When this was a huge hit in the 1980's, Kim Carnes was on a talk show and the host asked her if she has heard from Bette Davis herself. Kim answered that Miss Davis had indeed written to her, thanking her because "now my grandchildren think I'm cool." 😎
I remember seeing that and yes. It brought a new generation awareness of who Bette Davis was and some of her movies.

Bette Davis was one of the best actresses to ever grace the silver screen. Others have commented that she had big eyes or big beautiful eyes, however, even though that is true, Bette used her eyes to communicate in a way that I have never seen anyone else do. The way she used her eyes enhanced her acting and spoke louder than anything else she was trying to convey. This is the reason this song was inspired.........like I said, no one has ever 'acted' with her eyes the way Bette did to my knowledge. Her movies are worth checking out......'Jezebel,' 'Dark Victory,' 'Now, Voyager,' 'All About Eve,' and one of my favorites cuz she portrayed a woman with a personality disorder that little was known about at that time which I swear is now known as Bipolar disorder....the movie is called 'Of Human Bondage.'

I think I heard "All About Eve" was Marilyn Monroe's first major role in 1950 too. The most famous line from that movie by Bette Davis was "Fasten your seat belts. It's going to be a bumpy night." Very talented actress who was able to continued acting despite getting older.
Bette Davis was still alive when this song came out and loved it. She sent thank you notes to Kim Karnes and to the writer of the song. She also talked about the song on interviews. Said she was particularly happy because now young people would know she had been a big deal.
Kim took Bette one of her ceremonial framed gold records and she said Bette got a nail and hammer right then and there and put it up on her living room wall.

Bette Davis was one of the most legendary actresses in Hollywood, and one of my personal heroes because she never used her sexuality to get ahead. Her fights with Jack L. Warner for more better, more serious roles were legendary. She was tough all the while remaining a lady. I strive to be a woman just like her.
Bette Davis started her film career in the 1930's and was known as The Eyes. Her eyes were considered hypnotic and captivating. She became a massive superstar and was known world wide. She continued to make movies into the 70's and 80's.
Never understood the eyes thing. They stand out but not in a good way. Like Stephen Merchant, she had to have had some sort of stigmatism to have those weird bug eyes.

She didn't have the bulging eyes until much later in her life. Though she was never diagnosed a lot of eye specialists are fairly certain she must have developed a mild case of Graves disease at some point.
@@Rowgue51 they bulged more in her old age but they had some degree of bulge to them even in her early career. I feel like as she got older and her face got thinner and looser the eyes were more pronounced but you look at very youthful pictures and the eyes are just weird.

That's what I can't understand! HOW could they NOT know who BETTE DAVIS was? I wonder if they may have seen her in a movie, but didn't know who she was. My gosh, BETTE DAVIS made around 100 movies in her career starting in 1932 when she was 24 years old. Maybe these kids never watch old movies, but she was still making movies into the late 1980s, her last film was "THE WHALES OF AUGUST" in 1987 along with the famous LILLIAN GISH who began her acting career during the Silent Movies era of the early '20s.
Many famous stars are now unknown. The younger generation is missing out on a lot, in movies and music, and don’t even realize it.

One of my favorite 80's song. The song was written by Donna Weiss and Jackie DeShannon in 1974. But made popular by Kim Carnes in 1981. The song gives a shoutout to the iconic actress Bette Davis who passed away in 1989. According to Kim Carnes, the woman being referenced in the song has this attribute similar to the actress. Despite her luring looks, the song basically warns the listener to be wary of such a female.

You guys should check out Norah Jones, She has a wonderful soulful voice. Not an artist that comes up in conversation very often, but well worth the listen. "Don't Know Why" and "Come Away With Me" are two of her most popular songs, although she has many good ones to choose from. She also play piano on most of her songs.

It was one of our fav's in the 80s. It is considered in the genre of 'New Romantic'. In the 80s, 1950's stars and movies were very popular and influencial on the way we dressed and our pop culture in general (England and Aus). Bette Davis was one of the greats. Feminine and powerful. She was a DIVA, none of what us young girls were, so we looked up to Bette as a Sassy role model.

I loved the song when i was a kid. This was around 81/82, so i was around 8 or 9. Listened to this on the radio all the time. Sadly it just got a bit forgoten over time, and i really didn't remembered the name of the song or the artist back then. English is not my native language.
A few years ago, while building my 80's hits collection, and going through tons of old 80's top20 charts, i kept seing this at nº1 in 1981, both in Europe and the US, and thought to myself:"i must know this"...
Just went on YT and the moment i hit play and that gorgeous synth line kicked in, it was instant 1981 almost in an eerie way, just a microsecond snapshot of my 8yo self, at my grandma's, this coming on the little transistor radio my grandma had at the top of the refrigerator, and i could "see" everything to the most infinite detail on that "snapshot", my grandma cooking, i was playing on the flior with my toy car, and i could even rrmember whar car it was too... So, needless to say it was like, instant tears...

My favorite role of her's was the Gunsmoke episode The Jailer, where she kidnaps and imprisons Miss Kitty to wait for Matt Dillon to hang "on the morning of the second day", starring Bruce Dern and Tom Skerrit.

But later she became kinda more infamous after the movie “Mommy Dearest” came out, its biographical about her abusing her 2 adoptive kids, specifically her daughter Christina.

She was known for playing "bad" girls....watch Jezebel, The Letter, Dark Victory, The Little Foxes, Whatever Happened To Baby Jane. Also, in one of my favorite movies, Now, Voyager, she played a suppressed, old-maid, that turns into a beauty with the help of a psychiatrist....and beautiful clothes. One of her last movies was The Whales of August, with a very famous "silent film actress", Lillian Gish. Kim Carnes also did a duet with Barbra Streisand "(Make No Mistake) He's Mine.

Kim Carnes was one of the artists who participated in the "USA for Africa" video. Her voice is amazing! Someday the two of you need to watch a Bette Davis movie. She was one of the most celebrated actors of all time. If you ever see her on screen, you will never forget her.
Dark Victory, Now Voyager, and All About Eve are my 3 favorite Bette Davis classics. All About Eve has one of my favorite lines as well; "Fasten your seatbelts, it's going to be a bumpy night". This was also one of Marilyn Monroe's first movie roles.

Well, I put Kim Carnes in along with Bonnie Tyler and Rod Stewart for those who have those lovely raspy voices in music history so far that I know of! By now it has been mentioned that Bette Davis was one of the Biggest Hollywood Stars of the Golden Age of Hollywood movies. I haven't seen her films but I understand she made the look of slapping a person on the face look really good on screen! After reading the earlier comments, I must agree that Bette Davis played some badass characters on screen! Those viewers would know more than me! Great reaction you two.

This song was played to death in the early 80s. Most loved it, some sick of it. Now with some distance and the associated fond memories of summer camping up north, I am so glad you reacted to it. It really is a cool song, synth clapping machine and all.
For many years I thought Rod Stewart was singing, until I saw this beautiful woman performing. Made me like this song even more.

She's know for this sound and having one of the coolest raspy voices of all time. You did hear her before. She sang on WE ARE THE WORLD, right after Cindy Lauper's part. Bette Davis is an amazing actress from the 30s - 90s who was knows for her large mesmerizing eyes. She was in a lot of old movies that were quite famous. You has a lot of great songs, but you would probably love her duet with one of your favorites, Kenny Rogers, "DON'T FALL IN LOVE WITH A STRANGER".

Bette Davis was not only one of the best actresses ever, she was fierce onscreen and in real life. She took on her studio for better parts which was a big deal in those days because studios basically owned stars.
She also helped put together the Hollywood canteen during world War II. Thousands and thousands of service members went there and got served food and drinks by the Hollywood stars of the day. There was music and lots of dancing.

Physical came out in 1981, this is true, but how Billboard starts their charts in December (I believe) so it counts as a 1982 release and was the #1 song of 1982.

Love this song. As a kid I didn't notice, but I realized recently that Kim Carnes was totally gorgeous!
This is one of those songs we recorded off the radio using the cassette deck in Mom and Dads car. We then wore that cassette out. Still a great song.
