease.
Best frames was by iPhone 5, my opinion cause clarity and sharpness of the images bluntly, Thnxs & bless you
ONLY if the lens is capable of resolving that extra -potential- detail... a 20MP sensor with a crappy lens infront of it will NOT be sharper and have more detail than a 12MP sensor with a highly engineered lens on it.
dude i love it when you reply like that lmao
it just proved what sony was advertising the xmor RS SENSER for better low light
Xperia Z at night, iPhone 5 in the day. The latest Xperia range has been pretty successful, for its cost, the Z wins over 5.
I found my opinion bouncing back and forth as more pictures were displayed. Unfortunately at the end, I was left on the fence on this one.
Thanks a lot. Both look pretty to me. But for my opinion, I like the Z more.
I like the color of the Xperia, but I like the crispness of the iPhone. The Xperia does look sharper in low light though.

C'mon Sony your holding back but it's understandable they want give just enough to be a bit better but they also want you to buy there own cameras.
The iPhone 5 just appears sharper because the 100% crop is closer. In every crop comparison you'll see that the iPhone is a tad bit zoomed out.
That's about exactly what I was going to say (without the numbers). The iPhone 5 is generally better in the day, and the Xperia Z is generally better at night.
gotta go with the expieria. i like the wider shot and it seems to handle better in low light
Xperia Z makes pictures with best colours, but sometimes Z damages details in 100% corp.

I should say their both on par since each does something better than the other.
fantastic video !! Thanks :)

Xperia wins this one. What it loses in the daytime can be easily fixed later, while night shots are much harder to get right.
The is negligible difference between them, IP5 seems to be sharper while the XPZ seems to have better color representation. I would think that both can be adj for the desired results.
I can honestly say, I could not tell the difference during day but during night, Xperia Z's got it.

Day: 60/40 (iPhone5/xperia Z)
Night: 30/70 (iPhone5/xperia Z)
At day iPhone 5 has more sharpness and more vivid colours.
Both phones took great pictures. But in my opinion, Xperia Z slightly outperforms iPhone 5 in general. Well done, Sony!
Z seems sharper overall in daylight (though the autofocus doesn't seem as good as the iPhone 5 sometimes), and creams the iPhone 5 in the dark.
In general the dynamic range of the iPhone 5 slightly better, but my eyes may have been playing tricks on me because the results extremely close in terms of quality.
The iphone software make the cloud so blue that i ve never seen in my life o.O
In low light conditions, the xperia z o way better than the iphone but in day light the iPhone is more "precise" in details. In overall, the xperia z is better for me.
looks like the Xperia Z takes the cake in my eye.
It looks like the Xperia Z shows more colour from long range shots, and the IPhone 5 shows more detail up close
They both look great to me, although the Xperia Z had more shots where it looked better.
Well, not exactly. While underwater you cannot access the screen. What you can do is too record underwater, if you press record before you dip in. :)
Xperia z definitely wins but..... Considering its size and everything compare to Iphone 5 I was expecting more on its camera. Imagine if iphone 5 was as big as sony, they can probably come up with something better.... Then again they r more likely to stick with a compact design.
You Know
If you look at the pictures taken by Xperia Z and use BRAVIA engine 2 on the phone
It will Look much more vivid and saturated
the iphone has a littie better colors in day light but the z is cleaner nand sharper.as for the night shoots the z is mind blowing ,just anbelievable!
Iphone 5 was better in daylight, but xperia Z was better at night with neonlight. The iphone 5 did suck in more detail and had better color reproduction, though.
The Xperia Z seems to just take a more true picture. I'll find out for myself next week :)
Xperia z truly amazing... And I owned 1.
It can takes better images more than others device can't. :-D
Lowlight Sony easily wins but in daytime shots it was 50-50, sometimes Sony had the better shots and sometimes Apple had the better shots.
That's not how things work dude.
The Z camera is perfect for nighttime pictures , although not that much of a difference between the two cameras , in some cases the iPhone won , keep in mind it's 8mp going against 13 mp
It's a tough call, Both take great pictures, in general the saturation is better in the iphone, but the sharpness is
An advantabe for xperia z
What amazes me is your 100% crop of that harbour landscape - based on other reviews online, I was expecting the Xperia Z to look absolutely f*cking awful (excuse my French),... and it doesn't. What I would say is that the seed head shot at 2.20 is focused differently on the Z (I know you tried to focus the same - I get that): look at the top right edge on the Z - it's in focus and is crisp: the middle isn't. An issue with the focusing of the Z?
To me it seems about equal. It depended on the photo. Some iPhone photos looked better but some Z photos looked better.
One clear winner for my taste of images...... and it's not the fruity one! ;)
