Ford opened a purpose-built plant in Wayne, Michigan, to produce station wagons. This arrangement lasted from 1957 to around 1964. The very same plant went on to build F-150s and Broncos for decades and is still in use, building more Broncos and Rangers.

Master patterns for the block were make at Midwest Pattern, Mpls in '52, I worked on those some as an apprentice. Lots of coreboxes. I have an all original '54 Crestline fordor, I fitted rods & mains to .001, I run 5-20 full synthetic, car has been all over the US and Canada, lots of miles at at 80 mph. Carb' & distributor have to match, you cannot 'upgrade' without changing dist', as original is by far the best idea or it's problems. The 239 stands alone in a lot of respects,. I do have dual exhaust. It's a great road car, smooth, quiet, great radio also.

The early 50's Silver Hawk and the Golden Hawk would be better comparison. The 64-66 Thunderbirds All the way. 390-427 SOHC was only available to special people or organizations. The Public did have access to the 428 in the '66 version

The Corvette and the Thunderbird for 57 are both hard to get in and out of.. the 57 Corvette is harder to get in and out of than the Thunderbird.. especially when the top is on with a Corvette you have to go in headfirst it's really weird and unorthodox

In 1969 Chrysler blew everyone away with their new fuselage design for their cars. The Imperial was way more modern looking than any of it's competitors. However, Lincoln knocked it out of the park with this one. There is still one of these as a daily driver in south KC. As an Imperial owner I admire this car. The tire bulge on the trunk is supposed to mimic the spare tire in the back. FYI. It's also interesting that they chose to use standard outside door openers as opposed to the flush mounted design of the '64 and later Imperials.

Hi Jay! What a stunning wagon! The 1959 Merc was a pretty good looker! My guess is that the speed warning indicator on the 1959 Merc was similar to the one fitted to the 1958 Edsel. When you exceeded the set speed a part of the speedo would turn red. Probably the same for Mercury. Gee, I wish station wagons would come back in style! Probably won't happen, but one can wish! My dad's first car was a brand new grey '49 4 door with the 6 cylinder. I came along in 51 and have only very vague memories of it. Dad quickly found out that while is was a decent city car, it was problematic on long highway trips. It was constantly overheading and the radiator would "boil over". He replaced it with a '53.

I don't know if you watch vinwiki which is a really cool car finding app if you have the Vin number, you can plug it in and find your car or where it was last registered. They do stories on there and there's various people that tell the stories. One person said that he had a dealership in Ohio, so I was like huh maybe he would be up to something ( not Ed bolan someone else ) I reached out and he got back to me and said yeah drop by the shop whenever so I did and he wasn't there so I got the tour I've reached out a twice more just to let them know I'm interested, but just going to let that one go because we aren't into that same cars anyway.. Colony Park even the name sounds sophisticated. 59 DeSoto wagon you checked out a while ago, stunning but no 4 or 2 door H/T's. For me, Merc's equal is the 1957 DeSoto Explorer fully optioned. Though again not a H/T many special features were available on the Explorer. Just one other point, no mention of the MEL 430 cid option on Mercury? Keep up the great work.

I couldn't find anything saying that the 430 was optional on commuter.. I was also equally surprised to see that the 383 280 hp version was the pace engine for the commuter because in the car you could get the 312 or the 383. I didn't see any literature saying that the 430 was optional. This is a site that I get a lot of specs from and they didn't have the 430 listed as an engine that could be in that car www.automobile-catalog.com/make/mercury/full-size_mercury_5gen/full-size_mercury_5gen_commuter_wagon/1959.html#gsc.tab=0
