    ITE Super IO Chips from the factory are pre-programmed with default firmware that reads data from its SPI Lines. Most laptops are equipped with 2 Flash ICs, one for the PCH (M_BIOS) and one for the SuperIO (EC_BIOS). The EC_BIOS contains procedures & information on which GPIO pins are for Power Button, LED Notification, PowerOn, SusOn, PGood, PCH S0, etc. Some laptops don't have ECBIOS, so they use custom firmware manually programmed to the SuperIO's flash before usage. This is the reason why you didn't need to program the SuperIO. Be careful though, some laptops have Thunderbolt ICs that also use Flash ICs for Thunderbolt Firmware. Most modern Lenovo Thinkpads nowadays have 3 Flash ICs.

    Sorin, the super io was drawing current and getting hot. Doesn't mean it's dead. Could have been the dodgy dual MOSFET dragging the rail down. I would have taken that off first and checked v+ again

    Because that is unleaded solder, it will take more heat and more time to resolder. Also the flux has lost properties after so much heat. That is why it is common to apply at least some leaded solder to mix and apply fresh flux. Makes the job easier.

    That chip can be setup to use external memory or external instructions program from the bios chip. The engineer probably trying to use off the shelf part to create a simple and cheap diagnostic system. Maybe they are realise that the super io chip is not the best way to store a basic program. Because if the super io chip is damage they have noway to tell what might cause the problem systematically. So they use external chip to communicate with the super io chip. If the super io chip fail to return the communication, the diagnostic tool that they have can flag it as super io chip problem. It kinda smart way to debug a product. Instead building an expensive test jig, the can just intergrade a small diagnostic circuit into a product.

    • @lazal3m
      @lazal3m Рік тому +3

      SuperIO chip is directly connected to the Keyboard and Trackpad in all laptops. To program the SuperIO, the programmer would just need to remove the keyboard and plug the programmer to the Keyboard Connector. After this, you just need to run the programmer and check if it detects the SuperIO, if yes, then you can load the firmware. No soldering required.

    hi sorin, i think there is no need for you to program a brand new ITE SIO chip Just attach your blank SIO chip and the laptop should automatically flash a valid ec firmware from main bios. correct me if im wrong

    • @ronaldkahwa3610
      @ronaldkahwa3610 Рік тому +1

      For me what I do , I fast download the bios file. And if I find that there are two files but on the board I have one bios chip ( the main) then it means that the ec is within the Sio chip hence you need to program the Sio chip. But if it is only one bios file, and one bios chip on the board, then it means that the sio chip will program itself from the board.

      As long as the laptop is connected to the AC Adapter or there is a battery, there would always be 5v and 3.3v present. This means even if the laptop OS is turned off, the SuperIO is always running. Over time, due to heat and continuous power it will die out (ymmv). The only way to prevent this is to completely power off the motherboard by removing all power source. The 3v CMOS battery have no effect on this so you can leave it as is.

    I'm surprised at how lax you seem to have become now you're working at home - I had expected that you'd have taken more care to be seen to carry out repairs more carefully and more professionally now that you're building up your own business. Not removing the damaged chip from the board and testing again to see if the io chip stopped heating up and also supplied the 3.3V to the start switch I found to be incomprehensible. Potentially it was a one visit fix, without having to wait for the new io chip to arrive - let alone being a cheaper fix for the customer. You neither removed nor even diluted the lead free solder on the board before replacing the chips, then didn't touch up the joints with an iron after using the hot air on them. I'm certainly nowhere near your level on expertise, but I'd definitely not be sending anything of mine for you to repair. Something seems to have changed...

      Well just for fun I had tested colophony flux, which I also had made some time back. To be fair and exact on the topic I have been daily soldering for past 22 years since being child. So first - colophony flux burns out above 350C and it's even harder to remove it than any amtech or any similiar flux that hasn't been heated up prior removal. Second, magic Sorin flux is not very good for non leaded soldering referencing to my prior sentence earlier. I did mention on Asus laptop DC socket repair that soldering job is just poor and people here on YT were not very kind to put it up to perspective. Soldering is kind of an art combined with experience and it takes many burnt boards and no fixes to understand. Looks good on video though, but reality is diffrent. Objectively speaking I would send out job like this when I was still a child. Today I make joints better than factory and I don't need fancy stations and tips for that but I see tendency that big youtubers seem to push in the content fact that they have fancy equipment that somehow does the job but it's great because using own experience and brain is more hassle than using fancy tools. By this comment I mean no offense to anybody but as it goes we could argue with no limit. They have their experience, I have mine. I stopped making such comments but being sincere I see what you see and what i saw earlier and I can 100% agree that Sorin's job somehow got worse than it was before. Happy trails.
