- Original recording of WELLERMAN, from 1977. Hit 'SHOW MORE' for lyrics...
We were down under in New Zealand with the CBC Vancouver crew filming our "The Irish Rovers in New Zealand" show. Co-Production: CBC & Television One New Zealand
In 1883 the waters around New Zealand were teaming with whales back in the whaling times. The Weller company owned by Weller Brothers of Sydney, was one of the leading firms employing many shore whalers and they were paid in goods while so waiting for the tea and rum to arrive the cry was "Soon May that Wellerman Come!" The Wellermen, supplied provisions to New Zealand shore whaling stations from their base at Otakou.
New version includes beginning of this recording, then with new verses and singing with present band. On Spotify open.spotify.com/track/7l7Y6l...
Thank you to the television crews in Auckland.
Sound consultant: Bud Dant
Sound: Graham Ridding, Bob Paley
Director: Ron Meraska
Producer: Ken Gibson
LYRICS
There was a ship that went to sea
The name of the ship was the Billy of Tea
The winds blew up, and her bow dipped down
Blow, my bully boys, blow
Soon may the Wellerman come
To bring us sugar and tea and rum
Some day, when the tonguin' is done
We'll take our leave and go
She had not been two weeks from shore
When down on her a right whale bore
The captain called all hands and swore
He'd take that whale in tow
Before the boat had hit the water
The whale's tail came up and caught her
All hands to the side, harpooned and fought her
When she dived down below
Soon may the Wellerman come
To bring us sugar and tea and rum
Some day, when the tonguin' is done
We'll take our leave and go
For forty days or even more
The line went slacked and tight once more
All boats were lost there were only four
But still the whale did go
Well, as far as I heard the fight's still on
The line's not cut, the whale's not gone
The Wellerman makes his regular call
T' encourage the Captain and the crew and all
Soon may the Wellerman come
To bring us sugar and tea and rum
Some day, when the tonguin' is done
We'll take our leave and go
Before all this #Seashanty craze happened we loaded a Sea Shanty playlist to Spotify - Songs of the sea, of love, and songs to raise the spirits! Here ye go open.spotify.com/playlist/2qW47cRzZlsVFZt0FuRm1h
The link isn't working for me for some reason. Can you give me the name of the Playlist so I can search Spotify?

Long live the Irish rovers.
I went from drinking and listening to the music of my ancestors to wanting to watch Avatar the Last Airbender in an instant XD
The young Scottish postman Nathan Evans has done a wonderful job with this old music - good on 'im! Everyone should also look into The Fishermans Friends. They brought Sea Shanties up to Platinum just a few years back. Look for their music and their film.
@Walter White Irish Rovers always promoting the next generation of Celtic musicians.
@Walter White walter what are you do- no I probably don't wanna know.

The Rovers sang 'The Wellerman' BEFORE it was cool.
And our grandparents listened to it before it was cool
As well as drunken sailor
*Before Nathan was everywhere
And its a better version
Sorry, but this song was cool in the 1850s when It was written
“Holy shit its happening, everyone stay calm!”

@@RunninGunner04 The song..
On my birthday? My favorite obscure sea shanty? The Irish rovers, my childhood favorite Irish folk band? And the song is getting more popular so I can sing it with people? Perfect.
Happy Birthday Ian.
@Corps I misread it as that as well until you pointed it out

This my friends is music! Rich, powerful voices! I forgot how much I loved Bob O'Donovan!
Loveeee itttt
Typical rainy New Zealand day. I remember when this was on TV in 78 or so.
Looking back at this and seeing the other videos, they messed yp on the speed timing of the lyrics. This is a masterpiece despite being very short
The Masters of the Shanties have returned to reclaim the throne
0:00-1:13 was the best part.

Great job boys! Many great memories of enjoying your music in the 70's and 80's. And I think you headlined the Grandstand show at Calgary stampede many a year back. Your joke was.. "our first gig in calgary twenty years ago was about two blocks from here.. now look how far we've come! Yeah about two blocks".

Time does certainly fly. Filmed in 1977 in New Zealand.
Life long Irish Rovers fan here! It's a strange thing that sea shanties are the cool new trend. The world is a strange place indeed, but I am incredibly thrilled that your music is reaching younger generations! #roverforlife
