It is cool. However it’s one of my least favorite things reactors do. So often I want to say stop trying to figure it all out and just enjoy. And that is usually when they are talking over important dialogue or actions so they are missing things that would help them figure out what’s next
From her first videos years ago, I noticed she has an insight about people or she notices subtle hints that I didn't. Like in this movie, I was sure Magneto was after Wolverine for some reason. Cassie picked up Rogue was the target right off. Maybe it's from her years of watching dramas and rom-coms...
I gave up on "The Right Stuff" when she was obsessing and GUSHING over the ROMANCE of Mr and Mrs Yeager at the start, it's a minor subplot that never gets mentioned again and I just could not stand the idea of her ignoring the history... he broke the FREAKIN sound barrier AND his ribs...... he's a FREAKIN MUTANT!!!!!!!....... and a LEGEND!!!!!! Much she learned the young paduan has. P.S. YES they are both in the movie and their love continued.... but it's not part of the movie.
@@chadfalardeau5396, hasn't it varied somewhat over the years? I dimly remember at one point he was in the WWI generation before his healing factor kicked in and he effectively stopped aging. I could be mistaken however.
Yep, Rebecca owned it as Mystique. Graceful, determined and vengeful. She optimised the discrimination that the mutants suffered, especially with the comment about not being afraid of going to school. That line hit home for me.
Cyclops' power is uncontrollable. As a child, he suffered an injury to the area of his brain that would give him the ability to control his power. That's why he has to wear specially-designed glasses.
Cyclops is similar to Spider-Man, where they're always operating below maximum power because they'd kill anyone they fight if they did. The few times they let loose are a sight to behold.
One of the fun stories I heard was that director Bryan Singer took one of the X-Men comics with Charles Xavier on the cover, handed it to Patrick Stewart, and Patrick asked, "Why am I on this comic book?" I feel like this movie was waiting for Patrick Stewart to grow into the role.
I read a Wizard magazine way back in the mid to late 90's where they were picking actors to play various comic book characters on film. Patrick Stewart was the pick to play Xavier. This was at least 4 years before the X-Men film came out.
When I was a kid my and my younger brother used to watch Star Trek the Next Generation and the animated X-Men series and we ALWAYS said the captain Picard would be the best real life professor X.
@@dmichael1172 The generic yellow and blue costumes were around in the late 80s after the team had drifted apart, but the comment was aimed at Wolverine.
@@jsuperflycit was aimed at fans of the source material. This was still when source material fans were the main audience for this genre so it was a wink and a nod. Once the movie was out though the comics took on the black leather suit look in hopes that any new fans would have a smooth jump in.
My brother doesn't get into movies too much, so when LOTR came out he didn't understand the hammer horror history of Christopher Lee. He thought Lee should have played Gandalf, I chuckled and explained how Lee *WAS* horror.
Oh this takes me back. This was one of the last movies I ever bought on VHS. I love watching you guys watch movies. You start off asking questions and remind me of every girl I've ever watched a movie with, but then you pick up on the story and just enjoy it for what it is. Cannot wait for X2!
Sir Ian Murray McKellen is Gandalf.....and Magneto.....and Macbeth.....and Richard III.... and Hamlet.... ....and Leigh Tebing (The Da Vinci Code)....and countless other roles on stage and in film. An extraordinary talent.
Blade and X - Men not only saved Marvel from bankruptcy, but made audiences take comic book movies seriously again. And some fun trivia regarding the end: A chess master was brought in to teach Patrick Steward and Sir Ian McKellen some moves, since neither one of them knew how to play chess in real life.
Actually this isn't entirely true. Blade and X-Men helped with the optics, but Marvel made very little off of these properties. It wasn't until later when they had Kevin Fiege and Marvel Studios that Marvel actually truly got out of bankruptcy. Marvel put up their characters as collateral to get the money they needed for a loan to make Iron Man. Iron Man is the largest turning point in the companies history because they made bank off of that and didn't need to share the money with another studio like they did Xmen. We all know the story from there. I have nothing but respect for older Marvel movies, but the company wasn't making enough to stay a float. An in house studio, Marvel Studios, was what they needed and it was a crazy gamble
An exert from an article: Then Marvel’s financial woes began, and Arad struggled to convince Hollywood executives of the company’s cinematic value. “It was literally a daily fight, trying to open people’s eyes to what was right in front of them,” he later said. Things began to change in the late ’90s, when Marvel began to find its feet again: Blade was a hit, and X-Men began to finally move ahead at Fox. The pickings for Marvel, however, were slim: Blade made $70 million at the box office, but the reward for Marvel, according to a Slate article, was a measly $25,000. The X-Men and Spider-Man movies were huge hits, but Marvel only saw a small percentage of the profits. “We were giving away the best part of our business,” Arad mourned.
@@niletaylor1103and of course, they went and screwed it up by waaay over doing it an forcing woke agendas in their movies (plus the writing itself is just bad).. now everyone is sick of marvel movies.

Anna Paquin (Rogue) was born in Winnipeg but was raised in Wellington, New Zealand. She won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her role in The Piano (1993) at the age of 11. She is also in Fly Away Home (1996) and Almost Famous (2000).
Some fun facts about this movie: Hugh Jackman's terrified reactions when he meets Ian McKellen are real; he was told Magneto was going to tear open the train car, and assumed that meant ripping off the door, not tearing the entire car in half. And in case anyone doubts it, they really _did_ tear open a train car using hydraulics. It was one of the main things they showed and talked about on the behind the scenes feature on the Special Edition DVD set. Safety on set wasn't as strict back then; some of the extras had to scramble to avoid the sparks. When Jackman stops falling during the Statue of Liberty fight, he lets out a real yell of pain; this is because the harness he was wearing slipped and pinched him in the groin. Also, Rebecca Romijn-Stamos accidentally kicked the senator for real at 16:34. Also, Ian McKellen actually declined the role of Gandalf because he was busy filming this; director Bryan Singer changed the filming schedule so McKellen could finish his scenes first at the end of 1999, and then travel to New Zealand in January 2000.
Yes, safety on set is much more strict now. Heck, you could pick up a prop gun on set and fire it at someone without a worry in the world. See? ~Alec B
Shout out to the truck driver! For those that don't know, the guy playing the truck driver is actually George Buza, the voice actor for "Beast" of the original X-Men 1992 animated series! Even though his role here is very minor, George Buza had said in an interview that his experience on the set was highly positive and encouraging. Bryan Singer (the film director) phoned him out for his audition and told George that they wouldn't even be making the movie were it not for the massive and unexpected success of the X-Men animated series, so having him for this cameo role was a small token of his gratitude for his work as Beast. *BONUS THING YOU MAY NOT HAVE KNOWN: George Buza was also one of the very few actors at the time that actually KNEW alot about the comics around when the X-men animated series was first being put into production. It's rumored that during his audition he initially wanted to be Wolverine, but he instead was offered the role of Beast which he took immediately because he knew he couldn't pass up an opportunity to play an X-men character.
No. In the context of the Marvel universe the word Mutant is NOT offensive. That is what they are. Every single Mutant possesses the exact same genetic marker that is evolved by tens of thousands of years. Marvel has their own offensive word for Mutants. It's "Mutie" and/or "Freak"
@@shadyrys618well as 2 ppl who clearly have never read an X-Men comic, then thinking “mutant” is a slur is actually how the word would be used in real life. Ppl would definitely use “mutant” as a slur towards marginalized groups. Hell, even “alien” is slur used as Latin immigrants to the US. Even “colored” was a slur towards black Americans, “greekling” was a slur towards Balkan ppl used by the Romans, “Punic” is technically a slur against North Africans used by the Romans. It’s not about ppl being “woke”, it’s about how words and their societal meanings change. Remember, “gay” just meant “happy” or “cheerful”.
As you probably figured out, Jennifer Lawrence only played Mystique in the later X-Men movies. The original Mystique is the beautiful Rebecca Romijn (who is now on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, btw!). Rebecca Romijn's makeup as Mystique is, actually, much more detailed and extensive than what they ended up using for Jennifer Lawrence later. Because Rebecca Romijn had worked as a model for many years, she had the endurance and body control to handle longer hours in the makeup chair and the discomfort of wearing a full-body makeup without it affecting her performance. She was basically entirely covered by a bunch of makeup appliances that had to be applied individually and it looks amazing! But, I do remember her mentioning in interviews at the time that she felt like only someone with modeling training would really have been able to handle it. She was apparently right because for Jennifer Lawrence they avoided showing the full Mystique makeup as much as possible and when they did, they ended up using a bodysuit instead. It looks fine but, you can tell it does not have quite the level of detail as this original one.
The U.N scene was filmed on my street (Central Commerce High School in Toronto) Everyone on the street got a letter , apologizing for the upcoming noise and traffic and a gift basket for our understanding. Really nice of them.
@@gregkirby9059 Technically Michael Keaton holds the record thanks to THE FLASH. 34 years, with Hugh Jackman about to set the Marvel record thanks to the new Deadpool movie (unless Patrick Stewart cameos as well, in which case both of them will share it).
These early X-Men films will remain my favorite marvel films. They were unbelieveable when they came out and they still hold up decades later. What a cast.
1. Magneto IS Gandalf 2. Sabretooth doesn’t die because he similar healing powers Logan has. Actually him and Wolverine’s are long time enemies in the comics. 3. Mystique was originally played by the stunning model Rebecca Romijn, and she was better than Jennifer Lawrence at this role. 5. There’s an X-Men you already saw in Deadpool: Colossus. You’ll see him again soon. 6. In the comics, Storm is Black Panther’s couple, but not here.
James Logan Howlett "Wolverine" has a special place in my heart. He tries to find a home and has been let down or broken every time. The comic "Old Man Logan" crushed me.
Supposedly he almost got nixed from LOTR because of conflicting schedules. He promised to do the X-Men franchise first. Apparently Singer promised Jackson unofficially that Ian would be on time in NZ.
Somethings you asked about. Magneto is considered to be the most powerful mutant in the world. His helmet does nothing but block Xavier's powers. Wolverine's powerset has claws, healing factor and enhanced senses. He knew Mystique was impersonating Storm because while she looked and sounded like Storm, she doesn't smell like her. Magneto controls magnetic fields. He controls pretty much all metals. Wearing anything metal would allow him to fly. Jean is a powerful Telepath/Telekinetic. However, she is inexperienced. Cerbero can't just be used by any Telepath. It requires a well trained mind. Jean has the powers, but not the experience to use Cerbero safely. Sabertooth has a powerset almost exactly like Logan's, only he has regular claws, a slightly weaker healing factor and is far stronger.
One of my favorite things in the series is the friendship/conflict between Xavier and Eric. They are like flip sides of the same coin that respect each other but disagree about methods and philosophy. You learn more of their back story in later movies.
Anna Paquin who played Rogue, was the 2nd youngest Academy Award winner in history. She was 11 when she won best supporting actress for The Piano, a favorite movie of mine. She was also the star of True Blood.
"How does controlling metal make him fly?" He can generate and control magnetic fields. Magnets can attract and repel. When he's "flying", he's manipulating magnetic fields to repel himself away from or draw himself closer to other magnetic fields.
@@hulkhatepunybanner I mean, it's from a comic book, so his powers are whatever fits the story, and he's definitely shown the ability to control the earth's field. In fact, he, (or one of the many mutiversal versions of Magneto, because multiverses always make things more complicated) has flipped the earth's magnetic fields multiple times. Although for the movie version, they obviously toned him down, so it may well be just the metal boots concept here.
"As I told you a long time ago, you're not the only one with gifts". Enjoy the ride with the X-Men. A lot of ups and downs in this franchise and it was fun to grow up with.
Patrick Stewart (Charles Xavier, Captain Picard) and Ian McKallen (Magneto, Gandalf) are not just excellent actors, but very close friends, in real life. Patrick Stewart wrote in his memoares about how his good friend reacted on the offer, of playing the captain of the Enterprise on the new Star Trek Show, back in the eighties. Ian told him to not take the offer. He said that he should stay in England and keep working as a theater actor. Working in TV or cinema would not be worth the effort. A waste of time. Patrick took the gig, nevertheless, and became a star. And so did his dear friend. Two decades later the old buddies fought against each other... as the X Men
Famke Janssen who plays Jean Grey also acted across Patrick Stewart in the Star Trek: The Next Generation Season 5 episode "The Perfect Mate" as well as being Xenia Onatop in James Bond GoldenEye
@@technofilejr3401 No I'm not so sure about that I think you are talking about Jeri Ryan still because I don't recall her being on any episode and I am a big fan of Star Trek and Star Wars as well.
There is a LOT of information in this movie they need to convey to an audience that is potentially unfamiliar with any of it. Lots of names and terms and phrases and such. As well as setting up the background character and world dynamics. And they manage it so well. On top of the movie itself being good. As an aside, Eric is by far my favorite villain. Just in general, in all media, every incarnation of him. He's so layered and understandable and well handled and feels real despite doing terrible things and killing so many people. And I adore how him and Charles are still able to retain some measure of friendship and understanding despite having different views and going to battle on opposite sides over them.
37:48min "What else is she in?" Her name is Anna Paquin, my favourite movie she was in is called "Almost Famous" you might recognize her from a t.v. series in the early 2000s called "True Blood", but if you recognize her it's prob's from her child acting days in the Piano or Amistad.
I'm thrilled that you enjoyed X-men and the amazing debut of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. Sabretooth (The big Yeti Guy as you described him) also has a rapid healing ability and super senses similar to Wolverine. This is what allowed him to survive getting stabbed multiple times in the chest by Wolverine's claws. Sabretooth is a frequent enemy of Wolverine's in the comic books.
In 1978 I was a 9 year old that hated to read when my friend showed me the comic X-Men #112. On the cover was Wolverine trying to hold back his own claws from impaling his face while Magneto controlled those claws. I was instantly hooked. I had to know who these colorful characters were. Comics like this helped me to become a voracious reader. The X-Men, and particularly Wolverine, became like family to me and I enjoyed following their adventures. I remember feeling immense joy watching this in the movie theater. There are some hit and miss moments throughout all these but it's been a boyhood dream come true to see these characters on the big screen. A few answers for the ladies: Magneto cannot fly as Superman can. He actually floats or rides along the magnetic fields that flow around the planet. Wolverine's bones were bonded with a near indestructible metal known as Adamantium. Previously thought to be the world's hardest metal, until Vibranium was discovered. Captain America's shield and Black Panther's suit are made of Vibranium. I'm excited to see you delve further into the X-Men universe. While the movies and the comics are vastly different, I think you'll enjoy the films quite a bit. Even the sub-par ones.
They were masters of their craft back then. Those covers told a story in one shot. I started with G.I. Joe #48, with Zartan hiding behind a wall labeled G.I. Joe headquarters, holding Gung-Ho in a headlock with his gun drawn.

Not a whole lot of comic book readers left now but the Chris Claremont/John Byrne (and later Jim Lee) run on X-men in the mid 80's and early 90's is legendary. A lot of the stuff in the Bryan Singer X-men movies are based on these comics.
Except that Bryan Singer literally banned comics from his sets. Feige, as a producer, had to sneak Jackman comics for inspiration. He also apparently had to inform him that wolverines are real animals. 😂
He banned the cast from reading them because he didn't want them forming preconceived notions about their characters. He himself isn't really a reader either but he did base a lot on the animated series, which in turn, is an adaptation of a lot of the Claremont/Byrne run.
I was waiting for the "is this Gandalf?" line right from the beginning 🙂 And I especially always loved the relationship between Professor X and Magneto. They are close friends who went completely opposite ways, but always had and still have biggest respect for another. Quite unusual story telling.
Just in case you forgot (you did) the "Lazer guy" was introduced by Xavier to Wolverine earlier in the film as Cyclopes. Remember that? Funny girls, Trix are for kids! 😅

I LOVE the relationship between Xavier and Eric. Look at them as Xavier is MLK and Eric is Malcom X. Both want the same goal for their people, but both go about it in two completely different ways. They respect eachother and care about one another but are enemies! I just love that!
The fact that Ian Mckellan could play both gandalf and magneto so well in my opinion really shows that he's one of the best actors. I don't think many could do both so convincingly.
No girls, don't worry. Rogue/Marie only put Cody (that's supposed to be his name) in a coma for several months. He lived; but I don't think they ever reconnected.
On the dvd, there is a special feature where they show 3 of the X-Men run up to the screen and pose, then a guy dressed as Spider-Man come up behind them and then surprisingly admits he's in the wrong movie.
YES! It’s an Easter egg, found on one of the menus, as the ice rose on the screen that is selectable, even though it looks just like it’s a part of the screen. Honestly, I miss when DVDs and BRs had Easter eggs like this.
True. The blast causes no heat. He has even used the blast to safely "Catch" falling people and cushion their fall. People often get that wrong. Same with video games that give the Spider-Man villain Shocker electrical powers because of his name when in fact he has zero electrical powers.
@fluxcapacitor007 I also wished they gave Jubilation Lee, AKA Jubilee (Yellow Sweater in the classroom scene for people who dont know), an actual role in XMen 2 or possibly 3 as well. She's 1 of 2 XMen Team Members of Asian Descent and my favorite XMen aside from Gambit.
Hello Cassie and Carly Yes, that is the same actor Ian McKellen who would play Gandalf for the next 3 years after this one. The girl (Rogue - Anna Paquin) that kisses the boy did not 'kill him'. She just sort of drain his energy (life force) and puts him in a minor coma. Anna was also 'Sookie' in "True Blood". She was also one of the groupie girls in "Almost Famous". She was in "Amistad" and "The Piano" as a young actress. She also has been in "The Squid and the Whale", "Scream 4", and "The Irishman". In this first movie, Mystique is played by Rebecca Romijn Stamos, former supermodel turn actress. Across various comics, there has been a love triangle between Jeanne Grey, Scott Summers, and Logan. Sabertooth has the same mutant abilities as Logan except he is more mentally imbalanced and on the mean side. "What did you expect?... yellow spandex?" This is a reference to how the original X-Men in the comics dress. To not spoil too much, all I will say is that 'military base' that Logan (Wolverine) will go look into and which he has nightmares about is in Canada. The backstory to most of the other mutants will be explained or alluded to in the following movies, just be patient. They will change a few things from the comics to make it more generally appealing, but since you don't know the background, it will not matter too much for you. So I have you enjoy the ride of discovery of "The X-Men".
Little things: Magneto "flies" by wearing clothing infused with metal then uses his magnetism powers to move himself around. You will see in the next movie how. Cyclops' power isn't laser eyes, but physical concussion. Basically an energy punch. A VERY powerful punch. The wider he opens his eyes (or visor), the more powerful the blast.
Anna Paquin who played Rogue, is an incredible actress. She won an academy award for best supporting actress for her role in the Piano amd she was only 11 years old. I loved her in the HBO series True Blood as the main character Sookie Stackhouse. She was so adorable I'm that role. A good vampire series to react to and surprised not many UA-cam reactions to that show.
Interestingly enough, Stephen Moyer, who played the character of Bill Compton in True with Anna Paquin, would become her husband, and she'd give birth to a set of twins by him
Anna Paquin (Rogue) won Best Supporting Actress for her role in The Piano (a must-watch) with Holly Hunter and Harvey Keitel. She was also in She's All That (supporting Rachael Leigh Cook), and infamously, in HBO's True Blood. Ray Park (Toad) was a bonafide wushu practitioner before becoming an actor and played Darth Maul in Star Wars, as well as Snake Eyes in the GI Joe franchise. The producers cast Russell Crowe for Wolverine but he turned it down and recommended Hugh Jackman. Dougray Scott was cast as a replacement, but he was injured during the filming of M:I 2 (aside from being told by Tom Cruise to decline), so Hugh finally got the call.
@@noodlem5000I wouldn't be too sure about that because then they would've been like "Hey, that's the girl from that one movie with the birds and the guy from Dumb and Dumber."
Actually, Russell Crowe was never cast as Wolverine, though he did recommend Hugh Jackman, and Dougray Scott didn't drop out due to injury. Mission Impossible 2 went way over on their shooting schedule, and Dougray couldn't leave the production in time to film X-Men.
34:20 common misconception: he doesn’t “control metal,” he controls magnetic fields and the manipulation of metal is the byproduct of that ability. He doesn’t fly in the traditional sense (i.e. Superman)…the magnetic fields around him allow him to “fly.” Think about the resistance two magnets have when the same ends face each other.
The thing that makes me laugh looking back at the first X-Men movie is Hugh Jackman's physique. He's in great athletic shape but compared to future instalments where he's absolutely jacked, he looks tiny. I saw X-Men in the theater when it came out and loved it.
Toad was played by Martial Artist, Ray Park. Also known for playing the physical role (not speaking) of Darth Maul as well as The Headless Horseman in the Johnny Depp version of Sleepy Hollow.
He did have a single line of dialogue in the very beginning of The Phantom Menace: "At last we will reveal ourselves to the Jedi. At last we will have revenge".
@@PhysicalMediaPreventsWea-bx1zm That line was performed by a voiceover artist. If you listen to an interview of him, you'll see that wasn't his voice.
I am actually shocked that after doing this channel for years and watching so many movies, Cassie still hasn't seen X-Men. Just from a historical perspective, this movie was basically the ground floor of the modern resurgence of the superhero genre. There's a direct line from the success of X-Men in 2000 to the huge popularity of superhero movies that's still going 24 years later.
The fact that Magneto doesn't want to be on a register listing people for their difference, and his extreme response to it makes so much sens coming from a kid who knew concentration camps. Also, these early superhero movies remind me why I loved them as a kid, the theme is of growing up feeling different and rejected, but that difference is what makes you strong. Nowadays the superhero theme is a power fantasy for gym bros.
Anna Paquin (Rogue) was famously in several films as a youth like Andre and Fly Away Home before starring in XMen and later was Sookie Stackhouse on HBO's True Blood.
I dont know if you noticed, but if you pay attention the hot dog vendor or whatever it is when Kelly was walking on the beach, you'll see Stan Lee (the older gentleman with the shades) And Sabertooth has the same healing factor as Wolverine. He's just more psychotic
She wasn't shown much in the reaction but the teenage girl looking at Logan at 13:23 who ran through the Professors door later in the scene is Shadowkat (Kitty Pryde) who made her first appearance in X-Men #129 (October, 1979). So yes, that is Gandalf as Magneto! Fun fact, Toad is Darth Maul (the red-faced villain) from Star Wars The Phantom Menace. The actress playing Jean Grey was in an episode of Star Trek The Next Generation, and the actress playing Mystique plays Number One on the current Star Trek series (and her husband is in Star Trek, too!)
Ray Park, the actor who portrays Toad, is the same actor who portrayed Darth Maul in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace (Episode 1). He’s a master martial artist but his voice was overdubbed in Star Wars.
Wolverine/Logan is a fellow Canadian Cassie and Carly. Also good job immediately recognizing actor lan McKellen/Gandalf Cassie, but you weren't sure at first. It's fun watching you both recognize the actors.
The man who played Toad (the guy who climbed the walls and had the huge elastic tongue) is Ray Park, who also played Darth Maul in Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace.
They did not necessarily know they would be making more at this point this was literally the FIRST consequential comic book movie franchise in decades, so know one really knew if the public would like it or not, I saw it in theaters like 3 times as a kid :) I'll never forget it :)
Actually the bone claws are canon. In a storyline Magneto in a fit of rage pulls the adamantium from Wolverine he survives because of his healing ability. Later while recovering during an exercise in the danger room out of instinct he pops the bone claws for the first time much to his and everyone else's surprise
Mine to. X-Men were always my fav squad, obviously had my favorites but loved them all. Unlike marvel and DC where I only had a couple favorites, Spiderman, Batman, Ironman.
X-Men has always been my favorite Marvel comic. Basing Professor X & Magneto on MLK Jr and Malcolm X was genius. As far movies after Blade, there was this. X-2, First Class and Days of Future Past are the highlights of the franchise. Recently I might say X-Men '97
@@jerryward3311 If they did it right. But Disney. The older couple in X-Men Origins: Wolverine were named Travis and Heather Hudson. So they have already done a nod to Guardian and Vindicator.
Yes! Many people who know essentially nothing about X-men know Wolverine, this big tough brute with crazy metal claws. And the movie introduces him that way. But then right afterward they have this interaction to tell us that every time those big claws come out costs Logan something. Cool way to subtly shift preconceived notions.
flashback to high school when I asked my teacher if it was possible for skin to be cut then heal then be cut repeatedly or would it eventually loose the ability to heal or something. The teacher had this horrified expression until I told him I was just wondering about wolverine's hands/knuckles if it were more like real life. lol
I love how willing Logan is to take pain for other people cause in the end he knows he'll live through it and be unscathed. It's what makes him a hero and not an anti-hero.
Hugh Jackman is an amazing actor. He has a cameo in Night at the museum 3 and he switches to his Wolverine character in a second and you can feel his energy.
Huge Jackman was the worst pick for Wolverine they could've done much better and as far as it goes for the director and casting director they have no taste in who is the best qualifieds to be Wolverine and the movie some of the character are completely different from the comics and the guy who directed the movie is a total amateur.
Just so you know, Cyclops doesn't shoot lasers from his eyes, it's a kinetic pulse. It's essentially a push. By adjusting his visor, it can be hard or more precise.
24 years ago when this came out I was 14 years old (hearing that made me feel old . I grew up with the original animated series (which you should check out on your own after you're done the series if you continue and after X men 97) last reaction I watched of this was Kaielles. I was waiting for you to realize Magneto was played by Ian McKellen. If you want to see Anna Paquin who plays Rogue in other movies you should look for the Piano (she won an Oscar for it) Fly away home and she was in the show True Blood . Great to see you both react to this.
You’re in for a wild ride here, ladies. The X-Men is what I consider to be second best team behind the Avengers; on the account that they’re both from Marvel so they existed in the same universe as Spider-Man, Guardians of the Galaxy, and of course, the Fantastic 4. Comic book-wise, not in the movies, mind you. This is the beginning of a long journey of a franchise that has touched the hearts of many ever since their first debut back in the 60s and the highly praised TV series in the 90s that has recently returned for a continuation on Disney+. Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr as Professor X and Magneto are true polar opposites: one with the vision of coexistence while the other has the dream of an annihilation of the very race that despise them to no end. Keep an eye out for Logan for he is the one mutant in the team with the most tragic backstory ever that made him the hero that he is today. Good luck. P.S in the MCU, Wanda and Pietro Maximoff, aka Scarlett Witch and Quicksilver are actually both children of Magneto himself.
It's funny how the back up options can end up being so iconic and often times the best option, like with Neo. Keanu might not have been the best but definitely iconic.
Who tells you this stuff because you are dead wrong. Dougray was cast in this. There was no backup actor. Mission impossible 2 went over budget and he couldn't get out of it so he lost the role. Hugh Jackman came in to audition right before they were about to start shooting and was offered the role because they were going to start in A couple of days and he came in highly suggested. He even came in dressed as is character curly in the stage production Oklahoma because he had to get back to work afterwards. Edit: Dougray went over schedule on mission impossible 2 by 2 weeks. Blade and X - Men not only saved Marvel from bankruptcy, but made audiences take comic book movies seriously again.
And some fun trivia regarding the end:
A chess master was brought in to teach Patrick Steward and Sir Ian McKellen some moves, since neither one of them knew how to play chess in real life.
An exert from an article:
Then Marvel’s financial woes began, and Arad struggled to convince Hollywood executives of the company’s cinematic value.
Don't forget Sam Raimi's Spider-Man which came out a year after X-Men.

Good behind the scenes info, enjoyed it. May have to get that special edition dvd set.

She's 1 of 2 XMen Team Members of Asian Descent and my favorite XMen aside from Gambit.
Punches from the punch dimension.
@@ivanribnikov2001so stupid and yet his other brothers have scientifically explained powers
Hello Cassie and Carly
Yes, that is the same actor Ian McKellen who would play Gandalf for the next 3 years after this one.
Little things:
Magneto "flies" by wearing clothing infused with metal then uses his magnetism powers to move himself around.
Interestingly enough, Stephen Moyer, who played the character of Bill Compton in True with Anna Paquin, would become her husband, and she'd give birth to a set of twins by him
I love that show, but may be too sexual for a lot of Reactors. Sure wish someone would though.
Dougray Scott was cast as a replacement, but he was injured during the filming of M:I 2 (aside from being told by Tom Cruise to decline), so Hugh finally got the call.
aye, The Piano is one I've been recommending them for some time, though not sure they'll ultimately like it, I think they should give it a go
I’m sure they’ve seen Fly Away Home
Anna was also in Scream 4 for absolutely no reason lol
@@noodlem5000I wouldn't be too sure about that because then they would've been like "Hey, that's the girl from that one movie with the birds and the guy from Dumb and Dumber."
Actually, Russell Crowe was never cast as Wolverine, though he did recommend Hugh Jackman, and Dougray Scott didn't drop out due to injury. Mission Impossible 2 went way over on their shooting schedule, and Dougray couldn't leave the production in time to film X-Men.
17:31
"So, His Mutation Is He Can Heal Himself?"
That's only part of Wolverine's abilities, he's also got all 5 senses heightened
He also has the ability to defend against psychic powers, but I'm not sure if that's one of his mutant abilities or not
Was a reason ever given in the comics why he has regeneration *and* heightened senses? The two don't seem all that connected, biologically.
@@Zso-VIII I believe it's because he's a "feral" mutant. Most of the more animalistic mutants like Beast and Sabretooth also have heightened senses.
@@chadfalardeau5396 So the mutant gene isn't random mutation, it grants 'themed' mutations or has a particular direction/commonality?
@@Zso-VIII Or the writers ran out of ideas for abilities and just gave several of them the same one
Yes, same actor who played Magneto played Gandolf. He’s such an amazing actor!
The actor playing iceman is actually a twin. He was involved with dc, when both brothers played characters on the superman series "smallville"
Ohhhhhh so was it his twin who _actually_ played Lamplighter? 😂😂😂
I learned this on the commentary, cause if they had known, they would have used Aaron for that shot where Iceman shows up twice.
The thing that makes me laugh looking back at the first X-Men movie is Hugh Jackman's physique. He's in great athletic shape but compared to future instalments where he's absolutely jacked, he looks tiny. I saw X-Men in the theater when it came out and loved it.
He's still too big considering Wolverine is supposed to be like 5' 3" but who doesn't love Hugh Jackman for the role.
Before the juice.
Roids...
Being an X-Men fan growing up I couldn't wait to watch this in theaters. I must have seen it 30 times at the cinema and I'm not exaggerating.
same with Rambo in first blood vs Rambo later
Toad was played by Martial Artist, Ray Park. Also known for playing the physical role (not speaking) of Darth Maul as well as The Headless Horseman in the Johnny Depp version of Sleepy Hollow.
Wow, I didn’t even recognize him. Amazing how different he looks in xmen.
He did have a single line of dialogue in the very beginning of The Phantom Menace: "At last we will reveal ourselves to the Jedi. At last we will have revenge".
Good to know.
@@PhysicalMediaPreventsWea-bx1zm wrong Maul had an line but it was dubbed over, George Lucas decided not to use Ray Park's real voice
@@PhysicalMediaPreventsWea-bx1zm That line was performed by a voiceover artist. If you listen to an interview of him, you'll see that wasn't his voice.
Rogue's actress, Anna Paquiin, also played the main character in the vampire TV series, True Blood
James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender also played soldiers in Band of Brothers as Pvt. James Miller and Pvt. Christianson respectively
Anna Paquin played Rogue. She also, was a main character in True Blood.
👌
Church Of Marvel gets an amen!!! 🤲🏻
True, but it's not still going strong now is it, it's in a real hole.
Blade as well
The head of the MCU Kevin Feige was a producer on X-men and helped keep it closer to comic accurate.
36:37, David Hayter as the security guard. He was the screenwriter (one of, at least) for the film. You may know him as Solid Snake
Anna Paquin (Rogue) was famously in several films as a youth like Andre and Fly Away Home before starring in XMen and later was Sookie Stackhouse on HBO's True Blood.
I dont know if you noticed, but if you pay attention the hot dog vendor or whatever it is when Kelly was walking on the beach, you'll see Stan Lee (the older gentleman with the shades)
And Sabertooth has the same healing factor as Wolverine. He's just more psychotic

Pretty sure that's everyone in this film who's important? Knowing myself I no doubt missed someone really important lol
Lol why you are mentioning Wanda, pietro and kamala? They have nothing to do with this film
@@resulnaki May as well mention them as both Wand and Pietro appeared alongside Toad in their first appearance. Also different Ms. Marvel, Carol was actually Ms. Marvel during this time and would later become Captain Marvel decades later.
Did he play in Men In Black ?
Referencing WOLVERINE

I'll never forget it :)
The guy who plays Toad (the jumpy bad guy with the tongue) is Ray Park, who played Darth Maul in Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace.😊
Wolverine has his skeleton bonded to Adamantium, an indestructible metal. He can heal from anything and has super-keen senses.
Oh yeah, he has claws.
Mechanical claws....origins should never have said otherwise! Lol
@@brandonparisien2381yeah I just ignore that little retcon.
Actually the bone claws are canon. In a storyline Magneto in a fit of rage pulls the adamantium from Wolverine he survives because of his healing ability. Ever since the 90s X-Men cartoon the X-Men have been and always will be my favorite superhero team. And the new X-Men 97 cartoon is amazing
Mine to. X-Men were always my fav squad, obviously had my favorites but loved them all. Unlike marvel and DC where I only had a couple favorites, Spiderman, Batman, Ironman.
I really liked Michael Kamen's score for this film R.I.P.
I like how they take that little theme and turn into the tail-end of the 20th century fox logo in the latter films
Michael Kamen knocked it out of the (not Ray) Park in this film.
X-Men has always been my favorite Marvel comic. Basing Professor X & Magneto on MLK Jr and Malcolm X was genius. As far movies after Blade, there was this. X-2, First Class and Days of Future Past are the highlights of the franchise. Recently I might say X-Men '97
Anna Paquin aka Rogue won an Oscar for The Piano as a kid. But she is most famous for playing Sooki in True Blood. You guys would like it.
“There’s a yeti mutant?”
There is Wendigo but that advanced x men. Let’s stick to 101 for now
And Sasquatch. Plus apparently actual Sasquatches running round Canada.
Sasquatch is also not a mutant he’s a gamma radiation experiment gone wrong - similar to (but obviously not quite the same as) the hulk
Would love to see an Alpha Flight movie!

perfectly sets up his characters relationship with pain :)
Don't question it bub.. .

I don't know if this was mentioned but you can think of Professor Xavier as Martin Luther King Jr and Magneto as Malcolm X and the struggle to be a mutant with the civil rights movement .
Dougray Scott almost auditioned as Wolverine, but got caught up on Mission Impossible 2, and Hugh Jackman was the backup plan
I don’t even think he had to audition. He was offered the role straight up, but his commitment to M:I2 forced him to back out of X-Men.
I think he did audition and was even already cast... but injured his back on a stunt on MI2? That's how I remember it.
Scott was given the role but had to drop out.
This role would have changed his life.
Anna Paquin played Rogue and among other appearances, she was the magnificent lead in True Blood.
23:20 He can create magnetic fields, this is how he can control metal, and also levitate. Professor X explained this earlier in the movie. :)
Yeah, his power isn't controlling metal but magnetism.
But even without a magnetic field he could still fly just by having metal on the bottom of his shoes or something.
Rebecca Romjin starred as Mystique in X-Men (2000), X2 (2003), and X-Men: The Last Stand (2006) while Jennifer Lawrence starred as Mystique in X-Men: First Class (2011), X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014), X-Men: Apocalypse (2016), and Dark Phoenix (2019).
