Yes! It's perhaps less of a rom-com because of the situation that Dave is in, but Kevin Kline plays such a kind and decent man that I think you will find him very appealing.
I have to second (or fifteenth or eighty-second) the recommendation of Dave. It's such a fun little lighthearted (for the most part) take on similar territory and Kevin Kline, Sigourney Weaver, and Charles Grodin are all wonderful!
"My name is Bob Rumson, and I'm running for president. I'm Andrew Shepherd, and I AM the president." I love this closing speech, plus Douglas and Bening have excellent chemistry.
Thanks, I always wondered about that. It was easy to imagine that the movie could have inspired the TV series. They are very similar in tone and 'feel.'
@@madpadukNot quite. Sorkin reused the line asking about the virtue of a proportional response, but the emotions behind it are totally opposite. In the movie, Pres. Shepherd is concerned about civilian casualties, like the hypothetical Libyan janitor. In the show, Syrian Air Defense bombs a U.S. transport plane carrying Pres. Bartlet’s personal physician, and he’s pissed off and wants to basically level Syria to the ground (a military aide asks him if he wants to “carpet-bomb Damascus”). Bartlet wants a “disproportional response,” until Leo talks him down.
Michael Douglas, Annette Benning, and Martin Sheen play their roles very well in this movie. However, this movie really shows the versatility of Michael J Fox, an actor robbed of so many more performances due to Parkinson's disease. Back to the Future launched him into the movie landscape while Family Ties introduced him to American audiences through television. Other films kept him in the family-friendly genre for a while, such as Teen Wolf and Doc Hollywood. This film and his trip into horror with The Frighteners showed that Michael can play the very serious roles. Homeward Bound and Atlantis the Lost Empire showcase his voice acting ability. Spin City forever stands as his best adult role on TV. He now stands as an example of never letting a physical challenge from stopping him from speaking out and moving towards finding a permanent end to every neurological disease and disorder.
The performance he gave was spectacular, and watching this reaction I just realised it took 2 actors in the West Wing to almost match it and those were both very good actors. Michael J Fox was a massive talent as an actor and is a wonderful human being.
As soon as I saw this, I thought "Oh, she is going to LOVE this movie." How can you not? It's just a great film with a stellar cast and awesome dialog.

Just a sweet heartwarming film. My mom likes it a lot. Being a Sorkin penned film, there’s lots of standout dialogue. Two such lines I always get a kick out of being Shepherd’s line, “You think there’s a florist in there planning an assassination on the off chance that I MIGHT be stopping by?” and at the end when A.J. asks how Shepherd plans to win Sydney back, Shepherd admits, “Well, I haven’t worked that out yet. But I’m sure that groveling will be involved.”

18:34 " 'What About Bob.' That's -- That's that guy, that's -- Right?" Yes. That's Richard Dreyfus. You've also seen him (much earlier in his career) in Jaws as the marine biologist from out of town who ultimately joins the sheriff on the fishing boat.
"Mr. Smith Goes To Washington (1939.b&w), traditionally considered a classic and major romantic-comedy-drama with a political twist. Doing the research for this movie is what got Sorkin to write The West Wing. He had so much information about how American politics in D.C. work, and so many ideas for stories about these characters, and no way to fit it into a 2-hour film, so he pitched it as a TV series. You can absolutely see who all of these characters become: AJ (played by Martin Sheen who becomes Jed Bartlet) becomes Leo (same name as Sydney's boss); Mrs. Chapel (President's secretary) become Mrs. Landingham; Louis (Michael J Fox) is a hybrid of Josh and Sam; Leon (David Paymer) becomes CJ, and so on. Beyond Martin Sheen's promotion, Anna Deveare Smith, who plays Robin McCall here, played Nancy McNally on West Wing; Nina Siemazko (Sydney's roommate) played Bartlet's middle daughter, Ellie; Joshua Malina (whom you recognized from Scandal) played Will Bailey on West Wing, and so on. He referred to this as the dress rehearsal for West Wing.
Other Presidential movies i recommend: "Dave", "My Fellow Americans", and "My Date With the President's Daughters"(which is an oldschool Disney Channel movie 😂).
Not forgetting, Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind...we're getting into dangerous territory here..., when Actors could 'act' - & not work for Disney or Marvel....

Aaron Sorking who wrote that movie also wrote West Wing which had Martin Sheen as the president, it also had Josh Molina one of the presidents aids in that movie briefly in the TV show. West Wing came out in 99 this movie came out in 95. It makes you wonder if the success of this movie didn't catapult West Wing TV show to be created and almost over night success.
I was in a cheap gas station once and saw this DVD as a double feature with DAVE, which is another cute US president movie with Kevin Kline, Sigourney Weaver. It was $5. This was years before streaming was a thing.
'Dave' is such an underrated classic; one that I love going back & watching every year or two. Such an adorable, heartwarming movie; wish it got more attention from reactors!

The "Girl standing in front of the boy..." line is from Notting Hill. If you haven't seen it you should react to it. It's another romcom from the 90s with Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant.
When I first moved to the northwest I went to a party on the 4th of July and the deal was everybody had to bring something that was salmon inspired. I never realized all the dishes salmon salads suits it was insane and insanely good
This movie was actually the inspiration for the West Wing series. It was originally pitched for Michael Douglas to star in it, but when he turned it down, Martin Sheen knocked it out of the park.
I also think the sitcom "Spin City" which came out a year after this movie where Michael J. Fox is a similar character except for the mayor of New York City.
The original concept of The West Wing was supposed to focus on the staff, and not so much on the President himself. If you take a look at the Pilot episode you will note that Martin Sheen only came in at the very last few minutes. It was his performance that prompted the writers to swing the camera in his direction and take notice, because he was definitely a force to be reckoned with. We should be glad that they did, one of the best TV shows of all time.
"Girl standing in front of a guy", the quote is. It is from Notting Hill, Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant. Absolute favorite romantic comedy. You are going to love it.
The end where they were imitating the State of the Union tradition, made me so sad as now they no longer respect the office of the Presidency and will be rude and down right evil towards The President they don't like!!
This is one of my favorite comfort movies, great writing, the acting is tremendous, Reiner did an excellent job directing, low key always in the mood to put this on, what a picture!
63 percent was great in the 90s. It'd be OUTSTANDING today. I don't know how long its been since the president cracked 50%. Not just the current one, ANY of them.

Michael J Fox's performance as Lewis was the seed that led to Spin City, a humorous political sitcom that highlighted Fox's talents tremendously well.

@@ct6852 And if that story were to include Annette Benning 28 years ago, you couldn't go wrong there.
@@SeanBlader She was gorgeous. Still not sure what her actual hair color is, though.
Other films Rob Reiner directed:
"This Is Spinal Tap"
"Stand By Me"
"When Harry Met Sally"
"Ghosts Of Mississippi"
Michael Douglas was a main character in basic instinct. Rumson was the guy in Jaws.
Don't forget Michael Douglas was also the lead in "Fatal Attraction" That needs to go on the watch list as well! And bring Carly!
Love Basic Instinct.
Fellow Cdn here. Loved Michael D in this one. Give Dave (1993) a watch. A bit more light hearted with some really good moments sprinkled throughout.
I have been waiting for you to react to this one because i just know you’re going to LOVE it
Yeah, the bad guy is Richard Dryfus from What About Bob but also Jaws, the one that went into the cage.
Hi, Cassie.
I'm glad Ben is doing better now.🙂
Also, congrats on you and Carly going to the Mission: Impossible movie premiere in the Big Apple 🗽🎉😁.
My gosh, seeing you and her in those awesome dresses and meeting Tom Cruise gave me an absolute smile on my face.
What an experience you two are going to relay to your loved ones for years to come.
👏👏👏👏👏👏
The "Girl standing in front of the boy..." line is from Notting Hill. If you haven't seen it you should react to it. It's another romcom from the 90s with Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant.
If you're watching President movies try Dave with Kevin Kline and Sigourney Weaver.
When I first moved to the northwest I went to a party on the 4th of July and the deal was everybody had to bring something that was salmon inspired. I never realized all the dishes salmon salads suits it was insane and insanely good
This has been a favorite film of mine for a long time. I’m glad you enjoyed it
Okay, yes, Richard Dreyfuss played the bad guy, he was in What about Bob, he also played Hooper in Jaws.
A lot of these actors were also in West Wing.
A very charming flick, so well done. Dave is another gem in a similar arena
The quote you were looking for is: “I’m just a girl, standing in front of a guy, asking him to love her.” It’s from Notting Hill
@@Greybeardmedic Yeah, TWW was meant to be the Sam (Rob Lowe) and Josh (Bradley Whitford) show. But Sheen put an end to that idea.
So glad you chose this one. I knew you’d love this one.
My favorite line from this great movie: "How do you have patience for people who claim they love America but clearly can't stand Americans".
Ironically, the Sidney character burned an American flag as a youth.
@@wealthbuilding5638 Making it legal to use the flag for a protest is one of the things that is great about America.
Micheal has been acting for close to 6 decades.has a successful career as both an actor and producer/director and has played on screen with some of the biggest names in hollywood.
I’ve watched this movie about 1,000 times. Love it.
Virtually everyone has!
This was on cable like every other day there for a while. Almost as much as Shawshank.
