There's also a bunch of cancelled games mentioned in the HL:Alyx The Final Hours such as A.R.T.I, SimTrek, RPG, L4D3, but I think the biggest disappointment is actually this since it's made by 3rd party development.
I think you should all watch a video called "Half-life finally got Meta" to understand Valve's perspective first, it might help you understand something
@@user-tzzglsstle585e38 I've understood their motive and how they work for years. They still made the wrong call canceling Episode 3, F-Stop and Ravenholm.
Valve (during their prime) and Arkane (still in their prime) are two of my favourite developers ever. Both have a penchant for super-polished, super tightly-designed games in unique settings that innovate greatly in their respective genres. So seeing this game's unfinished state and hearing of how it fell apart is such a huge lost opportunity. Could you IMAGINE if this game was a success and Arkane and Valve, with the former's experience with highly systemic gameplay and amazing level design and the latter's trademark polish and and humour? A shame they never worked together again.
Remember when we could of had a Team Fortresses 2 series on adult swim but valve didn't communicate with adult swim so it was scrapped? I think about it every day
Episodic games would've been disastrous for the industry if they became the norm. We would've been stuck with bad graphics on the same engine for years before a proper sequel, without real change, similar to Call of Duty.
@@Nikotheleepic But those are acrual different games. I'm talking about releasing a game in the same series over and over without improving the engine or graphics, gaming would have stagnated significantly. There's a big difference between Left 4 Dead 2 and Half Life 2, they are totally different games, they just share the same engine.
This looks like it would’ve been an awesome Half-Life game! Only gripe I have with it in terms of story is that I find it hard to imagine Father Grigori being ‘sane’ enough to perform these elaborate experiments, especially if this takes place after ‘We Don’t go to Ravenholn’. Asides from that, I would’ve loved to see this game get released!
Man I knew so little about this project and to see all the heart that went into it and to hear the story and see the gameplay... man what a trip, it would've been an AMAZING edition to the HL series if it was given the time to finish. It's so sad. Thanks for bringing this whole story to your channel it's the kind of stuff I love. I now have another piece of head canon to flesh out the half life lore! What really struck me was the punching mechanic and how the zombies reacted. It looks physics based, but they still seem to react against it in a way that looks very real. Like in one shot a zombie gets knocked back, and with ragdoll momentum spin around, then the zombie swings back at you wildly and seems to pull itself around with it's own physics based momentum. I've never seen anything that good. The closest I can think of is GTA4 but even their "living ragdoll" isn't nearly as good.
I know you worked hard on this one man so I just wanted say, great video! Appreciated how you looped some clips so I could fully take in what happened without going back myself.
I played the shit out of Opposing Force back in the day and it is still one of my favorite expansions of all time. Opposing force was a fresh take on the Black Mesa incident, but instead of all the science stuff you had more of a military vibe going on, with the arsenal and the "squad mechanics." You got to play as one of those bad ass HECU grunts after all. With that, I don't see why they had to bring in Adrian for this expansion. All the stuff they created for this expansion is phenomenal and it is a really big shame this expansion got cancelled. But I can't really see Adrian being this electricity bolt wielding zombie killer. I mean you could play as any regular civilian and the expansion story would not lose anything, you don't have any military grade grunt weapons, night vision goggles or anything. To be honest I can't really see a scenario in this current Half Life timeline where Adrian would fit as any other than a fan service. Opposing Force was cool because of the setting (playing as a military grunt instead of some scruffy scientist) and that setting is now gone. Maybe Valve has kept Adrian in limbo for this very reason, who knows.
Imagine fighting in Black Mesa then getting teleported somewhere by the mysterious G - Man and would've been fighting against Xen Creatures ( You would also just discover the combine and the Xen taking over. ) Also, It's really sad and disapointing seeing Valve cancel these Projects. They could've been a big hit on the company ngl.
Maybe because Gregori was an important person and he was also dying and turning, maybe Shepard was sent there to kill Gregori after Gregori has turned even though Shepard doesn't know what's going on with Gregori yet.
After thought: remember how Shepard, Freeman and Barney were almost always commiting genocide? Freeman and Xen Controller flying fetuses and the Combine, Shepard and Race X, so on, well maybe Shepard was also sent to clean up the failed experiments of Gregori too.
It's sad though because I really wanted to see what happened to Adrian Sheperd. Guess he'll have to continue vibing alone. *We'll see you soon Corporal Adrian Sheperd*
So instead of this the next time we get to see Adrian is when his dork of a non-canon brother Mitchell dies and is somehow transported to Adrian's stasis holding area.
I really hope the take this concept back again and make a game, Shepard is such a cool character, Maybe we will see a VR game with him? Unlikely but possible with Alyx out and everything
Honestly, the thing that I like the most about this is the way the maps look. They all look like something Valve made, it's so good. It's honestly pretty refreshing to see, after so many custom maps that don't look anywhere as detailed and interesting.
Much as I respect Valve's creative vision, and as much as I can forgive following the release of Half-Life: Alyx...fuck it. I say Valve OWES us this. And not just those of us in the community. They owe it to the developers. Damn right I want to see this get the release it deserves.
Indeed, but as a different game, because *this* Have nothing half life or opposing force related to it, there's a lot of why's and just weird setting design that have nothing to do with HL
@@Dr_Dan_ Well...of course. But I mean that's just because what we're looking at is essentially in-development assets and placeholders. All the meat, none of the potatoes. Oh and this is nothing compared to what I've learned since I saw this. They canceled an even better game than this back in the Half-Life ONE days. If you've never heard of a canceled Half-Life game called Hostile Takeover you should look it up. @JP For the most part, I agree. On the other hand, I have signed the petition for its release. Hope that it will show Valve and Arkane that there is a demand for it. I honestly believe that there are a lot of enthusiasts in both companies who too want to finish such an amazing project
The gameplay and ideas seem amazing! I don't like the idea of Father Grigori being the villain, intentionally or not. But him being the side kick is amazing, and I'm sure there is some joke they can make about Shephard's name and Grigori leading a flock.
The only problem I have with this that it doesnt really feel Half Life-like in regards to Lore. Fighting Headcrabless Zombies and not even Barnacles, normal headcrabs etc. Makes it pretty ambiguous IP-wise. Arcane Developers: *Make a wonderful game full of witty humor and that genuinely feels like half life*
Valve: Skidaddle Skidoodle, your game is now a noodle.
Some half-drunk guy stealing assets: *Makes a half-broken game that everyone hates*
Valve: **I'LL TAKE YOUR ENTIRE STOCK**
Wait what was the game
@@whscy hunt down the freeman
I love how the sponsers are in the Speculation catagory
This sounds like it would’ve been an awesome little short story within the HL universe and it would be nice to see Shepard return.
Besides F-Stop and Stars of Blood I think this is the 3rd biggest disappointment. Would've loved to play this.
first biggest disappointment is episode 3, then this, then Fstop and SoB in my opinion
You don't even really know what F-Stop or Stars of Blood really was. You just like the sound of it.
Someone needs to do a fan remake of Arkane's Eisode 4 (similarly to Black Mesa). That would be really good.
Remember when we could of had a Team Fortresses 2 series on adult swim but valve didn't communicate with adult swim so it was scrapped?
I think about it every day
You said it bro, that could've been a total disaster. Thank god they never produced that garbage man, shit would've been retarded.
Expiration date was going to be the pilot for the show though...
Insane to see THAT many assets sitting in a source 2 level at once tbh.
This is source one, source 2 is the one used in Alyx
Thank you for the report Tyler, keep it up man!
Wallpaper engine lookin ass pfp
@@Jaann1919 damn, that's kinda mean
It's cool to see a lot of Dishonored's art style in Ravenholm, especially the windmill generator things!
There was so much missed opportunity with this engine what a shame.
Episodic games would've been disastrous for the industry if they became the norm. We would've been stuck with bad graphics on the same engine for years before a proper sequel, without real change, similar to Call of Duty.
They're basically DLC, just Valve time'd
@@Appletank8 Kind of, but they were pushed out like they were brand new games which they weren't.
Source games are still played 14 years later so
It's not as if it matters
@@Nikotheleepic But those are acrual different games. I'm talking about releasing a game in the same series over and over without improving the engine or graphics, gaming would have stagnated significantly. There's a big difference between Left 4 Dead 2 and Half Life 2, they are totally different games, they just share the same engine.
Awesome video tyler!
Last time I was this early, Half Life 2: Episode 3 was still in development.
Who cares, that development it was cancelled anyways.
we don't need that, we have own community making own half life 3.
Episode 3 won't be out, there is no 3 if it is valve.
@@maisuradzedaniel1489 Perhaps it has another team working on.
Imagine fighting in Black Mesa then getting teleported somewhere by the mysterious G - Man and would've been fighting against Xen Creatures ( You would also just discover the combine and the Xen taking over. )
Also, It's really sad and disapointing seeing Valve cancel these Projects. They could've been a big hit on the company ngl.
This looks like it had amazing potential. Even moving the gameplay forward more than the HL1 expansions did back in the day.
Great journalism Tyler!
Back in the day when Gabe said that we'll see Shephard again, he was referring to this game
What about now? Is the HL team planning a return for Adrian? 😔
Man, I love the disintegration effect of the zombies. Definitely a carry over by Arkane Studios into Dishonored.
I like the zombie test monkeys
Time will come. Technology moves so quick these days. I believe we - fans of HL, will experience story's end.
why would the Gman send shepard to something this small-scale?
His contractors
Maybe because Gregori was an important person and he was also dying and turning, maybe Shepard was sent there to kill Gregori after Gregori has turned even though Shepard doesn't know what's going on with Gregori yet.
yes
After thought: remember how Shepard, Freeman and Barney were almost always commiting genocide? Freeman and Xen Controller flying fetuses and the Combine, Shepard and Race X, so on, well maybe Shepard was also sent to clean up the failed experiments of Gregori too.
needed some space in his fridge
Awesome video Tyler
Shame it never happened, some of these puzzle ideas looked incredible.
Imagine: the child of Half Life and Dark Messiah. What a future we've lost.
It's sad though because I really wanted to see what happened to Adrian Sheperd. Guess he'll have to continue vibing alone. *We'll see you soon Corporal Adrian Sheperd*
Maybe we could get an orange box-like compilation of these builds and unreleased projects
Fan favorite characters. Fan favorite setting. Damn it, Valve.
So instead of this the next time we get to see Adrian is when his dork of a non-canon brother Mitchell dies and is somehow transported to Adrian's stasis holding area.
These cancelled game reviews are pure gold. Great job, Tyler!
I really hope the take this concept back again and make a game, Shepard is such a cool character,
Maybe we will see a VR game with him? Unlikely but possible with Alyx out and everything
Apparently both Grigori and the vortigaunts love headcrab hearts? xD
It had a better plot than any of the other expansion packs and that INCLUDES Opposing Force, and I do NOT say that lightly.
@@ChrisMathers3501 yes of course it's unfinished, but if not to stop the car it'll Still move in the same direction, + it was developed in a crisis time and the industry were feeled with lots of zombie games. it's just have nothing to do with HL or OF at all, and can be released as something else
@@ChrisMathers3501 and hostile take over was probably cancelled cause of blue shift or other game, a third game could why too saturate the game, + probably HL2 at the time could be the reason to cancel it
Congrats on getting sponsored
This game is already ten times cooler and more thought out than I initially assumed. I want them to release it and possibly finish it (Is that even possible?) maybe Valve will let them if the community wants it.
Man, I've been wanting a follow up to Opposing Force forever.
I really hope valve comes back with this and make a "Half Life: Adrian"
As cool as that would be, OpFor isn't canon, so if anything we'll get Half Life: Barney.
@@VladiMatt OpFor isn't canon and It's canon at the same time actually. It all depends if the Half Life dev team decides to use Adrian in the future, and oh boy I'm pretty sure they will
Then the studio releases a completely unrelated project which follows the adventure of Annabelle Shelly who, following an incident at White Plateau, cooperates with Mother Gertrude to traverse an abandoned retirement home infested with aliens.
"Is it really that time again Mr Freeman"? So should we start a petition or bombard Arkane studios with simple requests to do something about this game? It looks magnificent, there must be way for us as a community to help the studio to release it, especially keeping in mind a fact that half life series had a second coming
They cant do anything, its valve property
Spam Valve, not these guys.
You guys have a valid point. Hope Valve will be generous enough to let Arkane or somebody talented to finish it
@JP For the most part, I agree. On the other hand, I have signed the petition for its release. Hope that it will show Valve and Arkane that there is a demand for it. I honestly believe that there are a lot of enthusiasts in both companies who too want to finish such an amazing project
Good job, Ty. Among your best videos. I'm a big fan of essay style videos, more than "report" style.
The background music from portal almost made me depressed
I was trying to find what it was from thank you
The gameplay and ideas seem amazing!
I don't like the idea of Father Grigori being the villain, intentionally or not. But him being the side kick is amazing, and I'm sure there is some joke they can make about Shephard's name and Grigori leading a flock.
tbh i couldn't kill grigori i liked his "crazy" persona too much
I could if he was randomly experimenting on hundreds of people
the real reason valve hasn't given us the half life cemetery is because it's more content than they've produced in the last 2 decades
WTF this game is soo innovational! Imagine if this came out as intended. It would be right next to half life 2 as a game ahead of its time.
The only problem I have with this that it doesnt really feel Half Life-like in regards to Lore. Fighting Headcrabless Zombies and not even Barnacles, normal headcrabs etc. Makes it pretty ambiguous IP-wise. The vibe this game has though, and the innovative Gameplay, really makes me wish this game had come out on its own merits.
18:14 imagine that in VR

Just wanted to say; really well made video Tyler! Extremely informative, and the video always corresponded with what you were talking about. Might be one of my favorite videos of yours to date. Keep em coming!
This is better explained than the noclip documentary but jesus slow down Tyler, I had to watch the video in 0.75.
I'm glad this didn't happen because this being the fate of Grigori would be too sad
Port it to Source 2, make higher quality models, textures and lighting. And release!
Come on Valve, 6-8 months work?
no!!!
Thats not how it works
Valve wanna keep Adrian Shephard in the Coma maybe longer as same as Duke Nukem was during his 20 years of sleep ...
They scrapped this for EPIC MICKEY? oh my god
Don’t diss Epic Mickey too bad. Look at its early concept art. It’s awesome.
I might have considered leaving this game for it if it had followed that original vision. Learning about all the scrapped concepts for Epic Mickey honestly hurts more than this video. Someone could write a book on it.
Impressive video Tyler! Love it when you take us behind the scenes of our favorite games.
