Yeah, it's basically your Duel Fight 1 on 1 fight in an action game akin to Vergil/Nelo Angelo fights in Devil May Cry, or even fighting Jetstream Sam in Metal Gear Rising.
I like to think of it as a duel to test just how good you've become at the game. If you've been slacking or half-asleep he,ll annihilate you and the lack of QTE's send the message of "Earn your victory earnestly." At least on non-baby mode.
I was expecting a spectacle similar to Bahamut, but what I got was a straight skill check. This fight was a Souls boss without the rings. Arcade mode is going to be a nightmare
It was most unexpected, considering the last time I heard Barnabas' voice actor was when he played Preston Marlowe in the Battlefield Bad Company games.
:s It's great voice acting BUT NOT FOR A GOD. Odin should instill fear into our souls just by his monsterous deep voice alone OR he should just not talk at all, because why should he? He's above all.
@@R.James. Odin is not above all. Bahamut is the God of all Eidolons. and even then Leviathan is still King of Eidolons by most FF lore. Odin from FF is not the same as Odin from Mythology. Only that Odin is heavily influenced by Odin in Mythology. Odin in FF is more of a lone dark undefeated knight with immense power who usually only gives his power to those who have proven their worth. Odin in FF4 and 8 is a perfect example of this.
@@RedStreak103 Oh very interesting. Thanks for clarifying. I thought Odin was based on the mythology yeah so that's why. FF8 is my fav game of all time and Odin there was just the end all be all. The way he entered was just ... you knew it was game-over for the enemy. However with that said, I still don't like this voice-over for him, his voice should still make your knees tremble.
I kinda like how it sounds initially like the whole "you've made a weapon of your weakness" bit is sarcastic, even the way Barnabas says "I apologize". Then he says "You are not the fool I took you for", and you realize he's being sincere. And then, he lets loose.
When I first beat this boss fight i was disappointed we didn't get a full Eikon fight like Bahamut, but looking back on it now it makes a lot more sense that we fought him mainly in his semi prime form. The Eikon of Odin wasn't really the main thing that made Barnabas so strong, it was the black blade paired with his masterful swordsmanship that was regarded as the best in all of Valisthea that made him so OP, so the fact the we straight up whooped his ass while just using sword and no eikon just goes to show you how badass Clive is. Still not better than Bahamut though.
@@rexlapis1075technically yeah but for one on ones not so much because he can’t be as quick. Odins power purely comes from his blade not the fact he can turn into a huge horse and big man. I would argue in semi prime he’s way more overpowered because of his mastery of the blade

@@Aceondacase They story was already ruined after the project was ripped from Nomura's hands. It was supposed to not just be a story about brotherhood, but love and (hate?) between Luna (Stella). As well as a large emphasis on the love of a father. I strongly think many parts of the game were supposed to be played with young Noctis, experiencing the past with the other young Chocobro's and Luna.
I loved barnabas’s theme from the very start but damn it’s awesome how upbeat and celebration esque the boss theme is, makes it feel like the best 1v1 duel I’ve ever had the joy of playing since Slave Knight Gael
I like how David Menkin (Barnabas) has a North American accent IRL and you can hear that with Malos in Xenoblade 2 where the cast is otherwise full of British voice actors, but he is actually originally from Norway and that his accent was just very developed, so it sounds like he tapped into the voice of his earlier days speaking English for the role of the major Norse deity’s Dominant. Especially since Barnabas is mentioned to not even be of Ash, so giving him an approximate yet foreign quality that adds to him.
I like how in Xenoblade 1-3 and this when UK’s varied regional accents are utilized in the English audio of an original concept world to signify region or fantasy race. (Like how Gormotti, the cat ear people, have Welsh accents; or High Entia, the winged head people from Bionis’s capital, have thicker Southern English accents)
Barnabas really fights like no other Dominant, the way he goes in and out of various previously unseen stages of Priming is incredibly impressive, and it's like he can semi-Prime to a state where he can concentrate Odin's full power without having to sacrifice speed or go into the huge form and make a big target of himself, he shows amazing control of his Eikon, like he IS Odin. It may not be the big Eikon Vs. Eikon spectacle like some of the other bosses, but still an amazing fight that really showcased a Dominant using their abilities at full potential, and the way he becomes more psychotic as the fight goes on having finally found a worthy opponent, fucking love it.
I kept hearing that the Barnabas fight was so disappointing. Now that I've actually done it, I feel like I couldn't disagree more. I think it was one of the most intense and aesthetically cool boss fights in the game. Sure, we didn't get a full Odin and Ifrit fight, but honestly, I didn't mind. Despite all the spectacle, I kind of thought Titan and Bahamut were a bit TOO over the top and took too long to complete. The Barnabas fight lasted just long enough, and his descent into deeper madness over the course of the fight was truly unsettling. I think the Benedikta fight is still my favorite boss in the game, but Barnabas might well be a close second.
The Garuda fight is prolly my fav fight. It shows the power of Eikons to change the entire battle field and world. It was like fighting in a hurricane! I think it was a real grounded display of Eikons power. Sure scorching the earth and shooting beams are cool, but this changed the weather! Idk It did something for meX
I’m 38 years old. Of all the ff16 games I’ve played this game took the crown. The story, the action, and most importantly the skill it takes to beat the game. Hard mode is the only option to truly revel in it.
If there's ever a new dissidia game, I'd rather have him as the Chaos rep for FFXVI rather than Ultima. Ultima is kinda similar to Zemus from FFIV, an alien god main antagonist that's been manipulating behind the scenes. But instead of Zemus being Chaos rep for FF4, it's Golbez(the character he's been controlling). I can see them doing smthn similar with having Barnabas instead for FF16 rep
I could see Barnabas being happy in a Dissidia like game if he gets a lot of worthy enemies to fight. Look how excited he was when Clive challenged him.
Ultima gives me strong Veros from Infinite Undiscovery (another excellent Jrpg) vibes. Both are gods, both manipulate the mc and the antagonist to fulfill their will, both enjoy toying with mortal lives, and both are brought to heel by their own hubris.
I have to admit the bosses in this game are quite something. VII, XIII, and XVare still my all time favorites followed by VIII, X, and IX, but XVI is catching up into the top 10 just because of the cinematic scenes and boss fights. 😊 SquareEnix you did a darn good job in creating another beautiful game that I'm loving in the franchise. I haven't yet played it, but I hope to soon.
I think it's okay that we didn't. It's like saying we don't always need Ifrit to kick total ass, though it would've been cool to see Ifrit bust out a greatsword berserk style and go ham on Odin in a sword fight. Damn....I was expecting it too
We couldn't have a eikon fight because ifrit would never have one against Odin the fight would've been a 3 tap at best cause he got pieced up off of 1 hit from the sword
Official lyrics of the Boss Battle : Song Name: the riddle Lyrics: The twain On ten feet run Three eyes and one Trained upon victory Foreseen With steel, darkness comes
6:57 really underrated line. Perfectly encapsulates how Barnabas feels humanity has gotten them to this low point and that they can’t get out of it themselves.
Everyone calls this the Odin boss fight, yet Barnabas never actually uses his Eikon form Edit: Let me rephrase, Barnabas never uses his Eikon form IN ITS OWN PHASE/FIGHT, the game stuffs him in one attack and one QTE
@@aguywithgames3135 well they did say each will be different from the last, I think this is suppose to be a duel like battle, then again I expect no less from Odin.
Easily the best fight in the game, mechanically anyway. Titan is a great fight, but it’s not as fun or replayable, it’s just a great first time experience.
16:29 ost kinda sounds like a celebration to me, the change in the ost made it my favorite fight in the game, though not as big in scale as the others before, it’s last half does it justice
i really love that Odin's (and maybe Ultima's?) theme that starts at 2:55 is basically the ff1 overworld theme but slowed down. i kept thinking how it sounded so familiar and then it just clicked. Instead of being full of hope it's almost like a... dirge? not sure if that's accurate or not.
I'm surprised no one in the comments noticed that that's Malos from Xenoblade Chronicles 2 that Clive's fighting. David Menkin's ability to go from calm and collected to full on shouting to maniacal cacking is terrific range. Wait, Barnabas is Malos and Ultima is Z...? Well played, Square Enix! Well played!

Bahamut was an amazing spectacle. Barnabus/Odin is a one (plus Torgal) on one duel that felt so fun to experience and test what I've learned thus far. Plus the music change is fantastic. But can someone explain how during the final phase the player was able to use the LB attacks outside of LB? I just beat the game and not once did I ever see myself able to do without having to burn my LB to... well to use that moveset. Unless it's the game being confused or one of the accessibility rings doing it.
The berserker ring accessory gives you limit break attacks for a few seconds after you do a precision dodge. I think you find it around 30% through the game.
The Berserker Ring. Makes the game a lot, lot easier. It triggers a semi LB counter if you make a precision dodge in the direction of an attack instead of away from it.
can i just say that after 16:00, barnabas sounds freakishly exactly like bill cypher from gravity falls. especially during his psychotic laughing. I love this fight so much.
For me Bahamut and Odin fights are two different thing, we feast our eyes on greatest battle eikon bahamut, and get serious play time with sword battle odin fight. it is cool as it is.
I like how Barnabas is being portrayed as cold and composed person throughout the game, but in this fight, especially from 15:37 onward, he shows us how insane he can be.
the only thing i wish is that they had done is let the last segment of the fight be without his helmet. like around 15:30 when he does the sick descent into reveling, i wanted to see the emotions on his face, man!

Still pretty ironic how he keeps pushing on how "we humans" are not that weak. Yet he's barely human anymore considering he has multiple Eikon powers in him. The equivalent of the 1% saying "we humans" are not poor.
Barnabas may have been a pretty flat character, but his voice acting is amazing. I love how he goes completely insane towards the end. Huge Vergil vibes from this boss too, it was definitely one of the harder ones for me. A shame the Odin segments are so short but it’s still great overall.
The one thing I feel disappointed by is that Clive got absolutely fucking clapped a few times before this, but he comes in and stands a chance now without much of a reason plot wise. If you've been slacking or half-asleep he,ll annihilate you and the lack of QTE's send the message of "Earn your victory earnestly."
At least on non-baby mode.
I was expecting a spectacle similar to Bahamut, but what I got was a straight skill check.
This fight was a Souls boss without the rings. Arcade mode is going to be a nightmare
yeah first boss where i thought jesus the potential in this game is pretty big cant wait to get to him on my FF mode play through
Every action game needs a great rival fight, and this is definitely this game’s. He even uses Judgement Cut
Loved Odin's monologue from 15:37, absolutely brilliant voice acting.
Genuinely amazing
Obviously in his full eikon form he would be stronger
@@rexlapis1075technically yeah but for one on ones not so much because he can’t be as quick. Odins power purely comes from his blade not the fact he can turn into a huge horse and big man. I would argue in semi prime he’s way more overpowered because of his mastery of the blade
@@jamrah8713
No? It’s mentioned the true power of a dominant is when using the power of the eikon
Full form Odin would obviously be stronger just like any other
If He was fighting any other eikon , he would be using his full form instead
Agreed especially how Odin got one shotted just after transforming
@@breadandbutter6097 I think the one got one shotted is his horse Sleipnir, after got hit by Ifrit Zantetsuken his horse vanished. when Barnabas prime into Odin using his Skill the horse is nowhere to be seen

Funny enough, Clive gets a dragon arm like Godrick’s in the new DLC for FF16
I hope someone makes a ff16 mod for Elden ring
This game's combat is basically what FFXV should have been like.
Specifically when playing as Luna, who would use the power of the gods/eikons to fight.
Agree. Perhaps they didn't know what combat mechanics to use.
@@ronaldlalisan4987 They clearly did have a vision at some point, but then forced the lead developer to drop the project and go work on Kingdom Hearts.
Screwing up the entire project.
@@jefthereaperwhile 15 wasn’t good when first dropping I really wish they let him finish his vision ….the reason 15 stuck out to me so much was the caption of the game literally “a fantasy based on reality” all locations looked Gorgeous and even took from real life areas. The setting was perfect and the story was beyond saving after the year 1 patch.
Exactly what I was thinking. What’s his theme called btw? Can’t find it anywherw
@@adrianDaProducaThe Riddle
When he laughed at Clive midway, I burst out laughing. This is one of the funnest battles, in my opinion, but nothing tops Bahamut.
Definitely the coolest 1V1 😂 I love it
Barnabas really fights like no other Dominant, the way he goes in and out of various previously unseen stages of Priming is incredibly impressive, and it's like he can semi-Prime to a state where he can concentrate Odin's full power without having to sacrifice speed or go into the huge form and make a big target of himself, he shows amazing control of his Eikon, like he IS Odin.
He definitely will be, he has a lot of Zenos, Sephiroth and Vergil DNA in him. With some Garland / Golbez esque fashion
Ultima feels like a personal arch-nemesis to Clive though.
I could see Barnabas being happy in a Dissidia like game if he gets a lot of worthy enemies to fight. Look how excited he was when Clive challenged him.
@@shiroutheherotraceon3313 would be cool to see barnabas fight against noctis, firion, garland, emperor, cloud and sephiroth
This game reminds me of FF4 in so many ways...!
I love that the music gives the sense of Odin riding the storm
Odin is the storm that is approaching
Ultima gives me strong Veros from Infinite Undiscovery (another excellent Jrpg) vibes. Both are gods, both manipulate the mc and the antagonist to fulfill their will, both enjoy toying with mortal lives, and both are brought to heel by their own hubris.
15:37 This whole speech got my adrenaline rushing into the final battle
Ok but calm down....
Glad I’m not the only one xD
I have to admit the bosses in this game are quite something. VII, XIII, and XVare still my all time favorites followed by VIII, X, and IX, but XVI is catching up into the top 10 just because of the cinematic scenes and boss fights. 😊
SquareEnix you did a darn good job in creating another beautiful game that I'm loving in the franchise. I haven't yet played it, but I hope to soon.
😂😮😢😂😂😅🎉 23:30 😅🎉😂😅😮😅🎉😅
Someone who like XIII. Thank you! Most people didn’t like it but I loved it. But For me this is my new no 1.
It’s a shame we never had an eikon battle but this, in my opinion, was still pretty fun
I think they realized they couldn’t top Bahamut and gave us a sick Clive boss
I think it's okay that we didn't. It's like saying we don't always need Ifrit to kick total ass, though it would've been cool to see Ifrit bust out a greatsword berserk style and go ham on Odin in a sword fight. Damn....I was expecting it too
We couldn't have a eikon fight because ifrit would never have one against Odin the fight would've been a 3 tap at best cause he got pieced up off of 1 hit from the sword
I mean odin is all about duels. So this fits very well

Everyone calls this the Odin boss fight, yet Barnabas never actually uses his Eikon form
Edit: Let me rephrase, Barnabas never uses his Eikon form IN ITS OWN PHASE/FIGHT, the game stuffs him in one attack and one QTE
To be fair, the Odin Eikon got one-shot by Ifrit.
Barnabas is meant to be the Vergil / Zenos of the game, which is why the boss fight is meant to be a 1 v 1 sword fight
Plus what would you expect from a Odin fight, it suppose to be a duel.
He uses it in short bursts against normal Clive though. A good subversion from all the Eikon fights before.
The Bahamut fight is my all time favorite, but this one is amazing too
Man it’s the complete opposite for me on Titan. I’ve replayed that stage 3 times now😭
This is the worst fight in the game just dodge and go behind him the whole fight, pretty disappointing cinematic wise too
@@CountArtoriaswell, all the other fights are like that, dodge and attack.

16:29 ost kinda sounds like a celebration to me, the change in the ost made it my favorite fight in the game, though not as big in scale as the others before, it’s last half does it justice
For him it is. Clive's given him back the joy of a good fight.
i really love that Odin's (and maybe Ultima's?) theme that starts at 2:55 is basically the ff1 overworld theme but slowed down. i kept thinking how it sounded so familiar and then it just clicked. Instead of being full of hope it's almost like a... dirge? not sure if that's accurate or not.
Its actually great to see the constant progression of skill from the player. The player has turned into an absolute beast playing the game.

The voice actor for Barnabas is incredible, I love how he progressively comes more and more insane as the fight rages on.

Watching Ifrit/Clive break the sword and using Zantetsuken at 14:41 was the hypest thing for me.

This fight is so good because it feels personal.
@@lightcolt8784 That's what it does?! I thought it was just a dps accessory for dodging correctly. That's great to know now.

Way I see it is the fight against Bahamut is the best spectacle Eikonic fight, while the Odin fight with Barnabas has the best combat.
one of the best boss batlles
12:57 almost had a heart attack thinking Torgal died when I played this part
19:15 the use of flames of rebirth fit so well here
Still pretty ironic how he keeps pushing on how "we humans" are not that weak.
Yet he's barely human anymore considering he has multiple Eikon powers in him.
The equivalent of the 1% saying "we humans" are not poor.
Yeah, I also thought that point did not fully land ;)
Music: Titan
Spectacle: Bahamut
Mechanics: Odin
16:20 Of course David Menkin knows how to go full ham on the screaming, he also voiced Malos in Xenoblade 2
Barnabas may have been a pretty flat character, but his voice acting is amazing. I love how he goes completely insane towards the end.
Huge Vergil vibes from this boss too, it was definitely one of the harder ones for me. A shame the Odin segments are so short but it’s still great overall.
Now this, it may not be as spectacle as the other boss fights but this right here is peak voice acting.
Odin is my favorite icon
Once more, David Menkin has proven he's an *amazing* actor!
The one thing I feel disappointed by is that Clive got absolutely fucking clapped a few times before this, but he comes in and stands a chance now without much of a reason plot wise. Still an amazing fight, just wish it had a better build up and he had to power up from a crystal or something to be able to do anything
He was powered up by Shiva beforehand.
@@groudonvert7286 Yeah, but that's not really a valid reason tbh. Remember the name of the quest you fight Barnabas for the final time in? The Last King. Fitting as the kingdom of waloed is the last in ash to fall. With only the grand duchy of Rosaria and Dhalmekian Republic are the only nations in all of Valesthia that survived. The former being restored after the fall of the holy empire of Sanbreque and crystalline dominion.
Hearing the phoenix screaming with the "flames of rebirth" ability is music to my ears

I was hyped that the eikon fight with odin would be epic and was thinking he's the dark warden and clive alone lost twice against barnabas so I was thinking the fight would be clive/ifrit with bahamut (warden of light) against odin! A little bit disappointed tbh but the theme was amazing at the end!
I really don’t think this fight would have worked half as well if it was some massive spectacle. This one deserved to be far more sluggish and brutal. Fits the clash of ideals and the personal anger here
