I made a build specifically for this boss fight that used abilities from every single eikon (with limit break for Ifrit). Let me tell you, cycling abilities from Phoenix to Garuda to Ramuh and so on was just the most unbelievable experience in games for me.
Main story, side quests, characters, npcs, and the ending. All these are absolutely superb. Absolutely the best story I´ve ever played, the ending was the icing on the cake. While sad and brutal, its pure poetry. I´m afraid I may never play or watch a story this good again.
@@DepressedMicaiahASMRagreed, the game fell off halfway through, Ultima is the most boring villain. The qte’s in the boss fights are so shit. And don’t even get me started on the performance. Combat is still really fun, especially respec and the 7 different Eikon powers.
I'm glad it showed Ultima bursting out of Joshua. I was wondering why he was still keeping him sealed inside himself when Ultima was clearly still doing stuff. Turns out he was a hive mind and he was trying to hold back one of his... bodies?
Him doing the shield of rosaria salute saying that he’ll shield the firebird’s flame forevermore right after losing Joshua and inheriting his powers… powerful
The final phase kinda reminds me of FFXIV final bosses in a sense, mainly with how the boss starts all calm and composed with a constant "holier than thou" attitude against you, but halfway through the fight when its clear that you're gaining the upper hand it breaks character and grows increasingly more desperate and reckless with its attacks.
"Final" Fantasy I really think that it was Clive who survived at the end & took Joshua's name to write his story (just like how he took Cid's name). If you pay attention to all of the side quest before setting off to the Origin, the game pretty much hinting that Clive will live as an Author, come back to Jill at sunrise, & the voice narrating at the end "and thus how our journey end" was none other than Clive.
i thought it was hinted that if joshua survived perhaps he also was able to save clive or if the game wasnt well recieves they could say clive died and thats the end
It was stated in the game that once the curse took hold you were screwed as it would continue to spread. He also said that his body couldn't handle all that power and that Ultima was mistaken thinking that he could. Clive be dead.
@@XultanisDragon nope only his hand turned to stone the curse was stopped because there is no more magic for it to spread anymore so...Clive has to put down his sword now
@@drakofox1362 Nah, the broski is dead. He already talked about how all the power was too much even for his body meaning his body couldn't handle it. His hand turning to stone just means that he is soccumbing to the curse. It was said that once the curse takes hold it spreads, didn't say anything about magic needing to be used after. Using magic makes it spread faster but he already pushed his body to the limits with what he did. He tried to do everything to bring back Joshua but couldn't. He could only repair the flesh but not bring back the life that was lost. He then used his power to take out the last mother crystal and he used everything he had to do it. There were other people who knew about Joshua's idea about writing his book. Probably one of the kids or even the scribes of the Flame who did it. The brothers are dead.
There were so many references to other work in this game, the 2 I can remember right now were the ninja you fight in the Greatwood has a move that really reminds me of Rock Lee from Naruto (the lotus technique where he izuna drops you) and then the finishing move on Typhon was a reference to Goku vs Freeza on Namek (the spirit bomb before he turns Super Saiyan)
Anyone get major FF8 Sorceress vibes from Ultima? Mainly his 2nd form when he absorbs all of the Ultima's. Face paint, godly space mage, crown/headpieces. Just feels like Ultimecia to me in a way.
So essentially Jesus his brother and Lucifer throw hands against God to prevent him from starting the Rapture? It’s what I’m getting from the story up to this point. The dialogue between them gives off that vibe.
More the gnostic vision of Christianism. Jesus and Sophia (but showed as a male here, Clive) vs Demiurge/Satan, an evil fake god more than a demon king.
@@mymelody3881 before the final fight, if you have done the previous torgal quests, you get the final one, where Sharon says Torgal has been sad and crying lately. It´s a very emotional quest about Clive and Torgal bonding.
29:52 “Have you truly become… free?” I love that line so much. On some level, Ultima’s starting to realise his plan has come undone. He starts talking in the first person singular, too. The way he powers up after saying that cinches it; this isn’t just the proceedings of a ritual anymore, this is a fight for his life.
Clive’s final monologue to ultima hit me in a special way as someone who has constantly struggled to lean on people and find reasons to maintain hope it was a great reminder as to why I do anyways.
I love how the boss battles in this game can transition into Shmup and even borderline bullethell Shmup territory. Just pure chaotic visual splendor. But Ultima certainly takes the Cake on all that.

This is not secret but true ending...a lot of players already established it. And my words are still true..Odin had no chance against Bahamut if there was 1 on 1 between them. Thus a beautiful thing to notice is, in every Ultima related fight Bahamut powers does more damage than Odin's. Which is a thing to applause for the Creators presence of mind as Odin was a deep believer of Ultima, thus he couldn't do much damage to his deity whereas Bahamut was motivated to finish the dark shadow/Ultima. Amazing presence of mind by Creators. Also if guys ever notice whenever Clive do a long range damage to enemies through Phoenix's fire, Jill hide herself in ice coverage to protect herself. This so damn good and well thought.
@@yngshoelaceea I have to agree with you I thought he may have meant when clive was doing the clashes going through each of Clive’s Eikons but they do roughly the same damage so yea you’re right it’s literally because Odins skills are just meant to power his special other than that they are ass I wanted Odins abilities to do more damage but I just stuck with Bahamut in the end having a whole Eikon around one move made it difficult to work with in combat especially when it takes a long time to charge to level 5 didn’t seem worth having with is a shame

I don't know about the other gamers but this game really hit the right spots. I think people were just pissed because it was no longer using the battle mechanics of the other games and picked action. BTW how is that a secret ending when everyone sees it after the Credits?
@@atmastand3485Ultima’s design (of all its forms) is great cause he/they referenced all the best villains of FF. Typhon second form as well when he gets 6 wings, looks like Kefka from VI. Dark Ifrit with “one black wing” - Sephiroth references. Ultima’s an cosmic entity like Zeromus from IV. He manipulated everything and everyone to make the MC stronger from the beginning, just like Ardyn in FFXV. Used to live in a society of divine beings now lost and wants to recreate it and bring his people back - that’s Emet Selch FFXIV SHADOWBRINGERS Also kinda looks like Chaos in the ifrit form and the wings. of course Ultima from FFT, and FF12. But most of all, he thinks he can own someone else, just like Valisthea’s slavists. He’s exact opposite of Clive in everything starting from the former being divine and the second human. At first I would have imagined FFXVI with a human main villain like Barnabas, but when I understood these things of Ultima, it hit me. He/they had to be the one. Immediately in my top 5 FF villain ever.
Biblically speaking, Logos is God Himself. Yahweh, The True God, has a translation. It means "I AM". Israel also has a translation. It means: "He Struggles With God". So Israel means: "He Strives with I AM". To fight our better SELF and destroy our infernal shadow in order to evolve as people, is the true meaning of life. By doing so, we embrace Logos. Ultima, by showing that he despises Logos so much and wanting humanity to be a lifeless puppet, proves that he is not a true god. He is Negative Energy made manifest through the Emanations of God. (Emanations in Hebrew: Sephiroth) He is not the Creator of man. He is the Creator of man's weakness. He is literally NOT Yahweh. He is J-E-N-O-V-A.
@@CloudStrife-NoctisLucisCaelum yup, that is very right. I have a passion for theology and found the terms used pretty well there. Logos as “the word within”, the willingness and awareness, true freedom, the divine fire of consciousness inside each one of us. Logos as intended by Hermes Trimegistus. In fact Ultima using Logos in a negative connotation against Clive was on point, as the Logos elevates human beings to divine beings, and he didn’t want that at all. Edit: Oh my I just realised how connected it is to Sephiroth reading your comment more carefully now, it’s insane.

Ultima is definitely most similar to Bhunivelze in terms of personality and story. Ultima also takes inspiration from FF9 Necron in terms of design- colour scheme. Both had 4 hands too.
@Ephideltrance Yeah, they were extremely similar. Even the endings of 16 & 13-3 are similar with their deaths, resulting in a world in the image of our real world
I love the parallels with Christianity with Ultima, and also the differences. Ultima created humans to serve a single purpose, and they were reminiscent himself in a way. But humans were weak, and pathetic. And if they were a reflection of him, then what was he? So he turned away from them, and left them on their own, unable to accept their flaws as ones he bore. In the bible, humans turned away from God first, not the other way around. Ultima phrases it as being the same, saying that humanity turned away from him, despite it being the opposite. Fun parallels. And you can't pretend that's an accident, go rewatch the odin fight
This fight was way more entertaining than the sephiroth fight. You are literally fighting God. I really hope there are more quality fights like this inbthe future. Whoooo 😮😮😮
Now that I think about it.. In a twisted sense, the Iron Kingdom was right: Aether was a stain on Humanity. Maybe not for the reasons they thought but it was indeed a taint.
Man what's wrong with some of you? this was such a fun game and the setpiece bosses actually felt epic but you can't stop complaining about how boring you thought the combat was which just sounds like you didn't play it cause the combat was super fun. can you button mash through a lot of it if you really want to? yes. can you engage with the combat and make sick combos and kill things faster and better? yes. maybe you thought the boss fights were long and boring cause you weren't engaging with the combat enough to end the fights quickly
Preach, brother - I agree that the combat wasn't incredibly well-suited for the smaller mob battles since you can just kinda plow through them by mashing, but the boss battles consistently extracted the best out of the combat system and made it really fucking fun. Especially lategame. And Story, Visuals, Sound Design, Voice Acting? All top-notch. There's a lot to complain about, but a million things to love

Main story, side quests, characters, npcs, and the ending. All these are absolutely superb. Absolutely the best story I´ve ever played, the ending was the icing on the cake. While sad and brutal, its pure poetry. I´m afraid I may never play or watch a story this good again.

I'm glad it showed Ultima bursting out of Joshua. I was wondering why he was still keeping him sealed inside himself when Ultima was clearly still doing stuff. Turns out he was a hive mind and he was trying to hold back one of his... bodies?
Yeah I was a lil confused at first too, but essentially, yes.
25:23 this scene gives me chills . Clive’s resolve is absolute.
Ultimalius was fucking bananas. I'm not sure you will see a sequence like.that in gaming for a long while. Im so happy.
1:00:39 the music in this scene made me cry like a baby lmao. Genuinely such a beautiful soundtrack
"Final" Fantasy
I really think that it was Clive who survived at the end & took Joshua's name to write his story (just like how he took Cid's name).
If you pay attention to all of the side quest before setting off to the Origin, the game pretty much hinting that Clive will live as an Author, come back to Jill at sunrise, & the voice narrating at the end "and thus how our journey end" was none other than Clive.
I think that has merit.
i thought it was hinted that if joshua survived perhaps he also was able to save clive or if the game wasnt well recieves they could say clive died and thats the end
I just love final bosses in Final Fantasy games. They are always bigger than life. So epic!
I love the Asura’s Wrath References ❤
There were so many references to other work in this game, the 2 I can remember right now were the ninja you fight in the Greatwood has a move that really reminds me of Rock Lee from Naruto (the lotus technique where he izuna drops you) and then the finishing move on Typhon was a reference to Goku vs Freeza on Namek (the spirit bomb before he turns Super Saiyan)
Asura would be proud
Anyone get major FF8 Sorceress vibes from Ultima? Mainly his 2nd form when he absorbs all of the Ultima's. Face paint, godly space mage, crown/headpieces. Just feels like Ultimecia to me in a way.
Same here! glad im not the only person who thought this!
No doubt it's by design. They pay hommage to a lot of past FF, even the main battle theme starts in a very similar way to FFVIII's!

🔥"The only fantasy here is yours. And we shall be its final witness!"🔥
"I said! It's over!" (Finishes Ultima off with epic climatic clash!)
"Why... why did you do this ?"
This was honestly what devastated me the most... as if it was truly beyond all understanding for him.
This and Bahamut were definitely the biggest highlights of the game's bosses for me, followed by Titan.
So essentially Jesus his brother and Lucifer throw hands against God to prevent him from starting the Rapture? It’s what I’m getting from the story up to this point. The dialogue between them gives off that vibe.
Pretty much, yea lol
More the gnostic vision of Christianism. Jesus and Sophia (but showed as a male here, Clive) vs Demiurge/Satan, an evil fake god more than a demon king.
The ending is indescribable.
It’s just pure magic.

I love that line so much.
I loved this final boss, it will stay with me for a long time. I love how this game is all about brotherhood love

Odins max zantetsuken does more damage than it tho, its just that odin abilities are weak because they are only meant to charge zantetsuken

Honestly I don't know why the gamers rated this game lower than FF15 as this was a class act all the way and the setting was great, story was great, pacing was great and you actually had emotion showing at the goodbye scene as you'd been working with all these people for over 50 hours through decades of progress. I don't know about the other gamers but this game really hit the right spots.
I think people were just pissed because it was no longer using the battle mechanics of the other games and picked action. BTW how is that a secret ending when everyone sees it after the Credits?
I love how Ultima gets defeated by the most human thing to do in a fight, A PUNCH IN THE FACE
Damn right!
Only just now realized the two boys (and pup) at the end mirror Clive and Joshua
Ultima might be the creepiest FF big bad so far.
So true
I'm almost getting (at least on a physical level) Jenova vibes from Ultima. Just goes right into the uncanny valley and never lets up.
Used to live in a society of divine beings now lost and wants to recreate it and bring his people back - that’s Emet Selch FFXIV SHADOWBRINGERS
Also kinda looks like Chaos in the ifrit form and the wings.
of course Ultima from FFT, and FF12.
(Emanations in Hebrew: Sephiroth)
He is not the Creator of man.

Probably the craziest final boss fight since Bhunivelze in FF13.
Ultima is definitely most similar to Bhunivelze in terms of personality and story. Ultima also takes inspiration from FF9 Necron in terms of design- colour scheme. Both had 4 hands too.
@Ephideltrance Yeah, they were extremely similar. Even the endings of 16 & 13-3 are similar with their deaths, resulting in a world in the image of our real world
Can anyone let Ultima cast "Purgatorium" to see what it is all about?
Never in my life have I seen a more cinematic boss fight..

Preach, brother - I agree that the combat wasn't incredibly well-suited for the smaller mob battles since you can just kinda plow through them by mashing, but the boss battles consistently extracted the best out of the combat system and made it really fucking fun.
