We have owned this house for just about one year and I'm here to share how we completely transformed our kitchen cabinets for right around $75. Our contractor advised ripping them all out and replacing with new (to the tune of around $10 G's) but we decided to try a little paint first and the results speak for themselves.
Rustoleum Chalked Paint (Linen White) x 2 = $40
Minwax Polycrylic (Clear Satin) = $18
Liquid Sander = $8
Foam Roller = $5
Paint Brush = $4
TOTAL= $75
YOU CAN FIND ALL OF THESE ITEMS IN MY AMAZON FAVORITES STORE: www.amazon.com/shop/oldworldhome
Our countertops were purchased through Lowes and they are the Baltic Butcher Block. We had a local carpenter cut, stain, and seal them for us. The color is Minwax Jacobean. Here is a link to the Lowe's website for the counters: low.es/2ntVUll
As I mentioned in the video, the island is part of a set of cabinets we purchased at a Habitat for Humanity Restore. The color is Sherwin Williams Ovation, Evergreen Boughs, however... I had a sample made when choosing a color and they accidentally gave me a mis-tint. Turned out I loved the mis-tint! So while the color is Evergreen Boughs, there are a couple different formulas that come up on the Lowes system. This is the exact formula for one quart: 101-1Y42.25, 111-31.75, 203-8.25.

Blows my mind that less then $100 could make such an huge difference. Looks lovely.
Happy 1-year! Paint can make such a big difference. We are on the fence about ours...still can't decided but I'm saving this video. No sanding for the win.
The cabinets really do look great!! It's nice to know that chalk paint can withstand the everyday use in a kitchen. I've been wanting to use the paint on other projects and now I feel more confident doing so. Thank you for sharing!
Your creativity and clever things of making and improving things around your house is truly remarkable and inspiring! Thank you for taking us in this journey of making your house your HOME! It is so lovely and inviting, the kitchen has truly transformed from whooaaa to wow 😮! Great job
That did it, I’m painting our kitchen cabinets! Your kitchen looks amazing, and I LOVE the hardware! Thanks for the helpful info and tips.
I Love how they turned out.
I am so inspired by all that you and Dan have done to your home. Thank you for sharing it with us. I am wanting to change the color of my cabinets and you have inspired me to do so. Thank you for telling me about the hinges. When I take down my cupboard doors I will label the hinges. I am in love with your channel. Your can do attitude has me thinking that I can do it also. You have given me the inspiration to do things in my home. Thank you for the inspiration. Sending hugs to you and the girls.
I have painted projects inside the house and outside the house for over 40 years and I have to say you have done an amazing job on your cabinets as well as the rest of your home. Looks great.
Oh wow! I have a fixer upper and I'm working on the kitchen now. Thank you so, so much for this video! Extremely helpful!
You have helped me and my husband a great deal with this excellent video! My kitchen is definitely horrible and we've been racking our brains with different things we could do and for not much money to improve the depressing kitchen. Thank you so much for your help and Congratulations on your Home's One Year Anniversary of Looking Awesome! 😀 💕
Thank you for sharing all this information. You have a beautiful kitchen and I’ve enjoyed so much watching as you transform your house to make it a home. ❤️
I am so excited to try this! I got my condo 1.5 yrs ago and couldn’t find a good way to update cabinets. Happy to have come across your idea. Thank you and have fun in your newer home too💙
I watched your progress and enjoyed seeing this comparison. One year! Time sure does fly!
You did a great job with the cabinets. I am in love with that hardware, I think it elevates the cabinet to a whole other level! Happy One Year Anniversary in the house!
Love it! We just bought a house and the first thing I want to do is paint the cabinets. Thanks for a great video!
Congratulations on one year in your new home!! When we updated our kitchen, we also decided to paint and it made all the difference in the world. Our house was built in the late '70's so avocado green and harvest gold were all the rage. Yikes! Now it's a nice neutral stone and beige color with new ceramic floors. My kitchen is my favorite room in the whole house. AND my husband did all the remodeling himself. He's a great guy!
Thanks for the tips!!! We're moving into our new apartment in a home that I think was built in the 1800s, and have already painted the living room. The kitchen cabinets and a faux backsplash are my next step. :)
I love this! So inspiring! Thank you for listing all of the products you used! 👍
Wow! One year!!! I just recently rewatched your fixer upper series for some inspiration. Crazy how much you all did in such a short amount of time. This kitchen is especially inspirational because besides the countertops and floors, you pretty much used what you had. That's always what I'm looking for in my limited budget. :):)
Happy one year anniversary! We ,over into our new house about two years ago November and love being here.Once we painted our whole house (yeah we had someone do it for us) it felt more like ours. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you so much for the tips and encouragement! Shared and saved for future reference.🙃👍🏻
Just absolutely LOVE your kitchen! Looks just beautiful!!!!! 💕
We also painted our cabinets almost a year ago. we also live in a old 100 year old farmhouse i did it the hard way with about 5 coats of cabinet paint and about $200. i spayed painted my hinges. you are right about the hinges i also learned the hard way. they do have a memory and are to match back up. love your kitchen. tfs
Yes it has held up beautifully and this was a great one year video!!!!! I absolutely love your kitchen......💞😊
our kitchens are twins!! I used the same exact paint and polycrylic on my kitchen cabinets and I love it! My cabinets are laminate and I had no problem with the paint not sticking to them, chalk paint is very forgiving. Love the way your kitchen looks!!
You all should be so proud of everything you've accomplished so far! It's so inspiring to watch! They turned out fabulous and you saved SO MUCH $$$! Kuddos
Yay! I've been waiting for this! I feel an early spring project coming!
I’m so glad you made this video Hilary! We are going to start looking at houses soon and I want white cabinets. It’s good to know I can do this myself for very little money if needed!
You did a great job redoing your kitchen. I love how your cabinets turned out!
I just love how they turned out. Thanks for sharing Hilary 💜
I am so glad to find your video on painting your kitchen cabinets using the Rustoleum Chalked paint in Linen White. I am going to purchase these same products in the morning that you have used in your kitchen. I am so happy to see the results. I will get back to you to show you my results. Thank you so much.
Happy One Year Anniversary to your house!!! The kitchen is stunning and you and Dan have done an amazing job!
Hi Hilary, Beautiful results! I'm in LOVE with your custom green for the Island:-) Great to see the lovely result you've achieved with the Rustoleum chalk paint. I'm definitely going to use that for ours. cheers
Wow that came out great, love the island.
You guys have done a wonderful job fixing up your home Beautiful job. Your home is just warm and lovely. You have a beautiful family. Look forward to your videos. They are very inspiring. Margaret.
Hinge memory--- yes, that is definitely a thing!!! Otherwise you sit there trying every possible combination! Polyacrylic is my absolute favorite sealer--- no yellowing! I use it on everything!
Your kitchen transformation is wonderful! I will soon be using chalk paint for the first time on my coffee and end tables - I'm pretty excited about it!
Very nice. Enjoyed watching this one for sure.
They look great, my friend! I’m inspired to paint ours now!
Your kitchen it's lovely! You and your husband did an amazing job
love this kitchen transformation. i am going to try this in my new home.
$75 IS AMAZING! AND BEAUTIFUL!!!
Cupboards look great 1 yr on...TFS what you used on them. 👍

Your kitchen turned out beautiful! I can't believe it has been a year! Thanks for sharing ❤
I laughed when you said hinge memory you are so right haha!
thank you for sharing this video you are awesome I like that you are so detailed & great at explaining everything especially the cost and the materials you used. Your kitchen is beyond beautiful I love your taste. Happy anniversary.
Amazing transformation.
Thanks for sharing, we are moving in two weeks and I was wondering how to handle the kitchen. Great for the idea and the reviews !
Thank goodness I came across this video! I’ll be doing mine in a few weeks and I was getting discouraged by all the sanding I would have to do but glad there’s other options! Yay! So excited to have my “new” kitchen :D
I’d love to see it when you’re done! 💛
Hi Hilary! How are you kitchen cabinets holding up? You've inspired me to use the Rustoleum chalk paint to do my kitchen cabinets. This just seems so much easier than any other video I've watched.
They’ve held up great! Very easy to clean, since they’re white you definitely see the dirt more but I don’t mind, that means I’m actually getting them clean 😄 A few areas around the lower sink cabinets have needed some touch up paint but other than that they look just the same as the day I painted them!
Two years ago, I painted my cabinets antique white using General Finishes Milk Paint, which isn't true milk paint but more of a chalk-type paint, and I haven't regretted it once. I'm wiping them down more often now because I notice the dirt more, but I prefer that over letting the grunge build up on stained cabinets. I love your hardware. That type of hardware is so hard to find. You were fortunate to get an entire set.
Thanks for the tips. Happy 1 year house anniversary!
Your kitchen is so pretty. You did a wonderful job.
Hinge memory...lol. Your kitchen is fabulous. Thanks for sharing your tips.
Beautiful ! I love the hardware and was going to ask where to find them, but alas I’ll have to do a vintage search. Great transformation ! 💕
you are so inspirational! Best of luck to you and your family making good memories in that kitchen :)
Such a great video! I’m going to send the link to my husband to talk him into doing this to our bathroom 😃
Excellent video. Very inspiring and informative. Thanks!!
TFS. Great info😘. I was really dreading. U helped a lot😉
So lovely, you have great taste!
Hi Hillary!! You are amazing!! Great video, so informative. Thanks for telling us the brand of things you used : ). Like I’ve said in the past...you guys did such an amazing job on your whole home. Continued blessings for you and your family. : )
I also chalk painted my cabinets. I took all the doors and hardware and hindges off (I agree 100% about labeling the hinges) I left the base cabinets in place. Had no problems. Looks amazing. I used an antique wax and a clear wax on top of the chalk paint. Been 3 years and I have no issues what so ever.. I absolutely love it.. If you are on the fence about using chalk paint. Don't.. It was super easy and looks amazing..
Amazing job!
They look great 👍
So helpful! Thank you!! First chalk paint video that discusses using a roller!
Great video and presentation
Looking forward to my project
I used TSP prior to painting my cabinets. Worked great!
Happy anniversary to you ans dan and family house looks great love new name getting used tom it now its flown by hasnt it xx
We too did not label...it was a nightmare!! Definitely recommend labeling!! 😁
Thank you! I'm doing this soon.
Wow great tips ! Turned out great ! We painted ours but we had to sand use primer and then painted with cabinet paint. Ours turned out really well but cost a few hundred bucks and took 4 days.
fantastic!
Beautiful
Crazy Right how time flies! We have been living in our new (new to us) for 5 1/2 years already. We are just now getting around to renovating this year (house is only 14 years old) new flooring mostly and of course new water heater, dishwasher, might need a new a/c soon. Oh boy! Your cabinets look really nice. Think about the money you saved doing it yourself! Probably $25,000 at least. Kudos!
There's always something for sure! So glad we decided to stick to our guns and paint them vs stretch ourselves too thin by replacing. We chose to do the bathroom first and we're so glad we did!
Love it painted white
Great job and great tips ,thank u very much 🌷
They look so good! I prefer black hinges on the white cabinets. I know the brass and Copper is the new thing now, but I think it’s an older look. So glad you’re loving your new kitchen
Hehe it is a "new" thing I guess but brass has been around for ages, so to me it's always a classic look and warms up our white space :)
Very Nice!!!
Ugh you’re eyebrows are so perfect ! 😊 I know I know. Nothing to do with this video 👏🏻
That chalk paint is sooo good. I used the same for our dining room chairs and they came out beautifully. I know you’ve talked about it in your previous videos but I would love to hear about those beautiful countertops of yours.
That's awesome! I don't have a ton to say about them since we hired out the work, but we bought the counters through Lowes and had our carpenter cut, stain, and seal them for us. We chose Minwax Jacobean but to be honest I can't quite remember what he sealed them with. I'm about 90% sure it was Polyurethane :)
I ❤️❤️❤️ it!!!
You did good job
Wow! It’s been a year.. great video!
Thumbs up!! TFS
Happy 1 year! Love your videos!! I have a question for you, we're planning on putting ship lap in our kitchen- would you suggest using the chalk paint and more importantly the sealant on a "back splash" area? Thanks!!
I love your kitchen. Would love to have lunch there! :) LOL
We are doing this! We love your channel!!!
I'd love to hear how it goes!
Old World Home I will let you know!
Hope you post a video on the wood countertops. (or did I miss it?) I LOVE the look, especially with the white cabinets!
I have such a hard time painting cabinets - about 90% of our Kitchen cabinets are original to the home meaning they are 90+ years old I don’t love them but I appreciate there beautiful wood grain - I’m planing on striping and staining in the future.
thank you!
I painted with Rustoleum chalk paint, a roll top desk and several old cupboards without putting any sealer on....they get A LOT of wear and tear and they have held up beautifully.I am getting ready to use this same product on my kitchen cabinets....again,without any sealer. The sealer is for those who want their cabinets to look new and shiny.....if you want that old farmhouse look, leave it with just the chalk paint. This paint is different from all the others because it has a built in ultra matte finish,so it has a very light matte finish.Very smooth,as if there is a wax already on it.Because I like the old farmhouse look, water or dings will only make the cabinets look like they came out of an actual farmhouse.I have used many chalk paint brands and this is the best!
Oh I am going to try this!!!! Ahhhhh. I have never painted anything. Wish me luck!!!
Good luck! Let me know how it goes!
Great video 👌 This is the best, very simple and budget friendly. I'm so ready to do this!! I noticed you have two paint brushes on your amazon shopping list. Which paint brush did you use to apply the Polycrylic?
Thank-you :)!
You have inspired me to do this to my kitchen! Just been waiting on warm weather so I can paint with open windows or outdoors. I wonder if you should prime first then only need 1 coat of chalk paint or just use a few coats of chalk paint? Any idea? Thank you for the inspiration!!!
Um.... I kinda love this. Do you have a video on your counter tops!?
The Life of a Homemaker glad you enjoyed! We purchased the counters through Lowes and hired out the cutting/staining/sealing so no I don't have much info on that process. You can check out the description box of this video for specifics 💛
Not only label the hinges but label the doors and openings with a pencil 1,1, 2,2 so you can match the right door to right opening.
Thank you so much!! I was wanting to do this for our cabinets! Mine are already white, but need a new paint job!! Do you think I still use a deglosser before painting them? Or do you think I could just paint straight over the top of the already white cabinets?
