Looking forward to many more videos. You seem right intelligent and propper dedicated to thoroughness. Also, shoot from the hip. It will be enough. Sometimes. ;)
DAMN - could be the UA-cam compression.... But, these all sounded pretty similar!! Thanks for taking the time to put this together - my only wish is for an "s" here and there so I could get an idea of how they all handle sibilance ;) Off to part two to see what is what! But, I would be happy with any of these to be my 87 sound.
Thanks for checking it out! Part 2 has two additional songs with consonants and S’s so I think you’ll find what you’re looking for there! Also, links in the description of both videos to download full resolution files if you’d like to check those out!
A - jumped out as a contender for Warm 87 (brighter, less low mids). B - has softer top end, and might have the best low end? Something about it is really pleasing on the guitar. It almost compresses the low notes. (I wonder if it's louder than the other mics?) C - also sounds very good to me. probably the darkest mic. very soft D - in comparison to C, this mic has air. still has good bottom, but has lots of presence. E - kind of similar to A. less harsh but still bright. if i had to guess which one is the vintage 87 i'd go with C, as it's the darkest, but sometimes 87's are funky and it could be B. when i think of an 87 i always think of pushed mids and all these mics have a pretty forward sound, to me. i personally vibe with C and B the most though. hoping they're the cheapest ones ;)
Man, thanks for taking the time to offer up such detailed notes! It's very much appreciated. I, like you would be totally fine if once it's all said and done my favorites are the cheapest :)
Thanks for the shootout! I liked A and E the most for their top end. All the others were kinda similar except for D and it was darker and rounder than any of them. Can't wait for the reveal video :)
I'm glad you found the Wav files useful! I never quite know what UA-cam is going to do to the audio 😁. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment, it's much appreciated!
You're so welcome! I'm glad you found it useful. Part 2 will have 2 more songs with vocals and acoustic guitar so that should round things out even more. I'll also provide the files to download for that.
I'd have to go with A as it reminded me of the recording sound of Marc Daniel Nelson from Produce Like A Pro. He uses a TLM 103 but it had the same character to my ears. Very warm, silky, airy.
One is, one isn't. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by the price of one of your favorites here :) Be sure to check out part 2 for the reveal! ua-cam.com/video/qiyvOgkGIlM/v-deo.html
@@keithrobichaux I've been able to score a couple recently at $3,500 which is a steal at this point(one was modded though unbeknownst to the seller, so you have to watch out there). Having said that, I've moved on from them at this point, I'm comfortable with the clones(still deciding which to ultimately keep between them though). Most good condition U87s I'm seeing now on Reverb, etc.. are 4k and up.
This was a fun and informing listen. I found that A reminded most of what an 87 to tape feels and sounds like. I also really enjoyed D and E as well. They seemed to blend best next to A to my ears on a Dynaudio system I have had for years. In all fairness, I felt A, D, and E gelled musically in a more pleasing way than B and C. Those performances seemed tighter between the guitar and vocal in the way they meld together. Purely first listen subjective. I look forward to the follow up next. Thank you!
No idea which one is the vintage U87. I was listening specifically for vocals because I am in the hunt for a great vocal mic and my voice is luckily in a similar range to what you sound like Josh. Here are the notes I jotted down on each one. A) felt flat and dull B) nice full sound C) sounds great, shines on the low end D) Dull - it felt very mid-heavy E) This one sounded the best to me. crisp sound, high and lows both had a really natural presence. If I had to guess, this would be the U87.
I'm so glad you took the time to watch the blind shootout first! Only about 25% of the people that have watched part 2, watched part 1 first, but I think it's wise to do so to keep out any confirmation bias. Thank you for taking the time to post your thoughts as well.
@@SeawellStudios Part 2 came up in my search but I jumped to this one right when you said you had a part 1 blind video. Super glad I did because I'm totally guilty of "it says Neumann so now I think it sounds better" bias.
Which mic do you think is the Vintage Neumann?
I would go with "A" being the vintage Neumann, but I liked the "E" better.
@@MJ-ip2gu thank you for sharing your thoughts! Be sure to check out part 2 for the reveal: ua-cam.com/video/qiyvOgkGIlM/v-deo.html
I’m not sure which is the real deal. A and D worked the best on the material. B and E worked together he least.
I think that’s a Leonard Cohen song.
@@MidnightMiik Yes, Leonard Cohen originally wrote/performed it but this version is in the style of Jeff Buckley's cover of it.

I liked C an E

Thanks for doing the shootout! Only criticism here is the noisy guitar amp :P Subscribing!
All the best ones are noisy 😜. Thanks for checking out the video and for the sub! It's very much appreciated!

for me its in the bottom end, C sounds like the real deal. The wave files were a bonus, plus I have a Mid 70's U87 P48.

@@SeawellStudios Great, thank you!!
Thanks ❤ whats the best preamp for a U87ai ? Cheers
I've always enjoyed matching a U87ai with a good tube preamp.
