Phil Irving designed a Highpower crossflow head for Repco it was cast iron. Phil wanted it to be cast aluminum but was out voted. RAECO a subsidiary of Repco sold them out of their premises at 10 Queensberry St North Melbourne.

GMH never made an FX. It was and always will be a 48-215!

I run a Holden Grey in a HA/GR nostalgia dragster. Wilkinson head, triple 1 3/4" S.U.s, manual 3 speed (HG all synchro) HR open centre diff. I would love to have access to blokes like these for information and machinery but most of the places that knew how to build good Grey motors are gone. Best I've done is 13.5 at WSID. I knew Warren Armour back in the 1964 he had a chopped top FJ Holden and did 15 seconds at the drags in west Sydney.

I always remember the funny speedos on the early holdens. The 10 was always done as 01.I didn't realize the 90 and 100 was backwards as well, and also highly improbable of ever reaching,.

FX? A misnomer. My father was a production mgr at the Fishermans Bend and DISCO plants for many years. My brothers (and my first job) were also there and of course we had many Holdens over the years. I mentioned the FX one day, he said something like "No such thing, it's a 48-215, people are lazy".

Tappet adjuster used them in my apprenticeship on grey motors.better than ring spanner and screw drivers.

So I was born in 1980 in nsw and my grandfather had a vintage car wrecking in Bentley nsw I remember bill byrnes my grandfather telling me if you go for a walk down in lines of Holdens you’ll find the first holden made was the 48-215 then the FX then the FJ then you’ll see the FE and FC and so on he put all the holdens down in the lower part of acreage and put all the fords like his 36 -37 - 21 stud 24 -stud v8s coupes and utilities vans up in the dry part of the property like all the xb xcs and xrs xt xw xy falcons it was definitely a experience growing up in the wrecking yard of bill byrnes

There was a big difference between the first holden made in my knowledge in sedans as the 48-215 had the rear door locks push knobs right back in the quarter window bits of the rear doors and the latter FX FJ had them at the front of the rear doors and the 48-215 had narrow rear leaf springs and the weird right angle shocks was different to FX and FJ as they were wider correct me if I’m wrong 😑

Difference between FX & FJ on the dash, speaker grill and ash tray. FX had a fine square mesh compared to FJ black/silver stripes.

My late father always talked about his fj ute long before I was born i still cherish the photo of my beloved parents standing beside the fj ute on their engagement day my grandad took picture Dad always said he had rope on door to stop it opening 🤣🤠✌️🦘🐨⭐

Minor things like speedo colour, knob colour, and even major things are no reliable guide to when a GM-H car was produced or what model it is supposed to be. Sometimes they had an excess of parts when the next model started in production. So GM-H would install the previous model parts in any cars earmarked for government fleet contracts. I once owned an ex Post Office EK. Not only did it have that revolting red colour, it had vacuum wipers. I soon changed both. Dealer-sold EK's had a slightly larger motor. Mine had the smaller motor from the previous model - and, no, the serial numbers proved nobody had swapped it. Government departments sometimes would actually request a smaller motor - something buyers of old Fords should look out for - Ford was more flexible and more keen to get government business.

Turning Left hand signal was the same as the Stop hand signal was my understanding.

What a great interview. My husband bought an Austin 1800. It was our first car together. White with red interior. John is certainly an interesting person. Good on him for writing a book. I think the first Title is the best as well. Then if I was him I would include it in the Forward : the poem stone walls a prison do not make. Because that was some of his inspiration. I feel he wants some recognition of those words, I think too long for the title, but excellent as part of the Forward. His wife was a sterling hostess. I couldn't believe how much coffee they got through though. Just as well he had the car club to give him a different perspective and relaxation from his day job.

Our 56 Desoto had a 4bbl.
