Retro Instruments Powerstrip | Review
From www.retroinstruments.com: Retro Instruments Powerstrip is a high powered “channel strip” or “vintage studio in a box”, capturing the tone of a tube mixing desk, Pultec-style tube EQ and British tube compressor all in one compact 2u rack unit. It has all the right inputs and enough gain for every microphone and instrument you can throw at it. It has a balanced line level input for pro-interface instruments and for use during mix time. The performance is purely musical. It is perfect for use in any size recording studio or on stage.

Manley VOXBOX Hardware vs Universal Audio UAD Plugin Shootout
Thank you for this review. I have two of them and can’t be happier! They make magic just passing signal through. Buttery lushness putting the whole mix through! Low end 3d you cannot achieve easily, is a breeze. There’s really something to be said about the love that goes into this compressor and the love that comes out. Rich L. Ladomus Studio
As a music enthousiast (I dont consider myself an audiophile but by most standards I probably am) I can say pretty confidently that I wont be listening to Atmos at home in the foreseeable future. My speakers are high quality. Two of them cost quite a bit already. No way can I justify buying 10+ high-end speakers for having some surround effects in music. For a movie fanatic maybe its worth it, for a music lover I really doubt it. A soundbar with fake 3D is definitely not going to make music sound better than 2 good speakers would.
My audio suite is not working smh ! I blacking what I want but nothin happens
Make sure "use in playlist" is selected at the top of the audiosuite plug-in window. When it's active, it should be highlighted blue. If that ever isn't on, when you click on "render'" it won't do anything. I hope that fixes it for you!
@ I got it 💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯
@ and thank you
@@TherealSEPT6IX you're welcome! So glad it worked for you.
@ ayeeeee 💯👍🥂
great tip straight to the point ty
I'm so glad it was helpful! Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment.
I've been looking through the comments, which has inspired me to say "DO A BLIND TEST!" when listening back to this video. Have a buddy blind test you on good headphones/speakers. I say this because there was a time when I thought I fell in love with Atomic Clock by Antelope. One of the best clocks out at the time, I was completely convinced it was making my mixes sound so much better. I decided to do a blind test for the hell of it, and overall I failed the blind test. I was completely shocked - it's amazing the tricks your mind will play on you. Needless to say, I sold the clock.
Great point! I like to use the HOFA Blind Test plug-in, and push the up and down keys on the keyboard to the point where I don't know which is which and listen with my eyes closed 👍🏼
Thank you so much for doing this! I really mean that. I have both the hardware and software and have done my own shootouts. The level of consideration you took made all the difference. I've always questioned my shootouts for one reason or another.
I'm so glad you enjoyed it! Thank you so much for taking the time to watch and comment, it means a lot.
Like I thought you was trying to actually trying to help
I'm confused...what is this in reference to?
Guess al go to gearspace
?
You probably won't see this comment a year later but anyway. Many years ago I was at the theater to see Jurassic Park in DTS. All was well until the first t-rex scene with the rain pouring down all around. Suddenly, something "broke" and all the speakers except the front right channel went dead. The totally immersive rain soundscape collapsed into a mono sound from the side. NOBODY in the theater seemed to even notice. I looked around in disbelief thinking someone else would notice. Nothing. I left the theater trying to find someone to fix it but this was in the days when Cineplex had taken over the business and there was nobody around who could do anything or had any clue. I went back hoping it was fixed but it was still granddad's mono so I left and asked for a refund. Most people can't hear any difference or don't care. Atmos is just the latest attempt to reinvigorate the theater/hardware business.
WOW 🤣. It’s wild isn’t it?
What is the difference between the tube and the FAT version of this mic?
i was considering to buy serrano vintage 87 or BU87i (orC version) but now im stuck with thinkig about this one for OVERHEADS or ROOOM Mics, what do you think is better for this?
I have not used the FET version yet but here is a link to hear some examples of both that I hope will be helpful: realgearonline.com/thread/16258/beesneez-bc12a-tube-fet-shootout
If I had to choose one out of that group, it would be the BC12a Tube. The tonal versatility of the 9 different pick up patterns makes it worth on anything!
@@SeawellStudios uff tube version is over my budget for now. I think i will get two BU87i matched and maybe sometimes later just get one BC12a..
Besides the drums, I dig the Flea. It is really very musical. Tough choice as the Stam is amazing too. Thank you for the demo. Cheers!
I'm so glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for taking the time to watch and share your thoughts, it's much appreciated.
So good. Massively emotional compressor/unit--the way it pushes the vocal is insane. Saturation is incredible throughout all 3 modes with all the good dial-ing
Yeah the limiter mode on vocals is truly something special! Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment, it's very much appreciated!
Dude thank you! I didn't know about the shift button disabled the plugins, but figured there must be a way. Thanks man!
You're so welcome! I'm glad it was helpful.
I don't believe ATMOS will last. If it was indeed the gamechanger it was made out to be 2 years we'd be feeling it in a serious way by now. We're not. In the grand scheme of things, it's a niche. If someone wants to go down that route, fine by me, but the barrier of entry for this stuff is - as you say - just too high and the return on the investment too small, both for studios and the consumer of the music - the latter being the ones who ultimately decides what sticks and what doesn't, for better or for worse.
Btw, if talking about the UAD bass boost, it cannot handle bumps in the infra range (like in original 909 kicks or d16 Drumazon 2). Or if the input signal has a DC Offset. It will have a huge audible aliasing noise, if you put a compressor afterwards (and push it very hard). UAD has confirmed it, but not going to fix it. Just said that I need to put an EQ before their Pultec. So UAD is not good at all.
You should Check out the Chandler Cassette Channel Strip. It smokes on every Track. The Eq is awesome and the Compressor 😅 that Channel does everything i need. I absolutely Share your thoughts on the Retro.
I definitely will at some point! So far I've spent time with an Avalon 737, Manley Voxbox and the Powerstrip. I didn't really care for the 500 series Chandler Opto so that's really the only thing that's held me off from trying the cassette up to this point. Now...if they put their RS124 in a channelstrip 🔥🔥🔥
@@SeawellStudios the compressor in the cassette is awesome good :D It is two comps in one. Round ist a sort of LA3A maybe - good for Bass and Vocals. The Sharp Knee is super nice on drums! I've never had any better comp than this one and I guess that the 500 series is not the same unit as in the expensive cassette strip... And the EQ ist so good: Highs and Lows are only fixed but it'S like magic: They always fit on every track! Best unit I've ever bought in my life.
Great to know! Thanks so much for the info!
I have a friend that swears by his Sta-Level. I wish I knew where he got those acoustic panels! Very cool!
I love the Sta level as well! If you're asking about my acoustic panels, they are from GIK Acoustics 👍🏼
@@SeawellStudios Thank you! Keep up the good videos.
Nice review, thinking if this or a hazelrigg VLC
Thanks! I haven't had a chance to use any Hazelrigg gear but have heard good things.
Another good review. Thanks
Thank you Keith! I appreciate the continued support.
Digital can't bounce the way analogue bounces...and music sounds best with reflex and nuance....not computer code.
Great video. Now the big question. How does this version of the RS124 compares to the Chandler?
Thanks, I'm so glad you enjoyed the review! The Retro(powerstrip & revolver), the Chandler RS124 and the Highland Dynamics(BG1) all are great but are all different enough to where I don't think if you're happy with one, you could just switch to one of the others and not notice a difference. The Chandler is the thickest of the bunch to me, which is a good thing for how I normally like to use it(Vocals & Bass). In the finished version of "The Wanderer" which is the song used in this video, I did the processing shown in the video with the powerstrip and then followed it up with more aggressive compression with the Chandler RS124. The Revolver and BG1 are both a huge value considering they are two channels. I like the Revolver in particular because it(like the powerstrip) can be faster than what I can get out of the Chandler or BG1. For me, the RS124 style compression and box tone is my favorite of all so I'd love to have multiple channels and different manufacturer's takes on it all at the same time eventually. So, if you're starting with a RS124 sytle comp, I'd get the Chandler first just because it's THAT tone that we all love so much and what it can do on a vocal & bass in particular is just unmatched. Superfuse mode is also something that you'll definitely miss in other RS124 clones once you're used to using it. If you already have a Chandler, I'd take a strong look at the Revolver just to have something in that same tone family but that will come in handy for times where the Chandler may not quite have the speed you're looking for. I hope that helps!
@ Thanks for the insight.
Really cool comparison. I'm trying to decide between these two; Essentially, it's for an "everything and anything" channel going into a TG1. Could be vocals, could be acoustic guitar, could be a bass cab, could be shakers, whatever. Electric guitar cabs and drums are all setup going in other channels, so those are unlikely to end up going that way. Any thoughts?
Thanks, I'm so glad you enjoyed the video! I ended up keeping the RS124. I'd love to have the RS660 again at some point but didn't feel it was as versatile as the RS124. For instance, there are some vocals I tried it on that were a bit mid forward(2kish range) that just didn't seem to vibe with the RS660 at all. When it did work on a vocal though(particularly limiter mode) it was something I hadn't heard out of any other unit, it just jumped out of the speakers in the most awesome way! For overall versatility and something that just makes everything sound better, I'd go with the RS124. I hope that helps!
@@SeawellStudios Exactly the sort of answer I was looking for. Thanks for taking the time. Also, I pulled the trigger on the Audioscape Opto based on your review in particular. Thanks for all the cool content. Keep doing what you're doing - it's much appreciated! Best regards from Denmark.
Didn't work for me. My playback keeps stopping after 20 seconds. Can't find a fix.
Are you getting any kind of error message when your playback stops?
@@SeawellStudiosplease delete my comment. I did not have your specific issue and I should have clarified it. Mine just keeps stopping. I had a session with 100 tracks and a ton of plugins. It worked perfect for years. I made inactive 25 tracks and deleted 40 plugins and still the same result. I even cranked up my sampke rate to 2048 in playback engine.
Thank you btw!
Have you just ran stuff through the boxes with minimal, or no compression? Like what I'm wondering is how does the overall box tone, and gain structure/saturation compare when pushed harder?
So both boxes have a good bit of box tone with minimal compression. I'm fine with that because when I'm reaching for hardware, I want to have something fairly significant. If I want something cleaner, I can just use a good plug-in. Both are quite versatile with the compression and limiting modes of the RS660 and the standard/superfuse mode of the RS124. The RS124 in particular has this interesting effect that even when compressing 10-15 dB, it can still sound quite transparent but in the most beautiful way. The RS124 has my favorite box tone out of any compressor. One of my favorite uses of the RS124 is to just tickle the meter a bit on acoustic guitar or vocals in particular. So yes, even at very low levels of compression you can get something quite compelling out of these units(the RS124 in particular). I hope that helps answer your question!
Excited to see you back!! I live for these videos man 😤🔥
Ah...you made my day!!!
Brilliant stuff love how this unit sounds I have a question why is that this snare sometimes goes a tone lower I think that’s quite interesting I have never never heard that before I mean is like pitched down a bit and it sounds cool did you perhaps record the fils with the snare tuned lower cool stuff
Thanks so much! The change in snare tone at times is probably just places where the drums were comped with a different take if I had to guess. It is kind of cool how it worked out that way.
@@SeawellStudios yeah it definitely sounds cool
Good ears! That’s exactly what’s happening here. I preferred the choruses from the first round of drum takes and most of everything else was from from the second round. Different takes from different days and I believe the snare was intentionally tuned differently to match the song from the second round.
Awesome Thx for the info
Love the plugin. Will seriously consider their 2a3 or Powerstrip in the future! The Subsonic Filter is a key feature, indeed!
Indeed! Which plug-in are you using? Acustica Smoke?
@@SeawellStudios yep...Smoke.
Cool, yeah the EQ is great! Can't say the same for the compressor unfortunately haha. I think Tim Petherick's Vari Level is a much better Sta Level plug-in.
The 2A3 is sublime! I’ve used it to mix acoustic and vocals and have needed nothing else.
Yeeeees! Woo hoo. I'm very keen on this sweet beast, and your just the fellow to do it justice. 🎉
Thank you so much, I hope you enjoy it!
Always helpful when the material playing on these demos is actually good. Really enjoyed that bass section especially. Come for the gear, stay for the music. And yeah, vari-MUs are kind of the business.
I appreciate your kind words about the material! The Sta Level is particularly great on bass. Bass and vocals it just seems to be made for.
Thanks. Have you compared it to your U47? I was on the Stam site wondering about the u47mk3
You're welcome! Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment. I unfortunately did not have the Stam SA-47 and SA-87T at the same time. I hope the demo I did of each can offer some insight though!
Mixing with these ? You need to change base EQ on these on your pc or daw. Low's are way to underrepresented. Listening on any other platform or speakers will blow them out if you just mix with these. I have those too and I would say for listening yes, for mixing def no.
Like any pair of headphones or even studio monitors, you need to spend time with them to learn how to work on them. If you do that, you won't have low end translation problems. Having said that, I don't enjoy or recommend mixing 100% on headphones(even with something like Slate VSX) unless you're in a situation where you absolutely have to. Finishing up on monitors is always my preferred method. It's just nice having something like the Focals to get started when you're traveling, etc..
@@SeawellStudiosyes 100 percent. It's a good pair of headphones but only for casual use. Casual music making. Within this price point I would never ever recommend these over mx50.
They are both professional tools, just different flavors. I don’t much care for the MX50. Anyway, use what you like 👍🏻. There are plenty of happy Focal users.
Curious whether you prefer the tone rs124 or the bg1?
RS124. It’s thicker to me which is what I’m looking for in hardware. BG1 is awesome but is a little cleaner and more hifi than the RS124 to my ears. Also, superfuse mode is something none of the other RS124 clones have implemented so that also sets the RS124 apart to me.
@ ok thanks! Haven’t had the opportunity to demo the bg1 so that helps me make a decision:)
can't say enough thankyous!
I’m so glad the video was helpful! Thanks for letting me know.
Thanks
Thanks. You are saving me a bunch! Feels that atmos is for rich single people with their own atmos room.
Thanks man, found this after asking for a tour on your other video!
Thank you so much, that's very kind of you! I plan to do a more formal studio tour video at some point so just let me know if there's anything else you'd like to see covered in that.
Hi mate! Great videos as always! Would love to see a studio tour, it looks like you might be using Radar now?
Just got an B87i and did a comparison against U87ai. Sound is close a little thinner on the B87i. What bothers me is that circuit amplification is lower compared to U87. The difference is about 12db gain...
To be fair though the AI is going to have that same volume difference against a vintage Neumann U87i. The U87ai is a hot mic!
damn...mine is greyed out and i don't have acmes to my ilk key, my entire waves collection on their, nice video though, subscribed
Man, sorry to hear that! I'd reach out to iLok support and see if they can do anything further to help sort it out. I hope so! Thanks so much for the sub!
what mic did you use for this videos audio?
tulamics.com/products/the-tula-mic-red
Aside from the awesome gear review, I think this is one of the best songs you've demonstrated on the channel. The chord changes aren't what you usually hear! Only rivalled by your hoodie transition game, of course. :)
LOL! These videos usually take me multiple days to complete so I have to go deep into the hoodie locker 🤣. I'm so glad you enjoyed the review! I truly appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment.
Headphones and surround sound don't match. Whatever anyone might believe, any form of surround or 3D sound with headphones is just a gimmick.
both were great althought i preferred the RS660 on drums and guitar but the RS124 on guitar and vocals
Vari-mu compression is so good on vocals - always controlled but never pancaked. The only solid-state compressor that seems to be able to get that kind of action is the Distressor, and that's saying a lot!
That's a great description of vari mu on vocals! It's just the best!
Hey Seawells Studio just checking on you to see how you are doing i just saw that you had spinal surgery
Hey man thanks for checking on me, that means a lot! I truly appreciate everyone that has watched my past videos and chatted with me while I haven't been able to do much on here over the past year. The support and interaction with everyone has meant so much to me. Thank you 👊🏼
You are a hero!! Thank you!
I’m so glad the video was helpful for you!
Do you think this catch peaks fast enough for rap vocals?
In limiter mode I think it would be.
Do you happen to ever do Q&A/consultation sessions? You’re super rad about answering questions in the comments but I’d love to pick your brain a bit and don’t want to unfairly take too much of your time.
I've never done anything like that. I'm flattered you'd ask! Maybe a live Q&A on the channel would be good sometime soon?
@ totally yeah! Keep us posted about that please.
I think i might try this on my rap vocals mines kinda old school
