Anyone know why she was not in the music video? She was a real cutie, definitely not someone you'd want to hide. Was she already in trouble with the music industry?
Flashdance was the female counterpart to Rocky, showing that with hard work and passion you can reach the goal you want to reach. I can't believe you've never heard the song before as it is iconic.
I never thought of it that way, but you are absolutely right. Not only the story but the actual movie that was never intended to be such a hit & Jeniffer Beals who would be a star forever because of this one movie.
Irene Cara sang the theme songs from two pivotal 80's movie that were about theatre & dance. ..this one and "Fame" for the movie of the same name. Both movies started major fashion trends as people started wearing the eclectic styles that theatre & dance kids wore. "Flashdance" was a very inspiring movie about a working class girl who dreams of being a dancer. It was Jennifer Beals' breakout role. Another great song you should check out from the movie is "Maniac" by Michael Sembello.
I love the soundtrack since I picked the tape in my parents collection back in the 80s, have it on CD now, but ironically I never watched the movie :-)
Irene Cara was screwed over by the record company on this song. It spent 6 weeks as the number one song in America and topped the charts around the world. They paid her $183 in royalties that first year and only then she collected about $62,000 by the end of 1984. The record executive from her company went on a smear campaign and virtually ended her singing career in the 1980s. Finally a judge in the 90s awarded her 1.5 million after determining her career had been damaged by this man and she was the victim of misallocated funds
Jesus what the hell is wrong with people. It’s her song and she should have benifited the most from it not the God damned record company. I mean she won a Grammy with this song.

For me the judge should have given her more money like 10 million. Those record executives are evil as they come. By the way Cynthia Rhodes is the dancer in the movie Flash Dance. The movie and the song was a real big deal in the early 80's.

This is another movie you need to add to your movie list! This and Michael Sembello's "Maniac" were all over radio when this film was in theaters (and long after)! As for Irene, she broke out in 1980 with the title song from the hit movie (and later TV series) "Fame", which is a banger. She also had hits with "Out Here On My Own", "Why Me?" and "Breakdance". Though she faded from the spotlight after the 80s, she still in the business, performing with the band she formed in 1999, Hot Caramel. The woman in the video, the star of the film, is Jennifer Beals. A terrific actress and a phenomenal dancer.
You have to love the 80's. This was one of the biggest songs of the decade. I was 12 in 1983 and remember this song pumping out on the radio during the summer of '83. The whole Flashdance Soundtrack is a winner. That's one thing I miss these days is huge soundtrack albums that spawn many hits on the radio; the 80's had so many. Great song, video, and movie! Jennifer Beals and Olivia Newton John were partly responsible for the leg warmer trend in the 80s. Olivia's "Let's Get Physical" would be a great one to follow this reaction.
Agree 100%. That scene is imprinted in my mind ever since i saw the movie in the 80's, i was probably 8 or 9. Many have covered it, but NO ONE can do it like Irene. To me still the best moment on the movie.
I must admit listening to this song and watching the video almost made me cry. So many parts of my young childhood Miss Irena Cara's voice was apart of. So many times she made me dance and smile when things weren't going all that great for me. RIH Miss Irena Cara rest in Peace knowing that you did what you were put on this Earth to do.
Irene Cara has such an amazing voice, great actress, and song writer who won awards...so talented, you should listen to her song "Fame". I also loved this movie Flashdance, so emotional as I wanted to be Jennifer Beals in the movie. I was so young when this came out and dreamed I could dance like her, this movie was one of the greatest hits of the 80's. What a great era to grow up in, we had other great dance movies like "Footloose" and "Dirty Dancing" w great songs connect to all these movies. So many in the comments mentioned them all!!! 💜💜💜💜
The three most famous dance movies of the 80s are Flashdance, Footloose, & Dirty Dancing. Now you guys have to react to "Footloose" by Kenny Loggins and "I've Had the Time of My Life" by Bill Medley & Jennifer Warnes.
I would recommend listening to Michael Sembello's Maniac from Flashdance as well. I recall seeing the movie in the theater when it was released. It had a great affect on fashion of that era of the 80s. The movie stars Chicago's own, Jennifer Beals. Irene Cara does have a great voice. Her Fame should be next.
You guys MUST watch the movie scene at the end of This movie. Her final performance was to this song and she absolutely KILLED it. Yes, this song is great, but her performance made this song even greater!
MG interesting comment but are you talking about Irene Cara or Jennifer Beals.Jennifer did some of the dancing ,but a lot of it was performed by another girl when it was supposed to be being performed by the Jennifer Beal's character.

Great song, video, and movie! Jennifer Beals and Olivia Newton John were partly responsible for the leg warmer trend in the 80s. Olivia's "Let's Get Physical" would be a great one to follow this reaction.
They reviewed that one a while back.

@@MChantal76 oh wow! It’s hard to keep up with these two!
Such a classic by Irene Cara still listen to this great tune. It was in game the television song.
Her voice is beyond good
Another amazing Irene Cara song is "Out Here On My Own" from the movie Fame. A must hear!!! It's amazing. Both movies are fantastic!!
I second this!
Agree 100%. That scene is imprinted in my mind ever since i saw the movie in the 80's, i was probably 8 or 9. Many have covered it, but NO ONE can do it like Irene. To me still the best moment on the movie.
The whole Soundtrak is amazing. The song "Manhunt", is wow....
We will have to check it out
Agreed! Both Flashdance and Fame soundtracks are amazing. A must have.
There is SO much more to the movie than what you get from this video, and it is timeless, you have to see it.
Rip. Irene ,Thank you for this great song
Always been and still is an epic song that never ages timeless classic
Irene Cara is one of the greatest female singers of ALL time
*Met Irene Cara in Singapore when she did a performance. Got an autograph on a souvenir poster of her. Still got it. She was so sweet.*
This song really sums up the overall feeling of hope and possibility of the 80's
True, this was definitely the most optimistic song of 1983.
Timeless song, from a brilliantly beautiful singer. In a thousand years from now people will still rock to this song. Brilliance!!
Leg Warming, and Heartwarming. Thank You, for this reaction.
The songs from the 80's and 90's were truly the best.
This was a huge hit in the 80's and keep in mind Irene Cara was the singer(not in the movie) and Jennifer Beals was the actress/dancer.
Also remember Jennifer Beals had a body double dancer for all the dance scenes.
@@kimyanchus582 Correct. Except, of course, for the close-ups.
I love the fact Irene co wrote this song so talented💯
This is an awesome movie, and very 80s. All the music on this soundtrack is phenominal.
The BEST song and dance are all in the 80s it sad that it's only a memory now. Glad your checking it.
Check out the scene from the movie Fame singing the song “Out Here On My Own”. Powerful, moving song with just her singing while playing the piano!
Irene Cara has sung hits for numerous movies
Flash dance
Fame
D.C Cab
Sparkle
@@erikagholston6610 Her best!
This is one of the best “energy build-up” songs out there. One of her other big songs, “Fame” (from the movie by the same name) has the same energy.
RIP. Take your passion and make it happen. Pictures come alive you can dance right through your life.
❤️Makes me want to go watch the movie again.
Irene Cara was the bomb back in the 80's. What a feeling and Fame are her huge hits. She was in the children show Electric Compan. She also made a cameo in the movie DC Cab. The 80's was such a fun time. Oh i have suggestion for another 80's artist for your female fridays...... Sheena Easton.
She was our girl back in the 80's!
I had the Flashdance and Sheena Easton albums.
