Oh, and if you can find it, there was a band from Italy in the early 80s called DIOXINA which were touted as a punk band, but they sounded like an Italian Metallica to me. Also Living Death out of Germany is worth checking out.
Killing is My Business is such a fantastic album. The guitar work and Gar's drum-work are second to none. I'm also of the mindset that Testament has never released a bad album.
I hear you on that Testament claim, they have released more commercially driven albums, but there is still enough musicianship and creativity to make these essential purchases! Chuck Billy's vocals are worth the price of admission alone - the perfect growl! Alex is freakin' masterful, as well! Testaments new stuff crushes! Did you like the Killing Is My Business remaster? Lastly, did you hear Chris Poland's Damn The Machine album from years ago? Peace.
@@treff9226 The only album I'd say was particularly commercial is The Ritual, and while it's more melodic, it's got a full roster of very strong tracks.
@@chaosapiant yessir! Have never been let down by any Testament album! Can't say that about very many bands. Led Zep, Motorhead, AC/DC, Overkill, Mastodon, Meshuggah, Gojira, Pantera and Death Angel, Death and Emperor come to mind.....very exclusive club!
I love angry Dave on Killings is my business, his vocals are sick on the record
The one downside about the debut is that, if you take away the stupid 'These Boots' cover, you're left with only 7 songs and an album of less than 28 mins. Compare that to Kill em All and objectively speaking its kinda hard to put 28 mins of greatness ahead of 51 mins of greatness.
Can’t believe Mortal Sin where totally missed on this list. There was an article in one of the metal magazines in 1988 and claimed 4 bands were the next wave of thrash metal, Testament, Death Angel, Possessed and Mortal Sin. It’s a shame how such a great band is overlooked.
Yes mate! That first Mortal Sin album is SO good...
@@nigesavage5548 Wasn't very influential though, was it.
@@audiodead7302 who cares lmao
The Mortal Sin debut is a decent to good debut but it’s not that great. There’s many debuts far better.
@@manuelguzman1312 the point was they were considered to be part of the best of the second wave of thrash bands with testament, death angel, possessed and them. They are forgotten becuase they weren’t an American band, but Australian. Their debut holds up far better than most bands overtime, your opinion is your opinion, they are a bigger and better band than most in the list that was played, but continuously overlooked.
I knew you would not like Killian's vocals. It's an acquired taste but his chaotic and maniacal delivery fits PERFECTLY with the frenzied riffs on Eternal Nightmare. My personal favorite album of all-time. An 18 year old Demmel wrote 90% of the music here. And yes, the album cover is incredible.
🤘🏻
Dude hell yeah the best thrash album in that year imo just seen them after his liver bout still killed it seen them in 1990 what a show
I actually prefer Oppressing the Masses as it was one of the first thrash albums I heard back in high school outside of the Big 4, but Eternal Nightmare is a fantastic debut. I was lucky to see Vio-Lence perform in Philly last year and they were KILLER, as is their latest EP. Too bad Perry Strickland is gone, now they will probably never follow it up, but at least I got to cross them off my concert bucket list (which I thought I would never be able to do).
@@cthulhuferrigno6547 I was at that same philly show. in fact, I'm the one Sean is pointing at here at the 2:19 mark on the following video link (ua-cam.com/video/HLyJ2PXLMmU/v-deo.html) . Long story as to why. Anyway, both of their albums are great but very different. Oppressing is not as frenzied, has more midtempo material and Sean's voice is a bit more controlled. It's also natural to prefer an album that you had your initial impressions from. I just love EN's rawness and those style off riffs.
coroner violence and nuclear assault all are better than he placed here
Great list, I'm glad to see Kreator and Exodus debut at higher place
Also huge respect for including Coroner, best teutonic Thrash Metal band, but Mental Vortex is such an album, damn
🤘🏻
As a big Metallica fanboy, you’re right about Kill ‘Em All. I think it helps I am also a RTL kind of guy.
⚡️
I like Death Magnetic more than KEA album... But KEA was groundbreaking album, and it hit waaaaay different back in 1983 than it does today...
@@Shiljamannn yea they suck now
Love everything early and KEA was the one I heard any everything changed.. the RTL and MOP came out only getting better. I even love AJFA but yeah RTL prob a better album but you always remember your first lol.
In retrospect....Kill Em All was written by teenagers! 😂 So yeah....
Great S.O.D. album. Though many have tried, none have articulated the legacy of Jimmi Hendrix as well as they did in “The Ballad of Jimmi Hendrix”
YOU'RE DEAD
I much preferred The ballad of Kurt Cobain, for obvious reasons. 😂😂
I was in the Bay Area when all the great thrash was happening. Saw Exodus so many times, I've lost track. Sacrilege B.C., Vio-lence, Death Angel, Possessed, Attitude Adjustment. I could list so many more. What a great time.
It still blows my head that the guitarist from "Seven Chrches" went on to form and become the main guitarist in PRIMUS!!!
A bit of a lesser known band, but Atrophy's 1988 debut album "Socialized Hate" is one of my favorite thrash metal debut albums at the moment. It's filled with lots of great guitar work, great drumming, and really good vocals. The band has been compared to other bands such as Testament, Forbidden, Nuclear Assault, Sacred Reich and Vio-lence. As of now the band has only put out two albums and are supposedly working on a third album but that has yet to be released.
Kill em All is a great album, but Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets are damn near perfect albums which vastly improved on everything they did in their debut.
I’m not a Metallica shill, but I can’t deny that Puppets is a perfect metal album.
@@sadboi7537 I honestly think MOP is a tad overrated. I much prefer RTL.
I wouldn't consider Ride the Lightning Thrash. For me it is rather classic Metal, inspired by NWOBHM but one step further.
Show No Mercy is more an extreme speed metal album than an out and out thrash record to me. Still absolute beast of an album and completely agree with the perfection ranking.
It's personally my favourite Slayer record. I think it's much better than Reign in Blood.
Extreme? It’s way more NWOBHM influenced and their least extreme record. Having said that, it’s one of my favorites from Slayer.
@@facelessandnameless I known the album Show no mercy when it was released...We discovered Slayer ! Haha I was 15 years old, and I am still 15 when I listen to this album ! As good as Kill 'em all to me !
Fantastic. I know Thrash isn't your favorite, but you did the genre proud today. I love seeing Kreator's debut so high. It's almost barbaric and I love it. Not a huge Exodus fan so maybe they would be slightly lower for me. I agree that Welcome to Hell isn't very thrashy, but if you're going to include it, it's got to be perfection. I love Slayer, I don't love Tom's vocals (except on Reign in Blood), but he brings a wild energy on Show No Mercy that fits the music.
It was a fun little project. I actually really enjoy the videos that take me into new territory the most.
Great list. I'm 52 now, so I bought nearly all of these as they came out, or at least had tapes from mates! Total favourites from the time.. Testament, Kreator, Coroner and Death Angel's first records are more or less the best from the debuts of that time. Metallica, Anthrax, Slayer, Voivod- all totally made much better records later on. Big shout for the Celtic Frost record as well.
🤘🏻
I'm your age and honestly I don't think you can rank these properly unless you grew up in that era. These bands meant more to people of my generation than just how well they were produced or what technical skill level they have. If you were at a bon fire and tried to throw some of those "perfect" albums on you might get thrown in, but "mid" Suicidal will keep it going. Even though they might not be "perfection", Suicidal was very influential in the anit authority, skater and BMX scene (btw, I consider Rocky George to be in my personal top 4 with Friedman, Vai and Skolnick, he was revolutionary to a lot of kids). When I first head Slayer, Suicidal, Anthrax, S.O.D., Testament and Metallica that was all brand new and game changing. We would pass those tapes around in middle school secretly like it was contraband, and there was no YT or internet so the only way to even hear about them was in underground ways. I'm talking about someone's cousin in San Fran or NY taping a radio show and mailing it to OH so that band has to be something special to grab that kind of attention. We didn't have hi-def headphones to parse every note. We didn't care about guitar skill. They got your attention with the attitude and raw energy that punched through that fuzzy tape. Sh*t that scared your parents and p*ssed Tipper Gore off (Simon knows what I'm talking 'bout!). That's no disrespect to the list, a lot of those bands are great. And I guess to be fair is what do you consider great debut. Are you looking at it on a technical scientific level or how it changed the direction of metal music as a whole. I hope not sounding like "that guy", but to me its not a fair comparison if you didn't live through it and are judging it after 40 years of metal evolution. That's just my humble opinion.
@@BulletProofSoul1029 There was so much punk energy on all those early debuts.. especially Metallica, Slayer and Anthrax's first records.. Just get it made and released. Thrash totally changed Metal forever. Completely changed me. The heaviest and hardest Metal available early 80s was Maiden's first 3 records, Venom and Motorhead. For me, I always thought they were the top influences in early Thrash bands, and obviously the punk scene, especially The Exploited, Discharge and GBH. When Ride The Lightning and Spreading The Disease hit the decks though- fuck me that was the gamechangers. You can't make a second record without recording the first, but hell man, Ride The and Disease just changed me forever. I don't know how many hours I logged in air-guitaring to those albums, but the cut down pool cue I used as an axe had a worn away groove where the fake plectrum would hit. Both Anthrax and Metallica just were my favourite bands in the world for like 6 years solid.. seems longer.. And Justice For All is my favourite record ever made still.. those riffs and chugs \m/... When Testament came out in..87?.. That was gamechanger for me as well. I was in residential art college for a week out of every month on a job training scheme, and that Testament tape was worn out and snapped in our dorm. Stellar days.
@@sichinook3793 Totally agree. The first time I heard Suicidal Tendencies "I Saw Your Mommy" and was like "WHAT IS THIS!" There was a girl in my neighborhood (in OHIO) who was the 2nd ranked female BMXer in the country. She knew a lot of California kids from being in that scene and they bring California punk and thrash music to town when they had competitions in the Midwest. That music grabbed you and shook you by your neck. I couldn't tell you or care what "mode" or "phrasing" they were playing in, all I knew is I felt that sh*t in my soul. Same for Slayer, Metallica, Anthrax, Voivod and even punk like Bad Brains and Dead Kenned even Janes Addiction. These guys a couple years older than me used to have parties and jam at one of their grandparents barn in the country and they played "Whores" in like '86 and man Navarro was something fresh and different too. I can remember even now the circumstances around hearing those bands for the 1st time. On a sided note most these guys played Ibanez and I've been in love with that era's RG5 series since. Anyway yeah, to me it was about being on the forefront of the movement where your taking a chance because its new and never done before, but you don't care because your about your art without the old rules. And it really was art because now after knowing a little bit more about music, its more impressive knowing they still had knowledgeable about composition and theory. They weren't just creating something new based purely on chaos (I know some Slayer haters will disagree, but eff 'em). It reminds me a lot of the J-Metal scene today with all the great talent coming from the young kids in Japan. Especially the ladies in Nemophila. If your not familiar with them, I'd recommend going on their official channel and starting with some of their live rehearsal covers playlist, especially AC/DC and KISS, as starter then go to their originals. They're honestly my favorite band at the moment. A lot if talent all the way around. Any cheers, bro. Great chat.
@@BulletProofSoul1029 I saw your mommy..... one of my all time greatest songs.
Slayer and possessed in perfection?
OBJECTIVELY CORRECT
YES
Testament's debut album is one of the greatest debut albums of all time, any genre of metal. It's stupid good.
Can't argue with this - it truly is far better than any of the 'Big 4' debuts.
This was THE best thrash episode I've seen in years! You nailed it with incisive, knowledgeable and very entertaining comments! The roster of thrash albums was perfection!
Thanks
Awesome list! I'm 51 and grew up immersed in all this stuff... Great to see Kreator so high (most days Endless Pain is my fav Kreator album). For me: Coroner, Forbidden and Destruction would all be in the Fantastic category, and Annihilator, Toxik and Venom would be lower - no way those albums are as good as the others in the Fantastic category. But this is the sort of discussion that I could have for hours and hours and never get bored!! Great job - you have a new subscriber and looking forward to checking out your other vids 🤘
I never get tired of discovering new bands in genres like 80s thrash, nwobhm, etc. Awesome work
Atrophy -Socialized Hate
Mordred -Fools Game
Sabbat -History Of A Time To Come
Xentrix -Shattered Existence
Exumer -Possessed By Fire
Whiphlash -Power And Pain
Rigor Morits self titled
Edit Sacred Reich Ignorance
@Dániel Adorján Yeah Power and Pain is awesome, I forgot to include that one.
xentrix is so fucking good and underrated
Excellent video and a great topic. Like comments from others, it was great to see some of the lesser known bands. I'm 56 and got into hard rock / metal in the late 70s so I was an all out metalhead by the time thrash appeared and spent all my money on the new releases. Totally understand that you can't do all 80s Thrash debuts in one video, so would love to see a part 2. Here's some suggested 80s Thrash debuts that you might not know, I've listed them in release date order by Band / Album Title / Country and I have avoided demos and EPs and just listed the debut full length album:
1984 Piledriver Metal Inquisition Canada
1984 Living Death Vengeance Of Hell Germany

1988 Sabbat History Of A Time To Come UK
1989 Powermad Absolute Power USA
1989 Slammer The Work Of Idle Hands UK
1989 Evildead Annihilation Of Civilization USA
Show no mercy is definitely perfection. Great songs, especially Metal storm/face the slayer
Crap production.
Great list and you do a good job explaining why and where you rank the albums. I started listening to thrash in the late '80s and I think it's hard sometimes to compare a 1983 release to a 1986 one, say. It all evolved so quickly, with every band trying to find their sound.
Great list! I love all these albums. They all hold a special place in my heart. I do realize music is subjective so its on the listener. There was no bad so that is good! Off the top of my head I did wonder how Death, Sacred Reich, Sacrifice, Rigor Mortis, Metal Church, Whiplash, Exhumer (feel like I'm missing something) did not make the cut. Anyway I enjoyed it! Thank you. Look forward to watching the Sophmore edition. Thrash Til' Death
Granted they only had two albums under their name but Carnivore's "Carnivore" is probably my favorite debut of all time. Whiplash's Power and Pain was good too.
Testament - The Legacy. Great debut…..and still their best album IMO.
I’m partial to The Gathering but The Legacy is top 3 for sure.
It's between The Legacy and Souls of Black for me. I'd say Legacy is better overall, but Souls definitely has the best solos.
@@stephenhughes5156 Hmm, not sure I agree. Souls in Black I think is their weakest record…..albeit good solos! Production on it is terrible as well.
The Gathering is incredible, Practice What you Preach and The New Order are more refined.
@@necroplastful I really have a great appreciation for all 4 albums since Skolnick returned as well. They all have some incredible work on them.
Nice list, but I have to say the fact that you didn’t include Sacred Reich’s only proves the point that their debut, Ignorance, is criminally underrated. Check ‘em’ out, you won’t be disappointed.
Agreed. Everything by Sacred Reich is underrated
Ride the Lightning is my favorite Metallica album.
Mine too! Next to it is master of puppets then hardwired.
Ditto my dude or dudet

@@MetalTrenches so, can we expect something like you did with Melo Death Bands (e.g. 2nd, 3rd, 4th releases, and so on)?
Other bands to consider for a Part 2 with more '80s thrash debuts -- Metal Church, Anvil, Exciter, Iron Angel, Sacred Reich, Sarcofago, Poison (the German band), Running Wild, Morbid, Master, Slaughter (the Canadian band), Repulsion, Holy Terror

Hirax
Living Death

I’d urge you to give Fear of Tomorrow another chance. My first listening left me feeling underwhelmed too, but after a second and third listen I picked up on a lot of the great details I missed the first time. I love that album now and honestly prefer it over by inheritance.
I’m sure I’ll circle back
its amazing. First ranking when I concur with you in the "perfection" category.
Greetings for Chile
Hey man, thanks for coming up with another thrash-video. Love your thoughts, ideas and recomondations. Pure Love!!
May i suggest you another old-school-thrash band from the 80s...please give ONSLAUGHT a spin. For me one ot the best thrash band to this day with the greatest vocals in the game.
Best wishes
Thanks
I love your lists, bro. Great content!
Another notable (if obscure-ish) 80's album would be Sabbat's History of a Time to Come. Martin Walkyier and Andy Sneap are insane.
Interesting video. Keep listening =) ! Some bands you might like are Exumer, Attomica, Holy Terror, Living Death, Hermetica, Sacrifice, Iron Angel, Piledriver, etc etc. Long live thrash!
Very good job dude! You included everything and everyone in this list. I'm sure that nobody has been left complaining!!
lol if only that was ever the case
Very comprehensive tier ranking! Don't see Whiplash. Their debut was 1985.
Good call. That's a great album. Love the tone of the guitars.
Glad to see that you put Suicidal Tendencies and D.R.I on the list. I used to get into arguments with people about the first Suicidal Tendencies album. Everybody insited it was a punk album, but the lead solos made me think it was a heavy metal album/band. Have you ever checked out Second Coming by Battalion of Saints? That's another band I get into arguments with people about them. Sure, the hung their boots in the punk camp, but Second Coming reminds me a lot of Show No Mercy by Slayer. Any thoughts on Discharge? (Especially Hear Nothing, See Nothing, Say Nothing) or G.I.S.M from Japan? Now THAT'S "CROSSOVER"!
Your best video yet. your passion truly shines here
Thanks. Definitely a labor of love.
Absolutely loved this. Definitely my favorite because I loved this era as a teenager! I saw several of these bands live in Portland back then at a place called The Starry Night. You picked many bands on here as Perfection that I actually chose myself, lol. My only agreement is, Possessed Seven Churches. I understand your point but this album is Death Metal.
80s thrash metal...right in my wheelhouse! I graduated in '90, and this stuff was my LIFE! Even though I liked the "Big 4", I was a big fan of the "other" bands, like Testament, Exodus, Overkill, etc.
Also LOVED S.O.D. and D.R.I.!
Lol me to all the way so many great bands
Love these types of videos! Like a history lesson in and of itself. Although we have very different opinions, it's great fun to hear different perspectives on something we all hold very near and dear here.
Not complaining you didn't include it (I realize there's probably 50 more debuts you could have included and people would still whine about something missing 😂) but for me, one of the absolute BEST debuts, if not number one, is Rage's Reign of Fear. Arguably wears a lot of speed/heavy metal on it's sleeves, but at it's core it's still thrash thrashing mad to me! Anyways, love the videos bro. Keep keeping metal alive 👍
🤘🏻
Great video! I like how you also included obscure and fringe bands' debut albums. I also agree Kill 'em All from Metallica is not better than Show No Mercy, Bonded By Blood, or The Legacy from Slayer, Exodus, and Testament. I've seen no one making the argument as to how good albums are compared to each other in the grand scheme of thrash metal.
Just a point about timing. The argument in favour of Kill'em all is that it was ahead of its time. No point comparing Kill'em all to The Legacy (for example) which came later.
Enjoyed that. Generally have same taste as you. Heading over to that death metal tier list now. Just would have rated Morbid Visions higher. Love that album.
ENJOY! Fair warning, I feel like my takes on death metal are a bit spicier lol
Razor is my favorite band so I might be biased, but Staces vocals on Violent Restitution and Evil Invaders are extremely good.
Whiplash (Power and Pain) and Hirax (Raging Violence) were missed on this list 😈⚔️🔥
Razor is vastly underappreciated. Love those guys.
Power and Pain would be on my Fantastic list for sure!
Solid list and rankings although i firmly believe that Laaz Rockits "Annihilation Principle" can be considered a thrash debut since that album is where they migrated from heavy/power metal to thrash. But great job none the less my man.
Fun video. Agreed on most of it. Just would have ranked Voivod and Nuclear Assault higher but had blast watching it.
You do make a good point, when I was a teenager... 1983/1989 Bathory was totally considered a thrash band. In fact Thrash covered an awful lot of different styles, which is probably why Thrash seems less generic than newer genres. I mean put Celtic Frost next to Slayer next to Megadeth next to Bathory, they all sound completely different and individual, compared to say NWOSDM which all sounds very similar.
Wonder where Demolition Hammers Tortured Existence would land.
Great list man, keep up the good work!
Thanks
Very good list, agree with 99% of it. I would put Vio-lence at the top as Eternal Nightmare is just a thrash masterpiece. It took me a long time to appreciate Kilian's voice, much similar for it taking a long time to appreciate a voice like King Diamond's. Once you get adapted to it though it really allows you to soak it in and appreciate the body of work. It helps define Vio-lence, you couldn't have that band without him. Eternal Nightmare just stands by its self, it's an amazing album.
Great list with some fantastic debut albums. I gotta say I thought you would include uk band Slammer’s ‘the work of idle hands’ released on Warner bros in ‘89 , produced by Mark Dodson and considered by many to be one of the best. It’s an album well worth checking out regardless. ✊💙🤘🎼
I actually haven't listened to a decent number of these. Or at least it's been a long time. I think my thrash taste is similar to yours though, I like it evil and aggressive. That Morbid Saint album rips. Great list brother!
Although I don’t necessarily agree with some of these choices, this is a great video! Thanks for sharing it!
Thanks. Honestly it’s way more fun when we don’t all agree
Great video 👍 it's like a tour of thrash history.
Thanks
The curious thing about all this is that without Kill'em all, none of the other bands would have been what they were or are.
Debatable. But even if that were 100% true, it wouldn't change how I feel about it here.
Man watching this tier list made me realize I was WAY TOO HARSH on a lot of these albums in the discord lol. After watching this video im definitely remaking the list because there are some I enjoy better than others. I think its cause felt pressured with some of the people in discord since didn't wanna make them mad, but in doing that, feel like wasn't really honest with my tier list. I do agree that all the albums are worth a listen, its just there's certain styles of thrash i enjoy more than others, like Im more into the heavy metal/speed metal side of thrash. There's like a couple personally im just not a fan at all like D.R.I. and Sepulturas, but the rest I had fun relistening to, just maybe I wont try cramming these in the span of 4 days lol. Also nice tier list and hope you do a sophomore video because one of my biggest issues personally listening to all the debuts was that I like they're sophomore album more, but there are some debuts i prefer and some that grew on me a lot more than i thought they did. Hope you make more of these tier lists and show off more new music too since been helping me expand my taste in music by a lot.
Always glad that these videos inspire this level of thinking
@@MetalTrenches yeah thanks for doing what you do, it really is special
Great video, it represents a large part of my musical tastes from the age of 13 to 19.
We need a part 2 for sure. I got some examples of albums for part 2:
Metallica-Ride the Lightning (absolute masterpiece)
Megadeth-Peace Sells... But Who's Buying
Anthrax-Spreading the Disease (first album with Frank Bello on bass and Joey Belladonna on vocals)
Slayer-Hell Awaits
Overkill-Taking Over
Exciter-Violence and Force (you missed Heavy Metal Maniac on this tier list)
Suicidal Tendencies-Join the Army (another band you missed in this video)
Tankard-Chemical Invasion
Destruction-Eternal Devastation
Sodom-Persecution Mania
Dark Angel-Darkness Descends
Exodus-Pleasures of the Flesh
Venom-Black Metal
Possessed-Beyond the Gates (this was their last album until 2019 in which during that long hiatus, Jeff Becerra suffered a spinal cord injury after being shot in an armed robbery and became paraplegic)
Savage Grace-After the Fall from Grace (you missed their debut album, also this was their last album until their upcoming new album which comes out on May 5th)
Don't forget Testament's The New Order
@@chrisheathcote3697 He forgot The Legacy!
@@robertsparling917 Suicidal Tendencies was on here, he put it in good tier.
Yeah, most of the thrash bands improved in their second studio release.
I think. I don't know.
For me Thrash became boring when it got that touch of cold perfection in the later 80s. It began with Testament's debut album. You know, I loved the Legacy Demo#1, but then I was dissapointed, when The Legacy came out. It was so clean and polished.
I'm surprised to see Coroner this low, it's ome of my favorites! A few great albums missing from the list that I think you could like, most glaring omission being Infernal Majesty - None Shall Defy. I'm also sure you'll like others such as Rigor Mortis' self titled, Hellwitch - Syzygial Miscreancy, Ripping Corpse - Dreaming With the Dead, Demolition Hammer - Tortured Existence, Skeletal Earth - Eulogy for a Dying Fetus, Protector - Golem, and some tech thrash: Watchtower - Energetic Disassembly, Sieges Even - Life Cycle. Mekong Delta - self titled, and Target - Mission Executed (those last two aren't the bands' best albums, but still worth checking out, and I also recommend checking out their later material)
Also happy to see Toxik rated this high. A fantastic album imdeed! Okay, they all are, not a single bad album on this list (although DRI and ST's albums aren't very high on my list either. I love many of DRI's later albums but ST just never connected with me). Keep up the good work my man!
Also: WHOAH! I see that Sacred Reich's Ignorance is not on the list! I know it's impossible to include everything, but this is one of the big ones!
Only so much time in the day
@@MetalTrenches Haha, true But I do hope you will find time to check some of these out eventually. Rigor Mortis, Ripping Corpse and Protector should be right up you alley; very fast and violent!
Kreator and Testament are by far my favorite thrash metal bands.🤘🏻 Amazing debut albums.😍
Pretty much all the staples of that period here.
Great you included Fear of Tomorrow, the title track rips!
But Infernal Overkill is still, for me, the, thrash album bar none......ok, tinny sounding drumming an understatement, and not gonna go overboard on the vocals, lol, but irregardless of those things, the riffs slay and the whole thing produces an atmosphere of which seems to have been a thing of that era. I had most of these albums at the time, and i was more up for what might follow from Destruction than any of them.
And yeah, sophomore albums a great idea : ))
Thanks man. Now I'm going to revisit some of these.
Love these kind of videos! 🤘
Love making them, glad it's resonating.
Great list I will say one of my favorite debut thrash albums and I cant remember if I recommended or not as Defiance's product of society
I loved the video congratulations 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Great vid! Wondering where LAAZ ROCKIT and EXHORDER were though?
Omg can people just be happy for what they get? lol
Really great list love to see bands like Sadus etc included
I would also add Evil Dead there first album great and really underrated imo also possibly could add Watchtower, Realm and Sacred Reich to name a few
Agree woth most. Bonded id put in top tier along with violence bc amazing. swap out the more blackened stuff. probably forbidden and heathen a tad higher. No mortal sin!! Excellent video
Best thrash debuts?
In no particular order
RIP- Coroner
Morbid Visions- Sepultura
Morbid Tales- Celtic Frost
History Of A Time To Come- Sabbat
The Legacy- Testament
Uncertain Future- Forced Entry
World Circus- Toxik
Metallica-Kill Em All
There's many more but those are my favorites.
I wasn't really into Slayer, Exodus, Possessed, etc......
Great video. Check out Infernal Majesty "None Shall Defy". Killer killer thrash debut from Canada in 1987.
Wonder where you'd put Onslaught - Power from Hell, Sabbat - History of a Time to Come, Acid Reign - Moshkinstein, Slammer - The Work of Idle Hands, Deathwish - At the Edge of Damnation, Civilised Society? - Scrap Metal, Hobbs Angel of Death - Hobbs Angel of Death, Hydra Vein - Rather Death than False of Faith, Kat - Metal and Hell, Hallows Eve - Tales of Terror, Holy Terror - Terror and Submission, Blessed Death - Kill or Be Killed, Toranaga - Bastard Ballads, Xentrix - Shattered Existence, Deathrow - Satan's Gift, Vectom - Speed Revolution, Atomkraft - Future Warriors, Living Death - Vengeance of Hell, Violent Force - Malevolent Assault of Tomorrow, Assassin - The Upcoming Terror, Exhumer - Possessed by Fire, At War - Ordered to Kill, Whiplash - Power and Pain, Vendetta - Go and Live ... Stay and Die, Cerebral Fix - Life Sucks... and Then You Die!, Virus - Pray for War, D.A.M. - Human Wreckage, Broken Bones - Dem Bones, English Dogs - Invasion of the Porky Men, Sacrilege - Behind the Realms of Madness, Hellbastard - Heading for Internal Darkness, Energetic Krusher - Path to Oblivion, Infernäl Mäjesty - None Shall Defy, Re-Animator - Deny Reality, Decadence Within - This Lunacy, Metal Messiah - Honour Among Thieves, to name a few.
You listed the real classics! The Real Metal.
Nice one, although more than a few are not 100% Thrash (as you mentioned) and missed a few notable ones - Sacred Reich being the one I missed the most. Also there's not a single Brit band, great debuts there - Sabbat and Xentrix for example and then personally there are two 80's debuts I personally love - Watchtower and an ultra uknown christian band called Sacrament (ops this one is from 1990, actually). Also in the hybrids crossover/thrash, Acrophet had a great one. Anyway, there's a lot of great stuff in that era ;)
Not sure if you meant the lyrics of "Eighteen" were cringy in the context of anthrax or if you think it was actually written by anthrax, but it's a cover of an alice cooper song from 1971
Flotsam's Doomsday For The Deceiver needs to be higher in my opinion
Great video great ranking,,,,,,,,I would put Celtic frost and Metallica higher on the list but other than that I think you did this list justice
Great list and have to say I would agree with all the rankings except for Violence which I would put top tier. Please do your self a favor and check out Forced Entry's debut Uncertain Future. It is fantastic! Their second release As Above...So Below smokes anything any band on that list has ever put out. Thanks for the video.
🤘🏻
Bonded by blood, the legacy, and show no mercy, nothing beats em.
Suicidal Tendencies debut IS The Pinnicle of Music. Punk couldn't go any further to the extremities. And Punk is just full tilt Rock n Roll. Perfect album. They followed it up with the Greatest Crossover album of all time Join the Army. Another Perfect album.
I fucking LOVE Testament The Legacy! Those "chopping meat with a butcher's knife" riffs are simply amazing, and the entire album is a scorcher. Holy fucking shit, First Strike Is Deadly, Curse of the Legions of Dead, Raging Waters, Over the Wall, etc etc.... Ecstacy (to me). Also I LOVE the original production, which makes it all sound so sinister and evil. First Strike Still Deadly remake had none of that sinister feel to it.
Talk about evil sinister vibe, Exodus Bonded By Blood is also on my top tier. Holy shit! Other favorites out of the list: Annihilator (Aliiiice IN HELL!), Kreator, Metallica (debatable though. See below), Megadeth (also see below), Death Angel (Mistress of PAAAAAIIIIN! Lady Domination! ... ), Forbidden (!!!!!! FUCK ME IT IS SOOO FUCKING GOOD!... Through Eyes of GLASS!!!), SOD, Heathen (love that album, Vio-Lence, and Slayer (see below though), Possessed!!
Finally I would say many of these bands FUCKING EXCELLED on their sophomore albums, like Flotsam and Jetsam, Slayer, Anthrax, Kreator, Megadeth, DRI, Sepultura, Suicidal Tendencies, and Dark Angel.
I would have expected Heavy Metal Maniac in here. Feel The fire and Kill 'em All are perfection tier for me, Testament and Slayer as well, that's for sure. I would've included Sceptic's Apocalypse as well. Morbid Tales is at least Fantastic Tier for me.
Your ranking is pretty good.
Couple to add are Whiplash - Insult to Injury and I.N.C. (Indestructible Noise Command) - The Visitor & Razorback.
Also for ST id say Join the Army is more Metal (great Crossover album for sure!)
and so is that ep with Stymee (ST Why Me?! on Bass?) CBH/FLSDJV
Whiplash debut is called Power and Pain.
Some classics there but I would have to add Anacrusis suffering hour 🤘🏻great list though and agree with the perfection ones 👍🏻
Good ranking, but also FUCK YEAH, MORBID SAINT SPECTRUM OF DEATH!!! I remember listening to that album for the first time in quite a while a year or so ago, and Goddammit, it reminded me right away why it's one of my favorite Thrash Metal albums of all time. It's so fast, and it's borderline reckless. I was really glad to see some more love for it.
Banger
It’s nice to see morbid saint get talked about, it’s not often that you’ll see people talk about that album. I have that album as my back patch on my vest and once in a while I’ll get someone yelling out morbid saint and throwing up the horns at me
I have Spectrum of Death as my back patch as well, but I get people thinking it's Eddie from iron maiden
Today at work I saw two women with Kiss T-shirts and a man (probably the boyfriend from the first Kiss girl I saw) with a Slayer's Diabolus album cover T-shirt. I talked about rock music only to the second girl, because at the first time I saw the couple I had a fear of talking to them, and at the two following moments I saw them they were eating probably, and then playing volleyball togheter (for this one maybe I should go there and make the horns sign, talk about the album and the band, but when I came back because I was working, they had gone...)
@@sumcallmecaptain8847 Lol, it's funny, but maybe sad too. Both characters are really similar, though.
@@WilderAutumnBlaze yeah you're right if you're not in the know, It can be confused with the self titled art work of Iron maiden
Spectrum of death is probably the best thrash metal album ever made.. imho
The AI generated chapters on these videos can be unintentionally funny. Especially with one called “Stay Mad” lol
One that's missing that I think you'll definitely like is Suffering Hour by Anacrusis. Check it out.
Welcome To Hell was the first thrash album but Kill Em' All was the one that got thrash really up and running,
Man- that Venom LP.. first time I heard that was NYE 85 ish when I was 15, with my mate Paul in his neighbour's house, Steve, who was a huge metalhead and a few years older than us. He put it on, gave us some awful cider based punch and our first joints.. Love that record to this day. Cycle ride home was interesting.. lot of giggling and crashing. It's weird, but I can't remember when they started calling it Thrash.. it was all metal still mostly early 85 as there just wasn't a lot of bands a round getting signed.. mostly, if anything it was called speed metal.. Venom definitely called what they did Black Metal from the get go, early 80s onwards.. and that's pretty much the only genre I remember in the early days, which was largely self publicity from Cronos and the lads. Thrash only started to stick, from my memory anyway, around the end of 86 and into 87 as the band explosion in the wake of Metallica and Anthrax, who probably lead the way in terms of visibility at the start.
Love that this video could inspire such a happy memory.
@@MetalTrenches Totally mate.. this kicked off a few.. like getting my first Metallica and Anthrax t shirts and instantly cutting the sleeves off.. Damage Inc and I Am The Law respectively.. my huge white Nike high tops as well.. ripped jeans and leather painted jacket.. I painted the Ride The Lightning cover on it. I was so lucky that Thrash hit at the time I was turning 16. It was having your own thing.. even traditional Heavy Metal fans looked at us weird as we had that goofy Anthrax and early Metallica look.. especially the baggy Bermuda shorts and a leather jacket haha. That period, 85- 89.. before the Black Album landed and fucked Thrash almost overnight, as well the rise of Grunge.. those four years of pure Thrash were amazing. I see the same look and feel for the younger generations of Metal heads now with the rise of New Wave of death metal and deathcore.. they are totally loving it and look like they belong to something.. it's fucking awesome.. Metal is probably the best it's ever been right now in terms of bands and sounds.. last 10 years have been truly exceptional in terms of releases and shows.
You sir, are an absolute beauty. Love the content.
🤘🏻
great ranking! gotta check that new toxik album for sure.
SO good
@@MetalTrenches yeah im already halfway through, its ripping!
Each their own ofc but Kill em all should be way higher. It's one of those albums that made thrash metal. Kill em all was released 5 years before the legacy from testament for example. Metallica set the example with that album and encouraged other bands to play thrash metal. (And bonded by blood should be way higher , classic)
Disagree with a couple but either way great list and very enjoyable fun video. R.I.P Jim Durkin of dark angel (February 1965 / March 8 2023)
When those came out Anthrax, S.O.D., and Metallica, followed by Manowar, then Wasp for easier listening, were the biggest bands in my school. Surprising for a podunk Ohio school of around 400 total students. Teenage me would have a vastly different list. Current me, especially since these are the debuts, align pretty close. Except Possessed. Never could get into them. Much preferred Infernal Majesty for the blackened thrash. But it's your list and a damn fine one.
Thanks
Love the list... pretty much we have the same taste. I was looking for Sacred Reich but not in the list
If you liked Toxik's debut, I think you would like the Wasteland demo they did in 1986. It shines a ton with Heart Attack and Wasteland.
Thanks. Nice Static-X Avatar btw.
Speak English Or Die is my favorite Crossover Thrash metal album. Hardcore Punk and Thrash Metal is such a good mix.
