George, I agree, great song, and a great tale to go with it. Having rediscovered you and your music...whether it's a full-fledged movie or at least some kind of documentary, SOMEONE needs to come talk to you and the surviving Rovers about your group history, honestly. My ancestors originally came from county MAYO, which according to my late Mom 👩 was located outside of Belfast, Ireland 🇮🇪. They and thousands more fled during the Irish Potato 🥔 Famine! We all came through Ellis Island before or after the Civil War, and we scattered all over the United States 🇺🇸 . Thanks for giving me chills George! The Irish Rovers story is an epic tale that needs to be shared with the world. I don’t think the younger generation knows just how popular this amazing group was and for George to continue the legacy as frontman for the band is heart warming. A movie doc should be made. Just the few stories Will Millar shared with me of the early days of The Irish Rovers had me yearning for more!

Listening to this on repeat for the last 30 mins. I am reminded of reading an article where a Republic of Ireland ambassador was quoted in turning the words: "these Irish are more Irish themselves" In Ireland's favor. He was speaking to an Irish-American audience. With regards to the question you ask, for me: a Dutchman who is specializing in Irish history, this song makes me confident that I could go for an Irishman although I played the English Hockey and play the English Rugby. (see history of the Gaelic Journal/League). And as Ireland atm is actively seeking immigrants who speak Dutch; would I want to be an Irishman, I can be an Irishman. As can you because already in 1894/95 the most Irish Journal of Irishness was actively asking Irish famine migrants (my interpretation of the Newfoundland bit) to come back to Erin. And as the song Everyone is Irish/the five sisters by the Irish buskers exclaims; "Everyone is Irish if they think they are" So if I am, you lads are definitely Irish. Seeing as listening to you makes me want to go a little bit further in researching Irish history (as I have been doing for 6 years through 8 papers, and I am 100% Dutch :D
Memories can last forever, those of Canada's Irish Rovers definitely will. Thanks so much for so much, and your newest songs are classics 1st class already.

BAND WITHOUT A COUNTRY
BALLAD OF THE ROVERS
VERSE 1:
WE LEFT OUR HOME IN IRELAND MANY YEARS AGO
AND CROSSED THE WIDE ATLANTIC TO A PLACE CALLED MIMICO
JUST OUTSIDE TORONTO WE STARTED OUR NEW LIFE
FAR FROM DEAR OULD IRELAND HER TROUBLES AND HER STRIFE
VERSE 2:
RAISED WITH LOVE AND MUSIC WE KNEW THE OLD SONGS WELL
I MET BIG JIM FROM BELFAST AND TOGETHER WE DID GELL
IT WAS DERRY’S QUAY AND BRIGID FLYNN AND WHISKEY IN THE JAR
WHEN JOE WOULD SING KELLSWATER THERE WAS QUIET IN THE BAR
CHORUS:
A BAND WITHOUT A COUNTRY A BAND WITHOUT A HOME
AND YET WE’RE ALWAYS WELCOME NO MATTER WHERE WE ROAM
NO ONE WANTS TO CLAIM US NO ONE KNOWS WE’RE THERE
A BAND WITHOUT A COUNTRY IS OUR CROSS TO BEAR
VERSE 3:
WE TRAVELLED CROSS THE COUNTRY TO CANADA’S WESTERN SHORE
WILL WAS SINGING CHILDREN’S SONGS ‘TWAS THERE HE JUMPED ON BOARD
WE LEFT FOR CALIFORNIA WITH A POCEKTFUL OF DREAMS
THE GOODSHIP IRISH ROVER WAS SAILING AT FULL STEAM
CHORUS:
A BAND WITHOUT A COUNTRY A BAND WITHOUT A HOME
AND YET WE’RE ALWAYS WELCOME NO MATTER WHERE WE ROAM
NO ONE WANTS TO CLAIM US NO ONE KNOWS WE’RE THERE
A BAND WITHOUT A COUNTRY IS OUR CROSS TO BEAR
VERSE 4:
THE ICEHOUSE AND THE TROUBADOUR BECAME OUR STOMPING GROUNDS
THE PURPLE ONION HUNGRY i THE CIRCUIT WE WENT ROUND
THE BITTEREND THE LUMBERMILL AND MECCA WERE THE CREAM
WE PLAYED THEM ALL FROM EAST TO WEST AND ALL SPOTS IN BETWEEN
CHORUS:
A BAND WITHOUT A COUNTRY A BAND WITHOUT A HOME
AND YET WE’RE ALWAYS WELCOME NO MATTER WHERE WE ROAM
NO ONE WANTS TO CLAIM US NO ONE KNOWS WE’RE THERE
A BAND WITHOUT A COUNTRY IS OUR CROSS TO BEAR
VERSE 5:
SHEL WAS WRITING STORES AND SINGING ON THE SIDE
HE LET US HAVE HIS UNICORN AND WE TOOK IT FOR A RIDE
IT SERVED US WELL A GOOD FEW YEARS FIFTY COMES TO MIND
WHEREVER WE WENT ROVING ROUND PROVIDENCE WAS KIND
CHORUS:
A BAND WITHOUT A COUNTRY A BAND WITHOUT A HOME
AND YET WE’RE ALWAYS WELCOME NO MATTER WHERE WE ROAM
NO ONE WANTS TO CLAIM US NO ONE KNOWS WE’RE THERE
A BAND WITHOUT A COUNTRY IS OUR CROSS TO BEAR
VERSE 6:
NOT IRISH ENOUGH FOR IRELAND THAT’S HARD TO UNDERSTAND
AND CANADA TURNED HER BACK BECAUSE WE’RE NOT FROM NEWFOUNDLAND
SO WE’LL LEAVE IT TO THE PEOPLE OUR FANS BEYOND COMPARE
THE ONES WHO HEAR THE MUSIC OF THE BOYS FROM GOD KNOWS WHERE
CHORUS:
A BAND WITHOUT A COUNTRY A BAND WITHOUT A HOME
AND YET WE’RE ALWAYS WELCOME NO MATTER WHERE WE ROAM
NO ONE WANTS TO CLAIM US NO ONE KNOWS WE’RE THERE
A BAND WITHOUT A COUNTRY IS OUR CROSS TO BEAR
VERSE 7:
GOLD RECORDS ON THE WALL A DOORWAY TO THE PAST
MEMORIES TO PONDER ON BUT MEMORIES NEVER LAST
BUT MUSIC LIVES FOREVER AND WE’LL ALWAYS HAVE A SONG
BUT STILL I HAVE TO WONDER WHERE THE HELL DO WE BELONG
CHORUS:

Fun fact : They made a song about Botany Bay
I just caught the new song you dropped on Spotify, Hey Boys Sing Us A Song. I don’t know if anything I said here or on Twitter was part of the inspiration or not, but it’s appreciated nevertheless. 😁. It’s definitely a song we need right now!! And it doesn’t matter if we agree on every little detail. Music is universal.
I love these guys !!
