in some conditions the 5s is better than the Z1, but in the last pictures the Z1 looks like it performs better. Summary : Both devices are awesome ! If you like IOS then go with Iphone, if you like Android then go with Z1, both devices have there advantages and disadvantages :)
I'm waiting to grab myself an Xperia Z1 when it comes out in Canada but I'm siding with the iPhone 5S for the stills. The iPhone 5S is more producing photos with the desired colour and sharpness that I like more than the Xperia Z1. And Blunty, great job on your creative shots.
Surprisingly I find the results spit out by the 5S more pleasing to the eye in general, can't quite narrow down the reason though. And, as usual, I must compliment your lovely shots.
Thanks for all your great efforts. You're always fun to watch and compare them fairly. It's a close match on some pics but I would pick the iPhone 5S. It's a same apple didn't go with a 2 micron size pixel and opted for a 1.5. Cheers
I personally think the iPhone 5s gives performs better with light and sharpness during bright, day- afternoon shots while the Z1 gives a better picture in low light (without flash) conditions. The thing about the Z1 is that the picture seems to have a softer image, while the IPhone was sharp and crisp except when it was at full zoom with distant objects. While closer objects at full zoom way surpassed the Z1.
the biggest thing i noticed was that the iphones photos had considerably more contrast where most of the z1 files where quiet flat looking all so the color rendition metering and sharpness over all seemed better on the iphone
The IPhone 5s seems to do a better job with shadows and highlights in almost every shot. Even details and colors look better with the IPhone. Impressive. Thanks for the comparison.
I'd choose the 5s because I prefer the exposure in most cases and find its photos generally more pleasant to look at. Really, it's not worth spending time deciding which is better. They're both good. Thanks Blunty
Nice demonstration of each phone's capabilities. I think if you want to do some photography with your mobile device you wouldn't be going wrong if you chose either of these two phones. In this case though, I would probably choose the Experia Z for all of it's other (non-photography related) benefits. I can't wait for my Verizon contract to end so I can get one!
I bought the Z1... A month now... Be honest with u it's really good on day light but it's blurry on dark. Very nice display... Battery is good... Speakers are not really good... Bit big for one hand.... But very lite... Waterproof... So many features.... I just loved it...
I'm planning on buying the Z2, so I hope by then that Sony has closed the gap, because in this comparo the iPhone thoroughly bested the Z1. Color and detail from the iPhone were superior in most of the shots. The Z1 did well in low light, but so did the iPhone.
I have z1 and I have to say the photos it takes are superb , but watching this clip through they are both great and both better than a lot of early 2013 phones, so anyone of these 2 is a winner!
Z1 did a better job in most cases, imo, but 5S is amaing too. I could notice the difference only because pics were arranged side by side. Normal consumer can't really go wrong with either. I liked the way this comparison was done. Thanks.
In my opinion, i would prefer Sony for its natural colours. Samsung and iPhone uses Sony's Exmor RS camera modules. But their image processors adds more hue and saturations to the images. And 20 mp works well with manual mode only. The superior auto mode takes pics with 8 mp which is better than 20mp. so if you dont know much about manual modes, dont use 20 mp coz it induces artifacts. the superior auto mode using 8mp is fabulous.
iPhone 5s was bested in a few images from what I saw, but overall I'd say the iPhone 5s is the winner here. I saw better color accuracy, and the images certainly looked a lot sharper, despite the lower 3264x2448 resolution photos. Thanks for the comparison… I've grown to not trust reviewers with their photos, because they really don't know what they're doing. ;) Nice to have this done in the hands of a photographer.
Overall, it is a matter of preference. The z1 produced brighter and warmer shots which make it better in low light. The 5s produced cooler shots which were better in high light environments. It is completely up to the user if they want better all round performance, or better performance on a specific field.
best example of "quality over quantity." The overall color depth, range and sharpness of iPhone's is better. The problem with 20MP is that you'll end up with higher image file sizes for not necessarily better photos.
Having just watched the video shoot-out I was surprised that the stills didn't follow the same results. In the video the Z1 reproduced reds better but here the iPhone did a better Red job. Like the video the iPhone handles high contrast scenes markedly better & overall I'd say the iPhone was a clear winner. However, both are great cameras & the Z1 seems to have a slightly greater depth of field and it does have 2MPs so will give a lot more detail in good light shots.
the 5s seems to expose slightly more, while the Z1 tends to appear better saturated, but in low light the 5s seems to have less noise and actually seems to look better at 100% crop
i know that. I'm an avid photographer. With that 20.7 megapixel sensor, it'll capture plenty of detail. its a 1 2/3 inch sensor, which definitely isnt small. actually, its not far off from a crop sensor DSLR sensor size if im not mistaken. Sony put a nice piece of glass over it as well from what ive read.
Definitely need to see a pixel binning comparison, in this mode the output resolution will be the same as the 5s. It seems like many of the Z1 photos are over exposed. My Xperia Z has this issue as well and I normally force -1/3 EV in Camera FV-5 to compensate. Its apparent that the iPhone has better light metering, though its hard to say if the actual dynamic range is better or whether its just a better software implementation.
Prefer colour reproduction, focusing and dynamic range of the iPhone, but can't deny the better resolution and cropping flexibility of the Z1. Would take the 5S simply because I don't do much cropping or image editing.
Looking back at some of the shots, looks like the Xperia Z1 aims for color accuracy while the iPhone artificially bumps up the saturation. Would be nice if there was a DSLR photo to use as a accuracy barometer.
Both very capable. The 5s tends to render colors on a warmer side making it pleasing. The z1 should be respected to the fact that it captures more, means bigger or closer 100% crop to scrutinize. That's an advantageous effort since color temp can always be corrected on the fly in my opinion. Again boils down to preference. Cheers! ;)
I think in general the 5s looks nicer. But in the right lighting the Z1 look very pretty. I think raw footage the 5s wins, but if the was some post editing done than it would be a lot closer. The macro shot on both were very good too :)
you have to be aware as well this video was probably before the firmware update for the z1, which got released today also for the ultra as well! added some tweaks to the camera app among other things! so the pictures if taken after that update would be even better then the ones taken above!
You don't have to shoot in full 20MP, it just gives you the option. If you're taking a picture with your friends, there's no reason to shoot in 20MP and you can change the settings. If you're shooting a picture of the city skyline, then 20MP is a good choice. I prefer the Z1's low light performance and it's colors are more neutral while the 5S's are more warm, but the 5S doesn't blow up whites as much.
To me Apple's iPhone 5s produces a much sharper image right out of camera. However Sony's Xperia Z1 produces better color reproduction. The iPhone's photos look over saturated and the highlights are blown out. The Z1 also seem to have better low light sensitivity. But the iPhone does a better job at keeping details in the shadows thanks to higher contrast. For the normal consumer, either one works. For those who want a picture they can work in post or print, the Z1 is probably the better choice.
I found the Z1 slightly ahead in some photos but far worse in most. While the iPhone 5s might not win all the time, it's the most consistent of the two in terms of results. In the end, consistency is what I care about in a point and shoot camera. It's a shame cause I'm an Android guy but I'm almost certainly going to buy an iPhone 5s cause mobile photography is becoming increasingly important to me as a father.
blunty in your own opinion since your the one shooting the pictures and photos, which one portraits the real color? in my opinion pixel wont matter if the quality and color suffers. which one would you choose?
When it comes down to it, the Z1 has more potential. The sensor of the I5S takes better photos in some conditions for now, but , most times. Apple uses lower end hardware and UberOptimised software to provide top tier results. Thus, the I5S has reached its limits. On the other side, the Z1 has Uber hardware and so-so software, but software is upgradable. Let's wait and see if Sony brings some new software on the table and then decide :) My vote goes 50/50. Both take awesome pics.
Based on what I saw, not just this video, the Z1 produces photos that are closer to reality while iPhone produces pictures with richer colours. I'm not photographer, but I think Z1 is the winner in terms of photography as it reproduces what our eyes were seeing. iPhone on the other hand, produces more appealing photos due to its over saturation etc. hence 'looks better'. I personally think iphone's photos are nicer, but I would not say its camera is better, for the reason I stated above.
I think it's because they're sharper. More MP just adds more blur unless you have a big ass sensor and glass to back it up. Even the high end DSLR's have about as many MP as the Z1 yet it's obvious which of the two take the superior images. You need to go to medium format to beat the MP count on some phones like the Lumia's.
5s, it has fuller more crisp color, and the quality difference if barely noticeable as both shoot in HD. Sure HD is good but when it comes to both cameras being of the High Def persuasion it is the color that really stands out.
At this point it will all come down to how much can you pull from the images and since the Sony has 20MP you can crop or zoom as much as you want and it'll still retain detail while you can't really do as much to the iPhone's 8MP.
Could you please redo the test while shooting in 8Mp instead with the Z1. 20Mp is sadly nothing to write home about whereas Z1 in 8Mp is considerably better. Give it a go Blunty!
I think again the Xperia Z has the better pictures when it comes to colour. But it again has troubles with direct sunligt. The iPhone 5s showed this problem only in one picture. The sunlighttroubles in Z1 is easy fixed with use of the setting. But dont know why it so tough for Xperia S to take pictures and video on places when the sun shines really bright. It actually tends to take batter pictures on automatic mode in cloudy days. :-) But the coulours is more true, and that important I think.
Based upon those images I would choose the iPhone 5s. For your everyday shooter the images worked more consistently in all lighting conditions. However and it is a big however, I have used many android phones and I know Sony are big on HDR and will most likely have a HDR mode. This would negate my previous iPhone preference, especially combined with the superior resolution and image tone. That's just me, I predict the average user will prefer the way the 5s shoots
iPhone 5S destroys the Z1 (in terms of camera). Which is a shame because I am buying the Xperia. Let's hope Sony has more camera firmware updates coming.
the Sony (because of the higher megapixels) had quite a lot of noise in the lower light images but there is more room to crop in the brighter images for the Sony. the Iphone also pumped up the contrast a little bit to much for most of the images ( of course for the people who don't bother to edit there photos) and the Sony seemed to have more dynamic range. i would go for the sony because i like the 20 megapixel sensor and the flater image.
The 5S has great lighting and detail, images are sharper, natural, and all around better. Sony did capture a few photos better. it handles the light very well. iPhone 5S is a clear winner.
No significant differences, except iPhone does a little bit better at metering. What's amazing about this is that these images are all amazing and they all come from smartphones!
No doubt the iPhone 5S is overall the best camera phone. But the Z1 handles the sunlight a little better when straight against the camera lens. But again, here we see a perfect example that the overall quality of the camera is more important than the number of mega pixels! Ihone 5S is the winner!
I'm also in the opinion that the 5s photos looks better, more resolution doesn't mean better quality. But even if the 5s is the winner (for me), both are pretty nice everyday camera :)
iPhone wins hands down, lens is sharper with better coating creating less flare and sensor is also better in pretty much anything, apart from resolution. But personally I use Galaxy note with 8mpx and never found myself in need for more pixels, on the other hand, I always wanted better dynamic range and low-light performance, so thumbs up apple for camera in 5s)
Honestly speaking i was hoping and praying that Z1's camera turns out to be better because today i decided to ditch my Iphone 5 for Z1 , but unfortunately what i see from these pictures 5s surely produces better pictures . hope it is just because of the software which should get updated soon. Will still go ahead and buy Z1 anyways today later in the evening. Cheers
i5s hands down. Overall, best contrast, best dynamic range and less need to further edit. Shame you can't do a comparo with i5s and GS4 or GN3... onwards.
- 5s sensor have fuller color than Z1 (0:32, 2:52) & brighter (0:28, 1:37, 3:03) - 5s uses auto HDR (whereas Z1 looks natural). It is most useful with direct sunlight & sky shot, which brings richer color with higher contrast (2:12 - man jacket) and in doing so some details were lost (2:03 - shadow). 5s HDR "auto" mess up (1:13, 2:38, 2:59) - Z1 have higher oversampling ability over 5s. 1:22 - Z1 have higher sharpening noise 2:47 (5s have higher ISO, but they use HDR post processing)
Some of you say that Z1 is better in low light scenery, I'd say the opposite, in daylight Z1 looks better for me, but if it gets just a little bit darker 5s beats it to the ground. But again that's only my personal opinion.
I prefer the 5S, do to it handling noise a little better in lowlight, Sony's 20mpx sensor with its extra detail would be nice, but lowlight performance would be more useful ..personally speaking.
Apparently the 8 megapixel mode on the Z1 gives better pictures as it does pixel binning or some such thing. The pictures in this clip are too close to call. In some pictures the iPhone seems to have too much contrast, and dark areas look too black. Details on the 100% crop look better on the iPhone.
Sony is a better phone overall, iphone with it's new "android style" upgraded functions/OS isn't enough for me to change. Beside that, the waterproof function is a very nice feature, but hey, I bought the sony tx5 after seeing your video, sold it and now have the tx20, maybe I'm a sony addicted when we're talking about cameras :)
I'd have to say in all honesty both did exceptionally well. iPhone took some shots that looked better than Z1 and Z1 took better shots then the iPhone.
The first half of the video shows the i5 winning, then it wavered a bit, then seemingly back too i5. I noticed tho, that Z1 compensates having more detail by generally brighter contrast photos in all pictures. If the setting could be adjusted on the Z1 to decrease the overall brightness, it would win cuz it allows a wider angle and a deeper crop. So no real winner to me. In terms of video, I saw the Burberry fashion show all shot in i5, and you'll see some distortions in the crowd near the end.
Think it's fair to say both devices have awesome Cameras there's just no two ways about it, many shots were better on the Z1, many shots were better on the iPhone, more on the iPhone to be honest, although the Z1 clearly tackles low light better
Bummer, I just upgraded to the Z1 and then saw this video. Personally I preferred the iPhone pics. Overall exposure, colours and sometimes sharpness seemed better. On paper the Z1 looks a beast (hence why I ordered it) but in practice it's so so.
the crops look better on the z1. 5s do take warmer shots. wonder if the shots were taken on default settings. normally you could adjust exposure, iso and focus on an android cam. haven't tried an iphone but couldnt do much on ipad.
But that is because its not just mega pixels that make the difference, the light taken in by the aperture and the lenses make a bigger difference at this point because tbh anything above 8MP is unnecessary. Its like with the 20+MP phones theres no point because the screen res is so low in comparison
I phone software enhancement = good for tags and Facebook uploading. Z1 more realistic and powerful = better option for smart phone photography and editing specially with the extra mega pixels.
They're head to head (: sometimes z1 wins and sometimes iPhone 5S but what irks me is look at that overdoing the noise reduction on z1 @ 2:50 .. That's bad in low light.
The fact you have to do that to make it look as good as the 5s is proof enough that the 5s is better. This is a phone camera, a point and shoot. If you need to fiddle with it to get good shots then it's kind of failed at that task. If you want to fiddle then you're better off using a DSLR or something instead.
The iphone's seem to have a nicer smoother look about them, however i cant quite put my finger on what it is. They are slightly more saturated in various occasions, and i think that might give it the edge on unedited photos. They also seem to slightly more accurately exposed. However, if you actually went through an editing process, the z's photos probably give you more to work with, due to higher megapixel count, although the 100% crop looks almost always terrible. iPhone takes it home for me.
In *some* of the zoomed out shots the difference is negligible, but at 2:27 100% crop, it's evident which is the winner, color rendition is better too, again some of the time. 20+mpx... what's the point when it's not usable at full resolution?
in some conditions the 5s is better than the Z1, but in the last pictures the Z1 looks like it performs better.
Summary : Both devices are awesome ! If you like IOS then go with Iphone, if you like Android then go with Z1, both devices have there advantages and disadvantages :)

Dude, if you wanna take photos to videos with an iPhone there's like a dozen different waterproof cases you can choose from.

Nice to have this done in the hands of a photographer.
The 5s had better contrast and saturation but the Z1 handled lighting a lot better as well as being ever so slightly more clear.
I'll assume you meant better defined, not better defiled. I hope so anyway.
Overall, it is a matter of preference. The z1 produced brighter and warmer shots which make it better in low light. The 5s produced cooler shots which were better in high light environments. iPhone 5S destroys the Z1 (in terms of camera). Which is a shame because I am buying the Xperia. Let's hope Sony has more camera firmware updates coming.
Heh, try taking a photo underwater with the iphone ;)
the Sony (because of the higher megapixels) had quite a lot of noise in the lower light images but there is more room to crop in the brighter images for the Sony. the Iphone also pumped up the contrast a little bit to much for most of the images ( of course for the people who don't bother to edit there photos) and the Sony seemed to have more dynamic range. i would go for the sony because i like the 20 megapixel sensor and the flater image.
Pretty evenly matched, although iPhone seems to perform better in low light. Details are also good.

No significant differences, except iPhone does a little bit better at metering. What's amazing about this is that these images are all amazing and they all come from smartphones!
Xperia seems to have better range of colors the camera picks up and adapts to contrasts better. Did you check the original image bit depth on them?
Z1 oviously
No doubt the iPhone 5S is overall the best camera phone. But the Z1 handles the sunlight a little better when straight against the camera lens. But again, here we see a perfect example that the overall quality of the camera is more important than the number of mega pixels!
Ihone 5S is the winner!
It´s very dissicult to decide wich camera is the best. They both shoot very good quality pictures!!
SONY xperia Z1 colors seem to be more natural but in many situations, both cameras took same pictures. Both are great !
Wonder how will the Z1's pixel-binned 8mp mode compare?
Honestly speaking i was hoping and praying that Z1's camera turns out to be better because today i decided to ditch my Iphone 5 for Z1 , but unfortunately what i see from these pictures 5s surely produces better pictures . hope it is just because of the software which should get updated soon. Will still go ahead and buy Z1 anyways today later in the evening. Cheers
both are equally good in most situations but the iphone's sensor has an upper hand when the situation demands higher dynamic range.
i5s hands down. Overall, best contrast, best dynamic range and less need to further edit.
Shame you can't do a comparo with i5s and GS4 or GN3... onwards.
wow xperia z1 ambient occlusion is more way cool.
Love the Z1 but the iPhone 5S beats it on IQ. Has better dynamic range (in most cases) and better colors. But that 20.7mp sensor is definitely a beast
- 5s sensor have fuller color than Z1 (0:32, 2:52) & brighter (0:28, 1:37, 3:03)
- 5s uses auto HDR (whereas Z1 looks natural). It is most useful with direct sunlight & sky shot, which brings richer color with higher contrast (2:12 - man jacket) and in doing so some details were lost (2:03 - shadow). 5s HDR "auto" mess up (1:13, 2:38, 2:59)
- Z1 have higher oversampling ability over 5s. 1:22
- Z1 have higher sharpening noise 2:47 (5s have higher ISO, but they use HDR post processing)
Some of you say that Z1 is better in low light scenery, I'd say the opposite, in daylight Z1 looks better for me, but if it gets just a little bit darker 5s beats it to the ground. But again that's only my personal opinion.
I agree, the Z1 looks nice in right lighting, but I think overall, I like the iphone a little better. Both are very good though!
The iPhone retains more detail in the highlights and has more natural colours, by the looks of things. Both very impressive, though.
Sony Xperia Z1
Sony is a better phone overall, iphone with it's new "android style" upgraded functions/OS isn't enough for me to change. Beside that, the waterproof function is a very nice feature, but hey, I bought the sony tx5 after seeing your video, sold it and now have the tx20, maybe I'm a sony addicted when we're talking about cameras :)
The Z1 convinced me..so I'll go for it!
How can the Z1s photos be more blurry than the iphone 5s? :oo
because the photos were shot in superior auto mode in 8mp, not the 20mp manual mode
Bummer, I just upgraded to the Z1 and then saw this video. Personally I preferred the iPhone pics. Overall exposure, colours and sometimes sharpness seemed better. On paper the Z1 looks a beast (hence why I ordered it) but in practice it's so so.
i would go with the z1 for my own personal preference it seems to pick up less light distortion from direct sun light
@CertifiedZeldafan how would that thing with the better lens work. The phone has already been manufactured.
I'd like to see how the Nexus 5 compare in same shots...
Easy iPhone 5s , unfortunately still looking for a good android camera phone :(
the crops look better on the z1. 5s do take warmer shots. wonder if the shots were taken on default settings. normally you could adjust exposure, iso and focus on an android cam. haven't tried an iphone but couldnt do much on ipad.
They both look equally as good in there own ways.
To me, having an inexpert eye shall I say?, this is the perfect example of "MP aren't everything".
In *some* of the zoomed out shots the difference is negligible, but at 2:27 100% crop, it's evident which is the winner, color rendition is better too, again some of the time.
20+mpx... what's the point when it's not usable at full resolution?
Is there any other android or iOS smartphone that has a better camera than the iPhone 5s? That´s 4.5" or smaller?
They were both good :) I hope to get the z1 soon for the underwaterness :)
