@@troystaunton254 Kurt was actually trying to get booed as a heel character and the chant just stuck even when he was a good guy later on because of how well it went with his music.
With Cena it was more like a Roman thing where many people genuinely didn't like him as a face and were sick of him dominating the main event scene.

It's not iconic, he freaking sucked. He just stayed around enough for people to respect his tenure. His reign of terror as boring Cena champ is here was atrocious. @yooitsbj This comment is what rules. Ppl were booing Cena in 2005 and 06 for his moveset. The same ppl were simping for Hogan even though he was a washed up 80s star. Cena is a well rounded performer who gives it his all. Hogan is a flexing oaf who only cares about his share of the green stuff.
I'm calling bullshit. He very much did have a say in his booking and sometimes refused to job to certain people. He himself admitted that he didn't want to lose to the Nexus and thus he singlehandedly stopped an entire faction and destroyed their credibility. That was all him, not WWE Creative
We can appreciate this guy now but WWE was unwatchable when "cena wins lol" was the norm.

I love how John Cena embraced the crowd reaction, it was wholesome to witness his reactions to the crowd.
Even though people booed John Cena for about 11 years of his 14 year full time run from 2002 to 2016, everyone deep down respected John Cena.
The only time Cena got cheered by most of the audience during his full time run was from December 2002 to June 2005, so only 2 and half years of his 14 year full time run.
Once Cena got to Raw in June 2005 he went straight to feud with 4 big IWC fan favourites in Christian, Jericho, Kurt Angle, and Edge, and that was the beginning of people booing John Cena, Cena kept getting his ass kicked by Kurt Angle but was still winning and fans started to turn on Cena.
He then started to feud with Edge and because Edge was such an entertaining heel and that Edge cashed in and won the title, the heat on Cena started to die down a little. Until Cena won it back at the Royal Rumble in 2006, the heat started up again on Cena, so much so that Cena’s next feud with Triple H some fans started to cheer for Triple H, and Triple H was the IWC public enemy number 1 from September 2002 to June 2005. But because the IWC had a new enemy fans started to cheer for Triple H.
But the first time a crowd overwhelming was booing Cena was on the Raw after Mania 22 in Chicago, that night was the moment it became cool to hate on Cena. Then his next feud was with RVD, another IWC favourite, and that crowd at ECW One Night Stand 2006 was the moment that Cena was not going to shake off those boos for a really long time, as it didn’t and took a whole decade and for him to become a part timer for him to shake of those boos.
As for me I started to turn on John Cena in November 2008, because as a fan John Cena still had some edge to him during what I like to call his Chain Gang Soldier Era from June 2005 to August 2008, as he wasn’t Dr Of Thuganomics anymore but he wasn’t yet full on Super Cena. So from June 2005 to August 2008, Cena was what I like to call the Chain Gang Soldier.
But WWE went PG in July 2008, and at SummerSlam 2008 Cena got injured again facing Batista, then he was out for almost 3 months and came back at Survivor Series 2008 to face Jericho. But at Survivor Series 2008 Cena came out looking quite different, and I thought to myself who is this guy?, this is not Cena.
So when he returned at Survivor Series 2008, Cena’s taunt had changed to the Okay sign instead of the thumb and pinky horns he was doing, Cena’s shirt had changed and was no longer wearing Sport influenced jerseys, and because of now WWE being PG they had to change the names of Cena’s finishing moves from the FU and STFU to the Attitude Adjustment and STF.
So Cena had a character makeover that as a fan I didn’t like at the time, Cena’s promos were also becoming less entertaining because of PG constraints. So I started to not like Cena anymore as a result of that. Any edge Cena had left was fully gone by November 2008 and SuperCena was in full swing from that moment.
But as I said even though people booed Cena, deep down everyone respected Cena, because of Cena’s professionalism, his charity work, his insane work ethic out of the ring, and the fact Cena comes across like a very humble and nice guy. So those/us people that booed Cena still deep down respected Cena.

I didn't respect him. I went to a show and he put on a crap main event. Waste of my money. Booed him ever since. Guy was a poor wrestler and a boring character. He got booed for it until he ran off the crowd that criticized him.

I’m glad to see Cena be given his flowers. It was tough seeing him take negative reactions at times, but he took it like a champ, and now the folks who boo’d him have kids of their own and preach “Never Give Up” to their kids.
As an older wrestling fan I've seen John Cena go from young prodigy to main eventer to then becoming one of the most divise figureheads in wrestling history. I remember the bullet-proof '5 moves of doom' Cena very well. Funny thing is, he's treated as a beloved industry icon now and his sparse appearance are thoroughly enjoyable.
