Just remember - No autotune, no luxurious cars, no twerking girls, no rich designer clothes, no vulgar lyrics, and definitely no branding of any sorts. Just pure music, two musicians, two wonderful voices and a giant snowman! - ABBA will make u cry and jump in joy, it will peirce right through the heart and heal u inside.

Chiquitita means 'little one' in Spanish. This was a massive hit all over Europe and all proceeds were donated as partof a show by a nuber of artists the UNICEF the United nations childrens charity. Abba recorded this in Spanish and it went back to number one again in Spain and throughout South America. They also did an album with 10 of their songs many prior hits in Spanish. Bjorn speaks about 5 languages. For a great example of Anni-frids vocals and great harmony 'Fernando' is amazing. Another Spanish themed song though the story is set in Mexico.

I remember this! It was also used by my Spanish teacher to illustrate the "little female friend" aspect of the title & how Spanish speakers may make a fond nickname out of one's name by adding ita or ito. My husband's name becomes Guermolito. A lesson that has stayed with me for over 35 years. Gracias, Senora Fell!

@@rebeccalipps8007 In Spanish "chiquitita" is the diminutive of "chiquita" and "chiquita" is "little girl". in Spanish "chiquitita" would be the equivalent to "tiny girl", and from what I read about the group ABBA, in those years they sang in Spanish without knowing the meaning of the words in that language, they only learned to read and pronounce the words and not to understand the language.

ABBA is a Swedish band that were HUGE in the 70's and very early 80's. Primarily known for their disco grooves they had so many great tunes and new bands that came after, like Ace of Base that were from Sweden all were compared to them. Check out Dancing Queen, Mamma Mia, Knowing Me Knowing You, S.O.S and more.

If you know anything about singing, and I don't , you can hear that in every syllable, how they enter each phrase (the "attack" in instrumental speak), softly or hard, how they choose how strong one or the other sings, everything, it's not by accident. I call it micro-phrasing and it's the sign of master singers.

Benny, the guy playing piano composes the music. Bjorn, the guy with the guitar, writes the lyrics. Agnetha, the one with blond hair, is a soprano and Frida, with the red hair is a mezzo soprano. Each singer has a lovely voice in her own right, and each have opportunities to sing lead ("Knowing Me, Knowing You" is a great one for showcasing Frida's lead vocals) but their voices coming together is what makes this group special. As you noted, their voices blend together so well - fans refer to this as the group's "third voice". They just recorded their first album after nearly 40 years and in an interview about making it, Bjorn said they weren't sure how they were going to sound after all these years, but as soon as Frida and Agnetha's voices came together it was "the sound of ABBA". P.S. The snowman is there because these were the very early days of music videos and initial attempts to make them look interesting resulted in things like Swedish (Nordic) people sitting in front of giant snowmen. :)

"Chiquitita" means 'little girl' (with affection) in spanish And the melody have a spanish tune, specialy by the acustic guitar But the center is the wonderful piano, like akmost all ABBA songs
"Chiquitita" is a beautiful song, it has hopeful lyrics, a melody that starts very soft with the blonde Agnetha's solo, then grows and explodes in a powerful chorus; Agnetha and Anni Frida's vocal harmonies are of excellence (Agnetha is soprano, Anni Frid is mezzo soprano, and together blending together the 'Third Voice' of ABBA)
"Chiquitita" was composed especially for the Concert by UNICEF, invited (with a lot of artist) by Bee Gees
ABBA premiered "Chiquitita" that night in January 9 (1979), and its royalties are eternal for UNICEF
"Chiquitita" was ABBA's greatest success in Latin America, that prompted ABBA to record it in Spanish, and its success was so extraordinary that in the following years ABBA recorded an album with its best songs entirely in Spanish
"Chiquitita" was specialy the greatest hit of ABBA in my country Argentina
"Chiquitita" is in the Top 3 of all ABBA worldwide biggest hits, with 'Dancing Queen" and "Fernando", and it's a fantastic Masterpiece
This promotional video was in February 1979 in Swizterland, when ABBA go there to a special TV "ABBA in Switzerland", for the 'International year of the Child'
    (That's why the snowman)
It's their only promotional video that ABBA made without Sweden
I wish to see you soon in another reactions to ABBA songs

Chiquitita means pretty little one (female, since it has the "a" ending). The diminuitive "little" is probably just a way of expressing affection/endearment. Like a lot of ABBA songs, this was released in both English and Spanish. I believe that those songs were composed in Spanish first and then translated, which is why sometimes in the English versions there are leftover notes and not enough words to fill them.
    Anyway, either version is beautiful.

I don't think any Abba songs were written in Spanish before they had already been written in English. Even this one, Chiquitita, was only recorded in Spanish months after it was already a hit in English. In fact between their hit Waterloo in 1974 to Chiquitita in 1979, Abba didn't write or record any songs in Spanish. The success of the Spanish version of Chiquitita in Spanish speaking countries caused the band to re-record some of their hits into Spanish, but these were all old established hits.

Frida (brunette) has a very special story:
Anni-Frid Lyngstad was born on November 15th 1945 in Bjørkåsen (Norway). She was the result of a liaison between 19-year-old Synni Lyngstad and a German officer, Alfred Haase, just before the end of the Second World War. Alfred Haase returned to Germany without knowing about Synni’s pregnancy.
Frida, aged 2, and her mother soon left Norway and moved to Sweden where Synni died in 1949. Frida was raised by her grandmother alone. Already as a child, she showed huge interest in music and used every possibility to start a career in the music business.

The magic of ABBA never fails to amaze me, song after song after song

ABBA the second biggest selling band in music history, only really the US that mostly missed out on their huge catalogue of hits worldwide. For example, their collection album ABBA Gold has been in the UK top 100 for one THOUSAND and thirty four weeks and counting - was still number 13 at the end of 2021. Twenty worldwide number 1's including Gimme Gimme Gimme, Mamma Mia, SOS, Dancing Queen, Fernando, Knowing Me Knowing You, Money Money Money, The Name of the Game, Super Trouper, Take a Chance on Me, I Do I Do I Do I Do I Do, One of Us, Ring Ring, Summer Night City, I have a Dream, Head Over Heels, Don't Shut Me Down. But really, dozens of other superb tracks including Voulez Vous, I Am The City, Eagle, The Day Before You Came, Lay All Your Love On Me, So Long, Does Your Mother Know, The Visitors, As Good As New... you get the idea! If you want to see what the band looked like in their heyday try the vid 'If it wasn't for the nights original broadcast 1978' in Japan. BTW the Spanish version of Chiquitita is stunning.

They are the FOURTH biggest selling ACT in history. The number one is The Beatles. Second is Michael Jackson. Third is Elvis Presley. You are right that this is the second biggest selling group. Amazing, they were never even NOMINATED for a Grammy until this year. They were nominated for “Record of the Year” for their new song, “I Still Have Faith in You”. I’m thrilled they were finally nominated, but what on earth took them so long???

ABBA have given the royalties of this beautiful song, in perpetuity, to UNICEF to aiding children. They have recently added "Little Things" from their latest WONDERFUL album "Voyage" to assisting children, God bless them.

Loved the reactions to these ABBA songs. These songs are utter magic, it's crazy how many little details come through in all the vocal parts and instrumental flourishes.

This is my favourite of theirs simply because it shows the power of the girls' voices. Also YES, they sounded just as good live. The girls were successful singers in their own right before joining Bjorn and Benny.

amazing that it was only one of the lads that could speak English. Their greatest hits came out, Mum played it on the record player, not long before she died at the hands of a drunk driver. She was 29, I listen to this group and cant help feeling a tear or two well up. Cheers for covering abba guys 🙂
