What are the different features of the FX and FJ Dash? Gary Crowley explains and there's a few other tips along the way.
What is a tappet adjuster for a Holden Grey Motor? Its explained.
There will be another video featuring Barry and his love of Holdens in the near future in more detail.

The FJ is a monocoque construction, it broadly followed the silhouette of its predecessor the FX, but featured a bolder horizontal styled front grille, along with comfort and decoration upgrades in a new sedan model named the 'Holden Special'. Originally specified as 60 bhp (45 kW) achieved at 3,800 rpm, the claimed maximum power output from the six-cylinder engine was increased to 65 bhp (48 kW) achieved at 4,000 rpm.
The sedan, in Standard, Business and Special trim levels, and a coupe utility were announced in October 1953 and were followed by a panel van derivative in December of that year.

    FX? A misnomer.
My father was a production mgr at the Fishermans Bend and DISCO plants for many years. My brothers (and my first job) were also there and of course we had many Holdens over the years. I mentioned the FX one day, he said something like "No such thing, it's a 48-215, people are lazy".

@dazaspc. FJ is code for 53. The FB is code for 59. If I got it right the fx should be GC.
The term fx was introduced by morons who did not understand the code.
48-215 was the production number of number 1 Holden, and became the model number within the Holden company.
After many years of reading it seems that prior to the commencement of production the car was known within GM as the Holden car.

They were based in Mordialloc Victoria, Australia.

So I was born in 1980 in nsw and my grandfather had a vintage car wrecking in Bentley nsw I remember bill byrnes my grandfather telling me if you go for a walk down in lines of Holdens you’ll find the first holden made was the 48-215 then the FX then the FJ then you’ll see the FE and FC and so on he put all the holdens down in the lower part of acreage and put all the fords like his 36 -37 - 21 stud 24 -stud v8s coupes and utilities vans up in the dry part of the property like all the xb xcs and xrs xt xw xy falcons it was definitely a experience growing up in the wrecking yard of bill byrnes

Difference between FX & FJ on the dash, speaker grill and ash tray. FX had a fine square mesh compared to FJ black/silver stripes.

I always remember the funny speedos on the early holdens. The 10 was always done as 01.I didn't realize the 90 and 100 was backwards as well, and also highly improbable of ever reaching,.

There was a big difference between the first holden made in my knowledge in sedans as the 48-215 had the rear door locks push knobs right back in the quarter window bits of the rear doors and the latter FX FJ had them at the front of the rear doors and the 48-215 had narrow rear leaf springs and the weird right angle shocks was different to FX and FJ as they were wider correct me if I’m wrong 😑

Minor things like speedo colour, knob colour, and even major things are no reliable guide to when a GM-H car was produced or what model it is supposed to be.
Sometimes they had an excess of parts when the next model started in production. So GM-H would install the previous model parts in any cars earmarked for government fleet contracts.
I once owned an ex Post Office EK. Not only did it have that revolting red colour, it had vacuum wipers. I soon changed both. Dealer-sold EK's had a slightly larger motor. Mine had the smaller motor from the previous model - and, no, the serial numbers proved nobody had swapped it. Government departments sometimes would actually request a smaller motor - something buyers of old Fords should look out for - Ford was more flexible and more keen to get government business.

So what's the point every other car company want's to make cars as cheaply as possible.
Holdens were the best made Australian cars.
Fords all squeek because they don't put as many welds to save money.
Valiants had wishy washy steering boxes and poor build quality.
Mitsubishi are a bits of s#$%y.
Nissan and Toyota were the best Australian assembled cars.
      Vw's ok
      But
Mowog were the worst no reliability

If you compare the metallurgical mix of GM and other American cars, metal parts to Toyota, you’ll discover that Toyota has a much more durable composite. Same with Toyota plastics. Toyota wiring looms are also better quality as is their waterproofing around components. Toyota also have more in-house accessory build whereas the Americans and most of the Europeans outsource their accessories and a percentage of standard items.
The big difference came with electronics. The Japanese, and in particular Toyota, evolved to get it right. GM and Co. are still grappling with build quality in their electronics systems.
A simple recommendation comes from middle eastern warlords and terror groups operating in desert conditions. On the tailgates of their vehicles you’ll pretty much see one word…Toyota.
