I remember when I was a kid in the ‘70s, there was one guy in my neighborhood that had a Pantera. Every time he would take it out for a drive I would stop what I was doing just to watch him drive it out and up the street. One of the best sounding and looking cars in history.

Loved this.👍 I recall an article calling this an “affordable exotic.” I like the idea of Euro-exotic styling with a solid American V8. Another interesting one is the Jensen Interceptor Mark III with Ferguson type 4WD and a big Moper V8.
There was a Pantera for sale new at our local Lincoln-Mercury dealer which was there for nearly 2 years; apparently their salesmen had no idea how to market a sports car. Eventually, it was priced at a giveaway price (which admittedly was still not cheap). I lobbied to get my dad to buy it but failed. Oh, well! Same dealership also a couple years later had a used 1963 Corvette coupe. My dad liked it but not with "that bar across the window". I won't blow your mind by telling you how little they were asking for it!
I absolutely love these. I am also a big fan of the Ford 351C (I had one in a '72 Cougar). In the late 70's a really nice one of these was for sale locally for $6,000. I only had $3,000 so I asked my best friend if he wanted to go in halves. He said no, we would probably just wrap it around a tree and he had a point. He had a reputation for drinking and really wailing the tar out of cars. He blew the engine in our neighbor's 1970 GTO. By the time I could afford $6,000 these had appreciated too much. I'd take the Pantera in the first scenario and wow, the second one is super hard for me but I'd have to go with the Countach. I love the styling of the Dino too.

They had a lot of build quality, body and electrical problems when new. But...where are the outside rearview mirrors? And I'll take the Pantera (in yellow) in both cases.
Hi Jay! The Pantera always had a pretty slick design to me. There was one here in town for years, a white one. One thing that has to be remembered is, even though the Pantera had a pretty nice, reliable 351C Ford engine, it is an Italian car. And they have their quirks, just like any other Italian car. Hence the weird pedal arrangement, etc. WYR's: #1 Porsche 911. #2 Dino! Those were nifty little cars with that V-6.

Still one of my favorite cars of all time. First one I ever noticed as a young'un was regularly parked in my neighborhood in the early 1980s, and even back then you didn't see them every day. It was yellow-orange (think cheddar cheese.) Very appropriately for that era, it was usually parked by a small pinball/video arcade that was actually a pretty short-lived business and is long since gone. A renowned local pizzeria expanded and took over the space after a Mexican restaurant there closed down. But when I walk or drive by that spot, I can still picture the Pantera.
Thanks Jay ford really didn’t market the pantera very much and kind of left it hanging out there like it was a red headed step child so far the WYR I’ll take one and then I’ll choose the Dino because I love the lines on it and the v-6 , thanks again for another great video of cars from days gone by
Beautiful! An excellent video as usual. I would like to say, respectfully, that pronunciation is very important. It speaks to your professionalism. It's another part of the job of research, to honour someone's name, spelling and titles. I would honour you the same way when I speak of your channel or name.
I researched how to say their names and everybody says a different even when you plug it in the Google it says something totally different than how a lot of people said it on UA-cam so that’s why I put the disclaimer in the front because I wasn’t sure what the correct pronunciations were
I'd stick with the Pantera, with it's more convention drivetrain. Meaning it's cheaper to keep on the road. The Pantera was manufactured for a few years after Ford stopped selling it. I didn't realize this for many years until a customer showed me his 1978 Pantera. I was expecting it to have a 351 V8, but it had a Ford 400M V8. This wasn't the right move, in my opinion. The Cleveland designation ended in 1974,replaced with the "M" series. From 1975-on, it was the 351M. It still had the Cleveland heads as did the 400M. The main difference between the Cleveland and the "M" was the bolt pattern on the back of the block. The Cleveland had the same bolt pattern as the 302 V8 and the "M" had the Ford same bolt pattern as the "big block" 385 series as did the 300 c.i. inline 6. A cool looking car, for sure, when I saw the first one in 1971 at a Ford dealer. They let me sit in it, but a stocky guy like me didn't fit in the seats. It was like sitting on rails. Then there were my size 10 1/2-EE feet(remember way back when you could get shoes which actually fit?) . They just didn't fit either. Though more difficult to get in and out of, a Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing fit me better.
Congratulations on almost three years with the video channel. channel might be tiny compared to the big ones, but mighty in straight educational to the point content, keep up the great work. That Pantera looks awful tight, I'd probably get stuck even at 5' 9" just getting my legs in and out around the wheelwell hump, if you was stuck in that one you wouldn't make it in a Lotus Europa of that same era, that car was hard for me to get in and out, but the Lotus would be first pick, second, the Lamborghini,
Lotus Europa is a really tiny car I’ve been in one Thank you so much for all of the positive vibes. I really appreciate everything that you guys bring to this community. It really means a lot to me. I know this channel isn’t huge yet but I have a feeling it will get there one day. The biggest thing for me is I never want this channel to lose what we have. Now we have a community that I’m very much a part of. I can’t believe in September. It will be three gears. That’s absolutely crazy to me. Absolutely love doing it. Awesome choices too by the way Also wanted to add the hardest car that I ever got out of or into 2007 Lotus gray car once you’re in it but man is it a chore to get in or out
Jay ! Im from New Zealand so im gonna pick the Pantera every day, because its got a 351 ford block, and we can get parts for them here sll day ! Frick the exotics ! 74 Pantera 74 Countach I Once knew a friend who owned a red Pantera. It was during the 80's and that car was a 100% total chick magnet. He always had a different leggy blonde with him whenever we saw him out and about driving it. He used to always joke that they thought it was a Lamborghini. LOL THE Pantera was a really cool car.
Unlike a lot of car reviewers nowadays, I don’t let door gaps bother me I don’t have a micrometer that tells me in thousandths how close or how far away the gap is
Pantera named their band after this car ,I would have expected Pantera on the tune segment,,neat cars I'd take the Pantera in the first part and the early Lamborghini in the second although the 911 would be the most reliable and usable of all of them
TIM HORTON the Buffalo Sabres player and Donut Shop owner crashed and died in one of these there is a memorial on the median of the highway near Toronto…
YES- from the article... "Horton died after losing control of his De Tomaso Pantera sports car on the Queen Elizabeth Way in St. Catharines, Ontario, in the early morning of February 21, 1974. He had played a game in Toronto the previous evening against his former team, the Maple Leafs, and was driving alone back to Buffalo, 100 mi (160 km) south. The Sabres had lost the game, and despite sitting out the third period and playing with a jaw and ankle injury, Horton was selected one of the game's three stars."
I remember seeing one of these as a kid in Laguna Beach. Sharp looking car. Seriously, would never want one. Way too tiny inside. But I'm a big car guy, so... WYR: 1) Porche 2) none of the above.
Sweet choice with the 911 yeah they’re really small on the inside always kind of sort of wanted one because it’s like the continuation of the Ford GT 40 but after being in one I no longer want one. I would love to get a Ford GT from a 2000s that’s a car that I would really like to drive. they are getting expensive which is ironic because I remember when they came out they couldn’t give those things away. I think they were 150 grand or very close to it.

Those had numerous recall and upgrades. If they all have been done they are decent cars. If they all all original and never had them they are pretty unreliable. Elvis even shot his with his pistol after getting pissed about it breaking down so often LOL
Yippee! My #1 Dream Car 😁 and America's first 'domestic' Supercar' because of the Ford labeling. Typical of Italian cars of the time darn near everything was marginal at best save for the gorgeous styling. Even the chassis was bad, with mods being needed to brace the flimsy front end for handling. Elvis had one, and in a fit of rage after it wouldn't start he shot it with his Dan Wesson 357 Magnum 🤣 A much-modified one (supposedly) reached 200MPH on the track but it wasn't certified, though 180 can be had without too much effort. The list of what was right with them was tiny compared to what was wrong. You name it: electrics, cooling, rust, bad build quality, a transaxle not meant for the power it had, a nightmare to work on, hot inside with the engine right behind you, and that list goes on and on. But it's a beautiful, exotic, rare, and sexy car unlike anything else in the world, and it's a landmark 'first' 👍There really wasn't a market for it here in the US, as whoever could afford one could afford a Ferrari, Porsche, or Lamborghini and that's what they bought instead. Ford didn't quite know how to market it and so failed in the attempt. There's huge history behind this car, chock full of easily recognized names in the automotive world 😎 I've actually seen a few on the road, the last one was back in '96 or '97 IIRC in a beautiful baby-blue color. Pulling up to a stoplight, I glanced over to who had just pulled beside me expecting nothing special, then did a double-take with dropped jaw. It's driver was doing exactly the same thing looking at my Norton Commando, two icons of the same long-gone era. Giving each other a thumbs-up and smiles as we admired each other's machines we waited for the green. We kind of raced a bit when the light turned green getting up to about 70 side-by-side before I waved to him and backed off, both of us knowing that he could have easily pulled away from me but he didn't. One of those unforgettable moments in life where the impossible happens ❤ If I win the lottery you bet your @$$ one of these will be mine ASAP regardless of cost. Hey, if the impossible happened to me once it can happen again, right? WYR you already know by now...
Noting of the Dino in the Pantera - it was an unabashedly masculine, blocky design. The Dino was sexy, the Pantera was brutish - but in a good way. I remember when these things were still afforadable because they weren't 'real' exotics. Well, proof was in the performance, and by the time they got the upgrades, there were every inch a contender and relaible too. Today, pices being what they are, well, not going make it into my garage. Seats not stock - almost look Volvo 780 Bertone couple, lol. This is a 5' 10" person car, maybe 5' 11". Can't figure out what that Tempo is doing there! WYR: 1) the Bora, 2) the Dino (mmm)

@@What.its.like. De Tomaso, himself, owned the Maserati car company at the time of the Bora's production. He had assembled a nice little collection of world class companies under his stewardship, including Ghia and Maserati as well as others. I've owned my '72 Pantera for nearly 30 years and drive it every single weekend. My next door neighbor bought his "grabber" blue one new in 1973 for under $10K and still has it parked in his garage 52 years later. Once you work out all of the original issues of the early cars, they are actually a fun, uneventful drive. As I've gotten older into my early 70s, I've shrunk nearly 4" in height, so when I was about 6'-3", it was a headbanging on the roof experience, but now at a tic under 6', it's a perfect fit. Still garners a lot of attention at weekly car meets even here in Los Angeles among the thousands of Ferraris, Lambos, Porsches, etc. As for working on the engine, the rear fibreglass luggage tub simply lifts out of the rear hatch (easily done by one person) exposing the entire engine and transaxle, so very easy access. The early Pre L cars of 1971 and the first half of 1972 are my favorite. They were streamlined, svelte, had the tiny bumperettes, and were (are) just beautiful. I did not like the later (mid-80's) huge flared fenders with the giant Countach wing, the GT5 of GT5S.
I'm not so sure. 74 was when unleaded gas became mandatory in the US and the compression dropped in about all the existing engines to handle it. The corresponding loss of power pissed off just about everyone.
Yes, looks lovely, but really, any car with the engine in the back seat or in front of the back bumper and as roomy as a sleeping bag is pretty useless. Incidentally the Cleveland engine was produced by Ford Australia from 1970 until 1982, as both 351 and 302, (different crank for a 3" stroke).
WYR 1: All of them. WYR 2: All of them. What idiot engineer put the engine in a place that makes working on it a pain in the butt? I guess the word "sensible" was viewed by them as a suggestion for that particular part of their job. I'd buy a beat up one and move the engine back about 3 feet and use a transaxle instead of a transmission, but that's just my way of solving the problem.
They tried to go for a 50/50 front to back weight distribution. If you did move the engine back it would be way to light in the front and massively heavy in the back. Bottom line it would not handle.
WYR 1: Porsche - hands down. WYR 2:Lambo - Hint? You haven't lived until you've worked one one of these - I've worked on all and I own an original 73 911T Targa from new. You need to work on your pronunciations.
Yep that is something that needs work to my credit I watched out UA-cam videos with those names and that’s how they pronounced those names (not sure if they pronounced them right lol) Sweet choices

Very appropriately for that era, it was usually parked by a small pinball/video arcade that was actually a pretty short-lived business and is long since gone. A renowned local pizzeria expanded and took over the space after a Mexican restaurant there closed down. But when I walk or drive by that spot, I can still picture the Pantera.
Awesome thank you so much for sharing that memory =)
Thanks Jay ford really didn’t market the pantera very much and kind of left it hanging out there like it was a red headed step child so far the WYR I’ll take one and then I’ll choose the Dino because I love the lines on it and the v-6 , thanks again for another great video of cars from days gone by
Sweet choices
Glad you dig this one
The Pantera lasted until 1992. They made other cars as well. Thank you so much for sharing all of that insight and information greatly appreciate it.
Congratulations on almost three years with the video channel. channel might be tiny compared to the big ones, but mighty in straight educational to the point content, keep up the great work. That Pantera looks awful tight, I'd probably get stuck even at 5' 9" just getting my legs in and out around the wheelwell hump, if you was stuck in that one you wouldn't make it in a Lotus Europa of that same era, that car was hard for me to get in and out, but the Lotus would be first pick, second, the Lamborghini,
Lotus Europa is a really tiny car I’ve been in one
Thank you so much for all of the positive vibes.
Awesome choices too by the way
Also wanted to add the hardest car that I ever got out of or into 2007 Lotus gray car once you’re in it but man is it a chore to get in or out
Jay ! Im from New Zealand so im gonna pick the Pantera every day, because its got a 351 ford block, and we can get parts for them here sll day ! Frick the exotics ! There ia a Panty tera in NZ , runs the Targa Rally, for years then put a 460 in it ! Yes a 460 Panty tearer.... ! Cheers from New Zealand 🇳🇿
Is that an orange or yellow one ,Iv'e seen one at the Cromwell car show . And yes NZ and Australia have the most of the great 351 Clevelands. 👍
Im a ford guy but its the bora for sure.....and i have to add i love the 351W....had several trucks with the windsor ....bomb proof.....great engine
Pantera had a Cleveland.
Yeah, they had the 351 Cleveland both the Cleveland and Windsor are bulletproof engines
74 Pantera
74 Countach
I Once knew a friend who owned a red Pantera. It was during the 80's and that car was a 100% total chick magnet. He always had a different leggy blonde with him whenever we saw him out and about driving it.
He used to always joke that they thought it was a Lamborghini. LOL THE Pantera was a really cool car.
Awesome choices. Thank you so much for sharing that story. What a great memory.
@@What.its.like. thanks it didn't hurt that he had rich parents either. 😀
74’ pantera for both choices. Nice car choice for video
=) happy you dig this video
Did yous check the door gap at the front ? Perfect....? How?
Unlike a lot of car reviewers nowadays, I don’t let door gaps bother me I don’t have a micrometer that tells me in thousandths how close or how far away the gap is
Pantera named their band after this car ,I would have expected Pantera on the tune segment,,neat cars I'd take the Pantera in the first part and the early Lamborghini in the second although the 911 would be the most reliable and usable of all of them
TIM HORTON the Buffalo Sabres player and Donut Shop owner crashed and died in one of these there is a memorial on the median of the highway near Toronto…
Thank you so much for adding that information. I never knew that.
@@What.its.like. When I was a kid, I wanted a Corvette soooo bad... and my parents, being the parents they were, got me every kind of Corvette imaginable... Matchbox, Avon aftershave, Revell model... ugh... they even got a set of Corvette keys and hung them on the Christmas Tree when I was 16... and there, parked in the garage, was a brand new RADIO CONTROLLED Corvette... now you know why I am the way I am... LOL... anywhoo... my Dad fixed cars on the side, and when I was 17 (1980) he got a '74 'vette in with a blown engine to fix. I begged n begged n begged to let me just sit in it.... nope... but after it was fixed the owner gave him permission to let me take it for a drive, with my Dad obviously. I HATED IT! LOL I had just bought my first Grand Marquis, and detested that 'vette... Much to my Mom's thankfullness.
Awesome story. Thank you so much for sharing that memory with us.
I got to drive a mid 70s Corvette a little while ago it had a 350 in it, it wasn’t a high horsepower version it was ok..
I’m not gonna go out of my way to buy one
Lotus Elsie is one of the hardest cars to get in and out of once you’re in it it’s fine, but getting out it is a huge chore
@@What.its.like. Try a Dodge Viper! I rented one for the day on a trip to Vegas... FAST! But my flip flop melted because of where the exaust ran, and burnt the shit outta my leg flopping out into the parking lot.
Yes I’ve down that as well
Great episode! I wouldn't drive on those wheels, magnesium doesn't age well, especially if someone put a steel wool pad to them...show only!!!
Glad you did this episode. Thank you so much for that information about magnesium I never knew that.
A guy in my town got one when they first came out, missed a corner and flipped it end over end at about 140. Somehow walked away. I came across it still in the ditch, before the wrecker got there. I’ve got some great pictures of it wadded up like tinfoil.
Thank you so much for sharing that crazy story do you have a Facebook? You should share it with us on her Facebook page the pictures you have it be interesting to see. I wish UA-cam had a community bulletin board that you guys can show pictures of your rides. =)
Those had numerous recall and upgrades. If they all have been done they are decent cars. If they all all original and never had them they are pretty unreliable.
Elvis even shot his with his pistol after getting pissed about it breaking down so often LOL
I would take the red one.
There's huge history behind this car, chock full of easily recognized names in the automotive world 😎
I've actually seen a few on the road, the last one was back in '96 or '97 IIRC in a beautiful baby-blue color.
Awesome choice man. Thank you so much for sharing all the trivia/information on this one. I greatly appreciate it.
I would pick the 74 Porsche & the 74 Lamborghini. 🤔
Sweet choices =)
Have had my red '72 Pantera for 30 years. Drive it every weekend. My next door neighbor bought his new in 1973 for $9800. and still has it.
WYR 1 the Maserati 2 Lambo , the Rickenbacker
Awesome choices one vote for Rickenbacker

Gotta go with the Ferrari, but I wouldn't turn anyone of them down.

Pantera because I could drive it repair it and keep it on the road. It's also not a sin to modify and update these cars to make the more drivable.
Totally agree
Thanks for the admition of the mispronunciations, because I cringed a little less at the butchery

The compression cant be that low.....
Hahaha roomy as a sleeping bag that’s gold =)
WYR 1: All of them.
WYR 2: All of them.
What idiot engineer put the engine in a place that makes working on it a pain in the butt? I guess the word "sensible" was viewed by them as a suggestion for that particular part of their job. I'd buy a beat up one and move the engine back about 3 feet and use a transaxle instead of a transmission, but that's just my way of solving the problem.
They tried to go for a 50/50 front to back weight distribution. If you did move the engine back it would be way to light in the front and massively heavy in the back. Bottom line it would not handle.
@@dougabbott8261 Then put the gas tank in the front. It worked for the VW Beetle.
Dino

WYR 1: Porsche - hands down. WYR 2:Lambo - Hint? You haven't lived until you've worked one one of these - I've worked on all and I own an original 73 911T Targa from new. You need to work on your pronunciations.
Yep that is something that needs work to my credit I watched out UA-cam videos with those names and that’s how they pronounced those names (not sure if they pronounced them right lol)

Pantera;
1st, 2nd, and 3rd.
Countach looks dated, too much fron overhang, for starters.
That front bumper is garbage...
...a perfect example of the old saw: 'can't fix stupid,' (right?).
This is what those enormous tuition costs buys you...
