- On this episode, we’re joined by Kirk Hammett of Metallica to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the “Kill ‘Em All” album. In this special installment of Metal Mayhem ROC, we go back in time for an in-depth look back at the rehearsals & the recording of the album that took place in our hometown of Rochester, NY in 1983.
In this feature conversation, Kirk gets reacquainted with some of the people who lived it with Metallica, both professionally & on the friendship side of the relationships with the band. Showcased in this exclusive interview are over 40 never seen before candid photos from the studio & the surrounding Rochester area, Lakeshore Record Exchange, The Riverboat concert with Raven & so much more, all of which have been unearthed from personal collections & scrapbooks! In addition, we re-visit with the MetLife Stadium (NJ) August 2023 gigs & Kirk reveals what his passion is for New Jersey outside of music (hint: sand & surf), and he opens up about his fervor for Deep Purple & Tommy Bolin.
This is a true trip down Heavy Metal memory lane & a unique conversation that unveils the human & personal side of this Heavy Metal legend, brought to you exclusively from Metal Mayhem ROC.

This is gold, thank you all for making this possible, these memorys are the stuff that truly matters the most. To relate as real people, to see the past, the struggle of the early days with no money, no clue of when your next meal, or bottle of beer, or if there is another meal, or beer, or place to sleep, was the reality of these guy's. There was no plan "B". It was do or die, against all odds, and they did it! All my respect and love to the boy's. Metallica is the greatest band in the history of metal, in my opinion the best band of all time. Keep creeping Kirk!!!😊
Thank you for taking the time to speak about what you thought about the commentary. Was our pleasure to share this gold content with fellow fans. I invite you to check out our website www.metalmayhemroc.com
Finally we know who said "bass solo, take one"
I always thought it was cliff lol
Nope..it was Andrew.
How is Andrew's last name spelled? That should be entered into Wikipedia.

Deep, deep trivia!
I was front row at the load tour in worcestor mass. At the end the guys went around shaking hands n stuff. James kinda just walked by smiled and waved Lars ran around and smacked everybody's hand but Jason grabbed my hand like we were gonna arm wrestle n we touched fore heads and Kirk shook my hand with a very firm grip n said "thank you for being here" to me. I'll never forget that
That's the Kirk that we know and love. Thank you for listening watching and taking the time to comment. I invite you to go to our website www.metalmayhemroc com

i was there ass well.....loud!!!
This interview was just casually sitting in my recommended feed. So glad I clicked through… The amount of value this interview serves toward Metallica and metal/rock history is insane!
Thank you for that. We really appreciate you finally clicking on it. Lol. I invite you to check out the rest of our content as we try to present cool interviews and other stuff for you guys.www.metalmayhemroc.com
Kirk is so down to earth. (And patient). You can tell how caught up in the busyness of Metallica and the music industry (he is). Kirk's old buddies are funny as hell. This podcast is the best.
It’s cool how animated Kirk gets, I’ve rarely seen him get excited in interviews 😂😂
It wasn't your ordinary interview. You were privy to like a fly on the wall conversation.
Hes clean these days :). Benzos take the life out of people. edit: and alcohol
It's always a treat hearing new (old) Cliff Burton stories. Great Show!!! Thanks Kirk!!!
Yes it is indeed. Thank you for listening and commenting
i love how kirks laugh or voice hasnt changed
Kirk is really a humble guy..
Very humble. Good natured. We spent a bit of time speaking that never made it to the final interview. Really was generous with his time and it was a cool discussion.
We definitely need another one of these but with James and lars and Kirk and them reacting to the ride the lightning era.
Seeing color pics of them in that studio is just mind-blowing. I've had images of my own in my head for so long.
Thank you for commenting and viewing. Bang that head that does not bang...
Given their budget its actually not surprising that studio is not really a recording studio at all. They are recording the drums in a room with windows and a giant fireplace. Talk about guerrilla recording. ***its called black dog recording studio now. The photos match up.
This must be one of the best interviews to a Metallica member that I've ever seen, what a GREAT material! Thank you!
Thank you for taking the time and commenting and expressing your interest. Is a long time Metallica fan this was a treat for me as well. All we ask is you share it with all your Metallica friends.www.metalmayhemroc.com
This is wild! So crazy to see these pics and hear these stories for the first time! Best Metallica content I’ve seen in MANY MANY years. Thank you!

Amazing! Thanks for the upload!
Dang this was soooo good. Thanks!
Awesome!!
I am from the ROC and all these places I remember even though I am much younger. But all classics! Watching Kirk get hit buy the memories after talking about it.
Thank you for listening... And from being from The "ROC"...
LET ME ASK YOU HOW DID YOU COME ACROSS OUR INTERVIEW?
Great interview guys!
Great interview! Thank you!!!!!
so cool seeing all these unseen pictures. great interview!
This is awesome !! Thanks a lot !
Those pictures in the beginning from recording the record are pretty incredible.
Very cool, thanks guys! 🤘
This was awesome.
Fantastic conversation guys.🤘
That was awesome. Kirk is obviously appreciative of his time in Rochester and recalls pretty much all of it. Nice works putting this interview together guys. Freakin' fantastic! If you want to carpool to Boston let me know. I can deal with being in the pit while you guys sip champagne backstage.
I'm just about to watch it, thank you guys. This is going to be a blast.
AWESOME interview! This is priceless. Man, I missed them by a few months! I left town just before then. I worked at Art Stocks Playpen for a long time and used to go to House of Guitars all the time just to hang out. I know WGMC is a jazz station now, but I honestly have never heard of it. Lived here all my life (mostly). Maybe because I never rolled the dial lower than 90.5. or when WRUR was a thing.
I truly felt like I was at a bbq seeing old buddies catch up since grown up life has taken over. Insanely cool and all best reasons why I love Kirk. Not only because he looks and reminds me of my dad, but his personality is truly just you and I, humbled.
Thank you for taken the time to watch and comment. YES!!!! Kirk is one cool as hell guy.
Amazing interview guys! Very interesting to be able to hear this stories and to see old photos.
These seem like very good times! 🤘🏻
Great interview
Greetings from Paris
Every time I watch one of these anniversary videos, it always reminds me how gifted I was to be an adult when these albums first came out and so therefore I could off really appreciate the musicianship.
This is incredible! Wow! Legendary album and listen to it all the time. So great to hear these stories and see pics from recording it.
Amazing interview into the enviornment of the album making and that period of the band
Insane content. Very rare photos!! The life and times of the first album inside out 🤘🔥
Great video. I really hope the other two will do the same, the stories are so funny to hear.
Absolute gem!
This video randomly popped up in my feed and it’s so great! I grew up in Canandaigua but had family in Monroe County so I always considered myself a Rochester native. I got into Metallica in the early 90’s when I was about 11 years old. It wasn’t until a few years later I found out that they recorded Kill ‘Em All in Rochester and I was shocked! For my generation that’s like finding out Led Zeppelin or The Rolling Stones recorded their first album in your hometown. I’ve always wanted to hear the band talk about their experiences in Rochester so I just wanted to say thank you for this!
Thank you so much for this interview. Kirk has always been an intriguing gem. ❤
just reached the end, it’s awesome seeing exclusive photos that haven’t been in previous documentaries. plus, the storytelling just paints a clearer picture.
thanks guys !
Thank you for taking the time to comment. We appreciate that and I hope you enjoy the end product

Kirk is an absolute treasure. I was afraid that he lost his ability, but I went to Texas in August to see them and they're as good as they've ever been.
He's such a nice person!
This is cool Bro!

Great interview, thanks! One of the best among the Snakepit Heavy Metal Magazine (the most informative Metal mag in world) with Ron McGovney. I guess there's more but these I know. Was the studio same where THE RODS recorded their Let Them Eat Metal album? A cold place in winter?

OMG I remember the King Biscuit Flour Hour !!! I also remember Fade To Black was the very last song KNAC ever played !!! KNAC if people aren't knowing cause they aren't old like me , KNAC was our metal station out of Long Beach Calif. and Metallica was huge on that station in the 80's , I have been rocking with the fellas since 1986 !!!!! Love you guys !!!!!
KNAC was such a huge station for Rock. Sad it had to go and Fade to Black was a fit ending😢
I have a whole new respect for kirk
Awesome video!!!

@@metalmayhemroc1851 I will definitely check it out!!
This is amazing! I love Kirks interviews and his down to earthness and his memory is incredible. Dont forget he`s never seen these pictures and he`s just straight in the moment, taking us back there with him. Despite the hugeness of Metallica they`re still so accessible, theres still that connection with the fans and after 35 years (for me) I still feel part of it. For the record I got one of Kirks picks at the second Manchester show in 2019 and was feet away from him when he (as always) was thanking the fans at the end. A true gentleman.
Thank you for taking the time to comment after watching this show. I must ask how did you come across our channel and this episode?
Kirk Hamster!
Killer interview!

Amazing interview. I actually learned something new which is unusual for me these days with Metallica. It's great Kirk was all concerned with making it up when they didn't get on the guest list. Those guys never forget where they came from.
What a great fukin vid!!I could listen to this kind of stuff for dayz!! Thank You!!🤘🤘🤘

Kirt, you guys were a great inspiration for many of us as well. Kill em All did a lot for me changed my whole perspective, you guys were innovators. That album is among my favorite all time.
Who’s kirt?
Awesome interview Rochester is a part of Rock N Roll ...........house of Guitars and etc,etc.................vibes too. Kirk coolness shines.

Winniebago. WOW. Thank you Kirk
kirk is a blast 😂😂 too much!
King Bisquit Flower hour with Preist ...... I hit record on my 8 track tape player, luckily I had 1 blank tape. I remember thinking just how lucky & happy I was listening to it.
I met one of the Old Bridge militia guys a couple of years while I was waiting in a bank, He was easy to spot because his jacket had Old Bridge Militia in the Metallica logo. He told me a lot of stories of partying and rocking out with all the Metallica boys in the 83.
Yeah we met a lot of them this summer over the weekend up at the Jersey MetLife show. Great guys and girls.
Love this video. My wife is from Buffalo and to hear of sheet pizzas and wings takes me to Western New York. I had no Idea they did Kill Them All in Rochester. too cool man.
It was the PIZZA PERDELER
I really enjoyed this show. I stumbled across this channel because I was in my recommendations. I was psyched to see At the show is based right here in Rochester. I have family members who are friends with the host; Small world.
Well I'm the host of Metal Mayhem Roc. I'm wondering who your family members are that know me
@@metalmayhemroc1851 Hi John, I'm Joe Lori's brother. I think you guys were neighbors at one time and she worked on your food truck for a while.

@@metalmayhemroc1851 random feed. I was looking for Metallica reactions.
This was a good watch. The old stories are awesome. I'm 39. So when Black Album came out, I vaguely remember my parents listening to it. Certainly enter sandman. But at 13 or so, kill em all was my Metallica album. So 1997. Load was out, but wasn't my speed at the time, however, Load and reload Now are my favorite periods along with Garage inc.
I'm 41 and I became a Metallica fan between the release of Load and ReLoad, so those albums are very nostalgic to me, but my first Metallica album purchase was the black album and I have Weird Al to thank for that because he put Enter Sandman in one of his polka compilations. I thought that melody was so cool that I had to buy the album.
I live down here in Rochester, I work at the house of guitars, I’m 19 and honestly I love this
I heard Rob Barrett of CANNIBAL CORPSE and SOLSTICE talking on one of the out takes of the Centuries of Torment DVD on youtube about buying a very important guitar to him from HOUSE OF GUITARS in Rochester.
He said it was a Les Paul sitting in the window when he was an "unsigned" young metalhead.
7 years later he went back after getting into CORPSE and having two nickels to rub together, and the same guitar was still there and he was able to buy it.
I loved that story.
You guys at that store have heavy metal cred and a hand in the history. A legacy to be proud of..
I'm in need of a high gain combo amp.
Maybe I'll check out the online site ( if you have one) when I'm done cruising youtube.
Love this! Get that dude some backstage passes.
Spectacular !!!!
Thank you... If I can ask - How did you find us and the video?
Of course! I pretty much Googled Kirk old pictures and it came up! Thank you so much for showing it! History on the making!!!

I dig how Kirk still has that kid like vibe!
Totally. thank you for commenting.
I love listening to Kirk's interviews he's so incredibly incredible ❤ and Hot and gorgeous I just love ❤️ him
Kirk is one of my childhood heros and so humble. He is the shit
Kill em all is to this day one of my favorite albums. The energy on that album is unmatched and to this day ive yet to hear anyone recreate that guitar tone properly
It was my first exposure , obviously. It's on its own shelf
Seek & destroy was my 1st ever real metal song that hooked me into that genre of music ,
Must admit, the just seen photos kinda mess with the mental perception we all built in our heads over the years. Of the times and actual places, where it all went down!
Music and imagery are both important in the creation of a mythology. Metallica has a very rich backdrop to the sounds they created
Yeah that's the uniqueness of this interview we put together. It's awesome that this stuff exists and it comes out 40 years later.
Great work guys! Seriously enticing content. Cliff 'em coming 🤘

Kirt, I saw Deep Purple on their long farewell tour a couple years ago at Bethel Woods (original Woodstock site) and thought the same thing, it would be a great surprise if Ritchie came out there since he lives about an hour away. But he didn’t of course.
