This interview can be resumed with one word : Loyalty. It's explicit that the 3 members are upset about not making an album and now even making one show per year. John said it all, it's all about loyalty with Serj situation. System of a Down would be unrecognizable today without Serj tho, they should've handle this situation in the past.
Also IMHO Shavo and John should've make his way to Scars on Broadway, it wouldn't change a thing in SOAD perfect discography and would upgrade SOB lineup. Just remembering that John was part of the band and basically if Shavo joined up at the time we would have a pretty solid band with Daron
@@victorbulbarelli9829 This is so true... John has helped to find the drums before if I remember correctly, and it has been perfect! It would not be surprising if their songs are amazing with them included.

They really were a perfect storm, creativity. energy, power, substance, great songs, awesome vocal lines and smart lyrics...John's drums were also outstanding and he just locked in that groove with Shavo. great band and so influential!
See this is why it makes me pissed when I see people complaining that Daron singing more was the reason SOAD broke up. The situation is soo much more complex than that.
@@JPX64Channel finally someone who understands what actually happened. I hate that Serj gets all the blame when it is so clearly Daron's fault for making the band about himself.
Even if we haven't had an album every couple of years to help grow with, all us true fans still listen to the old albums, that's all we have, so it wouldn't be much of a shock to us. We can go from listening to hypnotize today and then hear what new stuff you have tomorrow. Only those that haven't listened to you guys in over 15 years would probably get that shock though as John said.
@@oui2611 its lyrics is actually "...for a land, for a land" not band This dude commented it this way for making it meaningful to the situation (and making it a joke)
There's something I don't understand. It's always been said that Serj wasn't a metal guy, that he didn't grow up listening to heavy music, but it was precisely when Daron took more creative control that the band stopped being so heavy and started to be more experimental, on Mesmerize/Hypnotize . Wouldn't such a change be something Serj would like?
Nope it was too pop rock for serj. Hes not a metal guy neither a rock guy. Hes an opera guy. After toxicity and steal serj already wanted to stop. The rest of the band had to beg him to make mesmerize hypnotize
@@julienouellette1920 i know serj isn’t a metalhead so to speak but that doesn’t mean he’s not into it i’m kinda the same way. he was obv into it enough to be the vocalist for this band and even in their demos and shit he was doing death metal-ish type shit sometimes, i’m sure part of the reason he was hesitant towards mez/hyp was daron talking more of the creative control basically becoming the second lead vocalist
This has always confused me. Serj on the first album was pretty damn metal. Why did he ever join a band that was at that level of intensity if he wasn't into metal?
I have been in Camp Serj since the beginning. However, over a decade and a half later, as much as it pains me to say it, it seems the best thing would indeed be for the band to move on with a new singer, at least for the time being. I still agree with all the points of Serj's statement (have John, Daron or Shavo ever publicly responded to it?), but if Serj is so in favour of egalitarianism, he'll allow the guys to move on with good grace. However, as John says, they're still loyal to him, and the magic that happens when all four of them come together.
Yes they can get a new singer if it was 2006 not after they waited 17 years lmao. Maybe back then people would accept an album without Serj but after waiting this long, I know for a fact that a majority of the fan base would reject it and it would just ruin their discography
BLINK 182 DID IT I like the first album they did with Matt skiba. Soad can do it, too. At least one album and release some or the old demos or live version with it.
Everyone's got their take and it's valid. As a truly hardcore SOAD fan, I say let them take a shot with another singer. They will find one with superb vocal qualities and maybe even some creative juice. Guys, please, listen to SOB and Serj's solo stuff and tell me, what reminds you more of System? With Daron, John and Shavo, you've got three passionate guys making music. Don't bother Serj with this, his heart is somewhere else, and it's alright.
Honestly, as long as Serj indicated he was at least "mostly ok" with this, I would be ok with it too. But, since SOAD belongs to all 4 of them, if Serj was really against it, that would be his right. (I don't think he would be against it though.. Serj is a pretty cool and open minded guy)
@@mdtaylor2274 That is, if you want to replicate his voice. Me, personally? I don't. I preffer the other three guys and some other dude that they can get along with
I love all 4 of you. Its sad that theres this issue. I hope you figure it out. The type of drums the type of voices strings and base. Its not soad without all 4 of you. We need all 4 of you! You gave us life, hope, fun, entertainment. SOAD 4 LIFE
They would definitely have to change the name of the band if they replaced Serj. It wouldn't be system without him. Same if they replaced John, Daron or Shavo. System is those 4 members, the end! But I would like to hear those songs. Too bad they can't just record them and thats it, if serj doesn't want to tour...at least we would hear those songs. An ep would be awesome!
There is no System Without Serj, they couldn't possibly continue without him. And if Serj doesn't wanna be in a band then why have they continued to perform live for 12 years
I encourage folks to seek out Serj’s comments on this from a few years back. I think it helps provide context and it’s not as simple as “serj doesn’t want to do it.” Many of the points he raises are extremely valid. I hope they can find a middle ground and make more art. I miss it.
I don't think SOAD would be the same if you changed any member of the band! The band is a collective, each member brings their own energy and I don't think it would work if anything or anyone was replaced!!
It was very admirable of John saying this. They probably should have parted ways. From John's point of view your an artist the whole point is to create and try new sounds and styles of playing. Yes it's true that having a new singer wouldn't be the same but I can deal with Rage Against The Machine playing with Chris Cornell and modifying and adjusting their playing to melodies and chord progression. Yes there are few bands where it does work like AC DC or Alice In Chains. Love Serj would love to see him stay with the band but if they decide to go in a different direction with a new singer I welcome it. Change is a good thing sometimes.
Serj only released like three proper albums, the last one being 11 years ago, and 80% of the stuff he put out since then is total soundtrack crap or "painting accompanying sonatas" that God knows what the hell even are. Daron releases an album once every ten years. So no hole is filled, maybe a butthole.
May it would be possible to bring a new lead singer into the band, back in the days But, ya know, let's be honest, SOAD wouldn't be SOAD without Serj's amazing middle eastern voice and meaningful lyrics, with his work on songwriting along with the greatest songwriting process by Daron
@@enterpassword3313yeah me too, it certainly wouldn't be the same, but it doesn't have to be, I'm 100% convinced that they would produce brilliant music even without Serj, because the band is not only about the vocalist, but about spirit and creativity, and all 3 already have that, besides the already existing fans would also gain others, probably who would have fallen in love with the voice of the new lead singer, because I am convinced that they would choose someone who matches the spirit of the band
Comment #2: For you so-so fans and ride-or-die SOADers, don’t forget, Serj didn’t want to record Mesmerize or Hypnotize. The band had to literally beg him to record those final two albums. His head was no longer there, even in 2004/2005. I know because I was there. Serj demanded that a new tree be planted for every lyric he was recorded singing on those last two albums. He had the rest of the band out there, day and night, planting trees. Risking there musical lives to save the environment. If you look closely at their interviews from that stretch of time, you’ll notice how dirty their hands and shoes were. Serj had and has his priorities all backwards.
I think Daron said it best in that podcast a few years back. That one with the wrestler that made Serj acknowledge why they went on 'hiatus', finally. Most bands have a natural shelf-life to them. 5 really good albums might just be it. Plenty for fans to be grateful for. Being 14 when they went on hiatus and now being 31, I gotta say it's not that great to string along a fanbase like that. If you're still a band, great! Make music. If not, cool! Call it.
They could always have a whole different band with a new singer. Kind like the guys from Rage Against the Machine did with Chris Cornell and went on to form Audioslave. I think they could do that and just put System to the side incase Serj ever wants to do stuff with them again.
Yep if they want to make music they could have done it without Serj, its kinda annoying to put it on Serj instead of just moving on and making a new band
The truth remains to choose between Serj's voice or that the band no longer makes music once again. John, Shavo and Daron have potential, it would be a shame. It is somewhat difficult to explain the feelings
At the end of the day it’s 4 unique talented artists with their own ambitions and desires, and they grew apart creatively. Super understandable, sad, but ultimately we got some of the best goddamn metal on the planet from them, and if they’re done they’re done.
I don't know what to say, as a fan this makes me very sad. But if I think about it, they want to do something new, they have the motivation that Serj doesn't have for the band and... in part it is good to know that they want a new album for us, to imagine Serj outside of this is strange even so it is still incredible because they have potential, although it is SOAD and I could not get to see it as before... I don't know how to explain myself, it's a mixture of emotions Ahaha
Serj doesnt realise all the shit he is doing now wouldnt be possible without System. He needs to pull his head in and make another album with the band that gave him everything.
They do this like once every couple years or so. One or a few of them will do an interview or a social media post about why they can't buckle down and record something. And the answer has been well known for a while now. John wants to be optimistic about the future of the band and the songs they have but at the same time, another member will come in and say, sorry guys dont get your hopes up. Its disheartening to say the least and I truly see both sides of the coin here. There needs to be more compromise.
the problem here is that these 4 are SOAD, even if you replaced serj in 2006, although it'd be more acceptable than today, it still would change the sound of the band, like RATM and Audioslave, two bands with a similar sound, but different approach because of the uniqueness of each singer. And we gotta look into it in a more personal way, these guys are older, they're wiser, and less adrenaline based, their friendship has lasted decades, you just don't throw aside a friend because of a band, like serj said in a certain interview, they value their relationship as brothers more than their relationship as bandmates. Imo if SOAD comes back, it'll be great, just to know they can make music together, if they keep doing these shows once in a while and stick together, i don't mind it, but if they kick serj now, it'll just be sad tbh, they're almost 60 now, they're not 20 and naive...
So many fans feel the same way as John. SOAD is an amazing band, and the fans are waiting and hoping, but that's what sucks!!! Without John, Daron, Shavo and Serj it's not SOAD. If it's not those four, then it shouldn't be done.
john is too damn reasonable a person man. i swear. id go to him for an answer before i would most anyone else on this planet cuz i know hes that reasonable and honest a person.
I think the thing that sucks is that the others want to make new music, but the vocalist isn’t in it, and in this day in age without Serg it wouldn’t be the same today. Now what we could do is like a Soundgarden/Audioslave thing or Foo Fighters/Nirvana thing and just move onto a new project all together.
@@Fabulous_Killjoy0 yeah but serj's input was also as important, he also brought lyrics and music, they both are important but daron wants to manage it like if it was megadeth or something, or like john said, guns n roses like axl rose plus hired musicians.
definitely one of the most frustrating things of all time. Its so sad that here we are 2022 and we still have no new system of a down. The fans loose he nailed it right on the head the side projects are horrible. Together they are amazing apart they are just not there. Breaks my freakin heart
creative formats are antithetical to potential. The dilemma of "do we push through or do we find another singer for an album or 2" doesnt exist... make System of B Down, where the instrumentals are made public domain, and singers can interpret, record, and submit a version. now 10 songs become 1000. Fans can be close-minded to change, but if is the alternative is nothing at all, they will come around shiet, if they did a project where Daron and Serj each recruit a rapper, give them context about SOADS differences, and send them to rap battle eachother... its just off the top of my head, but what do yall think?
Serj is approaching his 60’s! Which is hard for me to even fathom. A new album, I would hope, would reflect their maturations as artists. And I think fans would appreciate that growth in sound. I would also insist on Rick Rubin as producer. There’s a lot of moving parts. And as such, the more time that goes by, the less likely a new album becomes. How glorious it would be to hear a new album is in the works; would get so many people excited.
Frankly, I am surprised that some of the members of system don't get together to form a "new band," aka replace Serj, but also change the name since with out his vocals, you can't really call it System. Each member literally has their part to play. I am just grateful that we got 5 albums of music.
I would have total respect for you guys if you moved on without Serj. Obviously his vocals are extremely unique and cant be duplicated, but is that really such a bad thing? Sure some fans will throw a fit, resistance to change is quite common, as is clinging to the past. But a band is a living organism and it requires members to be unified in the direction you are headed, otherwise as John said "It is unsustainable" like any unhealthy relationship. Maybe it would have been better to do that back in 2006, maybe not.... impossible to know now. A new member would have the potential to create a new dynamic that matches with the rest of the band today, and if that doesnt fit into the same mould as their self-titled album, Im okay with that. Clinging on to the way things "were" doesnt seem to be beneficial to any member. Ill love you guys no matter what either way and I will always be grateful for the music you wrote in the past. And I look forward to seeing what you do in the future, even if it involves a lineup change.
Simple. LET SERG HAVE TOTAL CONTROL OVER VOCALS AND LYRICS. I really think Darren trys to control too many aspects. Let Serg know he has control of those things and he will come around. Listen to me and things will happen.
Their first three albums are among my all time favorites. Mezmerize and Hypnotize were great as well but they had much darker tones so the music was clearly pivoting in a different direction, largely because the lyrics were primarily written by Daron. As much as it sucks that we don't have more albums I think that had they continued to write more music the fall off would have been big. They had an amazing run and they stopped at a good point in my opinion. A great example is Eminem. Look at his music now versus his music back before the Recovery album. He's had to evolve and unfortunately most of us fans don't enjoy the new albums as much but he just keeps going
Damn, this is a very complicated situation and I would love to hear something new from them but nothing is black and white, everything is grey. On the one hand, we have members who really want to move forward doing newer and newer songs. And here, on the other hand, is their singer who is also one of the most unique and iconic of all time and his voice cannot be faked. For me, vocals and playing an instrument are different things. Because to some extent, I think that someone new can play like an ex-member. In the case of a voice........ you can't fake it, especially in the case of such a unique one. And I will say that I'm not a fan of changing singers, because when I was a kid, I focused on them the most and replaced such an iconic voice with another one that may be good, but it won't stand out, at least it won't suit me. For example, Three Days Grace since Adam Gontier left, it's not the Three Days Grace it used to be. Maybe Matt Walst is not bad, but he doesn't have anything special about him, at least in my opinion. And the worst thing about all this is that it is not known whether SOAD will have the green light to release new songs at all.
I understand that they don't all want the same thing, in my opinion if the other members stay together, they can do it no problem. They just should create another band, it would be strange that they keep the same name without one of the members.
A bad back will ruin your entire life, everyday you have to cope with the pain, Others can not see or feel your pain, and you look normal, but inside all you want to do ia lay down and not move everyday because if you move it is pain.
About them potentially continuing without Serj, I would love to hear Zack de la Rocha delivering verses like “all successful drug policies show that treatment should be increased” and so on
He's right the four of them are unique. I was lucky enough to see them in the early 2000's twice, once in London and once in Reading festival when Toxicity was released. Pains me to know they have some kick ass tunes still out there....... One life my dudes, the oportunity is too great with a fan base like their's.... None of you are dead yet so let's Gooooooo!
Here's what I think: If you guys do take this step into a new path yourself, get the band a new vocalist, give it a new name. (it will be a new band with a different sound, meaning, presentation.) Then I think each side will remain simply with dignity. And the fact that you were completely different guys - that was the whole point of the System, so it turned out unique, crazy riffs, lyrics Your manifestation on the stage of each was harmonious, because everything that you have done together as soad is the best of the best and forever. In any case, I wish you good luck, but I hope someday to return and already without mutual insults, having found undestending. Though that's just my opinion :)

@@vodokidd Dammit why would Daron want that? They already have a good thing going with him as the secondary singer
"All these new bands... Are going to understand What System is what System is" that got me 6 to midnight! I have my ticket to Sick New World, I saw them on their farewell tour, I could not miss this one especially with them headlining. I'll never forget what Daron said during the show either.. "WE WILL ALWAYS BE SYSTEM OF A DOWN" 🤘🏽
These guys fuckn killed it dude. Even being in their 40-50s back at riot fest years ago they blew everyone away and the rest of the artist with due respect out the water.
John is a great guy and this is tough to watch. I hope one day they can work things out. They really were a perfect storm, creativity. energy, power, substance, great songs, awesome vocal lines and smart lyrics...John's drums were also outstanding and he just locked in that groove with Shavo. great band and so influential!
lmfao
See this is why it makes me pissed when I see people complaining that Daron singing more was the reason SOAD broke up. The situation is soo much more complex than that.
well, serj was pissed due to daron just wanting to take over both creative process and vocals.

I think it's because Serj neither initiated or nor had a major hand in creating it.
@@SkyNetGeneral1 clearly a stupid reason you just gave 😂
@@ZombieRoca I'd like to see more discussion about them recording new material as a three piece and seeing what happens.

I like the first album they did with Matt skiba. Soad can do it, too. At least one album and release some or the old demos or live version with it.
If they replace Serj it simply won’t be seen or heard as a SOAD album because it wont be a SOAD album without Serj

I was 12 when i got into system, the hypnotize music video got me hooked and ive been anxiously waiting for a new album ever since
Bro I was 8 and had no idea that is likely. But at least I had that last hype train if so.
Yup
Honestly, as long as Serj indicated he was at least "mostly ok" with this, I would be ok with it too. But, since SOAD belongs to all 4 of them, if Serj was really against it, that would be his right. (I don't think he would be against it though.. Serj is a pretty cool and open minded guy)
Nobody else has the talent to replicate Serj’s voice. The band is dead without him and all four guys working together. Sad but true.

I don't think SOAD would be the same if you changed any member of the band! The band is a collective, each member brings their own energy and I don't think it would work if anything or anyone was replaced!!
Why are you ALL CRYING ? We don't care, even if it's not gonna be the same. Nothing can stay the same, grow up.
Why I love John always going to bat for the band
10:34 i feel that this era we have Serj and Darons solo work. That fills up that hole
Serj only released like three proper albums, the last one being 11 years ago, and 80% of the stuff he put out since then is total soundtrack crap or "painting accompanying sonatas" that God knows what the hell even are. Daron releases an album once every ten years. So no hole is filled, maybe a butthole.

Bro, I wouldn't mind if SOAD just did an instrumental ep of sick riffs and rhythms with occasional screaming from Daren and Shavo!
May it would be possible to bring a new lead singer into the band, back in the days
But, ya know, let's be honest, SOAD wouldn't be SOAD without Serj's amazing middle eastern voice and meaningful lyrics, with his work on songwriting along with the greatest songwriting process by Daron
Idk why they cant just start a new band with a new singer
@@enterpassword3313yeah me too, it certainly wouldn't be the same, but it doesn't have to be, I'm 100% convinced that they would produce brilliant music even without Serj, because the band is not only about the vocalist, but about spirit and creativity, and all 3 already have that, besides the already existing fans would also gain others, probably who would have fallen in love with the voice of the new lead singer, because I am convinced that they would choose someone who matches the spirit of the band
“We’re gonna remind them”… yes! 🙏
Comment #2:
For you so-so fans and ride-or-die SOADers, don’t forget, Serj didn’t want to record Mesmerize or Hypnotize.
Disagree there, buddy. Mesmerize and hypnotize our perfection.
Damn. It all makes sense now. No wonder they can't agree. Serj has been mentally hijacked by Hollywood.
He's making many points here. We want to see them back in France. I never got to see them, that's my dream.
Call it.
What’s the podcast or what’s the real reason they even went on hiatus. What’s Seth’s real reason to not want to make a new album?
The thought of there being 6 years of unreleased material actually kills me.
I think the government has become extremely more corrupt without bands calling out the system. Maybe that’s why rock music died… was a hit job lol
@@roadrash2005 I honestly think the same...
They could always have a whole different band with a new singer. Kind like the guys from Rage Against the Machine did with Chris Cornell and went on to form Audioslave. I think they could do that and just put System to the side incase Serj ever wants to do stuff with them again.

There will never be another system of a down. Never.
We need a new band. Start a new project. They don't even have to get a new singer, they have enough vocal talent.
Serj doesnt realise all the shit he is doing now wouldnt be possible without System. He needs to pull his head in and make another album with the band that gave him everything.
I don't blame him for not wanting to be Daron Malakian's bitch.
Damn he's pretty honest in this, it is really sad how band relationships always diverge in some way.
12:30 chills !
the problem here is that these 4 are SOAD, even if you replaced serj in 2006, although it'd be more acceptable than today, it still would change the sound of the band, like RATM and Audioslave, two bands with a similar sound, but different approach because of the uniqueness of each singer.
John is the fucking man.
I love this man.
john is too damn reasonable a person man. i swear. id go to him for an answer before i would most anyone else on this planet cuz i know hes that reasonable and honest a person.
I think the thing that sucks is that the others want to make new music, but the vocalist isn’t in it, and in this day in age without Serg it wouldn’t be the same today. Now what we could do is like a Soundgarden/Audioslave thing or Foo Fighters/Nirvana thing and just move onto a new project all together.
nah, there's more to that, daron wanted to do it but only in his terms, even being paid more than serj himself , wtf?
@@JPX64Channelwell he does write a lot of the guitar riffs and stuff
@@Fabulous_Killjoy0 yeah but serj's input was also as important, he also brought lyrics and music, they both are important but daron wants to manage it like if it was megadeth or something, or like john said, guns n roses like axl rose plus hired musicians.

definitely one of the most frustrating things of all time. Its so sad that here we are 2022 and we still have no new system of a down. The fans loose he nailed it right on the head the side projects are horrible. Together they are amazing apart they are just not there. Breaks my freakin heart
They did release 2 new singles at least for and donating funds to charity
creative formats are antithetical to potential. The dilemma of "do we push through or do we find another singer for an album or 2" doesnt exist... make System of B Down, where the instrumentals are made public domain, and singers can interpret, record, and submit a version.
now 10 songs become 1000. Fans can be close-minded to change, but if is the alternative is nothing at all, they will come around
shiet, if they did a project where Daron and Serj each recruit a rapper, give them context about SOADS differences, and send them to rap battle eachother... its just off the top of my head, but what do yall think?
Serj is approaching his 60’s! Which is hard for me to even fathom. A new album, I would hope, would reflect their maturations as artists. And I think fans would appreciate that growth in sound. I would also insist on Rick Rubin as producer. There’s a lot of moving parts. And as such, the more time that goes by, the less likely a new album becomes. How glorious it would be to hear a new album is in the works; would get so many people excited.
I wish Daron would do more with Scars on Broadway. That first album is fire.
Well there is a second album
Frankly, I am surprised that some of the members of system don't get together to form a "new band," aka replace Serj, but also change the name since with out his vocals, you can't really call it System. Each member literally has their part to play. I am just grateful that we got 5 albums of music.
They should be making System of a Down feat. *whoever is the vocalist for a track or album*
In the meantime
I’m sure dudes would understand
I can't picture anyone replacing Serj in that band. His vocals made that band and I highly doubt anyone could fill his shoes.
Simple. LET SERG HAVE TOTAL CONTROL OVER VOCALS AND LYRICS. I really think Darren trys to control too many aspects. Let Serg know he has control of those things and he will come around. Listen to me and things will happen.
Yeah, I took Serj's side a while ago. He's 100% justified in his terms (which aren't even that crazy, btw).
Kudos to him
I understand that they don't all want the same thing, in my opinion if the other members stay together, they can do it no problem. They just should create another band, it would be strange that they keep the same name without one of the members.
cant fkn wait for Sick New World gonna be crazyy 🔥🔥🔥
