How a starter motor works

The early GM, Ford and Chrysler motors were pretty simple beasts. As long as they weren’t locked up really bad with a bit of tinkering you can usually get them up and running. The starter motor tutorial was excellent.
You’ve got a working motor and somewhere there is a bloke in a shed with an empty engine bay. Be a shame for her to not see the open road again. Your call. 👍
Cheers mate thanks for the positive comments.
Be definitely good to see it back on the road someday 👌🏽
Hey Brent, Repco has a special on cans of brake cleaner. 2 for $12 if you’re a member. Considering you run the FC on brake cleaner might save you a buck.😂
Pickle my Grandmother, great job mate, Nevil & I are impressed.
Are you the real Ted bullpit lol ????
@@unclebrentsshed4253 I'll have to ask that grubby little purple valiant driver that leaves all his greasy wog oil all over my driveway. lol
@@unclebrentsshed4253 LOL mate, You'll have to ask that grubby little purple valiant driver that leaves his greasy w o g oil all over my drive way.........not to mention he doesn't pay for his beer. lol
Good to see it running I watched the episode when you picked up the old FC and I had a bet with my son that you will get it running now I'm $50 richer 😁. I picked up a fc last year that sat in a open tin shack of about 20 year's I hot wire it sprayed degreaser and it started straight away then I clean the carby put 45s Toyota hydraulic clutch master clean the slave , I was driving it around the block 2 days later with no break's ,
My favourite engine...tough as due to sloppy tolerances. I boiled mine after l hit a crow, it got that hot l could hear fluids boiling on shut down. Let it cool off overnight, topped it up n ran fine, that body got nailed, put it in another body for 3 years before selling it
That’s a cool story man , thanks for following along 👌🏽👌🏽
Nice to see you get it going so easily. Hope you can salvage the motor and a few bits. Looks like it is beyond restoration😂. Loved your explanation of the starter motor. The FC was a nice Holden. Dad had a few. Wish we still dad them.
Cheers , she has a few salvageable pieces 👌🏽
Awesome video. The starter education part was spot on mate. I'm impressed the old Grey ghost lives again. Tbh I'm not surprised it fired up because they are tuff old engines. Holden made good cars. I kind of feel sad the old girls body is dead . Anyway I enjoy the vids.
Cheers brother , thank you 👌🏽👌🏽
@@unclebrentsshed4253 very welcome 👍
Did the same thing with a VF ute I parted. Worth more running than dead. Used same idea for fuel tank except i was lucky fuel pump worked. Oh regarding the commutator, in a very past life as an armature winder, we would grind an arrow head into a broken hacksaw blade and use this to put a chamfer on the segments as you dragged it down the slot. On the other end of the blade we would grind a hook to clear the slots of overhanging copper.
Awesome , cheers for that useful information.
Thank you 👌🏽👌🏽
Great explanation of how the motor works!
Cheers , I try lol
Want a kit through that Stromberg.
Very, very hard to kill the greys. I'm going to hazard a guess and say the body's slightly roo-ted.😁😁
Probably needs a drink too, cool off a bit. That front chrome work looks good, didn't see too many dings in it.
The chrome is mostly pitted
In my youth ' l owned many Holdens... FC FB FJ and EH.. So easy to work on.. l use to do most the mechanical myself. Those were the days..
I bet you wish you still had all of those old cars in the shed 👌🏽
@@unclebrentsshed4253 l sure do... l thought the same when l wrote that... 😊
Excellent, it’s alive.
And it sounds healthy
@@unclebrentsshed4253 doesn’t it, amazing really.
That old sludgy still sounds sweet. Doesn’t seam smokey from the exhaust or breather ether. You’re the same as me, I’m sometimes a bit of a bush Machanic, (there are times when you have to be) I have “basically” and at times very basically repaired starters, alternators and a host of other things just to keep the wheels rolling. That part you filed using the drill on the armature I think is the slip ring? All though,I’m not an electrician either.Lol😂. I enjoyed watching your video..
Thanks for turning in mate , she was definitely a bush mechanic episode lol
Am glad you enjoyed 👌🏽
The name of the stuff getting in between the segments of the starter, after filing is "shit" you don't want any "shit" bridging the segments
Haha so true 👌🏽
Nice work Bloke. The old battle axe lives again !!
Haha she’s minty 👌🏽
@@unclebrentsshed4253 Would love to see it driving around mate. That would be hilarious 😂
I love how much input other GM divisions had on Holden , the 130 ci and 138 ci Grey Motors share much with the Chev Blue Flame Six , even later 130 ci , 138ci ( before anyone pipes up and says " there was no 130 or 138 red motor , they were LC Torana options , the 130 red only sold in LC s in Malaysia), 149 ci , 161ci , 173ci, 179ci , 186ci and 202 ci Red Holden Sixes share so much with the Chev Red 199ci, 250 ci and 292ci Six motors of the same period if they are not side by side good luck telling them apart , even though the Chev Sixs had Chev V8 Bellhousing pattern , just think of a LC or LJ GTR XU1 with a Chev Red 292ci or 4.9 litre Six , triple side draught webbers and a Saginaw 4speed manual, bolts rite in the same location, same mounts , gearbox length as aussie 4speed ( as this is were the aussie 4speed came from the Saginaw 4 speed) same output splines , linkage . That would be a cool different XU1 that with 4.9 litres would go hard , just put 186 stickers on the tappet cover , you would be hard pressed to find an Aussie mechanic who noticed the difference ! As for our early 253ci and 308ci Red V8s, well they are almost a copy of an Oldsmobile 307 ci to 403ci Small Block , these are the only 2 GM V8s to share intake port location and exhaust port location , same alloy rocker bridges , same 8 deg valve angles, same 153 tooth ring gear, same right hand side starter location , same intake design, the only difference is chev bore spacing .
Wow that’s a wealth of information and knowledge right there , I can confirm the 138 red in a Torana as I have seen one in person .
Also the input spline on the GM goes right back into the late 20s I believe .
Cheers man , thanks for your input 👌🏽👌🏽
Nice👍👍
Cheers mate 👌🏽
Absolute banger.
Haha cheers
Well done it runs so good. Aussie Grey motor. Yeah next episode: will it drive, Hell Yeah let go.
Oooo that sounds like 1 person wanting me to drive it lol
Well done uncle. I was pretty sure you’d get it running👌
Cheers man , thanks for the support 👌🏽👌🏽
@@unclebrentsshed4253 no worries at all mate. I enjoy the vids you make. Even better that your only around the corner from me. I’m on the Yorke Peninsula and travel past yours often on my way to Lincoln. So it would be rude if I didn’t support a local bloke like yourself.
Keep it going 👍
Would be cool to see it drive - even just for a few feet!
Yes I agree
Like a new one🤣❤️🦘🦘🦘🇦🇺
Cheers mates
Great parts car for a restoration
That’s exactly right 👌🏽
Nice result😁. Uncle Brent’s pickapart? Should be fun whatever you do. Cheers from NZ🇳🇿.
Haha cheers mate 👌🏽
Good job telling the inexperienced people NOT to hit the solenoid casing. I knew that it was the brushes that caused the ‘click of death’. Any time I take a hammer to a starter motor, I avoid the solenoid and give the motor casing a decent tap.
Cheers mate, one thing I forgot to mention was when the brushes are worn and the solenoid doesn’t click in , that’s a built in safety so you don’t send full power to the bushes and blow holes in your armature 👌🏽
@@unclebrentsshed4253 A bit like telling people that it isn’t ether which kills an engine, it is continued use of ether instead of fixing the engine that destroys it😁.
Top video, you've gotta love the old grey motors. She sounds good too
Thanks mate 👌🏽
Hope you see next video
Are you going to make over that Holden
Are you going to make over that Holden
No mate , it’s going to get parked up 👌🏽
Just fix the door gaps, a bit rubber and bit of cutting polish and it will ready for rego
That’s basically what I was thinking 😅👌🏽
Just liked an subscribe here in the UK mate
Cheers, thank you brother 👌🏽
nice work Brent, your dad would be proud of the work your doing here❤
you should go show Pattie thats the grey ghost is runnin again, n mayb get some start ya bastard for the next 1 😂
Cheers mate , I seen her today actually and told her it runs , she was quite surprised ☺️
Gotta drive it...
I know right
This clip will go to the Holden boys head you never hear 👂 the end of it 😂🤣.
Yes unfortunately 😅😂🤦🏻
My first car was a 59 FC from my Grandfather even though he was not a Holden man back in 73 in the Hunter Valley I drove it on my l s 😀my Dad and his dad drove Mopars and my uncle and old brother who brought a new 2 door Pacer in Dubbo in 1970 . So the FC had to go 🤔and on came my first Valiant a AP5 followed by my younger brothers also buying Valiants . Even so that old FC was in good nick still in 73 . A time when the auto industry was so much more simple . Bets any lap top 🚮 today . 👍🏻🇦🇺.
Definitely can’t beat the old days mate 👌🏽
Well done guys 👍
Cheers , thank you very much 👌🏽
Could drive it but the subframe walk away from the body pretty quick
Yeah she’s to far gone
Body isn't half bad at all!!
Half bad , half rust and half metal lol
File Is too aggressive, 4:39 better use sandpaper.
Yes but I really needed to get the section flat , as it was badly deformed
Just put some air in the tyres and she on the road lol
That’s what I’m thinking 😂😅👌🏽
🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺
COOL AS FUCK 😎
Cheers brother 👌🏽
Mr you restoration that fc holden
No sir , it’s to far gone
