The whole soundtrack to Flashdance is amazing. Irene Cara sadly passed away in November of last year. You should have a movie day after this and watch the movie and dance with Jennifer Beals, my friends and I would watch the movie over and over and dance to it .
I strongly agree with all points. Fantastic movie and soundtrack. It was really amazing on the ‘big screen’ back in the day. I still listen to the soundtrack from time to time and always find that it makes me smile.
agree with Irene Cara - her voice is tremendously capable and fluid.... of course, Jennifer Beals has become such a great actress from Devil in a Blue Dress through the L-word (and yes I even saw her uncredited role in My Bodyguard -- LOL)
In the early '80s, you could not avoid this song. It was on the radio non-stop coinciding with the release of Flashdance. So sad when such a young person passes.
Flash Dance is the film, its from the 80s, a very iconic film and this was a massive hit song, the song won as Oscar, Golden Globe (Best original song) and a Grammy.
Yes . . . to the water drenching the dancer . . . in the movie Flash Dance. Also, check out her performance of the title tune from the movie "Fame," . . . and also "Out Here On My Own" with her playing piano and singing. So powerful.
So incredibly talented and had a voice that gave me the good kind of chills. Underrated and overlooked as one of the best female voices of all time. I remember having the biggest crush in her and even dated a girl because she looked so much like her. She is beauty personified. She was taken from us way too early and will be missed immensely. Thank you Brit for your always amazing critiques! 😊
Though she was known for this song and the theme song to the movie "Fame", her most moving song, in my opinion, is "OUT HERE ON MY OWN". I hope you'll react to it in the future. RIP Irene Cara.
Wasn't it Flashdance? I remember her dancing in front of the mirror having a Rocky moment. Fame was the name of the song she did for the movie of selfsame name.
@@falconlore9666 "What A Feeling" is from Flashdance, and though Irene sang "What A Feeling", Jennifer Beals was the actress in the movie. As for "Fame", Irene sang the theme AND starred in it. There is a scene where she and the pianist are rehearsing in an empty auditorium. This is where she sings the heartfelt "Out Here On My Own. It's worth reacting to.
I always make this same mistake. I remember Irene Cara was in the cast of Fame and forget this song was from Flashdance. Oh, wait. On second read, you didn’t make a mistake. The wording is a bit awkward and confused me because you didn’t mention Flashdance. ✌️
Irene started life as just another Broadway kid until she was in her teens where she was on the kids TV show "Electric Company" as part of the kid's circus. Then she was in the movie "Aaron Loves Angela" and "Sparkle". By the time she was 19 came her biggest movie role in "Fame" where she played Coco and sang the theme song. This song her next biggest hit also from a movie "Flashdance". Unfortunately, in the late 80's she would run into trouble with record label and start using drugs. Even thought she would win a lawsuit with the record label and get clean from drugs her singing and acting career where never the same. Last year at the age of 63 she died.
I absolutely love this song, as soon as I heard the first few notes, I remember this song and had forgotten it, I put it on my music list right away, oh thank you so much whoever suggested this thank you 🙏🙏🙏

Unfortunately, Irene Cara (* March 18, 1959 in New York City, New York. She passed away on † November 25, 2022 in Largo, Florida): she was a US singer and actress. Super known for the film "Flashdance".
Irene Cara is incredibly adorable. Gorgeous and with a beautifully controlled vibrato. She's been singing and dancing since she was a little girl, explaining why she also looks wonderful when she dances. The movie, filmed in Pittsburgh, PA, was "Flashdance." Starring Jennifer Beals, it was about a working-class girl who wanted to try to break into the world of ballet. If you're curious, another great song by Cara is "Fame," which was about a high-school geared toward the performing arts. She shines on that too. What a BEAUTIFUL woman she was!
Grammy and Oscar winning title song from the popular film "Flashdance" (1983). Official title of the song is "Flashdance ... What a Feeling." R.I.P ~ Irene Cara (1959-2022), a fine actress (though she didn't appear in this film) and recording artist who should've been a bigger star. She seemed to flame out after making a big splash in her early twenties.
She sued her record company Network Records on Feb. 25, 1985. They blacklisted her and she found it extremely difficult to ever have the same opportunities in the entertainment industry ever again. Her lawyers were also subverted by her record company and simply did nothing for 6 years. She had to fire them and start all over with a new lawyer in 1991. Court Order also forbid her from performing all of her songs in the U.S. (until 1993) when she finally won her lawsuit for $1.5 Million. Network Records declared bankruptcy of course and she got $0.00. I just finished a book on her life called Cinderella Superstar: Remembering Irene. Let me know if you want to get one when it comes out.
She also did the theme song to the tv show Fame too I think. I love this song. I went to an arts high school for theatre. Got to watch friends in amazing dance performances. As far as I’m concerned, this song is right on.
That water splash scene is being parodied/tributes even today. There is a commercial for dryer sheets with Craig Robinson where, shot just like in the film, a guy collapses into a chair at the laundromat, and he is doused... by a load of fresh-smelling socks from Robinson from above. I know I am not alone in saying how enjoyable someone with your background in performance arts is as you start vibing with your own interpretations to this classic. You might like the late 90s film Dance With Me starting Vanessa Williams.
I agree. It’s a great “articulation of dance”! Flashdance was a huge hit and this song and the music video are iconic of the musical dramas at that time. ✌️
She was a singer, actress, and a dancer. She stared in the movie Fame(react to her songs from the movie titled Fame, and Out Here On My Own). She played the led role in the original movie Sparkle. And as others have said, this song is from the movie Flashdance. Fame is a movie about a school of the arts.
This is from the CLASSIC movie "Flashdance". You are absolutely correct when you remembered the water falling on the dancer on stage. The movie made Jennifer Beals into a household name!
It's actually in the original song title, which is "Flashdance... What a feeling". It was one of those movies that made people take up dance lessons in droves. You are correct, "Maniac" was also on this soundtrack,.
The movie is Flashdance, yes, with the splashing water on the chair. The main character worked as a welder and an exotic dancer to pay for dance lessons to be a professional dancer. Irene Cara was actually a star in Fame, and she's amazing. Fame is an incredibly powerful movie, and Irene's character journey was especially poignant. And then it was an incredible TV series. They are about a high school of the arts, and all the different characters.
