Right on! THAT is Star Trek. The modern shows (yuk) should take a cue from this episode, with big ideas, moral dilemmas, and dont tell you how to think, but give you something to think ABOUT. This episode, if someone has never watched it before, and I had to pick an episode to show them the essence, that would be it.

I do understand why they started with LeVar on the bridge. When TNG started, he was probably the most well know actor in the cast due to Reading Rainbow. But moving him over to engineering was amazing, they noticed LeVar was pretty good in the technobabble and having him the chief engineer really helped out to flesh out how well LeVar and Spiner gelled with eachother. Besides the obvious Kirk - Spock - Bones triumvirate (unavoidable, because a core element of the series design), I think only O'Brian-Bashir did it better (completely unexpected, but the actors and characters just clicked during the early seasons of DS9).

His logic wouldn't allow Riker to wallow in self pity for the predicament he had almost put Data in, and he presented it to the sullen Riker in a way that evaporated his remorse and allowed him to see the nobility in his actions, when all Riker felt was his bitterness in being bound to the trial duty of taking a legal stand against his friend. So wholesome to see Riker beaming as arm in arm the two friends went to Data's party in that final scene. May we all have a friend like this❤️

She really was an asset. Too bad things didn't work out for her. I felt the icy treatment toward Data was a fantastic vehicle to show growth of both characters. Earned respect goes a long way. 'Ship shape & Bristol fashion' is a phrase meaning in good and seamanlike order with reference to the condition of a ship. The expression had its origin when Bristol was the major west coast port of Britain at a time when all its shipping was maintained in good order. Some Bristol born friends of mine were visiting the ST TNG sets when they were shooting this episode and got to meet Patrick Stewart afterwards. He's got connections to Bristol, having acted here frequently at the Bristol Old Vic theatre.

    • @nicholascross3557

Fact is that the old port of Bristol, on the Severn Estuary, had a tidal fall of about thirty two feet, meaning that some ships broke their spars on the quays when the tide went out. To avoid this, the spars would be folded, literally inside the 'ship shape.' So while today it is meant as 'in good order' originally to be "Ship shape and Bristol Fashion" meant 'properly prepared.'
      Sincerely, a naitive Bristolian.

The reaction that Riker had when he discovered Data's "Off Switch" was well played. Not many actors pull that off quite that well. The elation of finding his ace in the hole and then getting excited and THEN the immediate realization of what he just felt.

    • @dominantprime
      @dominantprime 6 місяців тому

I have to respectfully disagree. They played it completely wrong. No way would Riker smile/get excited at the prospect of winning the case. He just got done explaining he has no desire to prosecute at all since Data is his friend. I guess they felt the need to be heavy heanded / completely over the top to make sure even the dumbest in the audience realized he found something, but in doing so they lowered Riker's IQ by about 100 points to borderline mental disability levels. If I was the director, I'd say show him curious about reading something big he has found, but then immediately go dark at the realization. Smiling is just completely out of place and out of character. One of the only few issues I have with this otherwise great episode.

See, I think it's a big mistake to only do 4 episodes for season 3-7.
The thing is, the meat of TNG is in season 3-7. That's what people think of when they talk about how great TNG is. It's not the 4 movies, which are all pretty terrible (some people like First Contact). Whereas in TOS, the movies were an elevated culmination of the show and really showed off the original cast at their best. We really don't get that with the TNG movies.
Watching 4 episodes of TNG season 1-2 is fine, because season 1-2 are awful. But once you get into season 3-7, it's when the show becomes truly great and almost every episode is a slam dunk. Trying to pick only 4 episodes out of dozens of classic and well-written episodes in season 3 and 4 is just too limiting. There's no need to rush through these seasons to get to the movies, because the movies are no great reward. It's really the upcoming seasons that bring out the full richness and magic of TNG.
So I say, please reconsider Cassie. Bumping it up to 6-8 episodes a season would be a fitting and appropriate choice. The 4 TNG movies are NOT what TNG is all about, it's season 3-7.

It was a great show to help younger guys like myself back in the day in those areas. the fact also that Data was often the catalyst for these scenarios.. as a "learning being" was a great way for the audience to connect and learn along with him in a sense. there's a lot of kooky stuff in star trek in general but I've always appreciated Roddenberry's vision for the show in that respect: depicting a future where people valued and respected others.. and strived for peace and harmony while still appreciating different races and personalities for who/what they are. Q Who is a significant moment in Star Trek history, because it is the first time the Federation is put against a true existential threat. It and the two parter Best of Both Worlds (which you ABSOLUTELY MUST watch) give a sudden, very real sense that the Federation can be utterly destroyed, and very quickly. The introduction of the Borg changed Star Trek, and raised the stakes drastically. Q Who and Best of Both Worlds are also required viewing for the film Star Trek: First Contact.

I love to pass this on: that the college that I went to in California is the origin of the name "Borg". There's a building on the Pomona College campus of the Claremont Colleges which is called Oldenborg Center (the 'Borg for short), and it is a big cube and it is full of exchange students and international students, so nobody really talks to each other cuz no one speaks the same language, and people just sort of pass each other in the halls with their faces in whatever they're studying, but they all have the same goal in mind and are very serious about it... and apparently this image really stuck with some of the guys who were working on TNG, and they brought it with them and inspired the Borg of the Trek'verse. I love telling that story because I've been to that building and I get it.

For me, Season II of TNG still had that rocky, inconsistent feel to it. Watching the show, week to week could be frustrating at times, watching a dynamite episode one week then trudging thru three episodes over the next three, really sucked. The absence of Gates McFadden was deeply missed but the addition of Whoopi as Guinan was a great addition.
The best of season II are the four episodes listed here. The Measure Of A Man, & Q Who? are the best episodes of season II, & two best of the series run.
Season III is where the show gets its footing. My best of Season III
DEJA Q - "Yes, Mr.Data.I can now stub my toe with the best of them." Q loses his powers & chooses to be human. It doesn't go so well.
YESTERDAYS ENTERPRISE - The Enterprise D encounters a time portal & what comes out of it is a Federation ship from the past..., registry NCC -1701 C. USS ENTERPRISE. Definitely a holy sh*t! moment in the pantheon of Star Trek history.
SAREK - Spock's Dad arrives on the Enterprise, as Vulcan Ambassador. Sarek is trying to negotiate peace with the Romulans, but, one thing stands in his way - himself & his aging dementia.
THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS, PART I - The Borg have finally arrived in Federation space, assimilating anything in its path. Starfleet is no closer to finding a solution to deal the Borg hive, but, the Borg have a plan of their own. A plan that will change the crew of the Enterprise. Forever. Arguably the best episode of the series. The first strong season cliffhanger & a most definite "What the f**k?!" moment in Trek history.
These four episodes are pretty much mandatory viewing, because they embrace & make concrete Star Trek history.

Much like themes within the these episodes, the difference between Data and say a dishwasher or computer is a human presence; sentience. He has a conciseness, free will, and learns through events the same way humans do. While Data was created, he was created as an individual without ownership. Data is one of a kind. Even though there might be a similar android to Data, Data himself is an individual and independent entity. Another Data could be made and placed through the similar “life” events and a completely different “personality” could/would emerge. Those traits along with being made to be an individual, he can not be anyone’s property but his own, regardless of his originally created purpose.

Data was captured and put in an illegal, private art collection. The evil Collector's female assistant, who has befriended Data, helps him escape and is murdered by the Collector in the process. While Data is pointing his phaser at the Collector, he is beamed back to the Enterprise. Or Data was telling the truth that the prototype Mark IV Disruptor malfunctioned due to the transporter. So, the term “jumping the shark” refers to the show “Happy Days” when the character known as the Fonz infamously jumped over a shark on water skis in a particular episode. This signifies the point in a show or long-standing franchise when it defies logic and starts to go downhill. I mention this because in this season of TNG, Riker grew a beard and, coincidentally or not, the show not only improved from what came before, but gradually got better as the show progressed. 12:09 "merde" is French for "shit." Captain Jean-luke Picard is a French name. His character is from France and a part of me would have liked a French accent over the British one. I studied in France as a high schooler with the American Institute for Foreign Study. I was confused that my French instructor had an English accent until he explained that he had learned English in England. It was naive for me to think he should have spoke English like an American. Remember that foreigners believe we are the ones with the accent. When LBJ was elected POTUS, the South joked "Finally, a President that doesn't have an accent!". Funny thing though, many more Europeans now speak English with an American accent because a large chunk of their television programing is American with shows like "Friends". When I heard two women speaking with American accents in Scotland I asked what state they were from and they answered "Belgium". It's why so many British and Australian actors have such great American accents.
