As a videographer, Vlogger, and a passionate photographer the quality of a camera weighs heavily on my buying decisions when it coms to my phone. I like to know even if I've nothing else to hand, my camera-phone can serve as a more than sufficient camera for stills and video for work, art or play. I am not alone in this I assure you.
At a guess I'd say that Sony's using stabilisation that monitors movement within the frame rather than actual movement of the hardware using the motion sensors... as you saw, this can lead to errors when large objects move into and out of an otherwise static shot. The iPhone uses the motions sensors to calculate the stabilisation corrections, and so doesn't get tricked.
I must admit I barely compliment video's on UA-cam and especially review/comparison video because in my opinion 99% are bad, misleading, bias etc. Tough on this comparison video I must give you props, nicely done, no gibberish talking when not needed and let people decide for themselves which one is better. I do have one question, which of the 2 cameras comes closest to real world colors (taken you have a decent monitor/screen to view it on of course)?
I am supposedly on "the list" to get a HTC one review unit sometime soon, I assure you I'll be putting their ridiculously named "ultrapixel" camera to the test good and proper.
Die hard sony fan. But here gotta agree apple survives the shootout. The auto-stabilization and auto-focus of apple is incomparable. Though in low light scenes, Z wins. .Thnx for this awesome video. Background music is classsi.
Great video Blunty, I personally believe the Xperia Z has the better camera by far. One question I have though, Does the Z have the ability to do Auto-Focus Lock?
So from what I can tell, the Iphone is much sharper, shows more detail. But it suffers a lot when things start to move. Also, the Colors on the Xperia Z looked a tad better to me, especially in low light conditions. The stabilisation errors in the elevator were hilarious, hope they push a patch for that sometime soon. Considering I mostly take pictures with my phone, I'd want the apple camera - but I really don't want an iphone. Great work, Blunty. Professional as always.
Thank You for This video... now i will surely go for Xperia Z... i was damn confused between Iphone 5 and Xperia Z... but being an Engineer + photographer Display and Camera is much more important for me.... Sony Rocks....!!! i am Proud Owner of Sony's first Android Smartphone Xperia x10i, and now Xperia Z it is....!!!
That was so close but then at the end of the video the Sony pulled slightly ahead. Currently I own an iPhone 5 but whatever flagship comes next after the Xperia Z is the next phone I'll buy. It's a great review this, good job!
I think what's important to realise here too is that these are default settings. I've seen lots oftalk about the xperia's camera and the different modes it can shoot including hdr 1080p video so I think I would actually bank on the xperia being the best overall
Both fantastic but I think the iPhone might just have the edge in most of the scenes. It's a shame the stabilisation was a little jerky on the Xperia although that's nothing a small software update couldn't fix. I was also quite impressed by the iPhones stabilisation actually, I didn't realise quite how steady it is. Awesome video! Subscribed.
You really know what your doing. This is how I would have done it myself;) My opinion is the Xperia Z is little bit better because when you watch these in fullscreen: 1:56 The colours are vivid but kind of natural in the same way 3:23 Same deal here, Looks more natural 5:08 Xperia Z had more vivid colours while iPhone had like a bright filter Maybe the audio on iPhone was a little bit better, But I could hear more on the Xperia Z but not too jerky;) Great video anyway, Want to see more.
Blunty, would you personally advise getting the Xperia Z judging by the camera preformance? I`ve been using Xperia Neo for two years and I still think the 8mp camera in the Neo is superb, even better than IP4s (admitted by an IP 4s owner), but time to get new one. I am concerned about the continuing autofocusing on Z, feels like there is something wrong. Would Z be a good deal or should I wait for HTC One? Not looking at Galaxy S4, hate the plastic. Would much appreciate your thoughts! Thanks
I did not choose. The Xperia review units were all sealed within black gift-boxes with no markings or indication of colour. At least it's a nice shade of purple... could've been worse I guess ;)
I think sony has more dynamic range...but would someone buy a phone for it camera? I don't know...I wouldn't... thank you for the effort...you're awesome
Coming from an apple kinda guy, I'd have to say the Experia Z is sharper with better image quality. Hope you do the vid of the stills. Keep up the good work Blunty! Martin, Glasgow, Scotland.
From a puny Nexus 7 perspective, the two cameras seem nearly on par with how well they can capture video. When I was straining for differences, the Xperia had smoother transitions with white balance, and maybe a kind of a light tan shade overall whereas the iPhone is pure vibrant white.
Definitely want to see the stills. The Z looked nicer during low light capture but sharpness suffered during the daytime where the iPhone clearly came out ahead which better exposure for most part. I wanted the Z but now I'm not sure.
Coming from a Sony fanboy (like, almost every tech I own is from Sony) I really think the iPhone 5 did better in these particular situations. The camera on the Xperia Z however is fine enough on it's own, if you ask me. It's nothing to write home about, but it gets the job done.
You are right about colors, contrast and it also choose better settings (Exposure etc) - but - the iPhone is sharper and have better details, look at the stones for example. The Xperia Z stabilizer issues are annoying! (I'm a Sony fan, and, an iPhone hater so, this is sad for me)
I'm impressed how well the iPhone holds up. Head to head to a competitor with loads of know-how in the digital camera field. In the end the Sony seems to be a tiny bit ahead quality wise, but the stabilization of the iPhone makes it the winner for me.
Are you able to do an xperia one with the stabilization and HDR turned off? It seems like the Z phone is trying to compensate for fast moving objects, or the regular shaky handheld user.
The video on the iPhone 5 does look sharper, but at the same time I think the colors look a little better on the Z. If not for the stabilization errors on the Z I'd lean towards that. The stabilization seems really good (for a phone) when it's working like it should. It's definitely a very tough choice.
Great effort dude, thx a lot. Lucky that you got a xperia z in Australia....I'm waiting for my order....can you also plz upload the pics, once again thx a lot
I honestly wasn't expecting it to be this close - I'm dreading the Xperia Z camera,.... And I'm getting one! It was swings and roundabouts throughout; one shot would be better on the iPhone, another would be better on the Sony (generally the low light, I thought). Sound is better on the Xperia, the iPhone was easily the sharper of the two (damn it, Sony, what's with your stupidly heavy handed compression?!!!). At various points I preferred the color and white balance on the Z.
It's hard to say which is better when both camera's perform extremely well. One phone does 1 thing better than the other and vise versa. I'd be happy with either.
The iPhone 5, without a doubt. Constantly getting better detail, color, stabilization, and sound. But I will give the Xperia the video encoding; the iPhone seemed to stutter ever so slightly in some conditions. But with said iPhone, I always got the better sense of what it was like to actually be there. Good thing I have the iPod 5G.
The Z has better colour representation but suffers from stabilization issues, it seemed a bit jittery but the trade off is you get more detail with every shot.
I'd choose Sony Xperia Z over iPhone 5, but I personally prefer iPhone 5's photo and video. Yes I know Sony made Apple's camera sensor, but I'm an end user so all I care about is the end result of the photos and videos. I prefer yellow white balance (iPhone 5) over purple white balance (Xperia Z), and I prefer a little bit saturated pictures because it helps to make the picture more lively.
Great vid man.. I would like to see Xperia Z vs HTC One, I think these two are the most promising phones of the year.. because they say HTC One offers good cam from 4mp (300% take away from a 4mp they say).. thanks man..
This is a pretty close match up. I'm not sure I could declare a particular camera a winner. Close up the iPhone seems to display more detail. The Z looks like it has better low light performance. Which one would I take? Maybe the Z. I think some times the colours may have been exaggerated almost on the iPhone. Like in one shot of the dreary cloudy sky in the iPhone video it was still looking blue while the Z captured greys. I guess only Blunty could say which one captured the true scene there.
Very similar! Although I think the iPhone had slightly more vibrant colours personally. One thing apple seems to have almost perfected (on a smartphone level) is the cameras! The 720p front camera handled itself very well for what it was!
Any phone camera is going to be noisy in low light not only due to sensor size but all the processing and built in noise reduction that makes it blurry. Even the Lumia 920 had some. That said the XPZ is a great step up from what many Android phones offer for photos and video.
The Xperia Z definitely is pretty similar, but the iPhone seems to handle color better in most situations. There were a couple scenes where the Xperia handled the scene more naturally while the iPhone's video was more blue. I'd have to say that the iPhone was overall more sharper and the colors were more accurate for the most part, but not much different to warrant a slap on the wrist or anything to the Xperia. All in all, both seemed to do a good job.
the iPhone is definitely pulling in more detail. The Xperia Z isn't too far behind but could use a sharpening filter. And a BIG yes for a video comparing still imaging performance! Need the opinion/testing of a real photographer, that would be brilliant
Im quite surprised at how much the footage shakes and hunts around for a focus on the Sony, I thought they were really good with anti-shake. Or wasn't it on by default? Nice video though, these side by side comparisons are really handy.
I'm not much of a city person, but have you had any weird runnins with people that had questions about your shooting random stuff, and or people that feel that you are filming them?
I actually think the iPhone won here. More natural white balance in about 6/7 cases, and deeper blacks where appropriate. Also the image stabilization is a noticably better in the shake footage. Thanks for the video!
I have the Xperia Z and the camera on it is lovely, the best phone Iv'e ever had and upgraded from the iphone. In my opinion the Xperia Z is just an all round better phone. I love it.
Each one did better than the other on some shots. With what I do, being able to catch motion (like the car driving by) is most important, so this one goes to the sony in my book.
Does the Xperia Z have the benefit of its HDR mode in this shootout? That would make a difference in some of these shots. As it stands the iPhone is more pleasant to my eye. By the by, did the iPhone 5 camera prove to be any more capable than that of the 4S?
It looks like the XZ has some pretty astonishing stabilisation errors throughout, even when the footage is still. Any word on whether Sony will fix this prior to release Blunty?
Xperia z has a really good night-time shoot, and dull textures are nice aswell. iPhone5 has an amazing pictue clarity with good sunlight and shiny textures, not to mention stability on the iPhone5 camera is as good as it gets.
Very impressed with the iPhone 5, much better than most android phones. However, I do prefer the Xperia Z more with its natural colors. And with HDR video technology, Sony has the upper edge.
can u tell me if xperia s or iphone 5 is better in camera.i know higher count doesnt matter so asking u.Thank you.i own a xperia s btw and very happy with it
Xperia was warmer, iPhone cooler. Personal preference there but I prefer cooler. Xperia has a slightly sharper image at times but more often it felt over exposed to me. The bright areas seemed to want to blow out. Image stabilization was superior, by far, on the iPhone. Audio sounded better on the Z..at least in a clean sound environment. All in all, as far as video goes, I'd still give it to the iPhone. I haven't looked at the stills though.
They both look fantastic. But I'd give the slight edge to the Z, and I do mean slight. The colors just seem slightly better, and the low light is brighter. But overall, they both look very Sony-ish. Had a TX100 for awhile, and that's what the iphone5's picture reminds me of.
The xperia Z is definitely a winner here. The color reproduction is fantastic. It's more realistic. It's got better exposure levels. And you can actually see what I am talking about in the scene with the red bus. But I do have to say that the iPhone is sharper. And the xperia seems to produce slightly more noise.
after watching this on 1080p . in my opinion, at 2:37 iph5 is video is sharper on the green leaves, while xpZ is sharper on the cactus . 2:45 - 2:46 iph5 is constant focus while xpz is constantly focusing. 2:52 iph5 is sharper image while xpZ is soft tone.
At certain conditions the colors on the iphone look more vibrant but the motion looks smoother on the Z. I rather the Z's camera due it's 13mp and's more detailed, also, can be used underwater. I'd like to have it but I'm still refusing to buy a giant flat phone...
Sony Xperia Z also recommend to watch this video. Because of using the Sony Bravia Engine 2. Images corrupted the computer environment, the Sony Xperia Z looks more beautiful. :) I LOVE XPERİA Z.
Xperia Z wins it; Much better in low light (Exmor RS is REALLY good), much more detail in the image (see the pavement grain, only visible in the Xperia shots). Xperia has better white balance too. The only thing it freaked out was the elevator stabilization test (which clearly is not a usual scenario), I would have liked to see the stabilization in a more realistic test.
They're really close, but to me it looks like the iphone pulls slightly ahead, though it's a really minor difference overall. The Xperia Z seems to pick up more range as far as audio goes, which I feel gets overlooked very often from other manufacturers. The iPhone is still above average in this aspect.
The Xperia seems to have a much much wider field of view, which I really love, however I don't know if it was a hardware problem on it or if something was wrong while shooting but the iPhone 5 seems considerably smoother in non moving shots....
It seems like the lens is really weak on the Xperia Z. The Iphone 5 is capturing at 720p and yet it still seems way sharper than the Xperia Z. It's most noticeable on the shot of the padlock. There also seems to be some issues with auto-focus jittering in the Xperia Z10 beyond just the image stabilization errors.
1:44 Notice the shaking in the Xperia Z. Nobody will ask you which phone was used to take the video. And for the most part, they are both good camera phones. But while watching the video, it hurts my eye when I see a video taken with the Xperia Z, because it shakes quite a lot giving me a disturbing feel. The shaking on the iPhone is a smoother transition rather than "bumpy" as is on the Xperia Z. I would rather stick with the iPhone 5 with better video stabilization and poorer video quality.
It is clear that the iPhone 5 is better at capturing video at default setting, However it would be interesting to see the HDR footage that Sony claims the Xperia Z can take. Possibly a comparison of iPhone 5 and Xperia Z HDR video.
the only shot that looked better on the iphone was the Macro, I'll give them that, but the sony definitely had better color and excellent Frame-rate in comparison. Notice the traffic getting blurry on the iphone? Also seems the iphone has more compression artifiacts, seen in the first golf grass shots. Thanks Blunty!
In bright conditions, the iPhone 5 has a slight edge, whereas the framrate drop is noticeable in dark conditions, so there the Xperia Z has an edge, As for the sound, if you like somewhat muffled sound, the iPhone 5 is your choice, I however prefere clear sound so I would pick the Xperia Z.
Both of them are not that bad, but i prefer the Sony Xperia Z :)
I had to watch three times before voting for Xperia Z.
Thanks for doing this, Blunty. Appreciate it.
At a guess I'd say that Sony's using stabilisation that monitors movement within the frame rather than actual movement of the hardware using the motion sensors... as you saw, this can lead to errors when large objects move into and out of an otherwise static shot.

Please watch the video fully before asking questions.
I am supposedly on "the list" to get a HTC one review unit sometime soon, I assure you I'll be putting their ridiculously named "ultrapixel" camera to the test good and proper.
best comparison ive watched lately. good job
I love your camera comparisons Blunty!
Correct, the iPhone 5 uses an 8MP sony sensor, but the rest of the image chain, including the lens design, is from Apple.
best smartphone camera test on youtube
verry well done

Die hard sony fan. But here gotta agree apple survives the shootout. The auto-stabilization and auto-focus of apple is incomparable. Though in low light scenes, Z wins. .Thnx for this awesome video. Background music is classsi.
Great video Blunty, I personally believe the Xperia Z has the better camera by far. One question I have though, Does the Z have the ability to do Auto-Focus Lock?
yea, if u hold down the shutter
Thanks Kristoffer Varas, I was curious as it can make a lot of difference when recording video on your phone.

I cannot tell which is better. They seem to each have advantages.
Thanks for this Blunty.
Hi, Blunty, I wonder if the sony videos were shot in HDR a feature that should stand out the sony from the Iphone. Did you record in HDR?
Nice job!

thank you for the effort...you're awesome
Coming from an apple kinda guy, I'd have to say the Experia Z is sharper with better image quality. Hope you do the vid of the stills. Keep up the good work Blunty! Martin, Glasgow, Scotland.
Good comparison and interesting results. iPhone's camera has better visuals but the audio quality is SO MUCH better in the Xperia Z.
From a puny Nexus 7 perspective, the two cameras seem nearly on par with how well they can capture video. When I was straining for differences, the Xperia had smoother transitions with white balance, and maybe a kind of a light tan shade overall whereas the iPhone is pure vibrant white.
What about the audio clip u used, was it from one of the phone? if so which one? or did you use audio from an external source?
Definitely want to see the stills. The Z looked nicer during low light capture but sharpness suffered during the daytime where the iPhone clearly came out ahead which better exposure for most part. I wanted the Z but now I'm not sure.

amazing video, thank god i saw this video, changed my mind about getting the xperia...
blunty did you try hdr video yet?
Is it what is it cracked up to be?
I have to say, very nice shooting. Is it in Hong Kong ?
It would be nice to see how much you can get in post... How much room there is for color correction etc. thanks
Hi Blunty,
Thanks for making this comparison review video. I'm self Motoroa defy plus and Xperia Z user. I like both phones but Iphone makes better!!
The video on the iPhone 5 does look sharper, but at the same time I think the colors look a little better on the Z.
If not for the stabilization errors on the Z I'd lean towards that.
The stabilization seems really good (for a phone) when it's working like it should.
It's definitely a very tough choice.
My thoughts exactly, except yeah, the back camera on the iPhone does shoot 1080p too, like Blunty said.
Great effort dude, thx a lot. Lucky that you got a xperia z in Australia....I'm waiting for my order....can you also plz upload the pics, once again thx a lot
have you used the HDR Video(which is the main hardware improvement over the iphone 5) on Xperia Z?
I've noticed the stabilization errors on the Xperia TX too, if a large object traverses the screen, the camera will track it instead
I honestly wasn't expecting it to be this close - I'm dreading the Xperia Z camera,.... And I'm getting one! I actually think the iPhone won here. More natural white balance in about 6/7 cases, and deeper blacks where appropriate. Also the image stabilization is a noticably better in the shake footage. Thanks for the video!
thank u blunty , can u unploud the pictures test too ?
very soothing music really... superb job by allowing to play the music in the background till the end.. by the way, I vote xperia Z :)
I have the Xperia Z and the camera on it is lovely, the best phone Iv'e ever had and upgraded from the iphone.
In my opinion the Xperia Z is just an all round better phone. I love it.
The Audio is so much cleaner & clearer as well.
Always been interested in a soot out between these two.
Each one did better than the other on some shots. With what I do, being able to catch motion (like the car driving by) is most important, so this one goes to the sony in my book.

Blunty3000 what is your opinion? iPhone 5 or Xperia Z ?
Is this a pre production camera that needs a firmware update?? I have one on order at amazon uk I'm about to press the cancel button!!

The only thing it freaked out was the elevator stabilization test (which clearly is not a usual scenario), I would have liked to see the stabilization in a more realistic test.
how did you get experia z? its not even in the market yet
It was a close match-up. Iphone 5 handled color saturation, white balance, sound and sometimes even detail in dark areas better.
I can't say I've ever seen IS errors quite like the Xperia before, I learnt something new :)
I would like to see the Xperia Z HDR video mode in action as well. That could be a good comparison of this new feature.
In bright conditions, the iPhone 5 has a slight edge, whereas the framrate drop is noticeable in dark conditions, so there the Xperia Z has an edge,
As for the sound, if you like somewhat muffled sound, the iPhone 5 is your choice, I however prefere clear sound so I would pick the Xperia Z.
Image stabilization on iPhone is amazing! Look how shaky Xperia Z is compared to the iPhone 5, even thought they are moving the same way!
sorry, can i know how to set the camera during night? cause my xperia Z seems to have 'noise' on the screen ...tq
