  • I have ridden this bike for a few hundred miles with this oil cooler setup. It works okay for temporary use but not for off-road at the moment because the suspension bottoms out from the bracket mounting location.
As many problems as this oil cooler solves, it also can create. With added components comes added risk. The configuration seen is not the ideal install; in fact, it’s far from ideal. The oil cooler should hand from the top. I must measure & fix the bracket soon or else…
I am thinking hard about the brakes & I’m working on a solution for that. I want the controls for that to be on the handlebars. I’m also thinking about maybe switching sides for the brakes to be configured more like a bicycle. We’ll see about all that.
Sprocket ratio 44/17 is very nice. I removed a cover piece so I can change sprockets with greater ease. Maybe on the next tire change I can try to run that 56 tooth sprocket with an even larger front sprocket. We’ll see if it fits when it’s time.
The crash guard may have to be changed soon. I might just do that instead of throwing more money at this bike. There’s always a solution but in this case, there are actually many solutions so surely one of them will be satisfactory for me.
The engine temperatures sometimes used to reach above 180°C (Opmid) while climbing a mountain. Typical operating temperatures when operating 30 minutes on rolling hills were above 140°C before the oil cooler.
After the oil cooler, typical operating temperatures when operating 30 minutes on rolling hills were anywhere from 120°C to about 145°C. Part of me suspects that an even larger oil cooler might not be a bad idea but the question remains: where does one mount it & how big?
Engine temperature management is something I will talk about when I make the video on the limitations of this machine. I have a love-hate relationships with air cooling (or dare I say, mother nature)
I’m learning as I build this machine to suit my own desires.
