    In Part 2 I replace the shoulder buttons for some tactile, clicky ones as the left shoulder button was non-responsive.
    I also had to clean, and fix/DIY the power switch as that was failing.
    The eBay listing was £16 + £3.90 delivery, so just shy of £20 total.
    The switch you need is 6x6x5mm

    I just did the same mod to my GBA and couldn't figure out why both L+R registered as been held down all the time.
    After watching this you helped me figure out that indeed the metal legs that are supposed to hold the button in place do cause a full circuit.
    As soon as I trimmed them they worked perfectly.
    Thanks 😊

    Video would have been about 5 minutes shorter if you had a good pair of needle-nose pliers to bend some stuff in the beginning. XD
    Regardless, thank you very much for the in-depth video! My GBA has one non-clicky shoulder button and one clicky one, so I'll definitely be looking into replacing both if that is indeed the problem.

      Yeah I didn't anticipate the bending of the legs to be so time consuming aha
      Yeah over time they lose their rigidity and clicky feel so a simple replacement is all is needed :)
      Glad it helped you - thanks for commenting!

    Witch Temperatur did You solder? I have a Station and Make a ips Mod and my station needs 320 Celsius to solder good.

      I would turn it up to 700f or 370c… Those are optimal temperatures…

    I had the absolute same thing happening to me. L trigger is still dead, waiting for a replacement to arrive. But the gameboy was powering on and off very quickly. After inspecting the power switch that I already cleaned very shiny, I discovered that the metal upper cover of the power switch was broken. That was causing the weird connection. It broke in 2 pieces. A good blob of solder helped out and the gameboy runs good, except the L trigger of course.

    Are those shoulder buttons same as for DS? As my original DS has the left shoulder button broke (the little black top button) and would use these as i can’t find a replacement part for the DS

    Does yours still work? I got the same ones you did and the r button stops working, It was working perfectly until I dropped it in a case then it was as if the right button was always being held down but both the l and r button when pressed felt and sounded normal... I replaced the r button again with another one and again it worked perfectly but then I had it in my jacket in a case and all that happened was my jacket flew out and came back down and hit my leg hitting the gba where it felt was the front of the screen part, I checked it and of course the r button stopped working again! I do not understand why this would be happening my only guess is that the r button and l button replacements are cheap and are falling apart under minor hits to the console... Just bizzare how it's just been the r button twice in a row now

      Erm, I haven't really played this one so much - I have other GBA's that get played over this one so can't really comment. Only thing I could suggest is maybe when dropping it, it knocks something on the button that then registers as a press, like making contact with some part of the board or grounding out?

  • @Panko98

    Is the same type of switch (same dimensions) compatible with the GBA SP?

    • @TheRetroStation
      @TheRetroStation  3 роки тому +1

      Hey, sorry for the late reply - I actually think they might be smaller on the SP, but not 100%.

    did the push switch ever happen?

  • @SoundToxin

    I'm trying to do something similar and struggling to desolder the original. I have used flux, wick, a desoldering gun, and hot air. It just seems entirely stuck.

      I managed to get it off after just covering all 4 pins in a ton of leaded solder and moving the iron back and forth while pulling from the other side with a tweezers. It doesn't seem easy to separate the switch from the support bracket, which was likely my issue before. Did you have to cut them apart or something?

    • @TheRetroStation
      @TheRetroStation  Рік тому

      Sorry I didn't reply to your original comment - they can be tricky to remove likely due to age. The solder is no longer easily melted and maybe dirt and grime hinders too. But usually flooding some old solder with new fresh solder can help components to be removed easier. The switch support might be some legs that bend in slightly after being pushed through a via/hole in the board.

    i did change one of the original shoulder buttons for a "clicky" one and now it doesnt work 😅, any idea what it could be?

    • @TheRetroStation
      @TheRetroStation  Рік тому

      Doesn’t work as in the button doesn’t register the press or it doesn’t “click”? Or both haha

    • @alexsantos1016

      @@TheRetroStation it does click, it just as you said doesnt register the click.
      Ps. it worked well before i changed it 😅

      You might have a short somewhere or soldered legs of the switch isn’t making a solid connection. I’ve been out of the repair business for a while now so my knowledge is a little poor atm
