Just hit this part last night and I audibly gasped when I heard the Phoenix cry and Joshua swooped into frame with the music blasting. Such a good theme!
They actually hint to this earlier in the story during the scene right after the typhon fight, where a mellowed version of this plays as Joshua saves Clive

Dude there is just something about this game, Joshua being built up as a sickly character, and when he turns into the Phoenix you immediately think he's gonna die so the moment becomes super dangerous and you question whether or not Joshua can survive the transformation. This game has me so invested into the characters, it's insane. Masterpiece game and soundtrack, no doubt about it.

Exactly, from that to later on fighting alongside his brother, it's so epic and yet heartwarming to finally reunite that way. I absolutely love the brotherhood in this game, including with Dion
I liked Joshua’s character development a bit more than Clive’s.

Sorry but i can't stop thinking Joshua should have been killed for good and become a reason to transform Clive's mindset, as he would have been responsible for the end of his beloved brother's life and should have faced the consequences of having a regal prince and heir to the throne savagely beaten to death. I understand Joshua's the dominant of the Phoenix, meaning he's symbolically and literally bound to some themes like "rebirth" - but precisely, his rebirth brings no RENEWAL in the plot : on the contrary, narratively speaking, everything remains the same - they're still brothers in the end, everyone forgives and forgets, so they still want to fight together, even if Clive nearly massacred Joshua's body as he couldn't keep Ifrit under control in the prologue, even if Joshua saw his own brother go mad at him and become a freaky hellish monster out of nowhere. Actually i feel like Joshua could have ended up as a final boss or something, being traumatised and radically changed by his brother's ambivalent nature, being an unknown dominant of fire casting some shadown on the regular one, being a threat for the mothercrystals, hearing voices, being a political traitor and prince-slayer. After all that, Joshua remaining a preacher of virtue seems illogical - he should have ended seeking revenge on Clive, or pursuing him as the monster he had become for all crystals and dominants, as it's the interest of all dominants, Joshua being one of them.
But here again Square served us some Marvel "choose your Destiny" crap : F*ck the narrative if the two brothers, if Joshua's a popular character, we can't let him die the way Aerith did and we should write him a longer path instead, even if it implies simplifying our scenario and conceiving a stereotypical alien-ish allegory of fate from an outerworld who wants to end humanity in the name of Lovecraftish gods. Please : it's been the same story since XII and most of the players seem unsatisfied with it, so why not change it ??

Even more so since the Titan and Bahamut themes are also indisputable masterpieces. FF fans finally eating good again.

Here's what I kinda like about the thematics for this theme. It's first appearance was when it was battle between two brothers. And now, it plays for technically another battle between brothers.
With Anabella marrying Sylvestre, Dion effectively becomes their stepbrother.
Honestly playing through the game. Phoenix's theme is the best song in the game. Its just sooooo much tension and heroic moments in it

Yeah this theme captures EVERYTHING about the moment its played. Twice. Not just for us as an audience, but for Joshua himself. Its really one of the greatest themes in all of Final Fantasy. I only wish 16 was just a BIT better as a game in terms of its story and....well.....RPG "elements" (if you want to call them elements).
After 30 years of FF this song is now one of my all time favorites, it’s more epic than one winged angel.
I love how Phoenix has its own Eikon battle theme, since we also hear this song when Joshua's fighting Ifrit in the prologue.
I cant get over this theme, especially that beginning and how it just builds up the tension and grand scale of what you are about to witness. Perfect for the opening to this game and for this fight. Beautiful, powerful theme.
Indeed. This is probably the most competent track in the game that shows what peak Soken is capable of. Unfortunately his dungeon and battle tracks far outshine the rest of the OST by leagues.

Absolutely. It is insufficient to describe the impact of this game on just a 2023 or Final Fantasy franchise level. The heights that FF16 reached on the 'gaming as an art form' front needs to be described on a history of gaming level.

It became clear when you fight Garuda and the Ifrit clone. each Eikon has their theme. Also the lyrics of this theme has references to the Phoenix. Look it up.

When they played this part again I literally jumped out of my couch i was like YES THEY PLAYED THIS AGAIN
I find the scene at 3:05 great, Clive and Joshua reunited after 15+ years, both in the Eikon forms standing by each other as they always should have, brothers in arms fighting together. The the looks of assurance they give each other before staring down Bahamut, ready to take him down.
The fact that Joshua joins Clive when he's using that beam attack is also a great touch
As someone who has been into videogames for the last 30+ years but never really got into Final Fantasy, I tell you this one is going straight into the short list of the best boss fights in gaming history. Goddamn.

This is one of the most "final fantasy" tracks I've heard in a while. The main melodies legit sound like they could've been in the early games in the series.

Pure Masterpiece
I didn't realise how much nostalgia the intro of this theme and so many others in this game gave me. Such a throwback to old NES and SNES Final Fantasy's boss tracks. I stupidly tried to hate this game, as I've done for many modern Final Fantasy's because of my nostalgia for turn-based...but the more I got through this game, I simply couldn't. This is the best modern Final Fantasy post turn-based FF games by a huge distance for me. I still think FF7-remake nailed the battle system the best in modern times, but that game had its own flaws. As a standalone, FF16 is crazy good. They nailed almost everything.
Surely this must be up there in the top 3 FF songs of all time

The whole bahamut fight was amazing but i gotta admit this was my personal favorite phase of the fight controlling phoenix both shooting flares at each other and trying to evading them in the air

I never played FF16 (or any FF for that matter) and I was a bit shocked that it beat BG3 at the game awards for best soundtrack considering how great that was.

Soken keeps finding new ways to bring back elements from classic Final Fantasy musical leitmotifs Uematsu created into beautiful songs bringing new life for more players to enjoy listening to, much like how the Phoenix is associated with rebirth. This theme nicely comes back across XVI's story moments defiantly.
I really like how he must've thought of using the rising and falling arpeggios from the simple yet iconic Prelude for this theme. I love the Eikon of Fire's theme so much, it's stuck with me since I first heard of it. Thank you for this upload!

Suddenly, 'away' has become my favorite word.
The Bahamut fight going more and more chaotic and destructive, with the risk of the entire world being erased was the best fight in the game
I love this music track so much, that I have it prepared as the battle theme for a specific boss enemy in my D&D campaign. And yes, it is a giant bird, a gargantuan one in fact, which makes it so perfectly fitting.

In Greek mythology Prometheus is the titan who stole the fire from Mt Olympus and gifted it to humans. Epimetheus is the titan who was married to a woman called Pandora created by the Greek gods, she brought with her the infamous Pandora’s box, which contains all the woes of the world but also hope. Both are relevant to the themes of phoenix, fire and rebirth.

The FFXIV callbacks in this track are great.

This fight was so FFXIV it was absolutely CRACKED. If XIV was a single-player game, this 100% would've been how the Seventh Umbral Calamity and coil went.
Maybe one day we will get a remaster of 14 but with single player only. I wouldn't mind it.
