    What we know as the Half-Life 2 beta, is almost 20 years old. At this point, Valve should allow the community to use these assets legitimately. _Especially_ unused models and textures from around 2003, close to retail. A *LOT* of those assets could be really useful for modders. These assets have been on the internet for two decades at this point, and it's quite easy to get your hands on the leak. Let people repurpose these assets with lost potential legitimately.

    What makes me most sad is all of the old music of Left 4 Dead 1 not being accessible. The old style of the music was really cool, and I had actually emailed with Mike Morasky for a while about it. He told me he made tons of different iterations and completely scrapped tracks and I'd love to hear them. I asked him about possibility of posting or sharing some of those old tracks and he told me he just really didn't have the time to go digging for them as apparently the files of old L4D builds are sort of a mess. I tried for a while to convince him to at least look a little, but any hope of him ever posting stuff was basically destroyed when the whole Hunt Down the Freeman thing happened as he stopped replying to emails after that.

    What I find most interesting is that they had the money to spend on development that just ended up getting canceled and then they moved on. How many other companies can work on that many projects just to cancel them and stay in business? Google, Microsoft, and maybe Apple? The larger game studios would certainly never do that.

    • @protocetid

      What all businesses hate is uncertainty, ironically that can increase with their wealth (as well as their stinginess). Corporations of that size tend to resemble each other and share some pretty lame traits. The giants you mentioned could definitely experiment a lot and make genuinely bold products that aren’t homogenized and iterative. They choose the safest options instead and cut down on innovation (costs money and is “risky”) and expenses when they have control of a market. They might do something new and interesting if they’re entering a new market. There have been rumors about Apple prototyping cars, VR and who knows what else for more than a decade. AFAIK Apple is very good at preventing leaks from happening so we don’t see what they’re playing with internally. The rest of the exceptions include the rare occasion there’s a new technology or change the bean counters can’t deny is the future or absolutely necessary. Shareholders are also perpetually screaming for higher earnings and will cry if corporations dare to make something that’s not super similar to what’s currently selling the most. Valve’s shareholders are inside the company so it gives them more freedom.

Remember Google Plus? Their foray into social media? Canceled after just a few years because hardly anyone really used it. As far as Apple is concerned, we can tell a lot about what they're experimenting with by the patents they've filed. VR and driverless cars are just two. Of those 3 companies, Microsoft is the only one that has really cut down on innovation, but that's just in this space. They're innovating, but more in the cloud computing space.

    I remember a long time ago on a Nintendo and Museum related article, ex-Nintendo devs have just said that they are embarrassed to release their cutting room floor content and that they'd be happy that it was not released, I imagine Valve, with it's constant X number of producers, is probably the same reason, people at the top don't want it released.

    I don't remember where exactly I heard it, but I remember hearing in an interview with Ken Levine (lead director and designer of Bioshock Infinite) that they had enough cut content to fill two whole games, completely separate from what was released. Now, take anything that you hear from Ken with a grain of salt, but it is no secret that Bioshock Infinite had a ton of cut content that was even visible as being fully playable in their early gameplay demos. If anything, I'd love to see any of that brought to the light of day.

    Valve is absolutely aware they did most of the heavy lifting in 2000's video gaming, I can't understand why they are so adamant about keeping so much impactful history behind closed doors, especially for games this old. • @TheMAZZTer
    @TheMAZZTer 2 роки тому +87

    IIRC Valve keeps a lot of this stuff under wraps since they may reuse concepts and/or content for future games which is a reasonable stance to take. That said the latter two items you mentioned (HL pre-reboot and HL2 prototype) would more closely match with the content 343 is releasing as stuff that can't really be recycled for future titles in the series.
    Halo also has the advantage of having Forge where it makes a lot of sense just to drop disconnected bits and pieces in to let players mess with it. Even then they have to invest work into getting these old assets feature complete and working on their newest MCC engine versions. Your examples for Valve don't really have these issues since they are standalone games though there could still be issues with running them on modern systems that could need to be addressed (and nobody ever really wants to do that work).
    All that said I agree would be really cool for Valve to emulate 343 more. Bit ironic considering all the flak 343 has been taking over how they have handled Infinite.

    • @5Hydroxytryptophan
      @5Hydroxytryptophan 2 роки тому +9

      You are right on that recycling stuff, but not so much on that nobody would want to do this work.
      They could easily hire people from the community or even just put some voluntarily under a NDA.
      The community is strong and there are skilled people, that would never miss out on such an opportunity.
      These are independent games, that is right. They could do a collection, just like Zachtronics have done with ZACH-LIKE.
      Not gonna happen, though.. Valve is special. They do not want you to know, what they could have released.
      It's ironical that it would hurt their reputation, just because some of this stuff would be too good.

    • @mrbackup993
      @mrbackup993 2 роки тому

      @@5Hydroxytryptophan Except that the work has to be paid, remaking such things doesn't help in any way shape or form and it's detrimental to them for the same recycling concepts argument. They have no real incentive to do so, just as much as they had no incentive to finish those projects for one reason or another.
      Not to mention that they legally have every right to bring down any fanmade project about leaked code or models and yet they don't, other communities would be ecstatic to hear that their favourite company keeps leaked stuff public without any consequences, or even better let's them use that leaked material for fangames.

    I think the reason why Valve isn't interested in releasing cut contents is to keep them as a reference for future projects, even though there is big chance that those projects wouldn't ship at all.
    You know like some F-Stop stuff that was repurposed for Aperture Desk Job.
    I think Valve internally has this "obsessed scientists" mentality where they want people to see them as innovators who make breakthroughs. Because over the years, they kinda are, with products like Half-Life, Steam, Portal, L4D, VR, etc.
    They don't want their stuff to be leaked because then everyone will take their "experiment" and make money off that by implement it to their game.

    Pre-reboot Quiver is not going to happen. They restart anew with a clean slate developing Half-Life. I don't think they have a proper source versioning control that kept that development branch. I don't think they have much source versioning control seeing how stuff leaks everywhere.
    TF2:BOA? yeah. L4D3? sure.
    Not mentioned here: Stars of Blood. And whatever Campo Santo was working on when they got hired by Valve. Valve snuffed that game from coming out.
    It somehow feels random what did got released from within the studio and what didn't. Like Deathmatch Classic and Ricochet came out, but TF2:BoA didn't. Alien Swarm did, but Stars of Blood didn't.
    There are also second party titles developed together with/by partnered studios.
    Gearbox's version of Condition Zero looked more polished than the retail one that we got. ESCalation recently released a video on that. A mother lode of CS cut content, that video was!
    Arcane had Episode 4 installed and fully playable on a PC in their office. Also that other title that inspired Dishonored.

    343i only understands that they can't make anything that the fans like. Like, there's a reason 343i are only doing this now with MCC, and it's for the same reason they did this same thing when they ditched Halo 5 in favor of going back and finally fixing MCC. 343i needs to rely on when Halo WAS good for any good moments, because they're incapable of making anything new to please the fans.
    It's still a cool thing for us to get, but just felt like I needed to mention this just so people remember/realize that there is a reason for this and isn't exactly just something out of the goodness of 343i's hearts.

    There are many different things to criticize Valve for, but I don't blame them for this at all. Nobody likes to share incomplete/broken work, especially if this work has been stolen or shared in an unauthorized capacity. So I completely understand them for being uncooperative with these people, especially when much of the leaked content may contain stuff that they might reconsider using in the future, including possible spoilers. Valve already shares more about the development process than most with their developer commentary tracks (not to mention when they work with Keighley in the Final Hours series), so I'm happy enough with that. Could they share more? Sure, but I don't resent them one bit.

    You talk about communities coming together to share cut content in a gameplay fluid way, and I have to make sure you saw it... Did you see TASBOT's run of The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina of Time beta exhibition, that was really a collection of content that is on the N64 cartridge but was cut, that is being reaccessed by TABOT editing the RAM on the fly, that was stitched together to tell an alternate story, doing wildly incredible things you would never expect on real N64 hardware? It's wild, and a perfect example of the community coming together in crazy ways to make amazing things.

    343 is authorizing the community to develop levels based on cut content that Bungee.. Well, cut. It's cool in a way but you're also forgetting that 343 in general has been trying its hardest to get in the good graces of the community after it has consistently fumbled Halo and driven away goodwill.

  • @XradicalD

    I wonder if it's an issue with Havoc or something else. Because it's a bit hard to see why Valve wouldn't just say "f-ck it, put these out." Of course, their assets their decisions but I feel it's also part of gaming history considering what most of these titles ended up doing for the industry as a whole.
    On Valve's end, I know the community cannot be trusted (as much as it pains me to say it), so why not gather the interns at Valve and pack the stuff up? Would certainly be better than just leave it to rot. And while at it, just pack a moddable version of TF2 for the Source tools, even if it's the original 2007 release. But maybe I'm just doing a backseat developer act, what do I know.

    cut/unreleased content is definitely interesting but online communities act very entitled over it. it's stuff that was never intended to be seen by the public. even if you have interest, please respect the wishes of the creators *not* to release this stuff and to keep it private. i would be just as excited to see some of this stuff get put out or shown off by valve, but it's not something they owe the community at all. i for one would not feel comfortable putting that stuff out into the world, letting people see the inner workings and half-finished sides of your content and creative process.

And imagine they included the hl3 and l4d3 prototypes, and said something like “the never before released and much anticipated Half-life 3 and Left 4 dead 3!” Along with other stuff like stars of blood and 2009 f-stop.
